MAST STARS TO WATCH 2011

BRUNO MARS A bit of a cheat given that he's already had an international smash hit with his single, Just the Way You Are. Still, we're going to nail our colours to the mast and predict that Bruno Mars will be anything but a one-hit wonder.

WILLOW As if to prove talent and star quality are genetic, 10-year-old Willow (daughter of Will and Jada Pinkett) Smith became the youngest solo artist to make the US charts when her single Whip My Hair peaked at number 11 in early November 2010. Jay-Z, who signed her to his Roc Nation label, recently said "she's an extraordinary talent".

Peter Gene Hernandez (born October 8, 1985), better known by his stage name Bruno Mars, is an American singer-songwriter and music producer. Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii by a family of musicians, Mars began making music at a young age. After performing in various musical venues in his hometown throughout his childhood, he decided to pursue a musical career. He has been nominated for seven Grammys at the 53rd Grammy Awards, which will be held on February 13, 2011. Not only is he a hugely talented performer, he's also part of the highly in-demand production/song writing team The Smeezingtons, responsible for hits including Flo Rida's Right Round, K'NAAN's international number one Fifa World Cup song Wavin' Flag, plus Cee-Lo's huge global hit F**k You. He became recognized as a solo artist after lending his vocals and co-writing the hooks for the songs "Nothin' on you" by B.o.B, and "Billionaire" by Travis McCoy. In October 2010, he released his debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans. Anchored by the singles "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade", the album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200.His debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, is released in the UK on January 24, 2011. Willow Camille Reign Smith (born October 31, 2000), who has released a recording as Willow, is an American child actress and singer who is the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. She made her acting debut in 2007 in the film I Am Legend and later appeared in Kit Kittredge: An American Girl alongside Abigail Breslin. She received a Young Artist Award for her performance. Apart from her acting she launched a music career in the fall of 2010 with the release of her single "Whip My Hair" and signing to Jay-Z's record label Roc Nation. The single peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Smith one of the youngest solo artists in history to do so. Essex born Jessica Cornish burst onto the scene in November 2010 in a flurry of excitement surrounding tracks Do It like a Dude and Price Tag. The 22 year old singer wrote poetry as a child and began her career on the stage with a role in the West End production of Whistle down the Wind. A trip to study musical theatre at the celebrated Brit School led to her first record deal with Gut Records and early interest from R 'n' B circles in the United States. Jessie suffered health problems throughout her early career and a minor stroke temporarily halted her career at the age of 18. Undeterred, the singer returned with renewed focus, finding success as a songwriter for Chris Brown, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake, who has hailed Cornish as "the best singer in the world right now". A further writing credit on the Miley Cyrus hit "Party in the USA" followed before current label Island encouraged the singer to keep Do It Like A Dude to herself, instead of offering it to Rihanna, as she had first planned. Performances on 1Xtra's MistaJam show and Later... with Jools Holland soon brought the artiste to a wider public consciousness, leading to a host of sold out London shows and media buzz.

JESSIE J British females have taken the world by storm in the last few years but for all Leona Lewis' technical ability, Lily Allen's feistiness, and Amy Winehouse's retro soul; we've yet to come up with a 24-carat diva able to compete with the likes of Beyoncé or Christina Aguilera..

It's the award ceremony that can sometimes pave the way for the big Oscar winners. So Natalie Portman and Colin Firth could well be on track to win an Academy Award next month after taking the top honours at the Golden Globe last night. Portman was named best actress for Black Swan while Firth was awarded best actor for his portrayal of King George VI in The King's Speech. Pregnant Portman thanked her parents and fiancé Benjamin Millepied as she made her acceptance speech for her trophy, which honoured her portrayal of a tortured ballerina in the critically acclaimed movie. Firth, 50, who beat off stiff competition from Jesse Eisenberg, James Franco, Mark Wahlberg and Ryan Gosling, thanked his 'supernaturally talented fellow cast members', especially Helena Bonham, the ‘no nonsense Queen’.

