FACE TO FACE:
SYED EJAZ SHAH I HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO SIT WITH SYED SHAH IN EASTON JAMIA MASJID TO TALK ABOUT HIS JOURNEY SO FAR. J:Syed Shah, thank you for giving us an opportunity to talk to you, when did you first come to the UK? SS: Hi Junior, thank you for taking time to talk to me. I first came over to the UK in 1964. My first visit was to High Wycombe in 1971 J: When you first moved to Bristol, what was it like for a young Muslim? SS: At that time we faced a few challenges. but generally the people were open minded. Bristol was so small back then, there was no M32, no M4 but in the mid 70’s the city started to develop. I experienced what I felt was racism; it was hard to get work. The only jobs for us were the hard ones that no one else wanted, but I managed to get a job in Newman Electric Motor Industries in Yate. J: What was it like working in the factories then? SS: It was hard work, we worked a 12hr night shift but I never complained. It was good to work though very tough but I was young and strong and ready for the challenge. J: Which was the first Mosque in Bristol? SS: Our own Easton Jamia in 1984. It was small; there were just two rooms until the late 80’s when we started to expand. At this time all the Muslims used to come here to pray regardless of where they were from. From 1985 I have been fully involved in Easton Masjid. I love the years here and have held various positions including being four times elected chair of the Masjid. The early years were a really nice time to be involved, we all worked so well together the committee was very co-operative. J: What has changed? It is still good, we still work together but nothing beats that first feeling when we were starting out. I feel we can do more together and I also feel we need to get the youth much more involved. In 1990, people started to ask for my help with Muslim funerals. So I tried to establish a funeral committee which has now been going for 35 years. I’m still the head of Avon Muslim Funeral committee
and very happy in what we do to serve the community. Back then there was no real service for a proper Muslim funeral. We helped to arrange and undertake the funerals as a group. In the early day we would help with the costs and be involved with helping the families, nowadays things are more expensive so we do ask for some payment but we are still here to help as much as we can. J: When do you feel Bristol stared to become more diverse? SS: I would say in the mid 1980’s, more diverse communities started to come here. I remember in the 70’s seeing signs saying “no blacks, no dogs” and a thing like that but even then Bristol was friendlier than other places. Things have
SS: The space is beautiful, it looks beautiful. We can now accommodate 1200, it is great, remember we started with just two small rooms! We are integrated with our community. We love our neighbours and they show us all the time they love us. This Mosque is very important to me. I’m a happy man, I’m proud of my community and my family. My children are all well-educated, my eldest son is a councillor, and all my other children are successful in their own right. I want to thank you and Mast for taking time to talk to me. You have been doing a great job in the community for many years.
moved on, things have changed. My main happiness was my family and being involved in the mosque. In the late 90’s the Muslim population stared to get bigger. First we had Totterdown Mosque, a small space in St Pauls, and in Easton. Now we have over 20 mosques in Bristol. As long as we all work together there is no problem with this. We all need to look at helping educate our youth, strength out communities, and take care of our elderly. We need to tackle terrorism, this is our country, and we should be ambassadors of peace for Islam here. J: Looking around us now, as we sit here in Easton Jamia, how do you feel about the redevelopment of the Mosque?
J: Finally what message would you leave us with? SS: My message is for the younger generation. Be a good Muslim, get educated, look after yourself and your parents, and most importantly stay away from those who are trying to take you in the wrong direction.

Ashley Community Housing (ACH) was established in Bristol in 2008 as a social enterprise specialising in the resettlement and integration of refugees. In this time they have successfully resettled 2500 individuals from refugee backgrounds and are now one of the UK’s leading providers of refugee resettlement and integration services, working across the West of England and the West Midlands.
Celebrating 10 years! Ashley Community Housing provide safe, secure and comfortable housing combined with culturally sensitive support and employability skills training. ACH focus on refugees’ futures, seeing them as people with skills, desires and ambitions. They don’t focus on the story of how they came to be here, they focus on where they want to be. Their #rethinkingrefugee campaign has been running since 2015. It was born as a reaction to the negative portrayal of refugees in the media, and aims to redefine the narrative to the more positive message that refugees are assets to employers and local communities. Himilo is their training arm. It runs short, vocational training courses aimed at increasing skills and job prospects, delivering accredited and non-accredited training provision, careers advice and guidance to the local community.
Vocational ESOL provision Himilo continues to develop and implement courses for students to learn English in innovative ways that really matters to them. They also support learners through entry and higher level courses in Employability and Independent Living, and deliver courses ranging from Introduction to Care, Retail and Hospitality through to IT, Interview Skills, and Health and Social Care. Their approach is to support learners in building confidence in personal and professional development, and courses which lead to genuine career opportunities, via partnerships with local and national employers.
Looking for Employers Himilo is looking to build partnerships with more employers. They can provide candidates and training for business with a staff or skills shortage and can run specific courses to meet the needs of employers. This includes delivering training in Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, and Personal Safety, and providing work placements with mentoring and a structured learning review. This is a great option to "try before you buy" for both parties. Contact himilo@ashleyhousing.com for more info.
Careers Advice and candidate pre-selection The Himilo Careers Advice team offer free careers advice to refugees and the wider community. They can help with CV writing, job search support, interview support, psychometric testing, finding the right courses for the customer and support in accessing the Local Labour Market. Their advisers are extremely knowledgeable of the local area and can signpost onto relevant provision, but also help the customer move into employment. If you are a local charity or organization with clients in need of assistance, Himilo can offer free advice and guidance, in a face-to-face or group work setting. And if your business has recruitment needs, Himilo can help you fill your vacancies.

