CELEBRATE DIWALI SAFELY Between April 2009 and March 2010 Avon Fire & Rescue Service attended 26 fires involving candles and tealights. That’s one every fortnight. Hundreds of people use candles during the winter months, but if used incorrectly candles can lead to fire breaking out. In one incident attended by Avon Fire & Rescue Service last year, a family had been using candles as part of their Diwali celebrations but left them unattended. The celebrations turned to panic as fire took hold in an upstairs room, quickly filling the house with toxic black smoke. Firefighters were on the scene within minutes and able to tackle the fire. But sadly the room was left badly damaged and the rest of the house suffered heavy smoke damage. House fires can be devastating, destroying belongings and endangering lives. Inhaling just two or three breaths of toxic smoke can be fatal. If the family had had a smoke alarm fitted in their home at the time of the fire it could have alerted them sooner. Working smoke alarms provide an early warning that a fire has broken out and can provide extra minutes for occupants to escape the property. Make sure you have a working smoke alarm and check the battery once a week to ensure it is working. Avon Fire & Rescue Service wants you to enjoy your Diwali celebrations safely. Here are our top safety tips:
Never place lit candles close to furnishings or curtains Always place tealights in a suitable holder as they can get very hot and burn through plastic Never leave a candle burning unattended Keep sleeves and loose clothing well away from naked flames For more fire safety advice visit www.avonfire.gov.uk

Deepavali ‘Diwali’ Festival of Light
The exact day of the festival is decided by the position of the moon. According to the Hindu calendar, Amavasya or 'no moon day' is considered as the perfect day to celebrate Diwali. This dark night comes after every fortnight and in the month of Kartik, it marks this festival of lights and divas. As per the English calendar, the festival generally comes in the month of November and December. This year the festival is celebrated on the 26th of October for five days. For all Hindu people, the festival holds an imperative meaning since the festival is reckoned with Lord Rama's victory as the King of Ajodhya after his return to the kingdom from 14 years of exile along with his wife Sita & brother Laxman after killing the demon, King Ravana. The festival is celebrated by lighting divas and candles to drive away the darkness of Amavasya. The word, ‘Deepavali’ means rows of lamps. This explains why Diyas are an integral part of the festival. The traditional Diwali Diyas or lamps have witnessed a makeover in past few years. Erstwhile they were the sole creation of the potter’s wheel but today they are being handled by creative designers and craftsman who paint and turn divas in innovative shapes and pattern. Wax filled divas are the very much in demand as they are more convenient to use than the conventional oil ones. Traditions & Customs The first day of five day long Diwali celebrations is of great importance to the rich community of western India. Houses and business premises are renovated and decorated. Entrances are made colorful with lovely traditional motifs of Rangoli designs to welcome Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. To indicate her long-awaited arrival, small footprints are drawn with rice flour and vermilion powder all over the houses. Lamps are kept burning all through the night. Lakshmi-Pooja is performed in the evenings when tiny divas of clay are lighted to drive away the shadows of evil spirits, devotional songs- in praise of Goddess Laxmi are sung and Naivedya of traditional sweets is offered to the Goddess. There is a peculiar custom in Maharashtra to lightly pound dry coriander seeds with jaggery and offer as Naivedya. In villages cattle are adorned and worshiped by farmers as they form the main source of their income. In south cows are offered special veneration as they are supposed to be the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and therefore they are adorned and worshiped on this day.
RANGOLI DESIGNS AT RADIO MAST DIWALI ROAD SHOW IN BRISTOL
Rangoli Decoration Themes
Rangoli designs are generally based on themes that have been in use through ages. The common Rangoli themes are the celestial symbols such as the rising sun, moon, stars, zodiac signs, and holy symbols like Om, mangal kalash, swastika, chakra, a lighted Deepak and trident, "shree. Goddess Lakshmi in the lotus symbolizes the figure of renewed life. Other popular themes are natural images like flowers, creepers, trees, fish, birds, elephants, dancing figures, human figures and geometrical figures such as circles, semi-circles, triangles, squares and rectangles. Drawing Diwali Rangoli at the entrance door of individual homes is the common sight during Diwali decoration. For this, the footsteps of Goddess Lakshmi entering into the home are designed at the main entrance of the home or near the place of worship, which indicates the entrance of prosperity in the home. This is the special Diwali Rangoli for the entrance. It is considered auspicious as it signifies showering of good luck and prosperity on the house and in the family. In India and countries with Indian diaspora celebrations are held every evening with local shops & markets stocking up sweets, fireworks & colorful garments all displayed by the Road side. This is the theme of Little India Road Show that is held annually at various locations in the West Country. Diwali celebration is a very happy occasion for all.