MAST 53

rd GRAMMYS

NOMINATION

Grammy awards are truly peer honours, awarded by and to artists and technical professionals for artistic or technical achievement, not sales or chart positions. Eminem is the leading contender for the 53rd Grammy Awards in Sunday February 13. With 10 nominations including album of the year at Nominations Concert from Club Nokia in Los Angeles and aired live on CBS that featured performances by nominees such as Mars, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Train and Miranda Lambert. The nominations cap a solid comeback for Eminem - real name Marshall Mathers III - who spent the past few years struggling with drug problems.

The 38-year-old rapper returned with the album Relapse in 2009, before releasing the follow-up Recovery. The rapper is up for a string of top nods including Album of the Year for Recovery and Best Record and Song for Love the Way You Lie, his collaboration with Rihanna.

Hawaiian born singer Bruno Mars, who performed twice during the nominations concert, notched up seven nominations. Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, and country Group Antebellum all netted six.

The coveted album of the year sees him up against Arcade Fire, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, while his competition for Song of the Year includes Miranda Lambert and Cee Lo Green. However, despite his 10 nods, Eminem can only scoop a maximum of nine trophies - in the Best Rap Song category, Love the Way You Lie and his solo track Not Afraid are both nominated. Eminem won two prizes at the American Music Awards in 2010.

Perry received a string of top honours, she'll face chart rival Lady Gaga in categories including Album of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals and Best Pop Vocal Album. Miranda Lambert dominates the country award categories, while Beyonce and Cee Lo Green are also celebrating after receiving multiple nominations. A surprise nod comes in the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance section - the late Michael Jackson is nominated for his track This Is It, which faces Michael Buble, Adam Lambert, Bruno Mars and John Mayer. Solomon Burke, the larger-than-life soul legend who died in October, received a Grammy nomination for his final album. Burke was nominated in the contemporary blues category for "Nothing's Impossible," which was released in April, coinciding with his 70th birthday. The only other Grammy win of his five-decade career was in this category in 2003 with "Don't Give Up On Me."

UK acts including Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons and Susan Boyle were recognized. Susan Boyle - who topped the album charts in the UK and the US twice in the past 12 months - will take on Katy Perry and Lady Gaga in the pop vocal album category. The Scots singer said: "Up against wonderful artists like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, I don't expect to win for a moment but how fantastic just to be recognized like this with a nomination on my first album." It was a strong showing for UK acts, with folk band Mumford and Sons and Brit Award winner Florence Welch up against Canadian teenager Justin Bieber and rapper Drake for best newcomer. A Roux and Goldfrapp are both in the shortlist for best dance recording and electronic/dance album. This category, is often dominated by UK artists, also features veterans Chemical Brothers and Groove Armada.

He has notched up an impressive four nominations for his work with Eminem and Rihanna, B.o.B and Paramore's Hayley Williams. In the vocal performance category, Michael Jackson has picked up a posthumous nomination for This Is It. The evening's biggest snub may have belonged to Ke$ha, though the singer had a top-selling debut and several hit songs, she was not nominated for any awards. Grammy Awards will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on 13 February where Prizes in 109 musical categories will be handed out at a star studded ceremony.

CLASSICS SUPERSTAR AMITABH BACHCHAN

Amitabh Bachchan was born on October 11, 1942 in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh. Big B as popularly referred to is to date the most popular man in India. Arguably India's greatest ever superstar. The trademark deep baritone voice, the tall, brooding persona, and intense eyes, made Amitabh Bachchan the ideal "Angry Young Man" in the 1970s, thereby changing the face of Hindi cinema. The son of poet Harivansh Rai and Teji Bachchan, brother to Ajitabh. After completing his education at Sherwood College, Nainital, and Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, he moved to Calcutta to work for shipping firm Shaw and Wallace. He moved to Bombay to pursue a career in the film industry. The lanky, dark, and intensely brooding persona did not go down well with directors who were looking for wise-cracking, fair, lover boys - the trademark of the Indian hero of the 60s. He made his debut in Saat Hindustani, Bachchan struggled through many roles and was relegated at times to doing voice-overs and in one instance playing a deaf-mute (the directors fearing his deep baritone voice could overshadow the other actors). He got his big break in Zanjeer

His breakthrough came with Zanjeer (the Chain) in 1973 playing opposite his future wife Jaya Bhaduri. On 3 June 1973, he married Jaya The couple have two children: Shweta Bachchan-Nanda and Abhishek Bachchan, who is also an actor.

