INTRODUCTION After an unpresendated and difficult year for us all, we look forward to seeing the rich & diverse businesses & community groups get back to a remblance of normality, & congratulate all of the fantastic community groups & individuals, who have pulled together to help and support eachother. This year, the three Religious Celebrations started on the same day, 13th April 2021. The Hindu festival of Navratri, the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan, and the Sikh festival of Vaishaki. In the just concluded Mayoral and civic elections, there have been some surprises, and some new faces, with the green party benefiting most in Bristol. the Conservatives enjoying a good ride in Gloucester and Swindon, and a host of Independant councillors in Plymouth. We bid farewell to the Mayor of the West of England, Tim Bowles, and the Police & Crime Commisioner, Sue Mountstevens, both did not seek reelection. We thank them for the support we enjoyed at the MTM Awards, our sister organisation. Our cover girl is young Namite Leisbeth, an aspiring musician & environmental activist. Namite is of Italian & Tanzanian heritage, now based in Italy. She is an MTM Music & Entertainment award finalist 2020.

THE BIG COMEBACK

Small businesses come back stronger… Covid closures have been a challenge to the hospitality industry as restaurants, bars and hotels grappled with navigating regulations and developing new income streams. With a mix of hard work, and incredible new ideas, there will life after lockdown and things can get better.

Most coronavirus rules will remain in place in England for another four weeks after the planned 21 June unlocking. The reopening of indoor hospitality on the 17th has driven a surge in hiring, with employers struggling to fill vacancies as furloughed workers dwindles and Brexit curbs recruitment from the EU.

First we look at the rules we all have to follow

Staffing has been an issue even to the big players; some have to re-recruit whole departments.

Pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants are allowed to serve customers indoors

Groups of six or up-to two households allowed inside

Seated outside may have up to 30 people

All persons over 16 check in with NHS track and trace, or provide contact details

People still need to order, eat and drink while seated, where alcohol is served

When not seated or being shown to a table, or going to the toilet -customers must wear face coverings

Social distancing between groups is encouraged

Capacity is restricted to what is possible with social distancing and table service

Roobroo Thornbury 01454 412202

The Hair, Beauty and Fashion sector are

slightly better off with staffing as most though closed, and kept busy with regular webinar and so did the DJs with regular LIVE social media sessions with a small charge to join in.

Franclins Salon Swindon 07766 211417 We visited a few that are connected with our sister organisation the MTM Awards, these are either past winners, finalist or nominees, most have had a facelift, I guess there was no better time than during the lockdown to rid premises of the hidden

cobwebs and dust. Billboards are littered on the social platforms each highlight offers and packaged deals as they re-open. Our sister organisation MTM Awards were not able to complete the MTM 2020 Awards evening, and now hope to finalise on Saturday July 31st at its usual base the Bristol Marriott Hotel who remained closed from march 2020 and have re-opened on May 17th 2021.

During a conversation with a wife, I had to help her understand the difference between her role as a wife and that of the carer for her husband. I helped her identify the roles which she carried out that she would not have done if her husband were well. Then the light bulb came on. I also asked, “What time they did have together as husband and wife?” Her first reaction was that she is busy with making sure that he is safe that she did not realise they did not have time together.

EMPOWERING & SUPPORTING YOUNG AND ADULT CARERS

BRISTOL BLACK CARERS Dementia is a condition which the Caribbean, African, Asian, and Chinese communities are having some difficulty to understanding because it is not a physical condition that you can see. To give a simple explanation, it can be described as medical condition where the brain is dying and mental condition which presents with personality changes. Also, the physical body deteriorates as the brain forgets to how to function and sometimes at some stage, they are unable to eat or swallow. The gravity of this condition destroys the carers as they watch their loved one, change and disappear before their eyes. Most of the focus is placed on the person with Dementia within the health and social care system. There needs to be a dual approach for us to reduce the medical, physical, mental, and emotional impact on the carers. The carers are suffering as well because they are not prepared for the change that occur with their loved ones as the disease progresses with time. The carers watch their loved one change before their eyes, and some do not are prepared or know to how to manage this condition. In Bristol research was carried out in three communities, Caribbean, Chinese and South Asian to capture the carers’ perspective which published and launched in February 2017 at City Hall, Bristol. “The Dementia Experiences of People from Caribbean, Chinese and South Asian Communities in Bristol (R. Chester et al … 2017)”.

@BLACKCARERS

Sharron shared her explanation of Dementia to a friend when he described his mother as stubborn or unwilling to do what they asked of her. She asked him, “If you had a broken arm would you like someone to force you to use it?” His answer was, “No.” Sharron then said to him, “Then why do you expect your mother to respond to your requests when her brain is broken.” Her friend said, “Now I understand, and will shar this with my siblings.” Sharron, described her experience of caring for her mother with Dementia until she died, as getting to know a new person. Her mother sang and talked about things from her past. Sharron also said it was difficult watching the lady she knew disappear as she learned more about the new person who presented to her. Sharron had to rely on her patience, ability to remain calm, using soft tone of voice to respond, not correcting what was said but just acknowledging and maintain positive and joyous energy around her mother. These are the skills she was able to identify that helped her to enjoy the time with her mother at home and when she had to be placed in a care home.

