HONOURING THE BEST IN THE SOUTH WEST! MTM South West Asian& Ethnic Minorities Awards 2014. Celebrating the Excellence of the Asian & Ethnic Minorities in the South West!

Mast The Magazine was launched as a supplement of Radio Mast FM in 2009 to further bridge the South Asian Communities in the South West of England.

Man of the Year

After an overwhelming response from the local community and service organisation in Radio Mast FM, a local community radio in Bristol, the team felt best to have a monthly Asian based magazine thus providing read for the Asians in the region who longed to have one of their own reads in the market. Initially Mast The Magazine featured entertainment, culture, events & issues affecting Asians in the South West but soon found its way into Cardiff & Newport in South Wales. Mast The Magazine became the preferred social & entertainment Asian publication in the South West & South Wales. By the release of our third edition we were on the Press invites at most Asian Music & culture events in the South West, South Wales, West Midlands and creeping into national events in London. Re-branding in 2012, the magazine launched the 1st ever MTM South West Asian Awards, Honouring the Best in the South West in business, art, entertainment, auto trade, catering, public service, community service, and life time achievement.

Irvin Campbell

This was the first event of its nature organised by the local community for the local community in the 60 years the Asians have been in the South West. Over ten thousand voted for the 200 nominees in the 23 categories with 69 making it to the grand finals that featured a glittering award ceremony, entertainment and exquisite dining.

I live in Bristol married and has four children and four grandchildren and I am a self employed builder. I teach a range of sport and I am also an Olympic Wrestling Official and a football referee. As well as being a Committee member, I am also the treasurer of SARI. I enjoy working with young people and I have been a mentor to challenging young people. I live in Whitchurch with my family.

There are 34 Awards up for grabs in 2014 with the introduction of a Special Open Award category to include all Ethnic Minorities therefore celebrating the Excellence of Asian & Ethnic Minorities in the South West.

“I give a lot of my time to others, family and non family. Over the years I have taken bored young people off the streets and started football teams having taken my coaching and management badge, some went on to play at high level, three at Bristol City. I was the first Olympic Wrestling Coach in the country to take Wrestling into the schools and it is now a nationwide programme”

The 2014 awards were launched on the 10th of August and the nominations closed on the 31st of October, when a 30 day window was opened for voting, closing on the 30th November. The response has been phenomenal. As we celebrate the finale on the 21st of December at the Bristol Marriott City Centre in what is termed as a Glittering Gala Evening featuring some fine entertainment and exquisite dining.

I made Downend School a centre of excellence for Olympic Wrestling and had the biggest female squad of women wrestlers outside of London. “All this being done on a voluntary basis and still continue. All this has given me enjoyment and fulfilment over the years I have been involved with all these organisations”..Irvin Campbell.

MTM 2014 thanks members of the local & regional press for their support, the local businesses in the region, community workers, entertainers, photographers, The Bristol Marriott, Friends Caterers Coventry, Special Effects experts Smile Group of businesses, thedjbristol for Sound & Lighting, Dale for security, Ben Skuse of Sprint, Mike Wyatt of YZ DESIGNS, Allan Parris & his panel, Raffi Sheikh voting master, entertainers SonAash Dancers, Swindon Stars, Moses Fire & Limbo Group, singer Rahi Bains and all that have assisted to put the show together. …and here is a glimpse of some of the finalist for the 2014 Awards. Junior (Event Co-ordinator) Junior has been an inspiration to many in the Ethnic Asian community. He was instrumental in training members of the local community for the launch of the 1st Islamic Radio in the South West & South Wales; and Mast Mast FM which was later christened Radio Mast.

Abdul Raoof Malik

Was born in Easton, Bristol in 1973, he is one of 7 children and he attended Whitehall Primary School going on to complete his secondary education at Whitefield Fishponds Secondary School. After marriage in Pakistan Abdul had the urge to start his own business and to be able to include his family within this business, looking at his locality in Easton where Abdul lived on Colston road he realized the need for a traditional butchers that is able to cater for the Muslim

community as well as the other diverse communities within this unique locality. He leased a property on 4 Roman Road, Easton Bristol. He gave the business a new name, “PAK Butchers – simply meaning “pure & clean”. Abdul’s achievements have benefited all communities, he is a mentor for young people who want to start their own business and has done a number of sessions with youth from Easton in Bristol, many of these children have been involved with crime and anti-social behaviour, and when all intervention has failed Abdul has managed to communicate and inspire these local youth. He was the first Asian, Muslim between 2005 and 2009 to be elected on the Council and helped deliver a local ‘PREVENT’ program and was part of a ‘Building the Bridges’ conference. He is a prospective candidate on a Liberal ticket for the Bristol West parliamentary 2015 elections.