with a persona apt for the 1970s, capturing the resentment of underemployed youth and the increasing cult of violence. Bachchan recreated the image of the Hindi film hero with major hits like Deewar, Sholay, Trishul, Don, Kala Patthar, and Shakti. Adapting former screen idol Dilip Kumar's mannerisms and adding his own flamboyance, he popularized the violent melodrama. He proved that he had an equal flair for tragedies (Deewar, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, and Shakti) and comedies (Chupke Chupke, Don, Naseeb, Amar Akbar Anthony). His most memorable performance was as the renegade against a harsh society in Deewar. At the height of his popularity on 26 July 1982, while filming Coolie in the University Campus in Bangalore, Bachchan suffered a near fatal intestinal injury during the filming of a fight scene.Hundreds prayed for his recovery at the

Breach Candy hospital, underscoring his megastar status. After Amar Akbar Anthony - he played similar "masala" roles, movies that required action, comedy, tragedy, and romance in one character. Bachchan was dubbed the Superstar, taking over that title from Rajesh Khanna, something he hung on to until the mid 1980s when the floor widened after his temporary departure.

Promoting India’s version of “Who wants to be a Millionaire”

In 1979, for the first time his song was used as one of the tracks in the film, Mr. Natwarlal, starring opposite Rekha. He was nominated for Filmfare Best Actor & Best Male Playback Awards.

Astonishingly, he burst back with a double act: one, playing the stern patriarch (the kind against which he had rebelled in the 1970s but in a role suited to his gravelly voice), and secondly , reinventing himself as a brand that in turn, could market anything. He ventured into TV presenting the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire called "Kaun Banega Crorepati?" (2000). After a series of hits with Mohabbatein (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001) and Baghban (2003) and Khakee (2004), Big B was top of the world. In Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black (2005), Bachchan played the role of an aging teacher for a deaf-blind girl and which developed into a relationship. His performance was exceptional and won him his second National Film Award for Best Actor and fourth Filmfare Best Actor Award. His 2009 release Paa saw him playing his own son Abhishek Progeria-affected 13-year-old son, and won him his third National Film Award for Best Actor and fifth Filmfare Best Actor Award. Previously unseen footage of Amitabh at Sherwood College, Amitabh, standing second row, fourth right.

ALL TIME AMITABH CLASSICS

Bachchan has won numerous major awards in his career, including four National Film Awards, three of which are for Best Actor, and thirteen Filmfare Awards. He holds the record for most nominations of Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor at the Filmfare Awards. In 1979, he was nominated for Best Actor in Kaala Patthar and in 1980 for Raj Khosla film Dostana, starring opposite Shatrughan Sinha and Zeenat Aman. Dostana became the top grossing film of 1980. A 60 plus Bachchan is showing no signs of slowing down and proving the critics wrong. Amitabh Bachchan is now a greater icon than he was at the height of his popularity three decades ago. He is in demand for endorsements, advertisements and movie roles. There’s no stopping “this angry man”.

Rajasthan Royals co-owner Shilpa Shetty expressed relief at overcoming all the "constraints" the consortium faced and the timely clearance to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL)-4. The Bombay High Court last month cleared the Rajasthan Royals to play in the IPL after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) terminated the franchise for lack of transparency in their shareholding pattern. "We have had many constraints in the run up to the auctions.” The team purchased New Zealand batsman Taylor for a whopping $1 million and picked up veteran Indian batsman Dravid for $500,000. The franchise retained South African Botha for $950,000

Kings XI Punjab co-owner Preity Zinta said she was disappointed to lose all-rounder Irfan Pathan but glad to buy former Australian wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist in the first session of auction for the fourth leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on January 8. Kings XI Punjab went all out to buy their former player Pathan but faced a fierce fight from Delhi Daredevils. Punjab was in the bidding till $1.8 million before Daredevils grabbed him for $1.9 million. "Irfan is a wonderful player. He is a great swing bowler and a good batsman. He has a good temperament. So, we are naturally disappointed, you don't get every player you want to buy," Preity said.