This research was initiated by Rosa Hui MBE DL – Director, Bristol & Avon Chinese Women Group. In these communities both culturally and traditionally it is viewed as an obligation to take care of their loved ones and most carers suffer in silence as they manage the best they can do. It is difficult to witness the changes in personality which varies with everyone. Some people with dementia can be aggressive and abusive, some lose all their inhibitions, some become childlike, and others develop a new persona. There is an old saying, “Once a man, twice a child” to bring this statement into this era it should read, “Once and Adult, Twice a Child”. Sharron, one of our service users stated her mother repeated that saying to her many times while growing up and it was only when, her mother suffered with Dementia that this statement became a reality for her. Carers may not realise that they are grieving with the loss that is occurring before them each day. The emotional impact of this is never truly realised because we think of grief only when the physical death occurs. The lifestyle of the carer changes to match that of the person with Dementia and in some instances, some give up work entirely to care for their loved one. While others may not be able to do so, they plan their work life around the person with Dementia. These changes are suttle and gradual that most carers do not see what they have shifted from their lives to be able to accommodate their caring role.

Another aspect the wife spoke about was the arguments due husband’s lack of memory. She viewed it as him being difficult and not wanting to hear her side. I explained to her that his brain could not recall the memory about this issue in question therefore he could not respond appropriately. I described it to her as him being in a bubble when she raised the issue and whatever she is saying at that moment was just bouncing on the outside of the bubble. Therefore, she would have to let go of the issue and by doing so she would reduce her stress level. She breathed a sigh of relief and said that she wished someone had explained it to her before which would have reduced the arguments, she had with him.

@BRISTOLBLACKCARERS

Those of us who surround the Carers are not conscious of this turmoil they are experiencing. There is the guilt and shame they feel as they see their loved one not functioning as they did before. Some carers think they are protecting their loved one by not letting others know about the Dementia. Some literally isolate the person and themselves so they do not have to explain the condition. Depending on how the personality changes some are embarrassed because they do not know what their loved one might say or how many times, they may say the same sentence or possibly presenting themselves inappropriately. The carer most times try to correct the person with Dementia but unfortunately, the brain does not understand the correction and they repeat the same story. Frustration, anger, impatience, and other feeling are experienced by the carer and they sometimes feel the person is deliberately acting that way. Some carers will tell you that was not the character of their loved one or they may also say the person stubbornness has increased with the Dementia. Family and friends should give some attention to the carer and ask how they are or even give them some time out to take care of themselves. A simple thing to do is to offer to sit with the person with Dementia for a few hours so that the carer can sleep or go out can a huge impact on their mental wellbeing. Remember a little time goes a long way to improve mental wellbeing when shared. Some cares have identified that they have received some form of information, mostly leaflets but that did not prepare them for what was going to happen. They also need to have someone to discuss with them and their loved one the effect of Dementia to help them understand what changes can or may occur. We all would love to care for our loved ones at home or in their own homes but sometimes this is not possible due to the level of care required which may be twenty-four hours for seven days a week. This is intense and will be both physically and emotionally draining for one person to give constantly. Helping the carer to be able to identify this crucial point will help to reduce stress, anxiety, and guilt when this decision for their loved one to be admitted to a care home must be made. People who are not living with carer and their loved-one should be aware that their positive or negative comments great impact on the carer. Talk with the carer to know what is happening for them so that you can offer support where needed. Dementia is a destroyer of lives for the person who is diagnosed with it, the carer, the family, and friends. Sadly, it is one that is not reversible, the person slips in and out until they are no longer there. So, I suggest to everyone to make new memories each day because the person will not remember the one you made yesterday.

Bristol & Avon Chinese Women’s Group Bristol and Avon Chinese Women’s Group (BACWG) is working as part of a network of 24 East and South East Asian community groups across England who have joined together to confront and support victims of COVID-19 related hate crime. The project which was launched in December 2020, is led by the Chinese Welfare Trust, Newham Chinese Association and Protection Approaches and funded by the National Lottery Community Fund with BACWG being selected as the regional representative for this campaign in the South-West. Since the pandemic, hate crime targeted towards East and South East Asians has risen dramatically. Reported hate crime directed towards ESEA groups has increased over 300% on previous years during the first few weeks of the pandemic. This is extremely concerning as the impact of hate crime on victims can be highly detrimental not only to the victim themselves but to the community as a whole, with psychological distress, helplessness and division being just a few of the long-lasting consequences of hate crime. Therefore, in response to this, since March 2021, BACWG have started its work on hate crime which will help community members identify and understand the meaning of hate crime, answer common concerns regarding reporting and show where to receive support if they are a victim. As part of this campaign, BACWG will be producing a series of digital infographics, information booklets and videos in community languages which will be shared with the community via social media and volunteers. By raising the awareness of race and culture-based hate crime, BACWG are hoping to build a consistent and resilient communityled response to the worsening attacks against the East and South East Asian community. In order to achieve this, we need to make a collective effort as a community to raise awareness about not only how we can recognise hate crime and support victims but also educate others on what part they can play in contributing towards a more tolerant and fair society. If you would like to find out more information about this campaign or access our hate crime awareness materials, please contact our Chinese Lantern Project Helpline on 0808 8020012 or our BACWG WeChat at bacwg89. Supporting Period Poverty Action Projects by MTM