Winner National Award for Excellence and Achievement 2017
PROFILE: SIKH UNION COVENTRY On the 10th of March our Founder was invited to make a presentation of the MTM National Award For Excellence & Achievement to 2017 winners Sikh Union Coventry. The event was graced by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Coventry amongst many guests and dignitaries.
About Sikh Union Coventry
The organisation was formed for the love of hockey which has been a very popular sport among Indian people for many years. This trend continued with Sikhs who had immigrated to East Africa in the early 1900’s, to build the Kenya-Uganda railway. The migrants continued with their popular sport hockey with several clubs playing in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to a high level. There was a Sikh Union Club in different East African towns, where sport and social gatherings brought these communities together. The sixties and seventies saw the arrival into Britain of many Asian immigrants from East Africa, and with many of them keen hockey players, they wanted to continue playing. A group of them, mainly Sikhs, started training together on a regular basis at Morris Park in Stoke Heath, Coventry. Thus “Sikh Union Hockey Club Coventry” was formed around 1970. As costs escalated over the years and in order to remain selfsufficient, the club embarked on various fund raising activities to enable the hockey club to survive. As fund raising activities increased, the club started contributing towards needy local causes and today Sikh Union Coventry are at the forefront of helping to develop resources for the youth in Coventry and beyond. Cultural, sports and social events are organised in order to provide a platform for the youth to integrate into the community.
• • • • •
Aims and objectives
To develop and provide educational and recreational resources for the Sikh youth. To organise events and facilities catering for Sikh cultural, sports and social needs. To develop partnerships with other communities. To strengthen and promote the moral, spiritual and cultural values of the Sikh community. To provide a platform for the Sikh youth to integrate amongst themselves and others.
In June 2016, Sikh Union Coventry was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This award is the highest honour given to volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work in their communities and is equivalent in status to an MBE. The Award was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and winners are announced each year on 2nd June; the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation. Members of the Committee were invited to Buckingham Palace to meet members of the Royal Family, and this was followed by a formal presentation of the commemorative crystal and certificate on 6th August at the clubs headquarters at Daimler Green Community Centre. In 2020 Sikh Union Coventry celebrates their Golden Jubilee and events have been lined up beginning 2019.
Bristol Chinese Women’s Group BACWG was formed in 1989, to support Chinese women who had nowhere else to go for support, either due to language and/or cultural barriers. What was initially meant to be a three month project, turned into an almost 29 year campaign to increase equality and become a voice for the Chinese community in Bristol and around the UK as a whole. In that time, the Group has grown from a “one-womanband” into an operation that employs nine office staff, nine community based workers and volunteers supporting our work from as far as Truro. The major projects that we currently run include: • Chinese Lantern Project – offers a free confidential telephone helpline to the Chinese community in the South West region. It aims to identify isolated and hidden members of the Chinese community and empower them to better integrate into wider society. • Oriental Bridge Project – provides more in-depth face-toface support for the Chinese community specifically in Bristol – including advice, information, advocacy, interpreting, representation, referrals and signposting. In addition it can provide emotional support and counselling services if necessary. • Care Support Service – supports Chinese elders, carers and/or their families, who are ill, frail, disabled or mentally ill or old and require support to stay in their own home and remain independent. The service provides one-to-one tailored practical social and leisure support to a person from the Chinese community in and/or outside their home. • Food & Nutrition Project – following the success of our multicultural cookery classes and the 91 Ways community events, the two organisations will work together with other partners to deliver a project across Bristol, to provide shared cooking experiences and nutritional skills to older people to improve health and wellbeing whilst reducing isolation.
CHINESE NEW YEAR 2018 Chinese New Year celebrations
In addition to these, we also run and join in with different activities and events throughout the year to promote Chinese culture and integration. BACWG is currently going through a period of major upheaval and change, due in part to the challenging financial landscape that the country has faced since 2008, but also the changing nature of the Chinese community that has continued to grow since the earliest migrants came to the south west. As a consequence BACWG’s work has evolved to include support for both female and male service users; however, its name has been a holdover from its earliest days and now has been identified as an ideal time to change it to better represent the community that we now support. By September 2018, we expect to re-launch ourselves with a new name and mission statement and which would neatly coincide with our 29th Anniversary. For further information about our projects, activities or events, please contact us on 0808 8020012 (all calls are free and confidential – landline and mobile)

