Ramadan allows us to tap into unparalleled spiritual energy that sees the faithful perform extraordinary feats. However, the greatest miracle of Ramadan is in the personal transformation that takes place. It takes us out of the profane and into the sacred. It moves us to truly become Adamic human beings, focused on good, and determined to avoid detriments that tarnish our hearts. We remain vigilant and in a state of remembrance of Allah (dhikr). Let us not waste the opportunity that Ramadan affords us. It is our chance to rekindle our relationship with Allah. Allah’s mercy pours throughout this month unlike others, and it is our opportunity to make up for our past misdeeds. Only you can make the most of Ramadan and seize this opportunity by realizing the inherent benefits that come with this most blessed month. May Allah make us make the most of this Ramadan and bestow us with mercy, compassion, patience and grace. Amin! Our Ramadhan editorial has been written by Aftab Ahmed Malik, the team at Radio Mast & Mast The Magazine wish all Ramadhan Mubarak .

Stay safe in the kitchen Around 50% of all fires attended by Avon Fire & Rescue Service start in the kitchen and involve fat or oil catching fire. House fires can be devastating, destroying belongings and endangering lives. Just two or three breaths of toxic smoke can be fatal. A moment’s distraction could lead to a serious fire and endanger life. Make sure you know how to stay safe during Ramadan and Eid Ul Fitr when cooking with hot oils and fats.

Tips on staying safe in the kitchen: Never fill a pan more than one third full of fat or oil Never leave the pan or grill unattended when the heat is switched on Never put food in a pan if the oil begins to smoke Try to avoid using a deep pan full of oil or fat. Deep fat fryers are much safer as they are thermostatically controlled Never wear loose clothing near to cooking materials, as it could catch fire or get caught on something and pull it over

If a pan does catch fire: Do not try to move it – it could cause burns which last a lifetime Turn off the heat, if it is safe to do so Never throw water on it, this will only make it worse and could cause an explosion Get out, stay out and call 999. If possible close the kitchen door on your way out and leave it to the professionals to deal with. Make sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home. The devices will provide you and your family with an early warning that a fire has broken out and will give you extra minutes to escape the property, particularly at night. Check the batteries in your smoke alarms once a week to make sure they are working. Fire fighters from Avon Fire & Rescue Service carry out Home Fire Safety Visits in the homes of those most at risk of fire, fitting free smoke alarms where required. To find out if you qualify for a Home Fire Safety Visit call 0117 926 2061 or for more fire safety advice.

MAST DAR UL SHAFA

BUREWALA IN PAKISTAN Mr Chaudhary, Managing Director and Principal of Bristol College of Accountancy, for many years had hoped to be able to help the less privileged and needy people live a better, more dignified life. He had very closely observed how some people within the society had everything they could wish for and how the others had nothing, not even basic necessities of life. When he set up his college business, he vowed to donate a proportion of the earnings towards community service. He allocated a sizeable portion of his land in Pakistan with a view to one day constructing a medical facility on it. In 2008, he founded a charity “Dar Ul Shafa” and began construction of a small clinic near Burewala in Pakistan. This charity would provide free medical care to the local communities, and create medical awareness in the region by sending its trained staff to local communities in rural areas to educate and advice on healthy living.

FRONT VEIW OF DAR UL SHAFA

Parallel to the construction of the hospital building, Mr. Chaudhary was busy sourcing medical equipment for this hospital from the UK. He would look out for discounted deals and offers for good quality equipment for the hospital. In late 2009, the first two containers of medical equipment from the UK were dispatched to Pakistan.

PART OF THE FACILITIES AT THE NEW HOSPITAL

PROJECT MANAGER WAKIL & MR CHAUDHY STANDING BY ONE OF THE TWO AMBULANCES RECENTLY PURCHASED

The equipment included a mixture of 47 high spec NHS standard multi-way manual and electric adjustable beds, 8 special care electrically adjustable beds, birthing couches, wheel chairs, walking aids, heart health monitoring systems, a dialysis machine, a full body X ray scanner, a small surgical unit, a full dental unit, incubators, microscopes, blood pressure and sugar test machines, along with other necessary furniture and disposables. The dialysis machine was probably the first dialysis machine within a 4 hour radius in the region. The full body X ray scanner is the first in the region. This scans the full body down to the smallest joint and can be used for keyhole surgeries, projecting a live image on two CRT displays.