Hindu Celebration of Navratri
'Nav' means 'nine' and 'ratri' means 'night'. Thus, 'Navratri' means 'nine nights'. There are many legends attached to the conception of Navratri like all Indian festivals. All of them are related to Goddess Shakti (Hindu Mother Goddess) and her various forms. It is one of the most celebrated festivals of Hindu calendar, it holds special significance for Gujratis and Bengalis and one can see it in the zeal and fervor of the people with which they indulge in the festive activities of the season. Dandiya and Garba Rass are the highlights of the festival in Gujarat, while farmer sow seeds and thank the Goddess for her blessings and pray for better yield. In older times, Navratri was associated with the fertility of Mother Earth who feed us as her children. The first three days of Navratri are dedicated to Goddess Durga (Warrior Goddess) dressed in red and mounted on a lion. Her various incarnations - Kumari, Parvati and Kali - are worshipped during these days. They represent the three different classes of womanhood that include the child, the young girl and the mature woman. Next three days are dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity), dressed in gold and mounted on an owl and finally, last three are dedicated to Goddess Saraswati (Goddess of Knowledge), dressed in milky white and mounted on a pure white swan. Sweetmeats are prepared for the celebrations. Children and adults dress up in new bright-colored dresses for the night performances.
Hindu religious songs (Bhajans) were performed through the evening. In some communities, people undergo rigorous fasts during this season that lasts for the nine days of Navratri. The festival culminates on Mahanavami. On this day, Kanya Puja is performed. Nine young girls representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshiped. Their feet are washed as a mark of respect for the Goddess and then they are offered new clothes as gifts by the worshiper. This ritual is performed in most parts of the country. With commercialization, the festival has moved on to be a social festival rather than merely a religious one. However, nothing dampens the spirit of the devout followers of Goddess Durga, as they sing devotional songs and indulge in the celebrations of Navratri, year by year. In the South West Navratri is celebrated at community centre and temples. From Swindon across Bristol to Cardiff in South Wales the celebration is full of color & pomp. Bristol celebrations are organised by the Bristol Hindu Temple at Patchway School, and Bristol Hindu Students Union at Students Union, Clifton. Prasad (blessed food) is served at all functions.

GLASTONBURY 2011
FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY PERFORMING ARTS
From humble hippyfest to music megabrand Glastonbury has exploded into one of the world's biggest and best-loved festivals. When Michael Eavis, a Somerset farmer, organised the first festival in 41 years ago, he was inspired by the psychedelic delights of the Bath Blues Festival. In an attempt to create an even better event, Eavis combined typical pop festival culture with a more traditional fair and harvest-type event. At the first Glastonbury in September 1970, around 1,500 people paid just £1 to see Marc Bolan and TRex headline the event, accompanied by free milk; just one detail that marks Glastonbury's individuality from its start.
2011 Glastonbury festival has kicked off with headliners U2, Coldplay and Beyoncé played over the weekend. Close to 170,000 music lovers attended this year.
GLASTONBURY FOUNDER MICHEAL EAVIS ON THE LEFT The festival organizer Michael Eavis, a farmer in a Somerset valley stated that he decided to host the first festival, then called Pilton Festival, after seeing an open air Led Zeppelin concert at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music 1970. The first festivals in the 1970s were influenced by hippie ethics and the free festival movement. The festival retains vestiges of this tradition such as the Green Fields area which includes the Green Futures and Healing Field. After the 1970s the festival took place almost every year and grew in size, with the number of attendees sometimes being swollen by gate-crashers. Leading pop and rock artists have appeared as headline acts with thousands of others appearing on smaller stages and performance areas. The festival has also spawned films and albums and is reported on extensively on television and in newspapers.