We welcomed the Chinese Year of the Dog with a bang, with traditional live firecrackers.
PROFILE: NAHEED IQBAL Naheed Iqbal was born in Lahore in the Punjab province of Pakistan. She completed her school and university education in Lahore having achieved a diploma in computer science and B-TEC in childcare.
I first met Naheed at a small salon, Sairaz on St. Mark’s road in 2005; at first instance I could see the enthusiasm of this young entrepreneur who wanted to put her name out there for the ethnic communities to enjoy the facilities of her newly set salon.
She is an award winning MTM hair & beauty specialist also awarded a certificate of credit for counselling skills, her work includes social work, beauty therapy, teaching, and being a researcher for humanitarian needs for a number of years.
Since there has been no stopping Naheed, she has expanded her Sairaz hair & Beauty Salon, and today boasts of an establishment not only on the Fishponds High Street but at the prestigious Galleries Mall arcade. She later expanded holding Fashion Weeks followed by Pakistan National Day celebrations. This was the beginning of Naheed spreading her wings onto the more strenuous Event and Wedding planning management.
Her first job was with Well Women a mental health group providing counselling for ethnic minorities through workshops and seminars. She is a good communicator and easily bonds with different communities that she has strived to bring together through her events and salon activities.
She has helped the development and evaluation for a number of my community organizations, this skill has proven very useful for her earning her the appointment of the deputy chair of the Overseas Pakistan Services organization.
“Health, educational and environmental issues are of particular interests to me as I enjoy working with Overseas Pakistan Solidarity and international human right commissions to assist in building their capacity and infrastructure.” At the same time my goal is in raising awareness of health, drug and educational issues, youth and women empowerment problems and also the physically impaired in Pakistan and Kashmir so we can bring some peace in the region of the sub-continent and beyond. She was appointed vice-chair of IHRC (International Human Rights Commission early this year because of her continued involvement with local communities and since she intends to support women and children in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and other third world countries creating breast cancer awareness in these deprived and needy countries.
“I am happily married with two children. I enjoy travelling, reading, writing and meeting new people, despite my busy lifestyle I still manage to maintain quality time with my family and I will always do my level best in working and helping people who are in need, my husband is my greatest supporter and I am so blessed to have him by my side and my two lovely children.”
You just have to keep trying to do good work and hope that it leads to something good. I want to look back on my career and be proud of the work I’ve done and be proud that at least I tried everything to make a difference, and yes also I’ll be able to look back and know that I was terrible at a variety of things but also that I was good at the majority of them!
FESTIVAL OF NOWROZ The Kurdish celebrated the auspicious day of Navroz Mubarak. The word Navroz means ‘new day’. It is the first day of the Persian year. This festival dates back for more than 3000 years and there are records of it being celebrated way back in 6th century BC.
The Bristol Kurdish community held their celebrations at the Malcolm X centre in St Pauls. Event organiser Essam put together a beautiful display of culture, and Kurdish food for the many that joined in with the celebration. Speaking to Mast, Essam hopes to expand the celebration further by holding a culture awareness day next year.