Months into the project, it became evident that a small clinic would not suffice nor provide the level of service that was really needed. The whole project was then re-planned and it was decided that Bristol College will sponsor a hospital. The budget more than doubled but Mr. Chaudhary was determined to make this happen. A modular design of the hospital was developed and the construction was planned in stages. CONSTRUCTION OF THE PHARMACY & HOSPITAL MOSQUE The first building would consist of a waiting hall, 8 In March 2011, Mr. Chaudhary purchased two NHS ambulances, a examination rooms, a rest room, 2 separate wards for male top of the range fully equipped Mercedes Sprinter and a Citroen and female patients, a pharmacy and 2 treatment rooms. The Mercedes Sprinter would be used to set up medical Bristol College of Accountancy provided funds on a monthly camps in rural locations, and can allow for a thorough basis and by mid-2009; the first hospital building was taking examination of a patient in the ambulance whilst the Citroen shape. As of today, the hospital building is complete, receiving its final touch of paint. The outbuildings will be completed and painted by August, the mosque and the canteen will hopefully be ready shortly afterwards. Mr. Chaudhary is humbled and excited at the same time with the progress of Dar Ul Shafa and is hopeful that it will commence its operation by the end of this year. In future, he hopes to open a school for children, a community centre and also a nursing school, all to be run as a charity, and next to the hospital. The project has gone from strength to strength and has achieved great results in a very short frame of time, backed financially by Bristol College of Accountancy and driven by desire and determination. Alhamdulillah this project has not had the need to ask for charitable donations, Mr. Chaudhary is hopeful that the community will now see what has been achieved; all by the Grace of Allah Almighty and in sharing his vision will provide support and encouragement to make this project even more successful.

SPECIAL REPORT

THE HIJAB

Countries across Europe have wrestled with the issue of the Muslim veil, whether in the form of a body covering Burka, or the Niqab which covers the face apart from the eyes. France has become the first country to ban the full face Islamic veil in public places. In a country of about 5 million Muslims, the largest in Western Europe, it is said only about 2000 women wear full veils, a figure we cannot verify. Under this ban that took effect on Monday 11th April, No woman, French or Foreign will be able to leave their home in France with their face hidden behind a veil without running the risk of a fine. Our issue here is, will this act oppressing human rights ride through the rest of Europe, and will Britain as a tolerant nation, entertain such a dictatorial law. People might wonder what hijab is. In The Concise Encyclopedia of Islam, hijab is an Arabic word. The literal meaning is ‘a veil’, ‘curtain’, ‘partition’ or ‘separation’. This shows that hijab is used a screen or a protection to cover a women’s body to maintain their modesty. However women are allowed to remove the veil around their immediate family or anyone who cannot legally marry them. It is said in the Holy Quran: “Say to the Believing Women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: and they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they must draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husband's sons, or their women”. (Surah a Nur 24:30). In this verse it shows us that it is mandatory for a woman’s body to be veiled, as a form of modesty. Islamic law states that both men and women are to be modest and not expose themselves in any form outside marriage: Therefore hijab plays a big part in maintaining these laws, in helping men and women to maintain their modesty, and restrain themselves from sexual desires outside marriage. We should not attract any negative attention, such as sexual attraction. In Islam, a Muslim woman’s body is sacred. If women decide to cover themselves, it is not because her husband or her father or anyone forced her. If she chooses to follow what the verse in the Holy book says, she is only doing it to please her Creator. Not to please her mother, father or society. Enforcing such laws in the pretext of it being an oppression against women and worst still, terrorism, is taking away one’s right to live in a free and democratic society. In what way does covering up your body mean that you are being oppressed? Modesty is something that every human who has a sense of morality accepts as being the norm. In the west, they glorify the human body in its nakedness.

Police in the Australian state of New South Wales are to be allowed to demand the removal of burqas and other face veils so they can identify people. Some of the high profile cases coming to light.

