Photography by Mick Kirton R: What a fantastic performance. Is this your first time in UK. M: No, I have performed in UK before; my first appearance here was in 2004. R: What kind of artiste are you? M: I have acted in Pakistani movies, modeled, and acted in a variety of stage plays and also have done activities in current media. R: What is your preference? M: I prefer family oriented plays or movies, reason being families enjoy these kinds of plays and the audience is diverse. Pakistani culture is very rich, that revolves around families and unity. R: Which films have you starred in? M: I have starred in many movies, to name a few, Gheran, Do Bhand Pani, De Mehndi and chandni. R: Which are your favorite films? M: Gharana, an Urdu movie and Gharah Padebaz, a Punjabi movie.I enjoyed doing these two as the storyline was family based. R: Why perform in the UK M: When I travel to the UK, I want to demonstrate to my audience the culture of Pakistan, maybe some people miss this, and just to remind them of the sweet time that has passed and those that are not aware of the culture, to show them how much love there is. R: What message would like to give your fans and our readers? M: Come and watch our performances, they are especially for, with love from us and “wherever you are, stay with love.”

Legendary Bollywood mix maestro Bally Sagoo later did a cover version of the same. R: What are your future plans for your UK audience? CINEMA LOVERS FILM REVEIWS
by Valli
DIRECTOR: NEERAJ PATHAK, PRODUCER: KRISHAN CHOUDHRY CAST: SUNNY DEOL, ISHA KOPPIKAR, IRFAN KHAN & KONKANA SEN SHARMA
Right ya Wrong is is the story of two policemen Ajay Shridhar (Sunny Deol) and Vinay Patnaik (Irfan Khan) who come head to head with the murder of Ajay’s wife. Vinay suspects Ajay as the killer. Even though the stroyline seems a little to common the directing of Neeraj Pathak really pays off when one cop has to unraval a story of another cop.
RIGHT YA WRONG
However, the film can get a bit monotomous as the murder mystery is revealed very early on in the film which takes away from the suspence of the thriller. For anyone that loves Irfan Khan it is definitly a film to be seen however it is a one time viewing type of film.
DIRECTOR: DIBAKAR BANERJEE, PRODUCER: EKTA KAPOOR CAST: ARYA BANERJEE, NEHA CHAUHAN, ANUSHMAN JHA & ATUL MONGIA After the success of Khosla ka Ghosla and Oye Lucky Lucky Oye Banerjee has done it once again with Love, Sex and Dhokha. This is primerily three films cutting into each other, each one about Love, Sex and Dhokha. It has been filmed using handicam/survelliance cam footage techniques which has not been used in Bollywood before. It grabs moments of love, conflict, horror and much more rawly which has not yet been captured in Bollywood.
ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE DIRECTOR: ASHWNI DHIR; PRODUCER: AMITA PATHAK CAST: AJAY DEVGUN, KONKANA SEN SHARMA & PARESH RAWAL
LOVE, SEX AUR DHOKHA
Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge is based on Puneet (Ajay Devgan) and Munmun (Konkana Sen Sharma) who are a happily married couple who live in Mumbai who’s lives take a turn when a didtant relative Chahchaji (Paresh Rawal) turns up to live them unannounced. AWARDED SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A CAST IN MOTION PICTURE, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE Anil Kapoor is one of those rare Bollywood stars who have transformed with time. Arguably one of the most talented and celebrated stars, Anil was born on December 24TH 1959 in Tilak Nagar, Mumbai to film producer Surinder Kapoor and wife Nirmal. Born into a Punjabi Khatri family, his brothers Boney and Sanjay are also part of the film industry. He had his early education at Lady of Perpetual School in Chembur and moved on to St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. He married Sunita in 1984 and is blessed with two daughters, Rhea and Sonam Kapoor, who is a renowned actress in Bollywood. and a son Harsh. Anil hails from a family of Bollywood greats, his father was a cousin to Prithviraj Kapoor, thespian, veteran Bollywood legend who was father to Bollywood stars, Raj, Shammi and Shashi Kapoor. The Kapoor dynasty has ruled Bollywood for over 50 years and still does. Anil’s family tree does not stop here, he is brother in law to Diva Sridevi and his sister Reena is married to Sandeep of Marwah Studios, Nioda Film City. The man who came to international fame in Danny Boyle’s Award winning, Slumdog Millionaire, with his famous”Who wants to be a millionaire” outbursts is humble and a gentleman in every aspect. I had the privilege to meet and interview Anil for a television documentary in 1988 when he had just hit the peak of his career. Of the superstars at the event likes of legendary Rajendra Kumar, Deepak Parasher, Pankaj & Manhar Udhas and Madhuri Dixit, Anil was fun to work with.

INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON MY LOOKS I FOCUS ON THE CHARACTER THAT I AM PLAYING…ANIL KAPOOR Adorable in Ram Lakhan, intense rebel in Tezaab, mature undying love of Lamhe, and a landmark performance in Slumdog Millionaire, Anil’s repertoire boasts a wide range of gambit performances. He has created an enviably versatile image with the choice of his roles. He once stated in his acceptance speech at the Filmfare Awards, “It’s not the length of the role that counts but the contents in it”. Anil’s career debut was in Pallavi Anu Pallavi, a Kannada film by Maniratnam, followed by a Bollywood debut in 1979 in U.Mehra’s Hamare Tumhare in a supporting role. His first leading role came in 1983 in Woh Saat Din. In 1984 he appeared in Yash Chopra’s Mashaal that earned Anil his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor, a role he excelled so well that he almost outclassed legendary Bollywood thespian actor Dilip Kumar. He went on to star in blockbusters, Meri Jung in 1985, Karma in 1986 and Shekar Kapoor’s scifi film Mr. India in 1987. Tezaab, released in 1988 gave Anil his first Filmfare Best Actor’s Award and the movie was at the time Bollywood's highest earner. In 1999 he starred in another mega hit, Ram Lakhan, a film that gave Anil Kapoor his nickname of Mr. Lakhan. After a series of successful runs Anil won his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor in 1988 for his performance in the N.Chandra’s Tezaab. This was followed by another Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1992 for his role in Beta, a film by Indra Kumar. Since then Anil Kapoor has starred in close to 100 movies winning the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance in 1997 for the movie Virasat and in 2000 he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor for the movie Pukar. Anil’s first role in an international movie was in 2008 in Danny Boyle’s Oscar Award winning Slumdog Millionaire, in his supporting role as Prem Kumar, a role that earned him and the Slumdog cast, Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. His appearance in the eighth season of award winning action TV series 24 has attracted rave reviews from the American and international media. He has become the most recognizable Bollywood superstar after the success of Slumdog Millionaire. Mast The Magazine Limited Edition

-Jiah Khan
The sizzling actress in Bollywood Jiah Khan was born on February 20, 1988 in New York. Her mother Rabiya is an actress and Jiah Khan has been brought up single handedly by her. Jiah Khan later moved to London where she spent most of her days. Before coming to Bollywood Jiah Khan completed her A levels in film studies and literature in London at the Lee Strasberg’s Institute. The greatest turning point in her life was bagging the, Ram Gopal Verma directed movie Nishabd. Her popularity is highly attributed to her debut movie where she is paired against maestro, Amitabh Bachchan. After this movie Jiah Khan did not need any introduction to the Indian Movie audience. Jiah Khan has rocked Bollywood with her bold and stunning performance in the movie and her character in the movie created a nationwide sensation.
Jiah Khan has a deep passion for singing and has received formal training in classical opera. She began experimenting with music and was about to release her album. She recorded six pop numbers but ran out of finance and hence could not complete her project. Jiah Khan plays the piano.
Before doing the movie Jiah Khan was not aware that Amitabh Bachchan was a very famous Bollywood icon. This ignorance helped her to perform her role in the movie with ease and confidence. Jiah Khan admitted that her training at the Lee Strasberg’s institute helped her cope up with kissing scenes. Three things that she learnt during the making of the film from the Amitabh Bachchan himself were how to be patient, how to smell good and how to give disapproving looks.