Swindon Hindu Temple &
Heritage Centre The centre has organised a number of events this half of the year. One of the events was the free kitchen, at Regent Circus where they served hot Indian vegetarian food to around 150 people. The temple celebrated its 2nd Anniversary on Sunday 20th May. This was a big landmark for the Temple as well as the entire community. There are more exciting events planned for the year! This has been a proud moment for the Hindu population in South West England. The temple organised a holi festival, in which close to 700 people took part earlier in the year Holi also referred to as the Festival of Colours is a popular Hindu Spring festival. It marks the end of the winter gloom and rejoices in the bloom of spring. Huge piles of magenta, pink, green and blue colours are displayed for sale in streets in
India. Buying these colours is bringing joy and colour to your home and life. During this time, chants of HOLI HAI….. reverberate across India, Nepal, Srilanka and countries with large Hindu Diaspora such as Guyana, Trinidad, East & South Africa, Mauritius Fiji and parts of United Kingdom and America where celebrations are contained at community centres and temples. Swindon Hindu Temple and community Centre is one of the fastest growing charity organisations in the country. It has established a cultural hub and centre of excellence to promote its social, community, cultural and charitable endeavours and create social innovation through community based enterprise that transcends communities and has a positive, long-term impact on the society and the region.
Congratulations on your second anniversary!
EMPOWERING & SUPPORTING YOUNG AND ADULT CARERS
BRISTOL BLACK CARERS Bristol Black Carers is a charity which addresses the needs of unpaid carers who have taken up the role and responsibilities to provide care and support for someone with a long-term condition/s. The charity’s goal is to empower and support carers both young and adult with their families/friends so that everyone is included to improve the journey of caring for another person. We focus on the Black and Minority Ethnic communities, but we are not exclusive of anyone needing help.
In 1995, Bristol Black Voluntary Sector Development Unit was awarded a grant from Bristol Social Services to fund a worker to develop a Black Carers Information & Development Service. It was identified that a service of this nature was required because of the concerns which arose from the Black communities highlighting their cultural aspects were not addressed in the delivery of services. This was a major factor that contributed to the carers in Black communities not accessing statutory and voluntary services. In June 1996, conference was organised in Bristol for Black Carers to discuss their needs and a report was published from this conference The charity was launched under the name “Black Carers Project” on
22nd October 1997. Trustees, staff and service users identified that we were no longer a project because we had crossed more that eleven years in existence and the name was officially changed in February 2010.
We are now challenged like most charities with sustainability and funding. The manager is the only employee at this time and we are hopeful that we will be able to acquire funding to make us self-sufficient, sustainable and develop the charity to offer services and employment to the community. We have come to realise that people are willing to help if they are guided to identify their skills so that they can help others.
Our pathway for our service users is to help them find ways to cope with different situations through the service we offer them. Our service users experience some barriers in accessing the relevant support and information from some statutory and voluntary organisations due to various reasons. This is the gap our charity fills by helping them to reach and engage with these services.

@BRISTOLBLACKCARERS
It is not fully recognised by those who deliver services that the carer’s role is paramount to the person who is suffering with any form of ill-health. They are the backbone to that person’s health improving or being managed efficiently. We need to stop prescribing to the service users and listen to what they are saying to improve their well-being and that of the person they are caring for.
We provide support, advocacy and assistance with some issues like housing, benefits, different types of applications e.g. carers’ breaks, carers’ assessments, etc. Support group meetings trips, events/activities are arranged to provide respite and education around the issues they must deal with in the role as a carer. We realise that the carers’ voices need to be heard because they are the ones providing a service that has a huge financial, physical and emotional impact on them and the cared-for. Testimonial: “I was introduced to Anndeloris and Bristol Black Carers when I was having some issues receiving support for my housing from the council. Being a carer for a parent who suffers with mental health I needed to be housed close to my parent so I can reach my parent quickly in a case of emergency. On top of this I am also a carer for my parent and provide care on a daily basis. Anndeloris was very compassionate and understanding of my situation and advised me of the correct steps to take when dealing with housing. Within a few months of advice and support from Bristol Black Carers I was finally housed within good distance of my parent. I was advised on my rights and this ended up being the factor in my case which prompted the council to act with a little more compassion to my situation. Just having someone to talk to who understood and then having them to walk me through the process of dealing with the council was much appreciated. I believe this service is vital and I would like to see more being done to support such organisations because Anndeloris and Bristol Black Carers are truly helping the community and changing lives for the better. I cannot thank them enough.” For this reason, the charity exists to support and empower the carer according to their needs. Every day we meet carers or their family members from the BME community who need help and guidance to respond to an issue which has direct impact on his/her life. We look forward to building the charity to assist as many carers and their family, with the knowledge that their life and those they care for will be improved with some joy and fulfilment.