MTM Awards have launched Period

Poverty Awareness Projects as one of the campaigns to mark the 10th anniversary. Earmarking a project of dire need is not new to the MTM Awards team; in 2017 we launched the Great London To Bristol Ivory Belongs To Elephant Walk, that created awareness

Stigma There is a huge stigma and lack of understanding around menstruation. This stigma exists even in cases or communities where poverty is not an issue. In cases where poverty does place challenges on menstruation, period shaming only further exacerbates the issue.

Why Lamu?

on the senseless slaughter of the African Elephant.

Our first stop will be Lamu County in Kenya. Our chosen partners for this project in 2021 is Huris Foundation FAZA, a newly estabilished local organisation based in Mombasa Kenya with deep roots in Faza. Huris Foundation FAZA is already laying the ground work to connect with girls, and use that opportunity to teach them about puberty, hygiene, and gender-based violence and how to remain healthy over the duration of your period. Lamu Island is separated from mainland Kenya by just a narrow channel of water, but in every other respect it is far, far removed from there. Approachable only by plane or boat – there are no roads or cars on the island - Lamu feels unbelievably remote. At the same time, the island is full of echoes from other places for its history is steeped in foreign influences, like Portuguese, Chinese, Omani and Persian. A few small towns and villages are dotted around Lamu, nestled against high sand dunes, tracts of mangrove forest, or long stretches of golden beach. The seascape is punctuated by the white sails of dhows. The streets are dotted with men in multi-hued Kikois or simple Jellabiyas/ Djellabas, women in Bui Bui's, kids in school uniforms made from crazy shades of pink, green or yellow fabric, donkeys carrying colourful loads of fruits and vegetables, sand or coral stone.

PERIOD POVERTY

ACTION PROJECTS Period Poverty Action Projects By MTM Unlike the Elephant Campaign the Period Poverty Awareness Project is expected to be an ongoing campaign where we link with organisations ‘on the ground in Kenya’ to do as much as can be done with the support of our partners to elevate awareness of this ‘shadow pandemic’. Our focus as we launch this project is to provide sanitary pads and educate girls from puberty age to 19 as our first step.

Why Period Poverty?

Period poverty affects women and girls all over the world. Access to sanitary products, safe, hygienic spaces in which to use them and the right to manage menstruation without shame or stigma, is essential for anyone who menstruates. But for many, this is not a reality. This is not just a potential health risk - it can also mean women and girls' education, well-being, and sometimes entire lives are affected. Periods are a normal part of life. It is increasingly recognised that good menstrual health is an essential component to wellbeing. “Can you imagine not being able to afford or access sanitary products to help manage your period? Period poverty is the lack of access to sanitary products due to financial constraints, this can be negative impact on a girl or woman’s ability to access sanitary products to manage a most intimate and regular occurrence in her life.” Period poverty refers to the common challenge plaguing women globally wherein they are unable to attend schools or work as a cause of a lack of funds for sanitary products.

photo credit Hamid Lens Kenya PPAP hopes to make a difference to communities in this region and teaming up with Huris Foundation FAZA we hope we can create global awareness, educate, and support these girls. In the long-term we intend to use local materials and flannel to provide products to many girls in schools in the in the village of Faza and gradually moving from village to village. In the second phase of this project we intend to support girls by providing panties as we have been informed that most make do with two or three panties and in some cases the panties are not of a body friendly material. We kick start our campaign with a collection of environmental friendly sanitary towels and donations, details of which are posted on the MTM Awards website and social platforms.

Our Mission Your care in your control

Our mission is to offer the best solutions and service possible so we’re the smart choice and first choice for our customers.

Our Values

We’re here when you need us. Shinning Care ltd is based in Bristol. They are a home care organisation providing services for diverse people in Bristol. Shining Care are the first Somali led caring provider in the area. We met with the director Mahamed Dalal and manager Mahmoud Matan to talk about how they started. They highlighted the importance of services they provide, what they offer to Bristol’s multicultural community and motivation behind providing care provisions in Bristol. It was clear, talking to both men that this was an issue that was personal and something that they wanted to start to help their community to access services that are very much needed. Mahmoud went on to explain “we identified that this was an issue, so we sat down to think about what we should do. Mahamed stated “We put our self through certain courses. Shining Care Ltd registered in 2015, and as described by Mahmoud, “we started slowly” ensuring they were up to the entire correct standard required by both local authorities, the Care Quality Commission and industry standards. “We took a lot of time to get it right, we worked with GP’s and attended many consultations to see what is needed as well as visiting care homes and liaising with other local care organisations. Mahamed explained that the company has seen great growth since they started, “in the last two years we have seen growth” he said. “This shows that there was a need within the communities for a caring company”. Shining Care trains new carers and provides local jobs that people may not have had access to. He went on to say, “we could see that people were not getting jobs in the care industry”. We asked what he thought the reasons for this are. He felt that other organisation do not look outside their traditional methods of recruiting.