If this is not enough Jiah Khan has great dancing talent. For the last nine years Jiah Khan has been mastering different forms of dancing that includes belly dancing, lambada, salsa, jazz, reggae, kathak and samba. However she admits that acting is her favourite. Apart from acting in the movie Jiah Khan has sang one of the songs “Take Lite” for the movie. Jiah Khan has written the lyric for the song and has also composed the music for it. The song reflects Jiah’s character and her philosophy in life. COMMUNITY AT HEART VAISAKHI NAGAR KIRTAN SIKH AWARENESS
SUNDAY 25th APRIL 2010 Baisakhi is one of the major festivals of Sikhs and is celebrated with lot of enthusiasm and gaiety in the state of Punjab and all throughout the world where there is a significant Sikh population. For the large farming community of Punjab, Baisakhi Festival marks the time for harvest of rabi crops and they celebrate the day by performing joyful bhangra and gidda dance. For the Sikh community, Baisakhi Festival has tremendous religious significance as it was on a Baisakhi Day in 1699, that Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru laid the foundation of Panth Khalsa-the Order of the Pure Ones. Baisakhi Festival falls on the first day of Vaisakhi month (April-May) according to Nanakshahi or Sikh Calendar. For this reason, Baisakhi is also popularly known as Vaisakhi. According to English calendar, the date of Baisakhi corresponds to April 13 every year and April 14 once in every 36 years. This difference in Baisakhi dates is due to the fact that day of Baisakhi is reckoned according to solar calendar and not the lunar calendar. People of Punjab celebrate the festival of Baisakhi with exuberance and devotion. As the festival has tremendous importance in Sikh religion, major activities of the day are organized in Gurdwaras. People wake up early to prepare for the day. Many also take bath in the holy river to mark the auspicious occasion. After getting ready people pay a visit to their neighborhood gurdwaras and take part in the special prayer meeting organized for the day. At the end of the Baisakhi ardas, congregates receive specially prepared Kara Prasad or sweetened semolina. This is followed by a guru ka langar or community lunch.
Nagar Kirtan is a Punjabi term which literally means “neighborhood Kirtan”. Nagar means village or neighborhood and Kirtan is a term describing the singing of Shabads(Divine Hymns). It signifies the procession of Sikh Sangat or Congregation through the village singing Holy hymns. The concept of Nagar Kirtan is to bring the message of God to the doorstep of the community. The is common in areas where the Sikh community reside during the month of Vaisakhi. The procession is led by the Panj Piare(five beloved of the Guru) followed by a float that carries the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. On the float they are several Sewadars(volunteers) performing Kirtan and attending to the Guru. Mast The Magazine Limited Edition

SUKHBIR REIGNS AS PRINCE OF BHANGRA Sukhbir is one of those rare musicians who are a product of a host of influences, ranging from Hindi film music to African and Latin rhythms. He has created a unique sound that has brought Bhangra to the forefront of the Asian music industry. Through an astute manipulation of the media and the public with his music and videos, Sukhbir has retained complete control of his career. Since the release of his 1995 debut album 'New Stylee', he has redefined the meaning of Bhangra mixed with rap, techno and dance rhythms. This unique blend of traditional drums and dance rhythms was created by the production unit at Dolphin Studios in Dubai headed by producer Tambi Fernando. He was instrumental in creating a definitive niche for this multi-talented artist by channeling his talent into the mainstream of the pop music industry. He is a calm and cool dude who does not hide any of his trade secrets from the media. He starts with his background, which is little known to his fans. "I was born in Jalandhar and raised in Nairobi, but never lost my love for my roots, culture and religion. I caught the Bhangra fever at an early stage. I had at that time the influence of my father, who was a priest and used to sing in gurdwaras. You can say my apprenticeship in music was under my father on and it proved invaluable in my career as a songwriter. It was not until my late twenties that I started showing my true potential on traditional and modern musical instruments. It was at that time that I started writing and singing in various languages in the nightclubs of Nairobi and Mombasa, Kenya. How did the big break come? "During one of these performances, I met this gentleman called Ketan Somaia. He was an astute Asian businessman who took a fancy to my style and signed me up. He was the person who changed my personality totally and carved out a totally different looking and singing Sukhbir."