Cllr Faruk Choudhury - First Asian Mayor of Bristol

Abdul became the voice for ‘Halal’ in the south west; often highlighting and creating awareness on the importance of Halal meat.

Faruk Choudhury, 38 and originally from Bangladesh, has been a councillor in Easton in 2007, became Lord Mayor on May the 21st 2013. Mr. Choudhury, who came to Britain as a student when he was 23, was planning to start a law degree at the University of the West of England in September but has delayed the start of his course for a year. He is a property businessman and previously owned a restaurant in Clifton called the Joy Raj. His primary concern is Britain’s shortage of transplant organs and some blood groups especially within BME populations. He went on to say, “Many people die unnecessarily each year as a result of donor deficiency. As Lord Mayor, Faruk campaigned tirelessly to create awareness across organisations encouraging blood and organ donors especially within BME communities. He is currently Deputy Lord Mayor and together with Shilpi runs a Deli, Chai Shai on Hot Wells road. Speaking exclusively to Mast after inauguration in 2013, he said, “This is a monumental honour for Bristol’s Asian community and all BME communities in the city. I will do everything I can to promote this great city for all people in the coming year,” I am humbled and overwhelmed by the response I have received from many communities.”

Woman of the year

His approach is innovative and he is passionate about education whilst maintaining his Sikh identity and values. Dr Shaheen Shahzadi Chaudhry

We moved to Bristol in the late sixties, 1968 to be exact. We came to Cambridge initially in 1964. My father was a GPO (General Post Office) installer working in the GPO offices so we moved around quite a bit in the South West, Sidmouth, Yeovil, Taunton, Cirencester and then Bristol., it was a nomadic life in those days really. I am very proud as a born and bred Bristolian, Bristol has a bad history with it being a slave port and only 50 years ago Bristol Omnibus and the Transport and General Workers Union were not allowing any black conductors or drivers. It’s phenomenal how things have changed.

“The award would mean that the world doesn’t stop at Bristol and that there is a vibrant ethnic minority community that lives here in Plymouth too. Awards don’t come easy and as 1 of 89 Sikhs in a city of 265,000 it is a testament to stand up, stand out and be part of the community.” Alex Raikes MBE:

Alex is Interim Director of Stand Against Racism & Inequality (SARI). Having graduated from Bristol University in Social Policy and Psychology and having worked with children with learning disabilities in care, Alex began working at SARI as its first caseworker in 1991.

“Any excuse we can use, any reason we can use then that should be used and I think that I want to be like a facilitator to bring the diversity of this city together and encourage people from our community to come forward and step into projects and public offices. Fahma Mohammed

MTM Community Champion Cllr Chaz Singh

Is Plymouths first elected Sikh councillor is the former Deputy Lord Mayor 2012-13 and the Labour Parliamentary Candidate for the General Election in 2015. He has worked with Prisons, schools, local community groups and businesses.. Chaz provides individually tailored educational programmes which promote racial harmony and positive community cohesion. He is also the organiser of the largest St George’s day celebrations in the Southwest in Plymouth raising money for local charities. Previously a successful retail manager Chaz has been able to apply and share his substantial knowledge within the wider community.

Alex has gained specialist and practical knowledge on the implications of all forms of hate crime in particular racist attacks and on delivering services to victims of such incidents. She has an extensive knowledge of other equalities and support services in the region and has been responsible for implementing core casework procedures, setting up anti-racist community partnerships, designing and providing specialist consultancy and training interventions and developing projects in response to the many demands on SARI. Crucially, as a dual heritage individual with 4 teenaged sons, Alex has first-hand experience of racial harassment and of running a busy and lively household. She brings this personal understanding to her work. “I am very honoured to have been put forward. For me I have a saying: “I will only pass this way once, if I can do good, let me do it now for I will not pass this way again”. It came from an elder in my family. I truly believe that every person in society should be valued, should have the same opportunities, should have their human rights met and should be able to thrive and achieve to their full potential. I abhor injustice, discrimination, prejudice and bullying of others or another person because they are different. Alex was awarded an MBE for her contribution to community relations in 2009.