NVQ level 1, 2 & 3 health and social care Some of our staff have fully qualified and have moved on to careers in nursing and healthcare. We are also working with closing with organisations in Bristol to identify other health issues and needs within ours and the wider community. The agency’s acting director general Mamo Mamo told Reuters it initially approved the EIA because of the project’s endorsement by the Amboseli Ecosystem Trust, a coalition that includes community groups and government representatives, but changed its position when the Trust withdrew approval. FRUIT EXPORTS V TOURIST CASH With ideal conditions for growing the fruit, Kenya’s avocado export revenues surged 33% to 14 billion Kenyan shillings (about $127 million) in the year to October 2020, government data shows. They are undoubtedly among the most iconic creatures on the planet, and yet they are being slaughtered at a terrifying rate. For millennia after millennia, they have lived safely in the wild. No predator could threaten them, due to their immense wisdom and sheer size. But today humans have bullets. And bullets find as much resistance ripping through those adaptations as your boot would find as it stomped on a big, grey puddle. They’re struggling to cope. Poaching is running rife due to a vast market hungry for their tusks, meat and skin and their numbers are falling.

special feature:

ELEPHANT vs AVOCADO Environment and natural habitats for communities to leave in harmony with the wildlife is our primary objective to highlight.Kenya for decades has seen a conflict of animal and human share of space as many Kenyan communities depend on farming and that share between the two has always been an issue. The Elephants or avocados is a major a Kenyan dilemma The majestic sight of elephants roaming beneath Mount Kilimanjaro has long lured throngs of wildlife-lovers to Amboseli National Park on Kenya’s border with Tanzania.

Elephant conservation – in Asia as well as Africa – has featured prominently throughout FFI’s long history. In addition to securing the landscapes and corridors of habitat that these massive mammals require, and defusing the conflict between people and elephants that may arise when their worlds collide, we are also addressing the issue of ivory poaching and its devastating impact on elephants. The senseless slaughter of a magnificent tusker for its super-sized incisors is all the more sickening once you gain an insight into the beast behind the ivory. Elephants have the largest brain of any terrestrial mammal, a memory impressive enough to have inspired a proverb, and a complex matriarchal social structure that creates powerful family bonds – they even appear to mourn their dead. MTM organised the first-ever Great London to Bristol Ivory Belongs To Elephant Walk and invited a team of seven from Kenya to participate in the 200-mile walk. The Great London to Bristol Ivory Belongs To Elephant Walk was the brainchild of Junior Sheikh the director of MTM Awards and was led by Raffi Sheikh who together with Joe Hawkins mapped out the route and the overnight stops.

In 2017 our sister organisation MTM Awards organised a

campaign to create awareness

on the senseless slaughter of the African Elephant.

Yet the free movement of some 2,000 Amboseli elephants, along with two dozen other wildlife species plus cows owned by local Maasai people, may be under threat - from avocados.

The walk was flagged off by H E the High Commissioner of Kenya in London Lazarus Amayo at the Natural History Museum in the Borough of Kensington & Chelsea London on Sunday the 3rd of December with overnight stopovers in Windsor, Reading, Newbury, Swindon, Cirencester, Cheltenham, Gloucester (no overnight stopover), Stroud, Chippenham, Bath, and a brief stop in Yate and to finished at Cenotaph, Bristol City Centre on Tuesday, December 12th.

Kenyan agricultural company KiliAvo Fresh Ltd, which has farms near Amboseli on nearly 175 acres of land, is building nurseries and preparing to grow the fruit, whose popularity is growing worldwide due to its high nutritional value.

The Walk raised awareness of the plight of the African Elephant at every opportunity in different towns from Windsor to Bath. The Kenya team was later honoured at the Glittering Gala Award Evening at the Bristol Marriott Hotel.

Conservationists are aghast.

The rationale behind this walk is to raise awareness of the plight of African elephants and hope the United Kingdom stops the illegal domestic ivory market and join other nations to support the African Elephants Action Plan.

They say the plans and an electric fence on the farm will block the crucial Kimana Wildlife Corridor where elephants move between Amboseli, the Tsavo and Chyulu Hills parks, and strangle one of the region’s most beloved and important safari parks. In a dispute illustrating the global tussle for shrinking resources from Africa to the Amazon, KiliAvo said it obtained the land legally then received government approval in mid-2020 to begin work after presenting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). “Local people here all know the project and they are happy because it’s another source of employment and of making their land have value,” KiliAvo shareholder and farm manager Jeremiah Salaash told Reuters. However, the National Environment Management Agency ordered work halted last September and said it wanted to revoke the EIA. KiliAvo has challenged that in Kenya’s environmental tribunal, where the case is pending, according to CM Advocates LLP, the law firm representing them.