A small pause and he continues: 'Ketan had a vision of making a star out of me and I am obliged to him because without his single-minded guidance none of my music would have reached my fans. It was he who invested huge money to set up the stateof-the-art Dolphin Studios in London and Dubai. Ketan introduced me to Tambi, rigorously to improve my voice." Sukhbir recorded and released his first album 'New Stylee' in 1994, which took the public by storm. This album released by BMG in India and EMI in the Gulf and South Africa broke all records, culminating in being nominated at the Channel [v] Awards in 1996 for the best debut album, best male vocalist and best video for `Punjabi Mound'. How did Sukhbir feel at that time? He has reason to smile. "I acknowledge my debut album's success to millions of teenage and adult fans. In fact, my goal was to grow along with my audience. “Sukhbir’s second album 'Oi Tiresto' was a mix of Latin percussion, Punjabi Dhol, Spanish guitar and techno spiced with Afro, Arabian and Caribbean sounds. Why so much of experimenting? "It might seem pretty bizarre, but it worked." Then came the ultimate album in Punjabi pop, 'Gal Ban Gayee'. The third album was released in 1997 on EMI and BMG. What was so unique about this album that it is still played by the masses and classes alike on the music circuit? "This album again took me back to my traditional Bhangra roots complementing the traditional instruments, the Dhol and dholak with a variety of modern grooves." 'Gal Ban Gayee' was a whopping success fetching Sukhbir a no.1 spot from Sony TV and a Golden Disc award from the Indian music industry. "It was really a high time for me. I was like flying in the sky. It brought more responsibilities and I saw to it in my next albums, 'Hai-Energy' and 'Prince of Bhangra', I came up to my fans' expectations." Sukhbir has performed over 21 countries across four continents. He has worked with almost all the legends of today's music industry.

Located at Poonjar on the Pala-Erattupetta road in Kottayam district of Kerala, the Poonjar Palace is yet another magnificent testimony to the rich cultural heritage of Kerala. The Poonjar Palace is a glorious testimony to the regal opulence of a bygone era. Travellers to Kottayam make it a point to visit the Poonjar Palace, which is also noted for its traditional architecture. The palace, which is nearly 600 years old, houses a museum which attracts visitors in large numbers. The museum features the royal collection of antiques, rock-cut lamps and several sculptures. Also part of the museum are exquisite furniture including a palanquin, a droni (treatment bed) carved out of a single piece of wood for Ayurvedic massages, huge chandeliers, palm leaf engravings, jewel boxes, varieties of lamps, sculptures of Nataraja (the dancing Shiva), grain measures, statues and weapons Close to the palace structure, visitors would find to their amazement a replica of the famous Madurai Meenakshi Temple in the neighbouring state of Tamilnadu. The walls of this temple bear sculptures that narrate stories from the puranas (the epics of ancient India). However, the most fascinating thing here is the chuttuvilakku (row of lamps) carved out of the stone walls of the nearby Sastha temple. Such rock-cut lamps are rarely found in India.
Of the traditional festivals of Kerala,Thrissur Pooram, often termed as the festival of festivals in Kerala is held in Thrissur, a northern district of Kerala. The tradition has that every year the Gods and Goddesses residing at temples in the neighbouring regions come together for a day of celebration at the famous Vadakkumnatha Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. This coming together is led from the front by Goddess Bhagavati, and Lord Krishna, presiding deities of Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi temples, Thrissur Pooram owes its genesis to the erstwhile ruler of Cochin State, Prince Rama Varma, Thampuran. Pooram is an annual event held on the pooram asterism in the Malayalam month of Medam. This month roughly corresponds to the months of April and May. If you want to experience the enthusiasm that slowly builds up and peaks on the pooram day, then you need to step inside the famous Thekkinkadu grounds in front of the Vadakkumnatha Temple. The commencement of the procession from the Thiruvambadi Temple with elephant carrying the idol of Goddess Bhagavati and first reaches Brahmaswom Madom before going to the Vadakkumnatha Temple. And finally by evening, 15 majestically caparisoned elephants of Thiruvambadi Temple emerge through the southern gate of the Vadakkumnatha Temple to face a line up of 15 equally decorated elephants from Paramekkavu Temple. Each pachyderm bears an umbrella holder, a peacock fan carrier and a yak-tail flywhisk wielder. Before dusk sets . This festival has become a major attractions for tourist with it rich colors, costumes and songs. Religiously it is one of the big events in the calendar.