IRVIN C AMPBEL L MTM AWARDS
SPECIAL RECOGNITION Irvin Campbell, an ex-user of SARI and a member of the Board of Trustees since 1998, has devoted himself to altruistic pursuits selflessly living his life in the service of others. As a Black Caribbean man he went through many challenges and adversities, including racism and discrimination but instead of giving in and accepting societal injustice he now stands up, defending the vulnerable who faces similar difficulties. He has an in depth understanding of racism and its implications. We have nominated this individual as his incredible contribution to the community has been largely overlooked, we now seek to give him a fraction of the recognition he deserves. Using sports as a major tool in his passion, Irvin has helped young people off the streets through mentoring, giving them a role model, structure and solidarity in their lives. Irvin drew upon his extensive sporting background as a football referee and as a former football coach and manager. Irvin channelled his experience in a most admirable way, by forming teams out of the people he has helped. This was an emphatic success and has led to three members playing for Bristol City FC. Continuing with the theme of sports Irvin was the first Olympic Wrestling Coach in the country to take Wrestling into the schools and make it into a nationwide programme, he made Downend School a centre of excellence for Olympic Wrestling and managed the largest female squad of women wrestlers outside of London. For three years he was the National coach and manager to the England Women Wrestling squad which travelled all over Europe competing, producing one European champion and three British champions. These achievements were done single handedly and with no recompense, Irvin did what he did without the expectation of reward. He never flaunts or boasts about his achievements, his humility, many agree is one of his most charismatic qualities and his open and down to earth character means he is well loved by his family, friends and the people who lives he was involved with . Irvin recalls that his participation, current and historically has provided him with considerable joy and fulfilment
An innately generous and modest man, Irvin went, and still goes above and beyond to provide opportunities to the most disenfranchised in our community, he does this despite working as a self-employed builder whilst maintaining his other responsibilities as a mentor, voluntary Board member for SARI and doting family man to his four grandchildren. Ever aware and proactive in his endeavours Irvin is still an active member in the community mentoring young children and representing SARI as an involved and deeply integrated member of our Board. All of this is a testament to Irvin’s continuous and seemingly endless ardour for his community and dedication to bring about palpable community amelioration within Bristol. To say this man is passionate for what he does is a gross understatement to his achievements, Irvin is a philanthropist and champion for what we strive to embody in the community. Irvin’s acknowledgement for his accomplishments is long overdue and he has done more than his part for making Bristol an all-round brighter and better place.

“The love of supporting the MTM awards for me is that, in this world there is too much intolerance, ignorance, division and hate. I hope that being an ambassador gives me the opportunity to talk to people and show them that with unity and love we can make this world a better place for all, no matter what religion you practice, the country your born in, your gender or the colour of your skin, we are all the same, we all want to be happy, safe and our children to grow in a world without judgment just because of who we are.” Joe Hawkins - MTM Ambassador

MTM Pearl Rita Fernandes AWARDS
“Growing up I’ve always been watching my family run successful business therefore it was always a goal that I one day would run my own business. Due to this desire, I completed my degree in business management and communications, during this time helped run the family hair and beauty salon. I managed to educate myself with beauty qualification as well as my make-up artistry. I am really passionate about the salon and especially make-up and would love to take this further and grow the business further.” - Pearl Rita Fernandes What is it like being a make-up artist? Being a make-up artist it is my job to make someone feel special and look their best through this I’ve bought many people happiness especially on their wedding days which bring me great joy. Furthermore, I have done charity work with an organisation that helps people who have cancer to know how they can apply make-up which helps them face the physical changed they might face for example how to draw on an eye brow. This has made a big difference with the people I worked which and bought them the confidence to try new things. My dad being a heart patient I’ve always tried to raise as much funds for British heart foundation, I’ve also volunteered in their stores as well as organising events for them to raise funds. What is your driving force? Since a young age I’ve always wanted to make my parents proud, this keeps me going each day in the trying to achieve my goals and being successful. I am also passionate about my work and love seeing people’s reactions and people appreciating my work this makes me want to continue working hard. What do you consider to be your key strengths? I am hard working and a motivated person, I am also very focused which help me not to lose track of my goals. What do you consider to be your weaknesses? Sometimes a can be shy which I think may hold me back with a certain opportunities. Based on your answers to the above, how would you like to be perceived? Successful make up artist / business woman What are your objectives over the next one to three years? Continue to grow as a business introducing new products/ treatments and hopefully start a beauty and make up training academy Why do you want to win awards? Who would you like your award wins to appeal to? I would love to win the award as a recognition of my work. Have you introduced or implemented any projects or events in the last 12 months? I’ve been part of a movie where I’ve done the hair and make up which was a great experience

