Marvin Rees Mayor of Bristol
Mr Parris entered the world of teaching some 30 years ago. Born in London he came to Bristol in 1987 to complete a PGCE at Bristol University. His first teaching role was in Bedminster Down where he stayed for 2 years. He then took a post as teacher of Science in Chippenham, where he stayed for 9 years working his way up the teaching ladder, even taking a year out to become a Science advisor. After a brief stay in Bridgwater, as Head of Science, in 2001 he moved to King Edmunds School in Yate where he became Head of Year. He refers to his year group as “his babies” many of whom remember him very fondly and regularly bump into him and exchange stories as they are all now turning 30. He became Assistant Head teacher and is a very well respected teacher who everyone remembers as their favourite Mr P.
Marvin Rees is the elected Mayor of Bristol. He was elected in May 2016, becoming the first European City Mayor of Black African-Caribbean descent.
These days he can be found working in a specialist unit for Children with Autistic Spectrum disorders. He has been married to Sue for 29 years and they have 2 sons.
Ken Simpson FSB Ken has spent his working life in the retail sector, from being a Saturday boy with Asda through a variety of store manager roles with some once famous names in food retailing, to his final position in retail as Audit Controller for Somerfield. ...how we came into existence Our work in the community started in 2004, when our founder, a celebrated Radio and TV personilty in Kenya, arranged to have Junior Sheikh(then still in school) hop onto public transport to the Commonwealth Museum at Temple Meads to present a short five minute Radio Broadcast on Comm FM that marked the end of the day’s fast for the month of Ramadhan, this was for 30 days. In 2005 he launched the 1st Islamic Radio RSL (restricted service licence) Radio Station for the South West Muslim community. Junior was called upon to start a training programme for would be presenters every weekend from early 2005 to the broadcast date in October. A fully-fledged radio with a complete 24 hour programme schedule. In the 30 days of its broadcast we helped create awareness and raise funds for a number of charities. We are not only about glitz and glamour.. We support communities & charities across international waters, and those on our doorstep. In 2008 he founded Radio Mast FM, the 1st Asian Radio Station in the South West and South Wales, that included all faiths and communities in the broadcast. This was followed by the founding of Mast The Magazine in 2009, a first for the Asian & Ethnic communities in the South West and South Wales, distributed across the South West and in Cardiff, Newport and later Swansea. The magazine celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2019, a moment we are all proud of and thank our local small business and organistions, like SARI for supporting the magazine since then. Our founder realised the need to honour the Black Minority Ethnic communities in 2011 after seeing that all the local Bristol Awards did not feature any Black Minority Ethnic communities. MTM South West Asian Awards was founded in 2012. The evening was launched by the newly elected Mayor of Bristol, George Ferguson and attended by close to 750 people across the South West and South Wales. Two of our VIP guests are sat in the audience
tonight, Cllr Ian Boulton of Staple Hill and three times Lord Mayor; Cllr. Peter Abraham who presented the first award on that inaugural evening, who to date has not missed a single event since 2012. In 2014 we re-branded as MTM Asian, Black & Ethnic Awards, and in 2016 further spread our wings by introducing a National Award For Excellence & Achievement and a Special International Award. This year we have three National Awards up for grabs. Since inception we have supported various Charites with Help for Heroes being our first in 2012. Last year we undertook a major task by supporting the campaign against the continued slaughter of the African Elephants. Junior, Raffi, and Joe organised a 10 day London to Bristol, Ivory Belongs To Elephant Walk to create awareness of the plight. This year our chosen Charity is Prostate Cancer UK, a cause close to the heart of our Founder, whose brother was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, late last year, a condition that is as good as the end of the road for the millions suffering in Africa due to lack of proper medical facilities and exorbitant medical costs in countries like Kenya. not only do we showcase diversity, we also celebrate communities. During our time here, we have made it our mission to showcase our rich and diverse City on a national level, and across International waters. In the community we have supported many charity groups, community organisations and local business. This year we have participated and supported Sikh Union Coventry and Nepalese Community Nuneaton at their community evenings and provided sound and stage equipment and management for the Grand Iftar in Bristol, supported the Bath Hindu Community at their annual Diwali function. We thank our panel of judges, our voulenteers, performers, partners and supporters, and above all, our nominees and guests without whom this would not happen. Finally, to our founder Big Q, and CEO Junior Sheikh who is the heart and soul of these awards.

As a past recipient of the MTM Woman of the Year award, I can say that I am truly proud and humbled to have been nominated for this prestigious MTM Award. The team was led by Raffi Sheikh and supported by Joe Hawkins, the team raised awareness on the plight of the African Elephant at every opportunity in different towns from Windsor to Bath. The walk finished at the Cenotaph in Bristol and climaxed at the Glittering Gala Award Evening at the Bristol Marriott Hotel. They will have a table by the Red Carpet to create awareness and will speak at the awards evening. Prostate Cancer UK will place an envelope on each table for those who may wish to donate to the charity. In the UK, about 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at some point in their lives. Older men, men with a family history of prostate cancer and black men are more at risk. If you have any of these risk factors or are worried about your risk of prostate cancer, or if you have any symptoms, speak to your GP. They can talk to you about your risk, and about the tests that are used to diagnose prostate cancer. You can also get in touch with our Specialist Nurses, who can help you understand your personal risk of Prostate Cancer. Age – Prostate Cancer mainly affects men over 50, and your risk increases as you get older. The average age for men to be diagnosed with prostate cancer is between 65 and 69 years. If you are under 50, your risk of getting Prostate Cancer is very low. Men under 50 can get it, but it isn’t common.

Plastic Pollution Awareness & Action Projects We are also supporting a new iniative Plastic Pollution Awareness & Action Projects that we launch tonight. This project is spearheaded by Naseem Talukdar who is founder of FeedTheHomelessBristol. We at #PPAAP are on a journey to eliminate single use plastic. You, Yourself, Your family, Your friends, Your community & Your business should set out on its own journey too. It may well take several years but clearly communicated intent is a great first step forward. We would like to build an awareness of plastic usage and its pollution to the public. The increasing amount of pollution and damage caused by using plastic has the potential to cause great harm to the environment in the form of air, water and land. Finding a solution for change, and to find a friendly approach in helping the environment!

Originally sung by men and women who had been sold as slaves but whose souls had remained sensitive to music, the Sega is nowadays a folksong which has integrated itself within the framework of our folklore. The Sega is usually sung in Creole (mother tongue of Mauritians). Many singers had thought of also bringing forward the English version of the Sega songs but later resolved not to proceed with it so as to preserve the uniqueness and cultural richness of the local music of Mauritius.