MAST ROYAL WEDDING

FRIDAY 29TH APRIL 2011

Prince William and fiancée Kate Middleton will have the eyes of the world on them on Friday April 29 when they tie the knot at Westminster Abbey on a day, which has been designated an official public holiday. The Bride will depart from Buckingham Palace by car to Westminster Abbey along a route including the Mall, Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and Parliament Square for the 11.00 am ceremony. Dean of Westminster the Very Revd. Dr John Hall will conduct the service. The Archbishop of Canterbury will marry Prince William and Miss Middleton and the Bishop of London, the Rt Reverend Richard Chartres, will give the address. The couple, now married, will return along a similar route to the one Kate took to the service in a carriage procession to Buckingham Palace. At the Palace the Queen will hold a buffet reception for the couple and guests drawn from the congregation representing the newlywed’s official and private lives. Later that evening Prince Charles will host a private dinner and dance, at Buckingham Palace for the couple and their close friends and family. The pair who announced their engagement in November nine years after meeting as students at St Andrews University had reportedly hired a helicopter to take them to a remote lake on the slopes of Mount Kenya, where Prince William proposed 12.000ft above sea level. Thoughtful William gave Kate Middleton his mother’s cherished engagement ring so Diana would be a special part of his happiest day. The 18 carat oval blue sapphire, surrounded by 14 small diamonds in a cluster setting, was bought by Prince Charles in the 80’s for Diana from royal jewelers Garrard. The couple are said to be “completely over the moon” after getting the spring wedding they wanted in a venue of their choice for its staggering beauty” and 1000 year royal history. They are keen on making the day a national celebration. Britain will enjoy a public holiday bonanza as millions get an extra day off to celebrate. Easter falls on the weekend before, and May Day holiday on the following Monday, it means many people will have two four-day weekends in a row……Q

ELIGIBLE HEIRS

Prince Harry - With Prince William having set a date with Kate, the younger son of the Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales, is now the best chance for aspiring princesses. Being third in line to the throne, Harry is one very eligible heir. And the good news for anyone with a desire to become a princess is that if he’s anything like his brother he’s quite partial to commoners. His on-off relationship with Chelsy Davy appears to be off again. Andrea Casiraghi - The most glamorous royal in our list, Andrea Albert Pierre Casiraghi is the eldest child of Princess Caroline of Monaco and has Hollywood ‘royalty’ in his blood too courtesy of glamorous grandmother Grace Kelly. Hardly surprising then that the 26-year-old regularly appears in the world’s “most beautiful people” and “hottest young royals” lists.

Sam Branson - His father is Richard Branson, the 212th richest person in the world according to Forbes' 2010 list of billionaires, with an estimated net worth of approximately £2.97 billion. All of which makes this blonde-haired, blue-eyed boy with model good looks seriously hot property. And the good news is that he’s back on the market having been dumped by Isabella AnstrutherGough-Calthorpe after a four-year relationship. Albert von Thurn und Taxis - this German prince may not be the youngest on our list of eligible heirs, he’s certainly the youngest one with his hands already on the cash. Now 24, he inherited his $2.2 billion (about £1.4bn) fortune when he turned 18. His 30,000 hectares of woodland in Germany is one of the largest forests in Europe. He lives in a family castle, Schloss Emmeram, with his mother and older sister.

Prince Azim of Brunei - For years his father was heralded as the richest man in the world on Forbes' list, but now his fortune is divided up between his 12 children. One of the youngest is Prince Azim, who is worth an estimated $40 billion dollars (around £25bn). Dubbed the billionaire playboy prince he’s perhaps the bestknown of the Brunei royal family and a paparazzi favourite. The 28-year-old stands fourth in line to the Brunei throne.

Brandon Green - the 18-year-old son of retail tycoon Sir Phillip Green, the richest and most flamboyant man in British retail, worth a cool £3.5 billion, young Brandon is already used to the good life. Daddy splashed out a whopping £4 million just to make sure his son’s three-day Bar Mitzvah was one party to remember. Brandon is based in Monaco with his sister Chloe and South African mother Tina.