MTM Empowering Women Farzana Saker

That racial attack led me to working with SARI – and after my case closed I joined up to be part of the committee, soon after being voted to be the Chair of SARI – Stand Against Racism and Inequality – and became a very active member of the committee under the guidance of Batook Pandya. Came to the UK from Pakistan as a schoolgirl learnt English and passed several exams to be employed by one of the big banks where she rose to become a manager with over a hundred staff. She has always been passionate about getting the immigrant population to integrate without compromising their religions and customs, and has worked in that field for many years in both paid and voluntary roles, with some success both in Bristol and in Wiltshire. She regrets that it was a slow process and hopes that her passion will bear fruit. Nazma Bibi Ramruttun

I achieved my dream to be a teacher – and my outstanding practice led me to be head hunted for Chair of Bristol SACRE where we monitor and advise on Religious Education in Bristol and promote tolerance and awareness of others. “I believe that I deserve to win this award – not for myself, but rather for what it represents to others. For all those pupils who have gone through my doors and been ignited with the passion to stand up for equalities, and still do. For the work I do on a daily, yearly basis to engage others in the fight for equality issues. For those that I have encouraged to stand up and fight and who have had the courage to do this.” I would be absolutely honoured to receive such an award. Mukhytar Singh - Turban burning incident

On the 29th of September 2013 an incident took place in the Bishopsworth area of Bristol. 5 young women called a taxi to be taken home to Swindon in the early hours of the morning. They were inebriated. They did not have enough money to pay for the taxi. When the taxi driver – who happened to be Asian Sikh asked them to vacate the taxi they refused, used foul language and racially abused him. These women then went on to physically assault him, to attack his vehicle and finally one of them tore the Turban off his head and set fire to it in front of him.

She came to England in 1972 to do my Psychiatric Nurse Training, (Mental Health) at Fair Mile Hospital near Oxford. After qualification I came to Swindon in 1976 to get married. I did my diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling and Couple Counselling Certificate with Swindon Counselling Service in 1994 She worked with people with Learning Disabilities at Burderop hospital, Autistic children at West Stowel clinic, Acute Mental Health and the Elderly at Seymour Clinic. She became involved with the Community since 1993. “As past Chair of Swindon Race Equality Coalition and Vice Chair of Women Equality Coalition with Swindon Borough Council and currently vice-chair I have worked towards bringing a better understanding amongst communities and strive for racial equality and tolerance. I am also a member of the Swindon Equality Access Group”.

Unsung Hero Esther Deans

Growing up in London of Jamaican parentage during the 70’s and 80’s showed me that life wasn’t always fair – but you could either moan and accept it, or stand up and do something about it. Even as a child I loved to help others, my dream was to be a teacher. I did well at school and University – standing on various committees and won scholarships to study abroad – but it was when I came to Bristol I had a horrible racial attack.

The driver went to the police the following day to get an update but was not satisfied with their response. Finally, the victim went to his own community and his complaint was heard. After consultation with the regional Sikh organisations’ leadership it was decided to take up issue with Avon and Somerset Constabulary. Mukhytar Singh, a local community leader, was chosen to represent the case and the wider Sikh Community. Mukhytar Singh approached SARI with the victim and some of his supporters and it was decided that a meeting should be called between the community leadership and senior police officers to be chaired by SARI at its offices. “The offender apologised to the victim in court and I hope this means she fully understands the seriousness of her actions. The criminal damage caused was only of a low value financially but the impact of the crime on the victim was profound – it deeply affected his confidence and his life as a whole.

