...our journey Our work in the community started in 2004 on Comm FM. In 2005 our founder launched the 1st Islamic Radio RSL (restricted service licence) Radio Station for the South West Muslim community. Junior was headed a training programme voluntary radio presenters early 2005 to the broadcast date in October. Radio Ramadhan Bristol was a 24 hour Islamic channel. In 2008 he founded Radio Mast FM, the 1st Asian Radio Station in the South West and South Wales incorporating all faiths and communities in the broadcast. This was followed by the founding of Mast The Magazine in 2009, a first and only magazine for the Asian & Ethnic communities in the South West and South Wales, The magazine celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2019, a moment we are all proud of and thank our local small business and organisation, like SARI for supporting the magazine since then.

We are not only about glitz and glamour.. We support communities & charities across international waters, and those on our doorstep. Our founder realised the need to honour Ethnic communities in 2011 after seeing that all the local Bristol Awards did not feature any Asian and Ethnic communities. MTM South West Asian Awards was founded in 2012, launched by the then newly elected Mayor of Bristol, George Ferguson. Two of our prominent guests are sat in the audience tonight, Cllr Ian Boulton of Staple Hill and three times Lord Mayor; Cllr. Peter Abraham who presented the first award on that inaugural evening, who to date has not missed a single event since 2012. In 2014 we re-branded as MTM Asian, Black & Ethnic Awards, and in 2016 further spread our wings by introducing a National Award For Excellence & Achievement and a Special International Award. This year we have three National Awards up for grabs and a fantastic list of international nominees most of whom are with us tonight.

Since inception we have supported various national, international and local charites with Help for Heroes being our first in 2012. In 2017 Junior, Raffi, and Joe organised a 10 day London to Bristol, Ivory Belongs To Elephant Walk to create awareness of the plight of the African Elephant. This year our chosen Charity is Dementia UK. When things get challenging or difficult, Admiral Nurses work alongside people with dementia, and their families: giving them one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions. The unique dementia expertise and experience an Admiral Nurse brings is a lifeline .. It helps families to live more positively with dementia in the present, and to face the challenges of tomorrow with more confidence and less fear. We also support a number of local charities including Plastic Pollution & Awareness Projects, who raise awareness with different faith groups at local mosques, temples and churches, run workshops with the BME Community, bring people together with community action projects, and much more. Their big project at the moment is the Bristol Tree Planting Project 2019. During our time here, we have made it our mission to showcase our rich and diverse city on a national level, and across International waters. In the community we have supported many charity groups, community organisations and local businesses. 2019 is been a challenging year for our founder who lost his brother to Prostate `Cancer and as we prepare to launch a project in Kenya to create awareness of this cause in 220 we also take pride of having the largest participation nominees for the International Award For excellence & achievement spread across the Asian, African and the Middle East. Some of those nominees are here with us tonight thanks to the British high Commissions in these countries for issuing visas to attend. We thank our panel of judges, our volunteers, performers, partners , the Bristol Marriott City Centre, Hilton Double Tree Redcliffe, and supporters, and above all, our nominees and guests without whom this would not happen.

My home city of Bristol is more diverse than when I was at school & we are proud to wear that diversity on our sleeve - 91 languages, 187 countries of birth; 45 religions & faiths practised. The city and indeed the world is so much more intertwined & we all need to take time out once in a while to appreciate & celebrate our many cultures. The MTM Awards does just that by bringing together an array of worthy nominees from across the South West whose work in this space need to be shouted about and recognised. MTM Awards is a unique opportunity for the diverse communities in the South West of England to not only showcase it’s many myriads of talent, in all areas but to also acknowledge and be recognised for them by others and peers. I am happy to have been attending since 2014, and enjoy every season with this community initiative.

Our communities need to know that we are valuable in every way. Differences are part of our strengths; we should embrace and share them with each other. This is what makes life interesting. “UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL”. So let us start to change the world a little at a time by getting to know and understand each other. L.I.S.T.E.N. – Look Inside Silently To Experience Nurture – taken from Anndeloris Chacon book – Listen -2017 Remember that to make change we have to start with ourselves before we look at others.

Guru Dev Ji 550th Birthday During the 15th century, prior to the discovery of the Americas and before many revolutions had taken place across Europe, a spiritual revolution had pioneered in the East.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji basic philosophy can be

An amazing spiritual soul revealed a unique way of life tk the people in India and its surrounding countries.

Kirat karni - to work and earn in a honest way

Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of the Sikh faith was born in modern day Pakistan in 1469 and spent his life travelling over many different continents spreading the message of love and equality to many. Guru Nanak Dev Ji cared little for divisive labels “Na koi Hindu, Na koi Mussalman” - There are neither Hindus nor Muslims. All human beings regardless of race, religion or fender are equal in the eyes of God. “God created light, His power gave birth to all. All beings are born from the same light, how can some be goodand some be bad? Your caste and rank depend on your own actions, do not be proud of your caste” Guru Nanak Dev Ji explained that the spiritual goal of life is to unite with Waheguru (God). This is achieved through devotion to righteous actions, love and service of all and constang meditation on Gods name. Guru Nanak Dev Ji initiated Langar ( community kitchen) and to tjis day around the world it is still being served. May I take this opportunity to thank everyone for listening and being able to have some knowledge of the founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

EcoSikh is part of the celebrations that would observe 550 years from the time Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh religion, was born.