Munira Noor Toronto Canada Just in case people do not remember, 40 years ago Christian women never went to church without covering their heads. Even the nuns themselves today who have committed themselves to a religious life, how do they dress? They are not Muslims, but they cover themselves with an outer garment and nothing on them is seen except the face and the hands. Islam liberates the female to a dignified state both consciously uplifting her and perfecting her character. We should never be blinded by the makeup of our physical but our spirituality. RESPECT for everyone. However that is not to say women are not oppressed. I have never seen a society yet where women are treated equally. There is nothing in the Quran or the life of the Prophet (PBUH) that is disrespectful to women in anyway what so ever, none at all. Women in the West were not allowed to inherit or be educated until sometime in 1900s. In Islam women always had that right. We have the right to own our own business, the right to marry who we want, the right to divorce, and the right to go to school. Women have freedom to do whatever they want, and actively participate in their societies. In Ayah 32 of Sura al-Ahzab. ".. And stay quietly in your houses," did not mean confinement of the wives of the Prophet (S) or other Muslim women and make them inactive. Muslim women remained in mixed company with men until the late sixth century (A.H.) or eleventh century (CE). They received guests, held meetings and went to wars helping their brothers and husbands, defend their castles and bastions. In verse 35 Islam teaches equality towards both sexes and not oppression. Hijab is more uplifting than oppression “O Prophet! Tell Thy wives And daughters, and the Believing women, that they should cast their Outer garments over Their Persons (when outside): That they should be known (As such) and not molested.”(Quran, Chapter: AL Azhab, Verse 59) This verse in the Quran clearly indicates that being modest is a protection from harm. How many stories do we hear of in the press of Women getting raped, beaten, sexually or emotionally abused, murdered, etc. Oppression against women will always exist. But Islam does not teach oppression. However, some people view the hijab as a form of oppression. Consequently, people who do not understand Islam, quickly characterize Islam as a religion of oppression. You cannot attack a religion, and say a religion oppresses women? Religion does not oppress. People oppress People. Historical Written traditions of the holy prophet say that he said: "O MY servants, I have forbidden oppression for myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another." How can a religion that is against oppression be perceived as being oppressive? For a Muslim woman to cover herself and not display her beauty in front of strange men is not because she's oppressed. She knows that she does not need to show her body to be heard. Take it from a Muslim woman. I am not oppressed.

MARRIAGE IN ISLAM

The Prophet (SAW) “Young men, those of you who can afford to get married should do so, for it helps you lower your gaze and preserves your chastity; but those who cannot should fast, for it is a means of cooling the sexual passion.” [AlBukhari] In Islamic society marriage is of the utmost importance and an intrinsic part of Muslim life. So much so, that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “When the servant of Allah marries, he has fulfilled half the (responsibilities laid on him by the) faith; so let him be God conscious with respect to the other half.” [Mishkat] By choosing the sanctity of marriage, we turn away from wrongdoing, such as fornication, adultery and homosexuality. This also protects society, providing the right conditions in which to bring up a faithful Muslim family. Unlike other religions, Islam does not support celibacy as an expression of faith. Marriage is seen as an act of worship in itself. Islam acknowledges that human desires are natural and sanctions marriage as an outlet for them. Men and women have been created in such a way that they are attracted to each other, and marriage provides them with a legal framework in which to enjoy each other’s company, fulfil their sexual desires and to ensure the continuity of the human race. The Qur’an tells us: “One of His signs is that He created for you spouses of your own species, so that you might find comfort with them. And He put mutual love and affection in your hearts. Surely in this there are lessons for the thinking people.” [30:21] So that we may get the best out of marriage, it is essential that we fully understand this great institution, with which Allah (SWT) has blessed his followers. Marriage is a serious and permanent commitment, which brings together a man and a woman in order that they may form an everlasting bond. This offers them the opportunity to enjoy a sexual relationship, gain support and companionship and to form a family. It is recommended that young Muslim men marry as soon as they are able to support a wife. This ensures that their sexual desires are channelled into a lawful relationship and prevents the weaker among them from committing zinaa (fornication). There are conditions that need to be met before a marriage can be considered. A man needs to be mature and have the means to support a wife and, ultimately, a family. A wife needs to have reached puberty and possess those skills necessary to run a household. Traditionally, the family was responsible for searching for a suitable partner for the son or daughter and women often played a passive role, although, thanks to the Prophet (SAW), a girl has the right to express her views on a prospective partner:

"The permission of the virgin is to be sought. And if she does not object, her silence is her permission." [Al-Bukhari, Muslim,)

The teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah describe how spouses should behave towards each other. They call for kindness, fairness, compassion, love, companionship, patience and mercy between husband and wife. By following the lessons of the Qur’an spouses will be a comfort to one another and their relationship will blossom. The love between Muslim spouses also includes the love of Allah (SWT) and a strong, mutual desire to serve him. This provides the couple with strength when times are hard and a source of comfort, leading to tranquillity in their relationship. The family is regarded as the centre of Islamic society and, as marriage is the only way to form a family. One of the main purposes of marriage is to raise pious children, who are faithful to Islam, in order to continue the Muslim Ummah. And, just as Islam sets standards of behaviour for husbands and wives, so it also grants children a number of rights and duties. Interfaith marriages are permitted between a Muslim man and a Christian or Jewish woman under the same conditions as he would marry a Muslim woman. In addition, it is essential that she is Muhsanah (chaste) and that she refrains from sex before marriage. She must also be practising her religion at the time of the nikah. Islam realises that humans are not perfect and has provided divorce as a way out for couples who really cannot continue to live together. The Prophet (SAW) declared that “Among lawful things, divorce is most hated by Allah”. Divorce leads to unhappiness, the break-up of families, and the breakdown of traditional values, but Islam recognises that refusing an unhappily married couple the opportunity to divorce risks greater damage to their faith and long-term happiness. Even though divorce is permissible in Islam, there are certain restrictions and limitations that husbands and wives must be aware of. The Qur’an and the Hadith describe all the laws of divorce as well as the laws of marriage, but remind us that divorce must be a last resort. “Should you fear that division will arise amongst them, appoint an arbitrator on the husband’s side and an arbitrator on the wife’s side from amongst their relatives and send them to them? As soon as they desire peace and reconciliation, the Lord will vouchsafe it to them for he is all-knowing and wise.” (Quran: 4:35)]

MAST RAMADHAN KAREEM Ramadhan pronounced [rɑmɑˈdˤɑːn]) also Ramadan, Ramadaan, Ramazan, Romjan (Bangla)) is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It lasts 29 to 30 days. It is the Islamic month of fasting, in which participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and sexual relations from dawn until sunset Fasting is intended to teach Muslims about patience, humility, and spirituality. It is a time for Muslims to fast for the sake of Allah and to offer more prayer than usual. As compared to the solar calendar, the dates of Ramadan vary, moving backwards about eleven days each year depending on the moon. Muslims believe Ramadan to be an auspicious month for the revelations of God to humankind, being the month in which the first verses of the Qur'an were revealed to the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. Ramadan is a time of reflecting, believing and worshiping God. Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam and to avoid obscene and irreligious sights and sounds. Purity of both thoughts and actions is important. The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the inner soul and free it from harm. It also teaches Muslims to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate; thus encouraging actions of generosity and charity (Zakat).

although the first two groups must endeavor to feed the poor in place of their missed fasts. Also exempt are pregnant women if they believe it would be harmful to them or the unborn baby, women during the period of their menstruation, and women nursing their newborns. A difference of opinion exists among Islamic scholars as to whether this last group must make up the days they miss at a later date, or feed poor people as a recompense for days missed. While fasting is not considered compulsory in childhood, many children endeavor to complete as many fasts as possible as practice for later life. Lastly, those travelling (musaafir) are exempt, but must make up the days they miss. Since it is a festival of giving and sharing, Muslims prepare special foods and buy gifts for their family and friends and for giving to the poor and needy who cannot afford it. At sunset, the family will gather for the fast-breaking meal known as Iftar. The meal starts with the ritual eating of a date , just as Prophet Muhammad was believed to have done. Then it's time for a prayer to thank Allah followed by the meal. In many homes, this is a simple meal of fruits and vegetables along with traditional dishes. Over time, Iftar has grown into banquet festivals. This is a time of fellowship with families, friends and surrounding communities, but may also occupy larger spaces at mosques or banquet halls, where a hundred or more may gather at a time.

In addition to fasting, Muslims are encouraged to read the entire Qur'an. Some Muslims perform the recitation of the entire Qur'an by means of special prayers, called Tarawih, which are held in the mosques every night of the month, during which a whole section of the Qur'an (Juz', which is 1/30 of the Qur'an) is recited. Therefore the entire Qur'an would be completed at the end of the month.

Charity is very important in Islam. This is a time when Muslims give plenty to charities and in the UK charity oganisations travel across the country collecting donations in Mosques and others use the media such as the temporary licensed Ramadhan Radio Stations, that have mushroomed in UK broadcasting, propagating the meaning of Ramadhan.

Ramadan is also a time when Muslims are to slow down from worldly affairs and focus on self-reformation, spiritual cleansing and enlightenment; this is to establish a link between themselves and God through prayer, supplication, charity, good deeds, kindness and helping others.