Alejandro Santo Domingo - this business-savvy ColombianAmerican heir is the son of Colombian beer billionaire Julio Mario Santo Domingo, who Forbes estimates is worth a cool $5.7 billion (about £3.6bn). Now 33, Harvardeducated Alejandro was put at the helm of the family’s Bogotá-based Bavaria brewery business when he was just 23. In five years he increased pre-tax earnings from $185 million to a whopping $840 million (about £540m).

Antoine Arnault - His father Bernard Arnault, worth a cool $27.5 billion (about £17.5bn) according to Forbes, is, as all fashionistas will know, the man behind the Louis Vuitton brand. Antoine is one very eligible heir with a direct line to luxury brands like Christian Dior, Fendi and Moet & Chandon. Having held the role of communications director at Louis Vuitton, Antoine is dubbed the mogul-in-training.

Harry Morton - Son of the Hard Rock Café owner Peter Morton and grandson of the steakhouse legend Arnie Morton, Harry is heir to a fortune in the region of $700 million. He owns the Pink Taco restaurant chain, the 29-year-old looks set to make that sum grow even more. His mother is British model Pauline Stone.

THE KING’S SPEECH NOMINATED FOR 12 OSCARS British historical drama "The King's Speech" won the most Oscar nominations with 12 nods for the film industry's top honours, ahead of "True Grit", with 10. "The King's Speech", starring Colin Firth as the stammering King George VI, was a relative latecomer to the Oscars race, and was a disappointment at the Golden Globe award with only one award for best actor. Colin Firth, winner of best actor trophy at the Globes for the film, is widely tipped to win an Oscar for his performance at next month's show. Tom Hooper, director of "The King's Speech", is up for best director. I guess Americans forget that Barrack has strong Kenyan roots. Kenyans and the British come a long way! King George VI died on 06.02.1952 when Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh were on their honeymoon and staying at that time in Treetops Nyeri, Kenya and immediately upon his death she automatically became the Queen. There is a saying about Treetops that it is where "A young girl went up a Princess and came down a Queen" It was also the ideal location (Kenya) for the young Prince William to propose....so does that now make sense why the Obamas went for a British design…ha ha ha .ciao!

US talk show host Oprah Winfrey has revealed on air that she has discovered a half-sister she never knew about she is Patricia from Wisconsin. Winfrey says she was nine years old and living with her father when her mother Vernita Lee had the daughter and gave her up for adoption. Winfrey was born into poverty to a single mother in rural Mississippi but raised in an inner-city neighbourhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. FASHION LEHENGA CHOLI

Of all the ethnic Indian women attires, the most eye-catching is the lehenga choli. Though traditionally worn by the women folk in the rural belts of Indian states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, the lehenga choli is also popular as bridal attire in the urban parts of India. It is also known as Ghagra Choli. It is matched with a short or waist length blouse, known as the choli, and a dupatta.

Though lehenga is essentially a bridal dress, people do wear it during normal parties and festivities. In this case, the design of the lehenga varies and it is not heavily embellished. Lehenga is worn by women of all age-groups, when donned by young girls; the skirt may be matched with a halter-neck blouse or a backless choli. The design, colour and embroidery of the Ghagra depend on occasions.

ZANZIBAR IS A SEMI-AUTONOMOUS ARCHIPELAGO ON THE EAST AFRICAN COAST, OFF TANZANIA CONSISTING OF ZANZIBAR ISLAND, PEMBA ISLAND & MANY SMALLER ISLANDS. ZANZIBAR WAS THE LOCATION OF THE WORLD’S SHORTEST WAR, IN 1896 THE SULTANATE SURRENDERED TO THE BRITISH ARMY AFTER 38 MINUTES.

Few places have the romantic allure of the "Spice Islands" of Zanzibar, a slumbering lush paradise where green cloves, bread leaf, rice, cinnamon and coconuts still grow wild today.

THE ZANZIBAR CASTLE

The old Stone Town of Zanzibar is a fascinating warren of narrow streets, overhanging balconies and huge, intricately carved wooden doors. The bustling Suk (bazaar), where traders bargain excitedly, is full of the pungent perfume of exotic spices. . This is the town where the famous 19th century explorers such as Livingstone, Stanley, Burton, Speke and Grant began their fateful journeys into the 'dark' interior. Outside the town there are many places of historic interest. SCULPTURES DEPICTING HOW SLAVES WERE HELD.

