Islamic New Year 1432 H./2010 GREETINGS & HAPPY ISLAMIC NEW YEAR TO ALL MUSLIMS DECEMBER 7TH 2010

22 December 1666 – 7 October 1708

GREETINGS TO THE SIKH COMMUNITY ON THE BIRTHDAY OF GURU GOVIND SINGH (Punjabi: ਗੁਰੂ ਗੋਬ ਿੰ ਦ ਬ ਿੰ ਘ)

(Hindi: गुरू गोब द िं स घ िं He was the tenth Guru of Sikhism. He was born in Patna, Bihar in India and became a Guru on 11 November 1675, at the age of nine years, succeeding his father Guru Tegh Bahadur. He was the leader of the Sikh faith, a warrior, a poet, and a philosopher. In the Sikh society, Guru Gobind Singh is considered a perfect example of manhood.

The Islamic New Year (Arabic: ‫ ال هجري ة ال سنة رأس‬Ras as-Sana al-Hijreya) is the day that marks the beginning of a new Islamic calendar year, and is the day on which the year count is incremented. The first day of the year is observed on the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar. Since the Islamic year is 11 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian year, the Islamic new year does not come on the same day of the Gregorian calendar every year.

MAST FASHIONS

Of all the ethnic Indian women attires, the most eye-catching one, perhaps, is the lehenga choli. Though traditionally worn by the women folk in the rural belts of Indian states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, the lehenga choli is also popular as bridal attire in the urban parts of India. It is also known by the name of Ghagra Choli. The typical Indian bridal lehenga is of red color and is heavily embroidered with golden thread or zari. It is teemed with a short or waist length blouse, known as the choli, and a dupatta.

Though lehenga is essentially a bridal dress, it does not mean that people cannot wear it during normal parties and festivities. In this case, the design of the lehenga varies and it may not be so heavily embellished. lehenga is also worn by women of all age-groups. when donned by young girls, the skirt may be matched with a halter-neck blouse or a backless choli. The design, color and embroidery of the ghagra depends on occasions.

A ROYAL ENGAGEMENT ON THE SLOPES OF MOUNT KENYA THOUGHTFUL Prince William gave Kate Middleton his mother's cherished engagement ring so Diana would be a special part of his happiest day. The couple had reportedly hired a helicopter to take them to a remote lake on the slopes of Mount Kenya, where William proposed 12,000ft above sea level. Kate seemed overwhelmed with joy as she showed off the ring, which Di continued to wear after splitting with Charles until just before her death. Kate, 28, wore the sapphire and diamond band as the couple faced the world for the first time on TV on Tuesday 16th Nov 2010 as bride and groom-to-be. And as jubilant royal fans soaked up the news they had waited years for, a clearly emotional Prince explained: "As you may have recognized, it's my mother's engagement ring. William, second in line to the throne, will marry in London on the 29th of April 2011 at West Minister Cathedral and live in north Wales, where he is serving with the RAF.

The 18 carat oval blue sapphire, surrounded by 14 small diamonds in a cluster setting, was bought by Prince Charles in the 80’s for Diana from royal jewelers Garrard.

It was my way of making sure my mother didn't miss out on today and the excitement and the fact we're going to spend the rest of our lives together."

The Queen said she was “absolutely delighted for both Prince William and Kate. Prime Minister David Cameron said the engagement marked, “a great day for our country” and wished the couple a long & happy life. Prince William and Kate Middleton both started out on the same history of art course at St. Andrews in 2001, though William later switched to geography. They shared accommodation with friends for several years. Kate, who is six months older than William, was credited with persuading the prince to stay on as he struggled to adjust to university life during his first year. Kate is the eldest child of businessman Michael Middleton and former air hostess Carol. She was raised in a modern five-bedroom detached house in the Berkshire village of Buckle bury and her family, who are self-made millionaires, run a mail order toy and party goods company.

In a remote lake on the slopes of Mount Kenya in the Lewa Wildlife Conversancy, at 12,000ft above sea level, the Prince proposed. Royal commentator Margaret Holder said she thought the marriage would give William the warm, cosy family life he wanted.

The announcement of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement comes to us all in Kenya and indeed around the world as the most wonderful and refreshing news," Ian Craig and his wife Jane said in a statement sent to AFP. "On behalf of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy together with Prince William’s many Kenyan friends we wish to send our warmest congratulations to him and Kate on this most special occasion," the statement added. "We have all been wishing for this day and for them to have chosen to make their decision to spend the rest of their lives together whilst in- Africa amongst the elephants and rhinos at Lewa for which Prince William has been such an Ambassador makes this all the more special for Kenya and its people."

The couple, both 28, met at St Andrews University, Fife.

