CELEBRATE DIWALI SAFELY Between April 2009 and March 2010 Avon Fire & Rescue Service attended 26 fires involving candles and tealights. That’s one every fortnight. Hundreds of people use candles during the winter months, but if used incorrectly candles can lead to fire breaking out. In one incident attended by Avon Fire & Rescue Service last year, a family had been using candles as part of their Diwali celebrations but left them unattended. The celebrations turned to panic as fire took hold in an upstairs room, quickly filling the house with toxic black smoke. Firefighters were on the scene within minutes and able to tackle the fire. But sadly the room was left badly damaged and the rest of the house suffered heavy smoke damage. House fires can be devastating, destroying belongings and endangering lives. Inhaling just two or three breaths of toxic smoke can be fatal. If the family had had a smoke alarm fitted in their home at the time of the fire it could have alerted them sooner. Working smoke alarms provide an early warning that a fire has broken out and can provide extra minutes for occupants to escape the property. Make sure you have a working smoke alarm and check the battery once a week to ensure it is working. Avon Fire & Rescue Service wants you to enjoy your Diwali celebrations safely. Eid al-Adha ‫‘ األ ضحى ع يد‬Īdu l’Aḍḥā) or "Eid-u'z-Zuha" "Festival of Sacrifice" or "Greater Eid" is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Isma'il (Ishmael )as an act of obedience to ALLAH, but instead was able to sacrifice a ram (by ALLAH’s command).

The exact day of the festival is decided by the position of the moon. According to the Hindu calendar, Amavasya or 'no moon day' is considered as the perfect day to celebrate Diwali. This dark night comes after every fortnight and in the month of Kartik, it marks this festival of lights and divas. The festival is celebrated by lighting diyas and candles to drive away the darkness of Amavasya. The word, ‘Deepavali’ means rows of lamps. This explains why Diyas are an integral part of the festival. Houses and business premises are renovated and decorated. Entrances are made colorful with lovely traditional motifs of Rangoli designs to welcome Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and prosperity.

DOLA RE BRISTOL HINDU STUDENTS UNION CELEBRATES NAVRATRI IN ITS TRUE TRADITION. DOLA RE WAS HELD AT THE STUDENTS UNION ON FRIDAY 29th OCTOBER 2010.

The Harbourside, in Bristol, England, has hosted the Bristol Harbour Festival for 39 years, with about 200,000 visitors attending live music, street performances and a variety of live entertainment, this year the festival had a record attendance of 250,000 people.

The festival features music stages, a dance stage, street theatre performances, and water displays. A highlight of the festival is the Saturday Night Fireworks presentation. Most of the activities are held by the waterfront, so a significant part of the festival is connected with the seagoing vessels moored nearby.

This 777 sq. km. tiger reserve is home to rare, endemic and endangered flora and fauna and forms the major watershed of two important rivers of Kerala, the Periyar and the Pamba. The tiger reserve has a rich diversity of animals. The diverse forest types found here support around several mammalian species, huge variety of birds and the region has an appreciable presence of reptilian and fish life. The tiger reserve is also home to around a large number of butterfly species. Even though dedicated for the conservation tigers, the Periyar Tiger Reserve is noted for its good elephant population.

Kerala's backwaters are the most popular tourist attraction of Kerala. The palm-fringed, tranquil backwaters were once just the state's trade highways. Kerala is her backwaters and lakes. They have dictated her history, shaped her present and promise a future by virtue of offering incomparable beauty and unique experiences. The state's palm-fringed backwaters are inland lakes connected by a network of canals. With 41 west-flowing rivers, the backwaters stretch to almost 1,900 kilometers. The backwater routes date back over the centuries and have been long used for all transportation needs, in particular trade in coconut, rubber, rice and spices. Today, these waterways link remote villages and islands to the mainland and nerve centers of the coastal area.

Located at Poonjar on the Pala-Erattupetta road in Kottayam district of Kerala, the Poonjar Palace is yet another magnificent testimony to the rich cultural heritage of Kerala. The Poonjar Palace is a glorious testimony to the regal opulence of a bygone era.

Of the traditional festivals of Kerala, Thrissur Pooram, often termed as the festival of festivals in Kerala is held in Thrissur, a northern district of Kerala. The tradition has that every year the Gods and Goddesses residing at temples in the neighboring regions come together for a day of celebration at the famous Vadakkumnatha Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Travellers to Kottayam make it a point to visit the Poonjar Palace, which is also noted for its traditional architecture. The palace, which is nearly 600 years old, houses a museum which attracts visitors in large numbers. The museum features the royal collection of antiques, rock-cut lamps and several sculptures.

Kerala Ayurveda Ayurveda originated in India more than 10,000 years ago and is believed to be the oldest healing science in existence, from which all other systems emerged. It deals elaborately with measures for healthful living during the entire span of life and its various phases. Besides, dealing with principles for maintenance of health, it has also developed a wide range of therapeutic measures to combat illness. These principles of positive health and therapeutic measures relate to physical, mental, social and spiritual welfare of human beings. Ayurveda is the science and Art of living life in a manner useful to society. It has for its objects the preservation of health in the healthy and the restoration of health to the diseased.

M: I have acted in Pakistani movies, modeled, and acted in a variety of stage plays and also have done activities in current media. R: What is your preference? M: I prefer family oriented plays or movies, reason being families enjoy these kinds of plays and the audience is diverse. Pakistani culture is very rich, that revolves around families and unity. R: Which films have you starred in? M: I have starred in many movies, to name a few, Gheran, Do Bhand Pani, De Mehndi and chandni. R: Which are your favorite films? M: Gharana, an Urdu movie and Gharah Padebaz, a Punjabi movie.I enjoyed doing these two as the storyline was family based. R: Why perform in the UK M: When I travel to the UK, I want to demonstrate to my audience the culture of Pakistan, maybe some people miss this, and just to remind them of the sweet time that has passed and those that are not aware of the culture, to show them how much love there is. PAKISTAN FLOODS APPEAL 2010 Up to 2.5 million people have been affected by devastating floods in north-west Pakistan. Rescuers are struggling to reach 27,000 people still cut off by the floods, which are the worst in 80 years. At least 1,100 people have died and thousands have lost everything. "In the worst-affected areas, entire villages were washed away without warning by walls of flood water," the Red Cross said in a statement…August 2nd 2010. One of the first statements released after the floods in Pakistan. The latest figures show over 20million have been displaced and in dire need of food, water, medicines and shelter and over 2000 have been killed. An Emergency Floods Appeal Funds was organized and as time was of essence it was decided to hold a Charity Dinner Evening at The White Swan House, currently a base for the association made possible by Chairman Nazir Muhammad.

The response was overwhelming and with about £20,000.00 raised on the day, it was decided to have the White Swan House as the Appeal Centre, open every day 10.00am to 5.00 pm for collection. Donation boxes were placed at various shops and business premises around the city and as of going to press the collection have reached £32,000.00

THE GENEROUS stranger who came to the aid of cancer sufferer Nikki Blunden has personally delivered the drugs which could prolong her life. Kind-hearted Nazir Mohammed drove from Bristol to Nikki's home in Bromhall Road, Dagenham with the first batch of lapatinib on Wednesday. As exclusively revealed in the POST, terminally ill Nikki was denied the breast cancer medicine, which could extend her life by months, by NHS Barking and Dagenham which said it was not cost effective.