Hidden around Zanzibar's idyllic coves or along its stunning beaches are some excellent hotels and further afield, over 50 islands litter the warm tranquil waters of the Indian Ocean, with golden sands, swaying palms and tiny rustic retreats.

Bishop Edward Steer was allowed to build the church by the Sultan Barghash; it was finished in 1877 and inside you can see the cross made of wood from tree where Dr. David Livingstone’s heart was buried after his death in Chitambo (Zambia) in 1874.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY

BATOOK PANDYA, MBE, DL, MA (HONS) Born in 1945 in Nairobi, Kenya, Batook Pandya who is of Indian ethnic origin came to England at the age of 17 years old in 1963. His first post was with Walt Disney Productions in the publicity department. He went on to study for his ‘A’ Levels and achieve further qualifications in accounts and photography. Batook later joined British Aerospace as a trainee where he worked for 10 years on their Concorde Project and qualified as an aircraft technician. He left to join British Caledonian Airways (later to become British Airways) as a Ground Engineer. Having dedicated many years of work to industry, Batook decided he wanted to give something back to the community. He was particularly interested in tackling racism. He was fortunate enough to be offered the post of Project Manager for S.A.R.I. (Support Against Racist Incidents), a unique voluntary organization that supports people through the trauma of racial harassment.

Batook is seen as a figure-head and a link between agencies and Bristol’s Black and Minority Ethnic community. Batook is unwavering in his belief that good anti-racist practice in Britain relies on the involvement and commitment of all communities and agencies, rather than focusing exclusively on the ethnic minorities. S.A.R.I.’s user profile makes it amply clear that racism is a vice that debases an entire society rather than only its victims. This leads Batook to believe that racists need as much help as those they taunt. He is also a pro-active member of various committees and forums in and around Bristol, working with representatives from various statutory, voluntary and corporate agencies.

Batook was awarded an MBE in 2000, for his services to the improvement of race relations in Britain. This honour, along with S.A.R.I. winning the Charity Awards 2001 for the Social Care, Welfare and Religion category – is an acknowledgement of the fact that Batook’s work through S.A.R.I. is acknowledged nationally, and that his working practice is exemplary to the entire nation. In February 2002, Batook was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of the City and County of Bristol. In June 2005, S.A.R.I. Management Committee was given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services. In July 2009, Batook was awarded an Honorary Degree Master of Arts for his selflessly serving the communities by the University of Bristol to mark its centenary year.

He is a member of both Bristol and South Gloucestershire Independent Advisory Group. The ultimate goal of Batook’s work both inside and outside of S.A.R.I. is to create a society in which racism, along with all other forms of discrimination, is perceived as unjust and undesirable. A society in which the sense of right and wrong is so ingrained that there is no need for organizations like S.A.R.I. any more. COMMUNITY AT HEART SPECIAL REPORT

S.A.R.I SUPPORT AGAINST RACIAL INCIDENTS .

Established in 1988, S.A.R.I. has been operational since 1991. It was the brainchild of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) housing provider United Housing Association. The victims of racism in Bristol received no co-ordinated response or specialist support from agencies. A steering group with the aim of remedying this situation was set up in 1988. It consisted of agencies such as Bristol Racial Equality Council, Bristol City Council’s Housing Department and Inner-city Mental Health Team who worked in consultation with victims of racial harassment and community leaders. They decided to set up a black-led, independent organisation with the aim of offering dedicated support for victims of racist incidents and encouraging agencies to respond better, as well as gaining the trust and support of local BME communities. A management committee was formed to secure the funding needed to achieve this aim, and with the support of a Home Office Safer Cities Grant, S.A.R.I. was established. SARI became fully operational in 1991 achieving funding to employ 2½ people, a project manager, a caseworker and a part time administrator. In that first year 44 cases were referred to us. Today SARI is accepted as a pioneering model for undertaking racial harassment work. Supporting victims remains their specific mandate. They have expanded their area of operation from Bristol to cover Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. SARI has developed a broader action strategy which encompasses educational work, preventative work, and multi-agency work to combat social exclusion and discrimination. Today with over 20 staff and an annual caseload of almost 400.