People & Places God’s Own Country: Kerala Kerala, located on the Southwestern tip of India, enjoys unique geographical features that have made it one of the most soughtafter tourist destinations in Asia. Fondly referred to as ‘God’s Own Country’, Kerala was selected by the National Geographic Traveller as one of the 50 destinations of a lifetime and one of the thirteen paradises in the world. An equable climate, serene beaches, tranquil stretches of backwaters, lush hill stations and exotic wildlife are the major attractions of this land. A unique advantage of Kerala is that most of the destinations here are just two to four hour drive from the other. Classical art forms, colourful festivals, unique cuisine are some of the cultural marvels that await travellers. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine and Panchakarma, the rejuvenation therapy in Ayurveda have also helped Kerala to gain a pan-global reputation as a top of the line destination. And in Kerala, the season never ends, thanks to the year-long moderate climate and numerous festivals and events. One of the best preserved forest regions, teeming with rich wildlife, the Periyar Tiger Reserve, located in Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala State in South India is one of the 27 reserves in India meant for the conservation of the big cat - the Tiger. The tiger reserve is also home to a large number of butterfly species. Even though dedicated for the conservation tigers, the Periyar Tiger Reserve is noted for its good elephant population. These gentle giants can be seen roaming around in herds, especially at the lake fringes. Those who love the colour green better get ready for a mesmerizing experience at Periyar Tiger Reserve. The colour green and its many hues await you at Periyar. These programs are conducted by local people responsible for the surveillance of the vulnerable parts of the reserve.
The most interesting area in the backwaters is the Kuttanad region, called the rice bowl of Kerala. The area is probably the only place in the continent where farming is done below sea level, using a system of dykes and bunds..
Ayurveda originated in India more than 10,000 years ago and is believed to be the oldest healing science in existence, from which all other systems emerged. It deals elaborately with measures for healthful living during the entire span of life and its various phases. Besides, dealing with principles for maintenance of health, it has also developed a wide range of therapeutic measures to combat illness. These principles of positive health and therapeutic measures relate to physical, mental, social and spiritual welfare of human beings. Kerala’s backwaters is the most popular tourist attraction of Kerala. The palm-fringed, tranquil backwaters were once just the state’s trade highways. Kerala is her backwaters and lakes. They have dictated her history, shaped her present and promise a future by virtue of offering incomparable beauty and unique experiences. The state’s palm-fringed backwaters are inland lakes connected by a network of canals. With 41 west-flowing rivers, the backwaters stretch to almost 1,900 kilometers. The backwater routes date back over the centuries and have been long used for all transportation needs, in particular trade in coconut, rubber, rice and spices. Today, these waterways link remote villages and islands to the mainland and nerve centers of the coastal area. Alappuzha is one of the major centers for backwater boat trips. The intricate network of canals through this town has earned it the sobriquet “The Venice of the East”. Small but long country boats are the taxies of the water. The coir workers present an interesting sight as they soak coconut fiber in pools, beat them and wind the strands on long spindles stretched between an endless lines of coconut trees.

Nepalese Community Nuneaton Photography By Vinod Shresthas
Nepalese months have minimum of 28 (usually Mangshir/ Poush) days and maximum of 32 (usually Asar/ Shrawan) days.
Nepalese Community Nuneaton celebrated the Nepali New Year 2075 on Saturday 21st April at Chilvers Cotton Club. Nepali Calendar follows the Bikram sambat system which uses lunar months and solar sidereal year and is also called Nepali patro.
The nepalese new year falls on 1st Baishakh (mid of April). Nepali calendar is approximately 56 years and 8½ months ahead of the Gregorian calendar (A.D). There are 12 months, but unlike the international calendar, it has varied dates on every month, as they are not predetermined.
With its ancient culture and the Himalayas as a backdrop, landlocked Nepal was closed to the outside world until the 1950s. Since then the country has seen the creation of a multi-party parliamentary system, a decade-long Maoist insurgency and the abolition of its monarchy. Flanked by China and India, it is home to eight of the world’s highest mountains including Mount Everest, known locally as Sagarmatha

Born and bred in SE London, Bellas has captured the attention of legendary music producer Rishi Rich, to create a fabulous remix of her debut single ‘Starship’, taken from her debut album which drops in 2018. Danielle is a soulful, authentic artist with a bias towards Motown-tinged R&B/Pop, who knows what she wants. The single is the first offering from an exciting debut album, cowritten and produced by UK-based production duo Jud Mahoney and Natalie DeLucia, who have worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Brandy and Britney Spears.
2018 marks a welcome return for one of the UK’s favourite female artists. The stunning and very talented Alyssia shot to fame with a host of hits in the noughties and now she’s back with a brand new album ‘Heart Beatz’. The first track from the long-awaited album is ‘Kyun Mera’ which sees Alyssia return in great form, showcasing her stunning vocals and combining beautiful lyrics with a catchy melody. “This album has been a true labour of love and a very exciting journey of discovery for me. Writing lyrics and composing music has been such a great experience and I loved every minute of it. Fans of the original Alyssia will not be disappointed – I have stayed true to my roots with a lot of the tracks, but I also wanted to experiment and reach out to fans of other genres of music. I hope they enjoy listening to the album as much as I enjoyed creating it.”