GOD’S OWN COUNTRY-KERALA Kerala Ayurveda Ayurveda originated in India more than 10,000 years ago and is believed to be the oldest healing science in existence, from which all other systems emerged. It deals elaborately with measures for healthful living during the entire span of life and its various phases. Besides, dealing with principles for maintenance of health, it has also developed a wide range of therapeutic measures to combat illness. These principles of positive health and therapeutic measures relate to physical, mental, social and spiritual welfare of human beings. Ayurveda is the science and Art of living life in a manner useful to society. It has for its objects the preservation of health in the healthy and the restoration of health to the diseased. The word Veda in Ayurveda has been taken by all authorities to imply that it is both a part of and addendum to the great Vedas which have also been admitted by all savants of the West as "the oldest literature of the World". At the beginning of the creation, it is said, Brahma, the creator of the world recollected and created the vedas along with Ayurveda in a book form named Brahma Samhita which is not available today extends over a thousand chapters comprising altogether 100,000 slokas. Brahma first of all taught Ayurveda to Prajapati and who taught it to Aswanikumaras, then to Indra, after him there developed two schools of Ayurvedic science- Athreya School of physicians and Dhanwantari School of Surgeons.
Kerala's backwaters is the most popular tourist attraction of Kerala. The palm-fringed, tranquil backwaters were once just the state's trade highways. Kerala is her backwaters and lakes. They have dictated her history, shaped her present and promise a future by virtue of offering incomparable beauty and unique experiences. The state's palm-fringed backwaters are inland lakes connected by a network of canals. With 41 west-flowing rivers, the backwaters stretch to almost 1,900 kilometers. The backwater routes date back over the centuries and have been long used for all transportation needs, in particular trade in coconut, rubber, rice and spices. Today, these waterways link remote villages and islands to the mainland and nerve centers of the coastal area. The most interesting area in the backwaters is the Kuttanad region, called the rice bowl of Kerala. The area is probably the only place in the continent where farming is done below sea level, using a system of dykes and bunds. The largest backwater stretch is the Vembanad Lake, which opens out into the sea at the Kochi port and flows through three districts-Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kochi. The Ashtamudi Lake has eight 'arms' covering a major portion of Kollam district in the south, and is the second largest lake in the state.
Alappuzha is one of the major centers for backwater boat trips. The intricate network of canals through this town has earned it the sobriquet "The Venice of the East". Small but long country boats are the taxies of the water. The coir workers present an interesting sight as they soak coconut fiber in pools, beat them and wind the strands on long spindles stretched between an endless lines of coconut trees. WILDEBEEST MIGRATION IN THE LAND OF BIG GAME SAFARI-KENYA AFRICA’S BIGGEST WILDLIFE SPECTACLE! Like eternity, the staccato of millions of hoof-beats goes on and on. Adrenaline levels are high and everything seems to be a rush against time. With all verbal communication seemingly waning off the thumping and galloping fill the air as millions of trooping wildebeest moving in an amazingly clockwise patterned motion are only concerned with one thing; crossing the great Mara river unscathed.