S.A.R.I. continues to be an autonomous user-led charity. It endeavours to ensure that the staff and management committee reflects diverse communities they serve and that they demonstrate a clear understanding of racial harassment and its implications. They work consistently to improve the interaction between them and other agencies involved in fight against racism. SARI provides casework service for free and is a nonprofit, non-political and non-campaigning organization. Tackling racial harassment is the cornerstone of the work that SARI does. Terminology referring to racial harassment seeks to ensure that the views of the victim are considered.

DIRECTOR S.A.R.I. BATOOK PANDYA MBE

S.A.R.I. defines racially motivated action as: A physical, written or psychological attack on an individual or group or their property, by another person or group of people for which there is no reasonable explanation other than their race, culture, religion, ethnic origin or personal relationship with an ethnic minority person, where this is the view of the person receiving the report or the person reporting it. The most important of all current definitions was introduced as a result of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry; it re-defined the term racist incident and changed the way organisations perceive reports of racial harassment. The definition is: A racist incident is any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person. A racist incident can be overt or covert, blatant or subtle. The categorisation of the incidents reflects the variety of ways in which people can be harassed or abused from and by all sections of society. With the exception of murder, S.A.R.I. has dealt with all categories of incidents. Racial harassment affects the individual in every area of their life, work, school and home. People who experience harassment may feel guilty, humiliated and too embarrassed to complain. Stress may lead to emotional symptoms such as a loss of self-confidence and self-esteem. The physical symptoms include loss of sleep, headaches. Further more serious physical and mental health problems may develop, not only for the recipient, but also for the family.

sitting members of parliament, councilors, politicians, senior representatives of the service organizations, banking institution and local business community. I believe ours is the only event that is attended by people of all faiths and race. Q: Tell me something about the Nagar Kirtan (Sikh Awareness March). M: Nagar Kirtan is a Punjabi term which literally means “neighborhood Kirtan”. Nagar means village or neighborhood and Kirtan is a term describing the singing of Shabads (Divine Hymns). This is very important for the Sikh community as by organizing this event in such a large scale we are creating awareness in the community, introducing our culture to the other faiths and communities so we can all understand each other better and live as one community in peace and harmony. Q: What do you think the response of the other communities is towards the Sikhs at such functions? M: I believe good, well, things are much better than they were in the past, the Muslims from Punjab, are closer to us than the gujrati who tend to shy away, my message to all communities, “let us work together, share ideas, attend each other’s celebrations and educate our children for the need to respect each other’s faith and culture. Perhaps togetherness here will send signals to our countries of origin. Q: why do we have four Sikh temples in Bristol yet the community is not that large, is it because of different school of thought like the Muslims M: Not really, in Sikhism we have one school of thought, I want to believe that it is because we do not have one that is big enough to cater for the whole community, but going deeper, it is also due to the different backgrounds of people (using a more polite word), a system that we as Sikhs deny is in existence but still prevails, hence the separation. Q Your events are very well attended by top government and civic organizations and held at top class hotels, is it intentional M: Yes it is, I am a strong believer of being the best and by introducing my community to such venues and having them brush shoulders with people from the high offices helps them get used to such environments and make them feel that they too can achieve what others have achieved with hard work and passion. Q: Finally what is your message to the community? M: I am glad that all communities are striving to do well, let us keep in touch with each other, try to assist those who need help irrespective of color, creed or religion.