Laylat al-Qadr : Sometimes referred to as "the night of decree or measures", is considered the most holy night of the year. Muslims believe that Laylat al-Qadr is the night in which the Qur'an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It is believed to have occurred on an oddnumbered night during the last 10 days of Ramadan, either the night of the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th. Shiites also commemorate the attack on Imam `Ali ibn Abi Talib and his subsequent martyrdom every year on the 19th, 21st and 23rd of Ramadan.

Muslims should start observing the fasting ritual upon reaching the age of puberty, so long as they are healthy, sane and have no disabilities or illnesses. The elderly, the chronically ill, and the mentally ill are exempt from fasting,

RAJAB- THE MONTH OF ALLAH By Nusrat Sheikh

Merits of Rajab

Rajab is one of the four sacred months. It stands alone, unlike the other three which come together (Dul Qaadah, Dul Hijja and Muharram). The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “Rajab is the month of Allah, Sha`bān is my month, and Ramadan is the month of my Ummah.” The fact that it is the month of Allah means that it is worthy of veneration, and the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) himself would venerate it. When the month entered he would seek its blessings, saying:

“O Allah bless us in Rajab and Sha`bān and enable us to reach Ramadan!” Rajab is the key to the months of goodness which follow it. For that reason Imam Abu Bakr al-Warraq said: “In the month of Rajab you sow the seeds, in Sha`ban you irrigate them and in Ramadan you reap the harvest.” He also said: “Rajab is like a wind, Sha`ban is like a cloud and Ramadan is like rain.” Rajab was the month in which the Prophet’s blessed parents were married, and the month in which Sayyida Amina became pregnant with the Best of Creation (PBUH). Most of the scholars say that the Isra’ (Night Journey) and the Mi`raj (Ascension) took place on the 27th night of Rajab. This was the night on which the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) received the greatest ennoblement that a created being ever received from Allah. When one of the pious scholars became ill he said: “I have asked Allah to delay my death until the month of Rajab because I have heard that those that die in that month are saved from the Fire.” Allah answered his supplication and he died in Rajab.

The First Night of Rajab

It is recommended to turn to Allah in the first night of Rajab. It has been narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “There are five nights on which du`ā’ is not rejected: the first night of Rajab, the fifteenth night of Sha`bān, Thursday night, the night before `Eid al-Fitr and the night before `Eid alNahr (al-Adha).” Sayyiduna `Ali, may Allah be well pleased with him, used to allocate extra amounts of time for worship on four nights - the first night of Rajab, the nights before the two `Eids, and the 15th night of Sha`bān. For this reason the scholars of Tarim hold a special gathering of Dhikr on the first night of Rajab and Mawlid the following morning.

Rajab, the Month of Istighfār

The best way of preparing the heart to receive divine gifts is purification and repentance. For this reason the scholars say that Rajab is the month of seeking forgiveness, whereas Sha`ban is the month of sending peace and blessings upon the Prophet, and Ramadan is the month of the Qur'an. Thus it is recommended to seek much forgiveness in Rajab. Some of the scholars compiled special formulae of istighfar especially for Rajab, among them Habib Hasan the son of Imam `Abullah bin `Alawi al-Haddad.

In Tarim the following formula is read 70 times in congregation immediately after the `Isha Prayer every night in Rajab. The one reading it raises his hands while doing so: Transliteration: "Rabbi ‘ghfir li war’hamni wa tub `alayya." Translation: “Oh Allah forgive me, have mercy upon me, and grant me repentance.”

Good Deeds in Rajab

The reward of our good actions is multiplied in the sacred months, so it is recommended to do as many good deeds as possible. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) recommended fasting at least some days in each of the sacred months. Some of the Companions, among them Sayyiduna `Umar and his son `Abdullah and al-Sayyida `A’isha, liked to make `Umrah in Rajab. At the same time bad deeds are also more serious in the sacred months so we must do our utmost to avoid any wrongdoings. A sacred month is similar to a sacred place. It is recommended to bathe and purify oneself before entering the Haram of Mecca and while in it one is more conscious of the weight of one’s actions. Likewise with a sacred month – we try to enter it in a state of purity and we try to maintain that purity throughout through doing good and avoiding evil. “O Allah bless us in Rajab and Sha`ban and enable us to reach Ramadan. Peace and blessings upon the one who guided us to all good and warned us of all evil, our Master Muhammad(PBUH) and his blessed family and Companions and all those that follow his guidance until the end of time.” Taken from Kanz al-Najah wa’l-Surur by Shaykh `Abd al-Hamid Quds and Lata’if al-Ma`rif by Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali. May Allah reward Sidi Amjad Tarsin for the original translation.