EcoSikh The president of EcoSikh, Rajwant Singh, wanted to observe the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak in a manner suit to the importance of the event. He stated that the idea to protect Nature was a logical development as Guru Nanak himself loved Nature and has stated the same to be God’s demonstration. Angel Wanjiru Anne Ngugi’s daughter Angel Wanjiru has wowed the internet after narrating how she has overcome her health problems and accompanying bullying and is now pursuing her dream of becoming a musician. Angel was born with a congenital disorder called hydrocephalus (a build-up of excess cerebrospinal fluid in the brain at birth), which means she has a bigger head than other people. However, at just 14, she’s produced her first album. In an interview with BBC What’s News’s, Angel reveals that initially she was concerned why she was born different from other children and why people stole glances at her but with time, she accepted her condition and learnt that the best way to deal with bullying is through songs. “Mum, why am I different from other people? Why is it that when I pass, people laugh at me?” she used to ask her mother, who she says only responded by singing. I came across her story through her BBC interview and pursued to invite her join the South West community at the MTM Awards 2019. Through our BBC London contact we tracked Angel and set the ball rolling. A Good Samaritan sponsored Angel and Anne’s air travel. GOD BLESS YOU All

Ghana Community Bristol The Malcolm X Elders Forum is a social club for older people set up to combat isolation and loneliness in the aging population. It caters for people in the St Paul’s catchment area but people also come from further afield. Pradeep Bhardwaj I cherish the most is establishing the first Hindu temple and cultural centre in Swindon and the region to enhance the lives of over 10,000 people, especially since they have been yearning for it for last 50-60 years, then to bring these many diverse communities together so as to leverage the strong, united community base to make long lasting contributions to wider society.

Team Durga Purja

Natalie - Amber

We celebrate an Indian festival of Durga puja, widely celebrated in India as Navratri.

I raise awareness for both Crohn’s and Colitis and Body Confidence. As a model I understand the stigma of looking ‘Photoshop perfect’ and since my life changing operation and close to death with both kidney failure, sepsis and a stoma bag which has left me with a large scars on my stomach and on medication which has changed my appearance I want the world to see that real woman come in all shapes and sizes and we are all beautiful and need to be represented in the fashion world.

Celebrating same festival slightly differently, is about sharing customs with rest of community. In southwest we initiated this celebration 2 years ago, if we hadn’t done this people had to travel across country to take part in this particular celebration. Ashish Channawar A successful technology leader in Financial Crime areas such as Counter fraud, anti-money laundering, counter terrorism financing has helped many financial services and Government agencies to make the world a safer place. Saed Mohamoud Ali Youth empowerment was one of the initiatives that I worked for betterment of the youth that lives in the inner city. I was treasure working voluntarily over 3yrs for Horn Youth Concern. I took part in the process of Targetted Youth Project which eventually was given Creative Youth Organisation.

Subhaan Ali I’m a young Muslim teenager, who wants to challenge the negative stereotypes of Muslims teenager’s boys, by activily getting involved in local community, social events and performing well academically Masoon Khan I lead the Chance to Shine Street projects aiming to inspire young people to access cricket, whilst promoting social cohesion. Alan Mercel-Sanca

Yousra Abbas I am a mother, a wife and community worker. I work at the St Mary Redcliffe school in Bristol where I am in contact with students and parents on regular basis. My job puts me in the front of community cohesion and because of that I am able to use my experience with fellow teachers and parents to assist my Sudanese community. Doaa Shayea I have been a wheelchair racer since I was 12 years old competing all around the country and with a dream of the Paralympics. I then took up the beauty business and had my own. Being a freelance beautician and working with women to give them their desired looks and confidence!

It is a great honour to be proposed for any MTM award, and most of all Person of the Year, especially. What I do matters more than me as a person and so the nomination is a tribute to the communities I serve the UK Nepal Friendship Society. Service to Community is at the heart of all my work. Almost all of us have loved ones, family members, friends, who have been touched, had their lives (and often businesses) disrupted marred or even threatened by the so-called ‘Hostile Environment’ a defacto anti-genuine visa, asylum, leave to remain applicants regime with major, with very real community division and race relations harm causing purposes & characteristics.

Joyce Stephenson Joyce Stephenson now deceased was Paul Stephenson’s wife. Unfortunately this nomination comes at a time when she is no longer with us, however this does not diminish the support that she gave Paul Stephenson over the long period of their partnership. Dr Stephenson was one of three men who helped change the course of history in Bristol forever and has been praised during the awards by Lenny Henry. Dr Stephenson helped highlight the racism black people faced in this country and led the victorious Bristol Bus Boycott in 1963. There is a saying that Behind Every Great Man There Is A Woman. Joyce Stephenson has been with Paul in all these journeys, always accompanying and supporting him at every step of the way. Always the dutiful wife - I recall one evening in London where Paul was set to receive an award and he turned round to Joyce to ask for her assurance that he had made a difference - she was his constant companion, elevating him, even at the age of 82, having been married for 54 years. Joyce passed away having spent her life beside one of the Greatest Civil Rights Campaigners - it is time she receives her Honour in relation to a Lifetime Achievement. May her soul rest in peace.