Born in Rawalpindi India (now in Pakistan), Mohindra arrived in Bristol in 1962 for further education. After qualifying as a civil structural engineer he practiced in the engineering field for 14 years before establishing his private business, Davenport International limited, dealing in exports of hides and skins. Married to Simran (Simi) Chaudhry, project manager of Awaz Utaoh, they have a daughter and a son. Mohindra has been very active in community projects in the South West organizing community events, dinners, and awareness processions and assisting in housing projects. I caught up with Mohindra at the Royal Marriot for cup of coffee that lasted for two days, simply because he has so much to say that we decided to carry on the next day. He recalls his early days in Bristol, “those days when I got onto the bus, kids would stare at me, all eyes on my turban”, he went on, “when we had curry we had to brush our teeth three or four times to avoid the curry breath and cooked curry with all windows shut to avoid irritating the neighbors, but slowly we invited our close friends and neighbors to taste our food which they loved, today Britain is afloat with curry houses everywhere”. Q. When was the Punjabi International Forum launched? M: Punjabi Forum has been there for over ten years organizing Sikh community events and dinners, our first function was 12 years ago, and with a skeleton infrastructure the event had an attendance of about 25 people. Today we have an attendance of close to 300 with many more missing out as our venues cannot accommodate more than that. Our guests come from a cross section of the community including the Rt. IMRAN AHMED, Director, Bristol Blue Customs comes from a family of business entrepreneurs in the South West. Our business correspondent had a one to one chat with Imran at his workshop in Kingswood, Bristol. Q. What inspired you to start Bristol Blue? I. I have always been car crazy; I got the idea after taking my car to be done at another garage. The change inspired me to start my own in the South West. I found that this region needed such a facility and with Bristol Blue colors in effect in 2011 as required by the Bristol City Council for all Taxis in Bristol, I knew this is it, I can do it. Q. Are you an authorized garage of color change for Taxis? I. Yes I am I can certify that the color change is as per set standard of the Bristol City Council, in fact I am working closely with the council on this. I am also the main fitter for Peugeot and Porsche, as you see here we are wrapping a Peugeot RCM from blue to fuscha pink. These are for special order cars and we are the contracted fitters in the region. Q. What’s your specialty? I. We specialize in white conversions for Range Rovers and Porsches. Q. What are the costs implications? I. The actual product is cheaper than re-spraying, it is fully removable, and will protect original factory paint underneath. Q. What are the popular colors? I. Matt Black, White, Carbon Fibre & Chrome, we have just wrapped a chrome Ferrari which you can view on our website. Q.What is your main clients besides Taxis? I. We cater for all clients from the young drivers to footballers and celebrities, whoever wants a sleek look to their machine. Q. What product do you use to wrap cars? I. This is a special vinyl that as I mentioned earlier does not harm the original paint and transforms cars in any color of your choice. Q. How long have you been in operation? I. A TRIBUTE DADDY COOL

06-10-49 30-12-2010

RIP

Bobby Farrell, the lead singer of the chart topping 70’s group Boney M was found dead in his hotel room in St Petersburg Russia on December 30th 2010 where he was on tour. He was 61. The original Boney M which was based in Germany disbanded in 1986. Alphonso “Bobby” Farrell left his home on the Caribbean Island of Aruba aged 15 to work as a sailor later drifting to Norway & Germany as a DJ. He was chosen in 1974 to front Boney M, a group put together by German singer/songwriter Frank Farian who did much of the recorded singing. Boney M had 38 top 10 hits including 15 number ones in Germany. The group’s version of By The Rivers Of Babylon sold over 2million copies in Britain in 1978 and staying at the No. spot for five weeks.

I met Bobby when Boney M were on tour in Kenya. Then fresh from their performance in the Soviet Union at the invitation of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, Boney M were the first western group to perform in the communist state to an audience of about 3000 Russians in Red Square. Walking the streets of Nairobi Bobby was always at ease and amazed at the friendliness of Kenyans. I remember him saying,” what a difference it is here, compared to the Soviet Union people are at ease, adding, “in the Soviet Union the city came to a halt when Boney M landed in the country”. RIP, Daddy Cool…..Q

NEWS PICTORIAL

"Let me say right away to British Muslims that I acknowledge that there is a minority of people that try to justify their criminal conduct and activity by suggesting that it is sanctioned by their faith," she said, adding: "It is a problem that we must confront and defeat. But that problem should not lead to unfounded suspicions of all Muslims."

In a speech designed to stem "the rising tide of anti-religious bigotry", Baroness Warsi - the first Muslim woman to attend Cabinet - warned that Islamophobia was seen by many Britons as normal and uncontroversial."So when people get on the Tube and see a bearded Muslim, they think 'terrorist'; when they hear 'Halal', they think 'That sounds like contaminated food'; and when they walk past a woman wearing a veil, they think automatically 'That woman's oppressed'. And what's particularly worrying is that this can lead down the slippery slope to violence." Speaking at Leicester University, to warn against the tendency to divide Muslims between "moderates" and "extremists", which she said could fuel misunderstanding and intolerance.