Global Climate Strike Artists against the climate crisis

On March 19, the world came together for the next Global Climate Strike. This was the 5th strike organized by the Fridays for Future movement, which was set in motion by student Greta Thunberg in 2019 as a way to put pressure on governments to make change. With public events prohibited in most places, artists from around the world designed a poster that shares the key message they like to communicate if they were able to march and protest. They did and they’re yours to keep. Whether you want to proudly hang one in your window or post it on your social feed, ask us for a link to download the one that speaks to you and join the fight.

Because there’s no planet B. It is accepted by the vast majority of scientists that the greenhouse effect which warms Earth is much increased by emission of vast amounts of carbon dioxide and some other gases by human activities. In the historical past the greenhouse effect, driven by volcanic and microbial carbon dioxide emission, prevented the earth from being permanently encased in ice, but since humanity industrialised, atmospheric carbon dioxide has increased and is causing ever more harmful global warming and climate change. The only processes that take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere (once takeup by acidifying the oceans is saturated) are geological—locking up of carbon by weathering and formation of rocks as carbonates and other compounds, on a timescale of hundreds of thousands of years and botanical, uptake of carbon by vegetation, locking it up unless the vegetation burns or rots without being replaced, on a timescale of, at best, centuries. Adults in positions of authority, in the form of fossil fuel corporations and global governments, are seen as being responsible for large carbon dioxide emissions, and doing far too little to reduce them. A 2019 statement by over 12,000 scientists says that “Young people’s concerns are justified and supported by the best available science”.

Karabo Poppy Karabo’s bold creative style is unmissable, and she first developed it by focusing on her immediate surroundings in South Africa. “I was inspired to create a poster specifically addressing the effect of Global Warming on the African continent. There are photographs that show how the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya has rapidly deteriorated and melted. I felt this sudden urge to embrace the Earth and almost reassure her that her cries don’t fall on deaf ears, that many are banding together to reverse this devastation, because there is no planet after this one.”

Aaniel Liévano Colombian illustrator Daniel Liévano plays with reality in his cleverly abstract works. “The thing I like about using abstraction is that you can appreciate the composition as a whole in no time, all at once, without compromising the message. Just using color itself you can transmit genuine emotions. Earth is passing through a degradation, literally, so I took that as something I could mirror with a simple concept. I hope it’ll remind us to take action.”

The Walid Bukhari Walid Bukhari is a US-based typography wizard who cleverly weaves his messages into images. “Climate change often feels distant when large-scale changes aren’t happening in your immediate area, so my intention was to highlight the fact that something as familiar as the weather you follow every day is a direct consequence of climate change.”

Yeji Yun Seoul-based illustrator Yeji Yun’s playful work, you’ll often find people and animals living in perfect harmony. “I wanted to emphasize the message that there is no time to wait and see how things turn out. We are the last generation with a real opportunity to save the world, and we have to act right from this moment.”

Anisa Makhoul American artist Anisa Makhoul’s work centers on the beauty of the everyday world around her. “A few years ago, the glass factory across the street from my son’s preschool was found to have bypassed the air filters they were supposed to put on their chimney. A huge amount of lead was found in the air around the factory, and even in my son’s playground. Looking back, my son and I couldn’t remember a time when we had felt so generally unwell. The glass company only fixed the problem because they got caught. Factories are our biggest polluters, and we need more innovative ways of doing things so we can all be healthy.”

Stefan Marx Stefan is a German artist who tells his stories with simple, sparse lines. An artist, a skateboarder, and a cultural philosopher. He published artist’s books through his own publishing company, designs record covers for various labels, and exhibits his works at art book fairs and galleries. “The world is sweating. It’s too hot. I wanted to draw this simple fact in a simple way.”

People & Places Currency

From Malindi to Mozambique

It is speculated that cowrie shells may have been the principal currency at Gedi. Cowrie shells have been recovered in the store rooms of the houses and found in greater abundance than struck coins, represented by only two coins of Chinese origin. The use of cowries as currency is supported by their historical use as tender in various parts of Africa, and Kirkman estimated the exchange rate of cowrie shells to the gold dinar to be 400,000 to 1.

East Africas Great Mystery The Gedi Ruins are one of Kenya and East Africa’s great mysteries. Gedi is one of many medieval Swahili coastal settlements that stretch from Mogadishu, Somalia to the Zambezi River in Mozambique. There are 116 known Swahili sites stretching from southern Somalia to Vumba Kuu at the Kenya-Tanzania border. Since the rediscovery of the Gedi ruins by colonialists in the 1920s, Gedi has been one of the most intensely excavated and studied of those sites, along with Shanga, Manda, Ungwana, Kilwa, and the Comoros.