Cinema-goers took to social media after the film was released with many claiming it to be the best Punjabi film they had ever watched and a must-see film for not just the Asian communities in the UK but the wider market too. Sajjan Singh Rangroot starring Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, released nationwide on 23rd March and is inspired by the true story of the Lahore Regiment of the British Indian Army. Turkish Delight Each of seven Turkey regions has its own clothing traditions and features Turkey is a country with old clothing traditions. Their roots are in the Ottoman Empire which has formed Turkish cultural and traditional heritage pretty much. Even hundreds of years after the Ottoman Empire, Turkish national costume has a lot of features typical for those days. The traditional style of Turkish clothing is mostly casual attire made with cotton and wool fabrics. Most of the clothing is functional and comfortable. Traditionally, men and women often wore similar clothing. Since men and women both travelled frequently on horseback, they required comfortable and flexible attire. In traditional Islamic societies, women dress very modestly in public, and wear more revealing clothing only in family quarters among close relatives. Until recently, the major fashion in Turkey was for European and American-style “secular” clothing in public—uncovered heads, forearms and calves in warm weather—though most older and some younger Turkish women continued to adopt the conservative tesettür style in public: headscarf and long, light cover-all topcoat covering arms and legs completely, even in summer. During the last 10 or 15 years, the trend has been to more conservative clothing, whether European or Islamic. Indeed, Turkish female society now seems divided into those who wear modest European-style secular clothing and those who wear tesettür. In rural areas away from the tourist throngs, Turks will accept you as you are, but women in more modest dress (sleeved tops, slacks or knee-length dresses or skirts) may be seen as worthier of respect. Thanks to its numerous fashion boutique districts and high-profile events such as Istanbul Fashion Week and Istanbul Design Week, Istanbul is an incredible destination for any fashion lover. With an ever-growing interest in Turkish fashion, Turkish designers are reaching new global audiences. One of the typical features of Turkish clothing is the usage of many layers. Very often people wear trousers, a long robe and a jacket on top. Women usually wear several scarves or kerchiefs of different colours. Flamboyance is another typical thing for Turkey. The traditional attire is always colourful, bright and striking. One of the most amazing pieces of Turkish clothing is socks. They are handmade and very bright. A lot of different patterns are used. The yarn used for knitting is colourful, natural and warm. There are 7 geographical regions of Turkey: Aegean, Black Sea, Central Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia, Marmara, Mediterranean and South-eastern Anatolia. Each one of them has its own clothing traditions and features of national costume. Traditional attire of various regions differs one from another much.
We will in future editions talk in detail about the variety as per district.

Turkish Eating One can find a great variety of mouth-watering dishes in Turkish cuisine, which is mostly the heritage of Ottoman cuisine. It is the mixture and refinement of Central Asian, Middle Eastern and Balkan cuisines Vegetable or Zeytin Yağlı Dishes Turks have a big diversity of vegetables and of course this reflects on the dishes. If a dish is cooked without any kind of meat then it is called zeytin yağlı— meaning cooked with olive oil. These kind of vegetable dishes are mostly served cold. Here are three good examples of zeytin yağlı dishes: • Yaprak Sarma — Wrapped vine leaves with a filling of rice, onion and spices like mint, currant, pepper and cinnamon. • Dolma — Vegetables either fresh or dried eggplants, peppers, tomatoes or zucchinis are stuffed with a mixture of rice and onion with various spices. • Taze Fasulye — Green beans cooked with tomato and/or tomato paste and of course onion.
Turkish Dishes with Meat • Karnıyarık — Fried eggplants with a minced meat, onion, parsley, garlic and tomato filling. This dish is a must. To make sure that what you get is a good one, check the eggplants. The dark colour of the peel should not smudge on the peeled parts and the meat should not look too dark or dry. • Lahmacun — a pizza like dish with a topping of finely minced meat and onions with spices on flaky thin dough. It is served with tomatoes; lettuce, parsley or rocket and most people prefer to squeeze lemon on it and roll to eat easier like tacos. • Kurufasulye — Beans, Turks just love it. It can be cooked with or without meat or even with dried spiced thin slices of beef called pastırma. Served with sade pilav (plain rice) and turşu (pickles and sauerkraut).
Best Known Dishes and Masterpieces of the Turkish Cuisine • Kebaps — Kebap is the common name for a dish where meat is coated around a skewer and grilled over a charcoal fire. Originally the meat consisted of lamb or beef, but nowadays you can also choose chicken.
• Doner –In essence it is a dish of beaten pieces of meat seasoned with suet, local herbs and spices, skewered on a spit and grilled vertically. Köfte — The Köfte basics are ground meat (usually lamb or mutton) mixed with crumbled bread, minced onions and spices. The most common dish is Izgara Köfte, where the meat mixture is grilled and served with grilled green peppers, chopped parsley, crumbled dried red peppers and rice or bread on the side. • Mantı – You could think of mantı as some kind of dumplings. This excellent Turkish dish contains two main ingredients: the dough and the filling, which consists of grounded beef or lamb, onion, salt and pepper.
Turkish Side Dishes are as popular as the mains. • Pilav — there is a great variety of pilaf in the Turkish cuisine, yet the easiest one to make is the most favourite and available one: • Sade Pilav. It is plain rice cooked in water with butter/ vegetable oil and noodle like small pasta pieces – şehriye. Varieties are rice cooked with eggplants, chickpeas, meat or liver slices; and of course spices like cinnamon, pepper, thyme, cumin and even almonds. • Bulgur Pilavı – this side dish looks like rice but is actually wheat. The most common type is cooked with roasted onions, green peppers, tomato paste and mint. One of my favourites. • Fried vegetables — Fried eggplants, green peppers, and zucchini with tomato sauce or yogurt are one of the best treats. According to your liking garlic is always welcomed with the sauce or in the yogurt. • Mücver — the main ingredients of this popular Turkish dish are shredded zucchini, eggs and flour. A very common cooking preference adds white cheese, green onions and mint. It is lightly fried in vegetable or olive oil, and served hot as a side dish. • Cacık — a very refreshing mixture of grinded or shredded cucumbers with diluted yogurt, garlic and mint. On a hot summers day some serve it with some ice cubes in it, to make it even more refreshing.