PROFILE
RASIK PATEL
Born Rasik Jeeraj Patel often referred to as Steve by friends and customers at his wholesale outlet, RJW in Easton Bristol; Rasik was born in a small town in Eastern Uganda called Kasawo, 38miles from the main city Kampala. Youngest amongst the brothers in a family of 10, five sisters and five brothers. He had his early education in a typical African community school and proceeded to Jinja, Uganda’s second capital for secondary education.at Kololo High school where he completed his GCE in 1968. After school he joined the family business for a couple of months moving on to work as a charity worker with the Norwegian Embassy in 1969 and later working in the same capacity with the American embassy. This was purely on voluntary bases to gain experience and work with different communities. He set up his own business in 1970, this was a retail outlet dealing in textiles, hardware and household goods supplying to 40 local schools in the Mengo region of Uganda. He recalls life in Uganda then was peaceful and the country was fast growing, vey fertile and welcoming to all Uganda citizens to start-up businesses. This was a laid down government law that only citizens could set up businesses. Trading under the name RJ initials he still uses in his current business in the UK. Things took a turn in 1972 when his father suddenly passed on Rasik handed over his business to his brothers and rejoined the family business to assist his mother run it. Though the youngest amongst the boys Rasik was always considered as the most enterpring and hardworking by his late father. The family business was an appointed government supplier.
ASSISTING AT THE 2011 HOLI FESTIVAL
1972 was a turning point for Uganda as this was the year that General Idi Amin took power in a bloody military coup ousting President Milton Obote. In the beginning Amin was welcomed by all in Uganda, then a better change then Obote but soon changed his ways. Many Ugandans felt that it was his close association with Col Gaddafi & the then Somali government that provided him with aid and security protection against the many assassination attempts to his life as he grew into a dictator eliminating the opposition and suppressing the press. In August of 1972 at a foundation stone laying ceremony of Bila Sugar Company in Teso District General Amin announced made a public announcement that was broadcast on Uganda Radio too that he was giving Asians holding British passports to leave the country. This did not affect the Patel family as they were Uganda citizens by birth. Just a few weeks later the General now self-proclaimed Field Marshall Idi Amin Dada, ordered Uganda citizens of Asian origin to also leave Uganda. Rask’s Uganda passport was confiscated by the Ugandan authorities and his whole family like thousands of other Ugandan 7 British Asians in Uganda had to leave all their property, businesses, bank accounts and board a flight to start a life as a refugee in UK. Rasik landed at Stansted Airport on 5th November 1972 much later than his family who had come in earlier. He joined the rest at an American refugee Camp in Hen green near Newbury. At the camp he put my voluntary skills that he had gathered with the American and Norwegian embassies in Uganda and soon was in charge of close to 1200 refugees organising meals and seeing to their wellbeing. The camp was shut down in July 1973, I moved to Bristol, settling in Wintebourne with his mother, brother and sisters. Looking for work was not easy but as he had a family to support he joined Creda in Yate as a night Shift Press Operator only to be declared redundant after two and half years. This was in 1976, now married to Sharda his wife the need to immediately get employment was pressing, he secured a job as a petrol station attendant eventually joining Fry’s Chocolate at Keynsham

It is sensational reporting like the one to your right that has inspired both the residents & business community in this vibrant part of Bristol to come together and eradicate the ills that have beleaguered the area in the past decade. As someone who spends a lot of time in this stretch just off the M32, labelling Stapleton Road the most dangerous in Britain or whatever is ludicrous. Yes they have been cases of burglars, stabbings, killings and prostitutes in the area but as more communities are moving in and the new wave of businesses are staying open much later such incidents have been drastically reduced. New enterprises have sprung up, with Subway & Alnoor Supermarket lighting the top entry of Stapleton Road and the soon to be opened “Piccadilly” Restaurant & Functions serving as an entry point on the other side of the road. Comparing to 2005 when kerb crawling was abundant it is rare to find these girls on this street, mind you not that there are not there totally, if there are any it’s hardly noticeable and the entire community is optimistic soon they will be a thing of the past thanks to the joint effort of all parties involved including the police. It is this effort that inspired Clare Mobley of 1st Choice Florist organise the Open Street Day with the backing of the Traders Association, Easton Working Group cooperation from Bristol City Council by allowing traders to exhibit merchandise on parking spaces and BBC Radio Bristol who were stationed on the road reporting “Live” through the week.