As it lies 2 miles outside Watamu on the Malindi to Mombasa road on the Kenya Coast it was close to other settlements, yet no references have been found to date. Pottery was found from all over the world suggesting a centre of trade and therefore the obscurity of Gede in records is even more intriguing. The site of Gedi includes a walled town and its outlying area. All of the standing buildings at Gedi, which include mosques, a palace, and numerous houses, are made from stone, are one-story, and are distributed unevenly in the town.

The puzzle surrounding this abandoned town adds to its haunting beauty that captivates and frightens locals and tourists alike to this day. It is thought that the town was founded in the early 13th Century due to finds like a Ming China vase and Venetian glass. Gedi was then mysteriously abandoned in the late 17th Century.

There are also large open areas in the settlement which contained earth and thatch houses. Stone “pillar tombs” are a distinctive type of Swahili Coast architecture found at Gedi as well. Kenya has since the early sixties been a popular tourist destination for Europe, though with the effect of Corona most of the resorts and hotels have not been fully operation as a result of the international travel ban.

One reason that this may have occurred is due to tribes from the north migrating down into the forest where Gedi lies and forcing the inhabitants out. However the main puzzle is that there are no records of the town in Portuguese, Arabic or Swahili scripts.

As travel restrictions ease a Kenya Safari would be a lifetime experience and if you do book one do not forget to include the GEDI Ruins in your places to visit.

There are several classifications of beads common to the Swahili coastal settlements that have been found at Gedi. In his examination of beads found at Gedi and the Limpopo Valley (Mapungubwe), Schofield placed beads into three categories: red, blue, green, and yellow cylinders made from cane glass; smaller black, red, green, yellow, and blue biconical and lenticular beads made from wound glass; and spheres of red, black, and yellow pressed glass.

Pottery Numerous types and styles of ceramics have been found during the excavations at Gedi including Chinese porcelain, Islamic glazed ware, and locally produced earthenwares. Several examples of the ceramics recovered at Gedi are represented in different quantities at other coastal sites.

ST MARKS ROAD so special?

The Big Question for many living outside the vicinity. Easton is the heart of the Bristol ethnic community and St Marks Road is at the centre of its activities with events from food festivals, Eid parties, product launches, ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy festival and recently the Grand Iftar, the road has everything for this vibrant community. Recent proposals to pedestrianise this most iconic streets , were faced with a lot of resistance from both the community and local businesses in the area. Bristol Sweet Mart estabilished in 1978 and Pak Butchers who have been operating since 1995 have both said they would move if a controversial Bristol City Council plan went ahead. The beginnings of this road date back to the early 1900s, The Mountstevens first shop opened in St Marks Road, Easton 1911. Mountstevens was founded by Bristol couple Ada and Henry Mountstevens; the business remained in the family for 86 years before being sold on. A familiar name to many in recent years is Sue Mountstevens the first elected Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner. Earlier in her career she ran the Mountstevens Bakeries chain.

Bristol Sweetmart has been at the centre of this road, estabilished by Ugandan refugee Ismail Majothi and his wife Kulsum as a small Duka (shop) selling homemade Indian food and sweets, and supported by his family Bristol Sweetmart is a perfect model of what hard work, resilience and commitment brings. Today it’s the gem and a powerhouse in the sense it’s what brings communities from far and wide to shop on St Marks Road. Pak Butchers opened on St Marks road some 20 years after Bristol Sweetmart and some 10 years after Bhogals chemist, the Big 3 on the road. Pak was the brainchild of a young entrepreneur Abdul Raoof Malik, later becoming the first Muslim councillor in the area and currently the chair of another landmark on this street Easton Jamia Masjid that opened its doors for prayers in 1983 and in recent years it has been refurbished. Bhogals Dispensing Chemist another landmark on this road. Bhogals Chemist is a family run business, founded by Satwinder and Baldev Bhogal was opened on the 6th of July 1987, from a vision that healthcare was a service that should remain personal and within a community, the Bhogals found a space

In the not so recent years came Thali, first only a food truck at Glastonbury Festival, which has estabilished itself as an award winning restaurant, serving delicious, healthy Indian food from a mainly vegetarian menu, embracing the spirit of India; sustainable outlook, and food

Directly opposite Easton Jamia is the St Marks Road Baptist Church, a multi-cultural, multi-generational Christian community whose open door approach and diversity is to promote community cohesion. Led by Pastor Richard and a group of dedicated volunteers, the church serves as a community hub, a food bank and a community café. Just as you come up the hill, onto St Marks Road, there is the famous Clippers Barbers, a centrepoint for meeting, and a must visit for that cut above the rest.

There was the Maitreya Bristol, La Casbah and a betting shop that are now no more. This cocktail of small businesses, a pub, a mosque, a Salvation Army centre and a church make up this iconic street. Also based on this road is Vantage Pharmacy, East Bristol Bakery an award winning small open plan bakery in the heart of Easton and Hunters Estate Agents and Letting Agents Easton. Our first publication of Mast The magazine in 2009 was superbly supported by a core of businesses from this street, which is like no other.