Welcome the endless plains of east Africa that are the setting for this world’s greatest wildlife spectacle where over 1.5 million wildebeest accompanied by 191,000 elegant Zebras and witty Thomson’s Gazelles and thousands of Elands make a dash across the Mara in search of greener pasture. This spectacle takes place at a background of the vast champagne coloured hills of Kenya’s Masaai Mara stretching to the Serengeti plains a region relentlessly tracked by Africa’s great predators, prowling on the pilgrims who have to trek and cover well over 2898 kilometres each year in search of rain ripened grass. It is a migration of such complexity, scale, and marvel that even the great caribou in Canada's Arctic pale by comparison. Everything from the smallest and the most fragile to the largest soaring predators such as the lion king of the jungle paw and hoof their way. The ungulates running to save their precious life while on land and in water when crossing the waters of the Mara River that are ruled by the huge crocodiles brandishing razor sharp teeth, extremely strong jaws and a powerful tail that could send of a gazelle into a stupor. Adding pathos and drama to this breath taking event, a constellation of predators paw their way hoping to make a meal of the mass motion while a lioness stealthily follows after the heard in readiness to catch a meal for her cabs that are also eagerly honing their hunting skills chasing after the rather weak, famished and thirsty calves of the grazers. This great wildebeest migration is regarded as one of the world's greatest natural wonder and the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet that is the
This great wildebeest migration is regarded as one of the world's greatest natural wonder and the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet that is the single most breathtaking event in the animal kingdom. The ungulates follow an annual circular route around this entire ecosystem in an endless quest for fresh pastures and water. Usually the rumbling hooves of the wildebeest and the clouds of red dust they leave behind have become a symbol as well as a strong migratory instinct that defies crocodile-infested rivers, wild currents, and flocks of predators lying in wait. Dating back to the early 1960s, this event begins with the calving season that is remarkably synchronized usually taking place between the months of January to March. This period is characterised by plenty of rain ripened grass available. An estimated 500000 calves are born during this time. Interestingly, the Wildebeest society is much more structured at this time. Groupings of pregnant cows, cows that have calved, groups of yearlings recently separated from their mothers and bachelor herds, which are usually excluded by the territorial bulls from the calving grounds, are seen. March to May the herds begin to sweep west and north towards the long grass plains and woodlands of the Serengeti's western corridor. Here the herd divides when some swing further west than others who head northwest to later meet again in the Masaai Mara. At this time, the long rains have started and the southern grass plains they leave behind are depleted of all food, so the herds must press on. Between June and July, the herd final push towards further north results in a massing along the banks of the swollen Mara River, producing one of the worlds truly most spectacular sights.
At this time, the trekking has taken four months and the animals are in desperate need of water to drink and grass to graze. At this point many young ones die of exhaustion and thirst before reaching the Mara River. However many survive just only to find one huge obstacle on their way; swimming across the swelling crocodile infested Mara River.
Between July and October the wildebeest reside in the Masaai Mara, grazing the lush green grasses that the earlier rains encouraged. The mass of over two million animals cover the savannah and grasslands as far as the eye can see. Predation by leopard, lion and hyena at this time is great simply due to numbers. There are just so many prey animals around that the predators have to take advantage to feed their own young, a time of plenty for all. October to November is when the short rains begin to fall in the south and east Serengeti, so the herds start to leave the Masaai Mara, crossing the Mara River yet again, bringing all the same perils as before. They head slowly back to the Serengeti's eastern plains. By the time they arrive it will be February and the cycle is complete. Arrival at the calving grounds marks the end of this, and the start of the next year’s migration. In all 250,000 wildebeest die during this 12898 kilometre journey, the sick, the lame, old and very young, but the next calving will produce around 500,000 new calves who must take their chances along with the adults on the following 'Great Migration'.

PERSONALITY PROFILE BUSHARAT ALI He started as a political activist in Pakistan, moved to the UK with the same passion for the community and finally settling as a business entrepreneur. Q. Tell us a little about yourself. B. I was born in Kamalia, in the Punjab district of Pakistan, had my early education in Kamalia and proceeded to Government PST College in Kamalia for my BA. From childhood it was my passion to work for the youth and community, so it was no surprise to my family when I joined the Political Students Union of MSF (Muslim Students Federation of Pakistan).at 18. I was a very active member full of ideas for change of a better future for the youth and in 4 years I was elected senior vice president of MSF, Punjab. This brought me close to the big wigs of politics and formed a close relationship with Shabaaz Nawaz, then Chief Minister of Punjab and brother to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. I held various positions in NGOs and government organizations assisting the youth. In 2002 I moved to the United Kingdom when the democratic government of Pakistan was removed from power. Q. Wow, that’s an interesting brief, what are the youth projects you initiated in Pakistan? B: I emphasized on IT projects, I felt that the youth in Pakistan were being left behind in IT technology, so I decided to encourage and introduce IT related youth programmes. Pakistan youth had no vision of the future. All they wanted was to get a degree and work; this was of no benefit to neither the nation nor the individual. Q: How did you do this? B: I organized students study circles, extracurricular clubs, national debates across Punjab on IT, Science and Economics and encouraged both male and female youth to participate. Q: knowing the traditional and religious values of Pakistan on segregation, how did you manage? B: It was very difficult to put together as our society only looks at segregation and not the benefits of our future. Our Prophet Muhammad (peace is upon Him) has said that we treat all equally and give all the best in education, irrespective of their gender.