Established in 1988, S.A.R.I. has been operational since 1991. It was the brainchild of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) housing provider United Housing Association. The victims of racism in Bristol received no coordinated response or specialist support from agencies. A steering group with the aim of remedying this situation was set up in 1988. It consisted of agencies such as Bristol Racial Equality Council,

Is known for her fearlessness in court, down to earth style, pleasing to juries and clients alike, and her ability for careful and sensitive yet robust cross-examination. Anjali has developed a real ability to tackle a voluminous case load whilst ensuring that she demonstrates the high level of advocacy required. This is particularly the case where the delicate area of sexual crime is concerned, a field in which Anjali is used to defending in complex cases involving historic inter familial allegations, stranger rape, rape of minors, child defendants, gang rape, sexual harassment in the work environment and rape in the context of relationships/marriage. Anjali has also, over the course of her practice developed a great deal of experience defending those with mental health issues.

Nominee Special Recognition Award 2014!

Liban Abdi

Liban Abdi arrived in Bristol in 2003 having lived in London previously. He started his career at Learn Direct as an employee later setting up the 1st Somali mobile phone shop. He realised the local community was having difficulty securing phone contracts, therefore providing security for them to secure these contracts made it possible for them to get contracts. In 2007 he took over an old pub, Russell Pub in Lawrence and converted it into a Learning Centre, which to this day he is still director of the centre. This enabled locals to acquire skills in IT, language and community issues. Soon Liban became a household name amongst the local community especially the Somali community and as expected they backed his candidature for the Bristol civic elections to be their local councillor. Standing as an independent candidate secured a good 800 votes. “I am highly honoured that my efforts are being recognised, I believe in empowering the local communities and have over the years strived to assist the Somalian community in Bristol start-up businesses and acquire knowledge in IT and all other fields, this nomination means a lot to my community and family” Karl Brown

I am from Bristol and grew up in Downend and attended Downend Secondary School. I studied law at the University of Hertfordshire gaining a 2:1 LLB (Hons) and then completed a post graduate diploma in Law at the University of the West of England, Bristol. I am also the current President of local business group the Bristol Junior Chamber (“BJC”). Before becoming President I was Vice President and before that I spent four years as the Chair of Education & Skills at the BJC.

Anira Khokhar

“I think my winning the award would be further evidence of the latter point and would be excellent profile raising of an example of someone from a modest background getting into the legal profession and into the business community. I did not find entering into the legal profession very easy and in fact had to send over one hundred applications in order to get a job as a trainee solicitor. If I win the award then I think this will assist in my continuing to promote the issue of social mobility and ensuring equal access to professions such as law “.

Anira Khokhar grew up in Bristol, and graduated in Media from the University of the West of England. She spent sixteen years (1998 present) working in the community and voluntary sector in Bristol, working both in voluntary and paid positions. She has worked with the various communities of Bristol in Housing, Advice and Advocacy, Events, Women and Young People, Extremism, Mental Health, Domestic Violence, Forced Marriages, Hate Crimes, Community Radio, Education, Front Line Practitioners, Local Council. Earlier this year Anira started to write monthly articles for the Bristol Post which tackles many issues that the Muslim communities are facing but from a Muslim women’s perspective. Anira will be started her role as the Fundraising and Marketing Manager for a national organisation based in London, in December 2014.

Rahi Bains:

East African Legend

Most of my contemporaries grew up in East Africa with the voice of Rahi Bains. He was also a teacher at Technical High School where he taught some of my friends. I was envious that they knew him in person whereas I only was privy to his singing on Voice of Kenya Radio Station. Little did I know in those days that I would find out more information from him by personal association one day. He was legendary singer in East Africa who whose work was recognised in UK. In recognition of his extraordinary singing talent he has been given following awards: • Mohd. Rafi award as an Honour for Creative Work in Music by The Guru Nanak Universal Sewa, U.K. • The Osterley Lions Club, London, the Melvin Jones FellowAward for Dedicated Humanitarian Services. • Award for Services to Punjabi Culture by “The Punjabi Circle International” Let us look at the life and times of the awardee Rahi Bains and his musical achievements Rahi Bains was born in Punjab in 1939 and moved to Kenya in 1947 to join his parents. His father worked for East African Railways. British imported workers from Punjab to work on first railway line built from Mombasa to Nairobi. In Kenya Rahi showed an aptitude to music. He was trained in Indian Classical Music by two of his gurus, Ustad Manmohan Singh Musapuri and Pandit Manesh Chandra Kansara. His first singing debut, on air was with Voice of Kenya Broadcasting station in 1956, when he sang in the children’s programme Phulwari presented by pioneer in broadcasting Bhia Moorti. His first appearance in regular evening programmes was on 15th May 1957 when he gave rendition of Aye Mere Punjab Payare in Punjabi programme. He never looked back after that session and demonstrated his talent by singing songs in Punjabi, Gujrati, Urdu ghazals, quwalis, bhajans, Bengali folk and Swahili songs. In those days it was the Policy of Voice of Kenya station that musicians were not allowed to sing songs already recorded by other artists. This meant that one had to come up with original compositions of songs and tunes. This provided Rahi Bains with ample opportunities to create his original lyrics and musical compositions. His first ever commercial recording was an EP of Swahili songs, one of which was called Mpenzi Wangu Dolika. It became an instant hit and was extremely popular with Kenyans. In 1967 a Swahili film was produced in Kenya and Rahi Bains was the play back singer. Two songs from the film elevated him to celebrity status in Kenya. These were, “ Eve Mola Ni Bariki and “ Sikizeni Wanainchi. 1961, Ushered in winds of Political changes in Kenya towards an Independent state. Voice of Kenya station was first causality as Asian broadcasting was going to be phased out. However, Rahi continued singing privately due to his popularity. He left Kenya in 1967 and settled in UK. Here he worked hard and saved money to study western classical music as a full time student and sang in many operas. In UK, he displayed his singing talent on BBC radio, TV and various commercial TV stations. As a music director, he has composed and arranged music for well-known singers such as Hazara Singh Ramta, Sardool Sikandar, Hans Raj Hans, Minoo Prashotam, Pushpa Hans, Narinder Mankee and many local groups such as Premi, Sunny, Amar and aag. He has recorded numerous CD’s of his own songs. He regularly gives performance and does voice over for radio advertisements. Over the years, it has been a pleasure to accompany Rahi Bains as his personal professional photographer. On stage, his charisma and extrovert personality shines through. He is an entertainer who mesmerises the audience and gets them involved in his performance. Having seen him perform, its no doubt that he has been a well-deserved recipient of various awards. Mohinder Singh Chowdhury

Came to UK in 1956, settling in Oxford before coming to Bristol in 1960. As immigrants we were out of our culture and far away from our families so it was important we had to be together. I had come to England to study law but as my knowledge of English was limited I had to take English language classes. I had to take up a job to sustain my education which I did and found difficult to cope as my working hours did not fit with my study schedule, so on advice from a friend I ventured into business starting a restaurant, Kohinoor, in 1960 on Denmark Street. In association with the students union of Bristol University, and other international Muslim students from Nigeria, Iraq Iran & Kuwait we formed a Muslim Association with the aim to establish a Mosque in 1963. Our dream was realised in 1968 when we bought St. Catherine Hall in Totterdown and converted it to a mosque. Many immigrants found themselves out touch with their motherland so we resolved to settle here. This brought the need for housing, learning the English language, adjusting to the English way of life yet maintaining our roots and culture. As many did not understand the system and many had the myths of back home that as landlord they could not be tenants here, this prompted us to address the issue. Together with community & business friends Syed Anwar and Mohammed Hayat and I decided to form a Housing Association for the South Asian people in Bristol – Ashiana Housing Association. Harbhajan Singh Dulay

Was born in Rawalpindi India (now in Pakistan); Mohinder arrived in Bristol in 1962 for further education. After qualifying as a civil structural engineer he practiced in the engineering field for 14 years before establishing his private business, Davenport International limited, dealing in exports of hides and skins. Mohinder Chowdhury has been very active in community projects in the South West organizing community events, dinners, and awareness processions and assisting in housing projects. He is an active member of Sikh community and one of the organisers of Nagar Kirtan during the Baisakhi festival.

Community leader and real estate entrepreneur Dulay Singh is the chairman of Sikh Gurdwara St George, Bristol. He has strived to build bridges amongst the different temples and supports local charities and currently is building a temple in his home state of punjab. Speaking to MTM Mr Dulay Singh says, “I am honoured to have been nominated for this award amongst some great community leaders in the South west.”