So why the interest from us as a publication? We have been there for this community as these have been there for us and our associate media, Radio Ramadhan Bristol in 2005, Radio Mast FM in 2008 and since 2012 MTM Awards.

So what makes this road unique?

This road is a uniquely ethnic and eclectic community, a community and ethnic businesses centre, that make this street one of the finest in Bristol, not only a shopping boulevard St Marks road is the centre of ethnic networking, where communities meet, mingle, share and shop safe and easy. We pray it lives on and pray that the iconic businesses do thrive on and that one day it will be listed as Europe’s Icon!

What difference have you brought to the communities you serve?

Growing Futures UK was set up to work with disadvantaged young people and started with our community gardens, teaching young people to grow veg, cook, use tools and enjoy the great outdoors. Directly after the Grenfell tragedy I coordinated Bristol’s response, sending 4 trucks of goods to the victims and bringing 2 coach loads of young people from Grenfell’s footprint for a day out in Weston Super mare. I have over the years championed BME rights across all areas of life within the south west and nationally, as one of the Architects of the Violence Reduction Unit in Bristol, most of my weekends are spent with victims and families of effected by serious youth violence in A&E. In these moments of crisis, I am able to intervene in what for many is a circle of violence offering support and a way out, as well as diverting younger siblings away from exploitation and crime. I have also been privileged to have run workshops for all officers within A&S constabulary and student offices on the Impact of stop on search on Black Communities as well as running workshops for young people on Stop & Search.

strengths?

I believe my strengths are consistency, doggedness and adaptively

What are your objectives over the next one to three years? To Complete the A&S Clammy report which is due to be published May 21. Build Growing Futures UK C.I.C ability to influence and offer opportunities to Bristol’s children, especially those at risk of child criminal exploitation, exclusion and those from disadvantaged back grounds. Oh and have a holiday.

Senegalese Fish and Rice For the Fish and Stuffing: • • • • • •

Thieboudienne

Thieboudienne literally translated means the rice of fish in the Wolof language in Senegal. The name hardly does the dish justice. Thieboudienne is considered to be the national dish of Senegal and for good reason, it is bursting with layers of excellent flavor. Just one of the reasons Senegalese cuisine is known around the world as delicious. By the way, you pronounce Thieboudienne like this (ceebu jen). Thieboudienne can be made with an assortment of different vegetables so you can easily use what you like or have on hand. Thieboudienne calls for a few unique ingredients. Smoked fish is one which adds great flavor (I bought mine at my local African store.) Another is a spice called netetou which is a fermented bean that is ground up. This spice has a strong unpleasant scent but completely changes into an umami flavoring when cooked. I highly recommend you try it and it is also used in many other Senegalese and West African dishes.

The puree or marinade that is made for the fish is exceptional, I will use it on all sorts of other things. You can use any type of white firm fish you like but grouper or snapper would be most authentic. Additionally you can use the whole fish or just fillets which is what I ended up using. If using the whole fish you stuff the puree into slits or if using fillets you can marinade them in the puree, just plan some extra time for that. It should refrigerate for a couple of hours to absorb the delicious flavor.

They also use broken rice to make this dish. Typically, it is cheaper to purchase as it is not the pristine jasmine or basmati whole grains. Just remember when making this amazing, flavorful dish, that it is totally adaptable. Use the vegetables you like and eliminate what you don’t. I do hope that you will make it and let me know how much you loved it. It should be served and eaten on a large communal platter. Be sure to take a photo and tag me.

1⁄4 cup finely chopped parsley 2 tsp. crushed red chile flakes 6 cloves garlic, minced 2 scallions, minced 1⁄4 small yellow onion, minced Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 8 (4–oz.) filets grouper or red snapper For the Thiéboudienne 1⁄2 cup canola or palm oil 2 medium yellow onions, roughly chopped 1 medium green bell pepper, stemmed, seeded, and roughly chopped 1 (12–oz.) can tomato paste 6 cups fish or vegetable stock 6 small carrots, halved crosswise 1 large eggplant, cut into large chunks, or 4 small Thai eggplants 1 medium turnip, peeled and cut into 12 wedges 1⁄2 cassava root, peeled and cut into 1 1/2” chunks 1⁄3 cup dried white hibiscus flowers (optional; see below for ordering) 2 tbsp. tamarind paste 2 tbsp. fish sauce 4 cups basmati rice Lime wedges, to serve

Instructions: Make the fish and stuffing: Mix together parsley, chile flakes, garlic, scallion, onion, and salt and pepper in a bowl. Using a paring knife, cut a 2” slit lengthwise in each fish filet; stuff fillets with the herb mixture, and set aside. Make the thiéboudienne: Heat oil in an 8–qt. Dutch oven over medium heat. Add onions and green pepper, and cook, stirring, until softened, about 10 minutes. Add tomato paste; cook, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are very soft and paste is lightly browned, about 10 minutes. Add stock, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, and add filets: cook until fish is just cooked through, about 18 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove filets and transfer to a plate, then cover to keep warm. Add carrots, eggplants, turnips, and cassava, and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 40 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer vegetables to a bowl; keep warm. Add hibiscus flowers (if using), tamarind paste, and fish sauce, and cook, stirring occasionally, until hibiscus flowers soften, about 5 minutes. Add rice, and stir to combine: reduce heat to low, and cook, covered, until rice is tender, about 45 minutes. Remove from heat, and fluff rice with a fork. To serve, divide fish, vegetables, and rice among serving plates: serve with lime wedges (for squeezing over fish).