So all my events followed the laid down teachings of our Prophet (PBUH) in regards to women participation and this was accepted by the majority of the community. Q: Why did you move here? I moved here after Nawaz Sharif was overthrown by the army dictator, life became unbearable, insecure, and very difficult, especially for somebody like me who had been involved politically in a democratic society but could not operate without fear in the dictator government. Q: What next? B: I joined my brothers Gold business but still was craving for politics. I took a close look at the local scene and realized that I could share my experience with the Youth of the area as the then sitting members were looking after the entire community so the Youth were not fully involved in community affairs. Q: What next? B: I consulted my family and friends and opted to join the Labor party. Q: What next B: In a short time due to my hard work, and passion I gained recognition in the party, I became a labour youth officer. I got involved with various community groups, was vice chairman Eastern Residence Network, Ambassador of peace, Member of Kashmir Community, Member of Palestine Peace processor, and many more. Q: How did this schedule affect your business life? B: Not much really as I had programmed myself well.
Mast The Magazine Limited Edition
I brought in new creative marketing ideas, through media sponsorship, advertising, building product websites and this did well for the trade. Before I go deeper onto that I was given all clear to stand for the local council elections of 2005 for Hengrove Ward, though I lost it was an experience. I also stood for the Lawrence Hill Ward at another election and lost but was instrumental in campaigning for a fellow councilor. I have worked very hard to bridge our community into my party which has been successful and an achievement for me. Q: When did you launch your brand? B: To start with I had a long look at the political scene, and realized that I had to change careers. My status had changed; I was now married and needed time with my family. I started off with a Gold Factory, manufacturing jewellery which soon shut down. In 2009 I opened my showroom, Car Chase UK, soon followed by Diamond Chase and an Indian Restaurant & Takeaway, Curry Hut all on Gloucester Road. Q: Interesting, noting that 2009 was not the best of times to start a new business, did you feel you were taking a risk. B: As a Muslim I have faith and believe that if one has intention in any venture, with hard work, passion and determination Allah will always bless the business and success will be imminent. Q: What’s your joy in life? B: My family, I married in 2006 and am blessed with two lovely princesses, Zainab and Khanza and they are an inspiration in my life. Q: What are you future plans? B: I intend to go into media, start a TV channel, to educate the youth that is my dream.

The 37-year old mum-of-two from Thornbury in South Gloucestershire has seen her culinary career really take off in a span of 14 months. She began by simply offering cookery lesson at the town’s community centre and doing some occasional catering for dinner parties. Romy launched her brand of Romy, s sauces at the Thornbury Food Fair. The range includes, Makhni and Jalfrezi, mango chutney, pickles and mixed spices.
Makhni sauce
37 year old mother of two, Romy Gill poses with her collection of sauces and pickles for executive photographer Mick Kirton from her base in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire.
Makhni sauce is used to create the Punjab’s famous dish Butter Chicken at home. The Makhni sauce is made from Tomato, ginger, red chili, cream and fenugreek leaves. You will only need to add diced chicken or Paneer (for vegetarians) to the sauce. It will leave a taste of spices in your mouth with hint of chili in the end. . There are no artificial colours or preservatives in this sauce, the natural spices in the sauce give the perfect look to the dish. “I like the warmth of the ginger and aromatic flavors of fenugreek leaves in this creamy dish. This sauce is based on my Grandmother’s recipe which has being enjoyed by several generations in our family”

This is a yearly event, which is held normally the weekend after the Easter holidays. It celebrates the Sri Lankan New Year, which normally falls on the 14th or 15th April. The main reason for this event in Bristol is to bring the Sri Lankan Community together because there are not many in Bristol. There are Sinhalese, Muslims and Tamil Sri Lankans. The traditional Sri Lankan activities are breaking pots, pillow fight and the Grand Finale is crowning the Sri Lankan New Year Queen which was all held at the family event.