NAVRATRI CELEBRATIONS IN THE SOUTH WEST

Navratri, Navaratri, or Navarathri is a Hindu festival of worship of Shakti and dance & festivities. The word Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit, Nava meaning nine and Ratri meaning nights. Of the 9 days with three days each are devoted to worship of Maa Durga, the Goddess of Valor, Ma Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Maa Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge. During the nine days of Navratri, feasting and fasting take precedence over all normal daily activities amongst the Hindus. Evenings give rise to the religious dances in order to worship Goddess Durga Maa. The Bristol Hindu Temple led by chairman Rasik Patel and Panditji Kamlesh Vyas held their annual Navratri festivities at the Patchway Community Centre. Hindus observe ten days of ceremonies, rituals, fasts and feasts in honor of the supreme mother goddess. It begins with the fast of “Navaratri”, and ends with the festivities of “Dusshera” PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAHEE PERVEEN

EID UL ADHA BRISTOL

Eid al-Adha ‫‘ األ ضحى ع يد‬Īdu l-’Adhā or "Eid-u'z-Zuha" Festival of Sacrifice or Greater Eid is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Isma'il (Ishmael )as an act of obedience to ALLAH, but instead was able to sacrifice a ram by ALLAH’s command.

Unlike the Eid ul Fitr prayers and celebrations which were celebrated by all Muslims on the same day, the Eid al Adha prayers and celebrations were held on Tuesday and Wednesday, thus dividing the community once again. We tried to talk to the different mosques but were not quite convinced as to why there was a division on a celebration that universally should have been observed on the day that it should have been.

MAST COMMUNITY AT HEART SPECIAL REPORT

COUNCIL OF BRISTOL MOSQUES The council of Bristol Mosques or CBM is an umbrella organization established by the mosques in the city of Bristol. Our community affairs correspondent went to talk to Chairman Arif Khan and member Hafiz Zaheer Shabbir. Q. What is the objective of CBM? CBM. Our main objective is to bring communities together. With the number of Mosques in Bristol and the South West growing it is important for us to have a common platform; we have common beliefs, culture and having one voice helps engage further with the other faiths and communities. CBM is the first of its kind in the South West with mosques from different schools of thought coming together, working in harmony for the best interest of the wider Muslim community. Q. What is your composition? CBM. Our membership is open to all, we have just being constituted 2 years ago and of the 11 mosques in Bristol, 6 are our members and we are confident we will not only have most of them join us but others in the region. Q. Give us a brief of some of the projects that you have been involved in. CBM. We have been involved in the NHS pilot programme 45-60 Health checks (mid-life) which was a big success. We have a mosque development worker who coordinates youth activities in all mosques. CBM is also actively involved with multi agency “building the bridge” programme and most of our committee members are already working closely with authorities, agencies and other organizations that give capacity to deal for the mosques. Q.How do you assist the common man? CBM. We request them to first speak to their relevant mosque and through their respective mosque we assist where possible. Q. What have you achieved since inception? CBM. We have jointly with Avon & Somerset Constabulary assisted in security at Bristol Airport. We have delivered workshops, “the Bristol safe Guarding Children Board”. CBM has assisted with seminars and courses of Imams for ESOL, British Culture Awareness Training and overall mosque management courses. CBM is also a member of Bristol Inter Faith Group and Bristol Multi-Faith Forum. Q. Finally, what has CBM as an umbrella body of mosques in the city done about the controversary of the sighting of the moon that heralds the start of Ramadhan and the celebrations of Eid? CBM. There was a forum that worked in partnership with various mosques on the issue of moon sighting. Bristol has seen different communities form community mosques, Somali, Bangla Deshi, Pakistani & Arab- these groups have associated themselves with other big organizations and traditionalist in their countries of origin, as a result they follow and observe these dates with their countrymen back home. Though some Imams take the view that we should begin fasting and celebrate Eid if we sight the moon in our local area i.e. if you live in Bristol, you observe these celebrations if you have sighted the moon here. This divides the community and we at CBM are searching for solutions where we as Muslims in this region can begin and end our Ramadhan together.