Senegalese Boubou

The boubou is the classic Senegalese robe, worn by both men and women all over West Africa and in West African diasporic communities of Europe and the United States. Sewn from a single piece of fabric, the boubou is usually 59 inches (150 cm) wide and of varying lengths.

The most elegant style, the grand boubou, usually employs a piece of fabric 117 inches (300 cm) long and reaches to the ankles. Traditionally, custom-made in workshops by tailors, the boubou is made by folding the fabric in half, fashioning a neck opening, and sewing the sides halfway up to make flowing sleeves. For women the neck is large and rounded; for men it forms a long V-shape, usually with a large five-sided pocket cutting off the tip of the "V."

When stiffly starched and draped over the body, the boubou creates for its wearer the appearance of a stately, elegant carriage with majestic height and presence. Men wear the classic boubou with a matching shirt and trousers underneath. Women wear it with a matching wrapper or pagne and head-tie.

Fabric, Embroidery and Dyeing of the Boubou Tailors who specialize in making boubous invest their skills in the art of embroidery. The fabric for these embroidered boubous is cotton damask, called basin in the francophone West African countries. Although the fabric can be bought in colors, connoisseurs prefer to buy white cloth and have it hand dyed in rich hues by women dyers working out of their homes. Available in market stalls in several grades of quality, the damask at its most expensive comes from Europe, while cheaper imitations come from Asia or Nigeria.

Fashionista African Prints

AWARDS

Nominated for a MTM Hair Beauty & Fashionista Award 201

With Big Q African fashion changes every few months. African fashion designs used to be long flowing dresses but that has changed. We have pants, short skirts, short dresses, body suits and so much more. East African Fashion trends showcase several different fashion designs and accessories such as earrings necklaces, bangles, shoes, bags and more. Fashion in the East African region has always been dictated by two very colourful fabrics, Kitenge and Khanga. Many born in the Diaspora seem to confuse these two moreover also terming the Kikoi a Kitenge. Over the years these fabrics have played a great role in dressing for the African woman from these regions and have now stabilised these on the world market through fashion shows like the New York African Fashion show. Let us start with the Khanga; this is a colourful fabric similar to Kitenge worn mainly by women as a two piece wrap around or a stitched outfit. Its light and a preferred fabric in the tropics. Men also use Khanga as a sarong (a typical way of Swahili men dress code after work). A Khanga is a printed piece of cotton fabric normally 1.5mx1m with bordering along all four sides called ‘pindo’ in Swahili and a central part called ‘mji’ in Swahili, this differs on different designs. Khanga are also referred to as Leso in Mombasa on the Kenya coast, often these prints have poetic slogans and are treasured amongst the Swahili and Bajun of Kenya whose women have a collection of Khanga. Like a new vinyl or CD released, womenfolk in these parts book in advance for every new release. The Kitenge is slightly a thicker material and very popular in Tanzania, It is said that the Kitenge originated from Tanzania. It is worn similarly like the Khanga but the Kitenge have over the years evolved and are now the preferred wears at ceremonies and weddings. Unlike the Khanga these run in long rolls and depending on its usage it is cut. The original Kitenge was a straight forward print on a plain background popularised in the 60’s as a must wear for Tanzanians popularised by the then President of Tanzania mwalimu Julius Nyerere. It is often worn as a wrap around similar to a sarong by women with a matching headscarf and at times used as a baby sling. It has multiple prints which is printed on the cloth by traditional Batik, and as in the case of Khanga, most of its designs have a message, political, religious or romantic. Today the Kitenge has walked many a cat walk around the world and is used to produce clutch bags & hand bags, designer shoes and normal pumps. These traditional East African clothes have now been accepted in the international fashion world with celebrities such as Beyonce donning Kitenge outfits.

E NTERTAINMENT Sauti Sol

Moodz Parichay drops his long-awaited album and what an album it is! 'Moodz' is a 10 track monster album that delivers on every level and for every mood and it's an amazing culmination of Parichay’s musical career spanning several years and music styles. From soulful tracks, desi hip-hop and Latin flavours to an EDM anthem and even a Bollywood item song!

The first debut studio album release from Sauti Sol was “Mwanzo” in 2008, which received a positive response from fellow Kenyans. Three years later, the award winning afro pop group released “Sol Filosofia” as their second studio album, which won them several accolades and nominations.

On 7 February 2020, Sauti Sol released the single, “Suzanna”, which talks about the controversial anomaly of women being sponsored by older men in return for romantic favors. “Suzanna” is the band’s first single under their new record deal with Universal Music Group.