The Queen inspected HMS Ocean, taking a tour onboard the ship before it was officially decommissioned after being sold to the Brazilian navy Thousands of well-wishers attended the ceremony at HMNB Devonport to watch the navy vessel as it was officially taken out of service.
HMS Ocean, or the Mighty O as she is known throughout the fleet, has been sold to the Brazilian navy for £84m. She most recently carried out humanitarian work in the Caribbean following the effects of Hurricane Irma in British Overseas Territories. The helicopter and amphibious assault craft has also been involved in operations off Sierra Leone in 2000, Iraq in 2003 and Libya in 2011. HMS Ocean entered service in 1998 and has since covered more than 450,000 nautical miles. Until the arrival of the Queen Elizabeth class carriers, she remains the largest warship in the Navy’s surface fleet. Her Royal Majesty boarded the Ocean to meet some of those who’ve served on board her, and their families. The ship then sailed for her last official voyage into Plymouth Sound as sister vessels joined her, before docking at the port’s naval base. A helicopter fly-pass and a 21 gun salute will marked the Queen’s departure from Devonport.

Councillor Chaz Singh was chosen to serve as the Deputy Lord Mayor of Plymouth in 2012. Chaz was born and raised in Birmingham, moved to Plymouth in 2002 to run a business and in the last decade, has been actively involved in promoting the city and working in the community. Chaz won the MTM Community Champion Award in 2014 and has twice been nominated for an MTM Person of the Year Award.
“Our driving force is when we see young participant's active participation and development in these activities will be enormously recognised within their community as they will gain a positive reception from their local communities.” BHYC's key objectives are to build up the life skills of the disadvantaged young people as well as encouraging them into actively involved in sports and like many other community organisations lack solid financial backing and recognition for the service the organisation is giving the community.
Bristol Horn Youth Concern was launched in 2012 and since BHYC has made a difference in the community, empowering young people from communities with fewer opportunities. Bristol Horn Youth Concern aims to work with young people and youth from deprived areas of Bristol providing advice and information on skills for employment based on the philosophy that it is the community itself who can best create sustainable solutions to its problems. The organisation has made an impact on the community and brought a difference to lives in these communities by bringing better community cohesion, reduced anti-social behaviours, reduced youth crimes and empowered young people to get into employment market as well as high education perspective. Director Khalil Aden Abdi has criss-crossed the local communities to bring not only the Somali community on a common platform but all communities yet lacks support from main players to go a step further.
Recently BHYC treated group of young people from the inner city to Ashton Gate Stadium to watch Bristol Vs Hull City. The atmosphere of Ashton Gate stadium was surreal just the kind of outings liked by these future leaders “We are a community group that strives to make a difference in all aspects of community living, To Stand Against Racism & Inequality- anti- drug campaign – encourage both the young and old to engage is some kind of sport and activity to improve their health- healthy eating campaigns- BHYC is the voice of the disadvantaged people in the city and beyondspeak to us and engage…we are here to help”