UK AMA PRESS LAUNCH The UK Asian Music Awards (UK AMA) is recognized as the only event that truly acknowledges and celebrates the diverse talent that is British Asian music. Since its humble beginnings in 2002, UK AMA has provided a platform to develop and promote music of Asian origin throughout the country and beyond. The event was the first to address the music and entertainment needs of the Asian community along with highlighting the growth and importance of Asian music within the mainstream and world music market. On Friday 26th of November organizers of the Lebara Mobile UK Asian Music Awards 2011, announced the start of the four month campaign of public voting and judging for the 15 categories which will honour and celebrate the best of British Asian Music. The event was hosted by BBC Radio 1 and BBC Asian Network presenter, Nihal. Co Host was singer and BBC One’s Waterloo Road actress, Karen David, at top London night spot Alto The star-studded bash saw the crème de la crème of the music industry come together with the likes of Raghav, Blitzkrieg, Panjabi MC and Bonafide. The evening started with news that following a successful partnership in 2010, international mobile services provider, Lebara Mobile has renewed its title sponsorship of the awards. Russell Atkinson, Managing Director, Lebara Mobile UK commented: “The Lebara Mobile UK Asian Music Awards play an important role in recognizing and celebrating the incredible talent that exists within the Asian community. We’re proud to be continuing our commitment to nurturing new talent and have exciting plans to ensure we give these role models an opportunity to shine.” After three amazing years at The Royal Festival Hall, the 2011 awards ceremony will take residence at one of the hottest music venues around, The Roundhouse in Camden. Having played host to such acclaimed artists such as Jay Z, Elton John, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix, the Roundhouse opens its doors to the Lebara Mobile UK Asian Music Awards on Thursday 10th March 2011. It was also confirmed that television channel B4U Music will be returning as media partner for the fourth year running. The Awards will also see renewed support from radio partner BBC Asian Network and online entertainment portal Desihits.com, both of which return for the second year, to provide special coverage in the lead up to the event. Speaking at the launch, Abs Shaid, CEO and founder of the UK AMA said, “We have a lot of plans for future, and this is just the start of the new look for 2011. We’ll make sure that everyone is kept up to speed with news as it happens; this first stage is about opening the Lebara Mobile UK Asian Music Awards to the public and getting them nominate their stars. Without their input we have no awards – it’s ‘artistes’ fans that create the stars, so we really need to know who they want to put forward! All they need to do is log on to the website and add their recommendations against each category.”

THE SPICE ISLAND OF ZANZIBAR

HEMEDI SHOKO

ZANZIBAR IS A SEMI-AUTONOMOUS ARCHIPELAGO ON THE EAST AFRICAN COAST, OFF TANZANIA CONSISTING OF ZANZIBAR ISLAND, PEMBA ISLAND & MANY SMALLER ISLANDS. ZANZIBAR WAS THE LOCATION OF THE WORLD’S SHORTEST WAR, IN 1896 THE SULTANATE SURRENDERED TO THE BRITISH ARMY AFTER 38 MINUTES.

Few places have the romantic allure of the "Spice Islands" of Zanzibar, a slumbering lush paradise where green cloves, bread leaf, rice, cinnamon and coconuts still grow wild today.

THE ZANZIBAR CASTLE

The old Stone Town of Zanzibar is a fascinating warren of narrow streets, overhanging balconies and huge, intricately carved wooden doors. The bustling Suk (bazaar), where traders bargain excitedly, is full of the pungent perfume of exotic spices. . This is the town where the famous 19th century explorers such as Livingstone, Stanley, Burton, Speke and Grant began their fateful journeys into the 'dark' interior. Outside the town there are many places of historic interest. SCULPTURES DEPICTING HOW SLAVES WERE HELD.

Hidden around Zanzibar's idyllic coves or along its stunning beaches are some excellent hotels and further afield, over 50 islands litter the warm tranquil waters of the Indian Ocean, with golden sands, swaying palms and tiny rustic retreats.

Bishop Edward Steer was allowed to build the church by the Sultan Barghash; it was finished in 1877 and inside you can see the cross made of wood from tree where Dr. David Livingstone’s heart was buried after his death in Chitambo (Zambia) in 1874.

EXOTIC ZANZIBAR

with HEMEDI SHOKO

The capital of Zanzibar, located on the island of Unguja, is Zanzibar City, and its historic centre, known as Stone Town, is a World Heritage Site.

On the beaches, resorts offer Zanzibari style accommodation and warm, friendly service. Standards overall tend to be good and relaxed and the famous Zanzibari hospitality is extended to all who embrace the culture and traditional values of the destination.

A PICTORIAL TOUR OF THE SULTAN’S PALACE

On the tour you will see remnants of the Islands exciting past which includes almost 200 years of Portuguese occupation and a long line of Oman Sultans from 1832 up to 1964, when a popular movement deposed the Sultan.

The death of the proBritish Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini on 25 August 1896 and the succession of Sultan Khalid bin Barghash of whom the British did not approve led to the Anglo-Zanzibar War. On the morning of 27 August 1896, ships of the Royal Navy destroyed the Beit al Hukum Palace. A cease fire was declared 38 minutes later, and to this day the bombardment stands as the shortest war in history.

SULTANATE’S GRAVEYARD

THE CELLS WHERE CAPTURED SLAVES WERE HELD FOR UPTO THREE DAYS BEFORE SHIPMENT BY ARAB TRADERS.

The islands gained independence from Britain in December 1963 as a constitutional monarchy. A month later, in the bloody Zanzibar Revolution, thousands of Arabs and Indians were killed in a genocide and thousands expelled. A Republic of Zanzibar and Pemba in a union with the mainland Tanganyika formed the Republic of Tanzania.

MAST BUSINESS IMRAN AHMED

IMRAN AHMED, Director, Bristol Blue Customs comes from a family of business entrepreneurs in the South West. Our business correspondent had a one to one chat with Imran at his workshop in Kingswood, Bristol. Q. What inspired you to start Bristol Blue? I. I have always been car crazy; I got the idea after taking my car to be done at another garage. The change inspired me to start my own in the South West. I found that this region needed such a facility and with Bristol Blue colors in effect in 2011 as required by the Bristol City Council for all Taxis in Bristol, I knew this is it, I can do it. Q. Are you an authorized garage of color change for Taxis? I. Yes I am I can certify that the color change is as per set standard of the Bristol City Council, in fact I am working closely with the council on this. I am also the main fitter for Peugeot and Porsche, as you see here we are wrapping a Peugeot RCM from blue to fuscha pink. These are for special order cars and we are the contracted fitters in the region. Q. What’s your specialty? I. We specialize in white conversions for Range Rovers and Porsches. Q. What are the costs implications? I. The actual product is cheaper than re-spraying, it is fully removable, and will protect original factory paint underneath. Q. What are the popular colors? I. Matt Black, White, Carbon Fibre & Chrome, we have just wrapped a chrome Ferrari which you can view on our website. Q.What is your main clients besides Taxis? I. We cater for all clients from the young drivers to footballers and celebrities, whoever wants a sleek look to their machine. Q. What product do you use to wrap cars? I. This is a special vinyl that as I mentioned earlier does not harm the original paint and transforms cars in any color of your choice. Q. How long have you been in operation? I. Just over six months, but my team has been in the business for over five years. Q. Any plans for the near future? I. I hope to expand to other cities in the region across the South West.

MAST PICK OF PICS 2010 Angelina Jolie was joined by her husband Brad Pitt and her co-star Johnny Depp on the red carpet for the New York Premiere of her new movie “The Tourist” on Dec 07th. She looked beautiful an Atelier Versace gown. Her ivory white long sleeved gown was gathered on one side to reveal a thigh high split. Through that split we can see her white Ferragamo pumps. Angelina wore her hair in a half up and half down style, and kept her jewels to a minimum by just accessorized with rectangle shaped pendant earrings.

MAST Farewells In the past 12 months the world has said goodbye to many actors, artists, performers, and sporting icons. We take a look back at some of the greatest legacies lost in 2010 and pay tribute to those influential figures who have made a mark on the world.

17 March 1969 –11 February 2010 (aged 40)The fashion world was rocked by

FASHION DESIGNER ALEXANDER McQueen CBE

the untimely death of Alexander McQueen, one of Britain’s most influential designers, who tragically took his own life at his home in Mayfair, London. McQueen was found hanged nine days after his mother died from cancer. The son of a Lewisham taxi driver, the fashion icon came from humble beginnings, growing up on a council estate in Stratford. The openly gay designer’s most notable achievements include becoming one of the youngest ever to win the ‘British Designer of the Year’ award; It is reported to have left a note saying: "Look after my dogs, sorry, I love you, Lee." February 8 1968 – 28 May 2010 (aged 42) American child actor Gary Coleman will always be remembered for the catchphrase ‘Whatchoo talkin’ ‘bout, Willis?’ when playing Arnold Jackson in the hugely successful sitcom ‘Diff’rent Strokes.’

He is also renowned for inventing ‘bumsters’ Low rise jeans which have been said to typify Alexander McQueen’s style. ACTOR GARY COLEMAN

Having played cute and sassy Arnold from the tender age of ten, Coleman ended up earning as much as $100,000 per episode. However, he was never able to recreate his early success, and his adult acting career was as short-lived as the TV programme that made him famous. After subsequently securing only minor roles, including a 1996 cameo in the final episode of ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’, and several unknown television movies, he began to fade from the public eye. By 1998 he had taken a job as a security guard to make ends meet. 1938-02 02 2010 Tahir Hussain, well-known filmmaker and Bollywood star Aamir Khan's father, died of a massive heart attack here on Tuesday morning, sources close to the family said.

‘Whatchoo talkin’ ‘bout, Willis?’ VH1 ranked Coleman as number one on the list of ‘100 Greatest Child Stars’ on television.

He is survived by his wife and two sons, Aamir and Faisal, and two daughters, Farhat and Nikhat. Hussain is known for producing hits like "Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke" (1993) that starred son Aamir, "Dulha Bikta Hai" (1982), "Zakhmee" (1975), "Anamika" (1973) and "Caravan" (1971). In 1990, he made his directorial debut with "Tum Mere Ho" with Aamir and Juhi Chawla. Tahir Hussain started his film career in 1957 as an assistant director to his brother Nasir in films like Tumsa Nahin Dekha and Dil Deke Dekho.
