A SUCCESS STORY • According to the book “Forever Barbie” by M. G. Lord, Ruth Handler was the one who came up with the idea for the Barbie doll after seeing a German doll named Lilli that was anatomically correct and intended to be given as a gag gift to bachelors. Her husband Elliot was already in the manufacturing business. Ruth asked him to start making adult-looking dolls for their daughter, who was too old for baby dolls but not too old for dolls altogether. Elliot began manufacturing the doll. • The doll was named after the Handler’s daughter, Barbie, who was born in 1941. Their son Ken was born in 1944. The factory foreman’s name was Harold Matson. Matson and Elliot combined their names to form the Mattel Corporation. • In 1955 Mattel was already well established in the toy business when they got the opportunity to sponsor a new TV show: “The Mickey Mouse Club.” As a result, Mattel’s ads turned toy sales from a once-a-year occurrence at Christmas time to a year-round event. Barbie went on the market in 1959. (continued next page)

• Barbie was the only adult female doll on the market until Mattel introduced her best friend Midge. Midge was less glamorous than Barbie, while still being perky. Later Midge got a boyfriend, Alan, and Barbie got a little sister, Skipper. • One model of Skipper had budding breasts that would sprout when her arms were shoved backwards. Twist her arms once again and she was flat-chested once more. • The Skipper doll came with her own miniature Barbie doll just over an inch tall with a paintedon swimsuit and yellow hair. • Mattel was originally against the idea of producing a Ken doll because male dolls had never sold well. The Ken was finally released in 1961. It was a success because little girls knew that Barbie needed a boyfriend. • Barbie’s cousin Francie appeared in 1966, followed by her black friends Christie and Julia. To make the afro hair look real, the doll’s heads were stuck in an oven and heated, making the hair crinkle up. Jamaican Barbie and Nigerian Barbie followed at later dates. • Talking Stacey, Barbie’s English friend, was released in 1969. • When the question arose of whether Barbie should have a baby, the problem was solved by issuing a Barbie doll that came with an infant and an apron with “Babysitter” clearly written on it. • In 1993 Mattel came out with an “Earring Magic Ken” complete with single earring, purple vest, and necklace.

IT’S A FACT

• Ruth Handler at first decided not to make a doll-sized vacuum cleaner for Barbie because she didn’t feel Barbie should be thought of as someone who would do “rough housework.” (Continued next page)

Bad Bunny! By Tresa Erickson

Whether running around your yard or in an enclosure at the pet store, bunnies can be cute. Don’t let their outward appearance fool you,, however. Bunnies can be very destructive animals, digging into and chewing on everything in sight—carpet, furniture, woodwork, even electrical cords. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to curb the behavior. It doesn’t matter where they are. Outside or inside, bunnies, by nature, will burrow, dig and chew. Their teeth and claws are forever growing, and in order to keep them healthy, sharp and trimmed, they must burrow, dig and chew. It is essential that you provide items for your bunny to burrow into, dig into and chew on. There are a wide variety of products available. Check into them. Having a continuous supply of Timothy hay to munch on, toys to play with and untreated grass mats to dig into will do wonders for keeping your pet bunny busy and away from your household possessions. You can also make your own toys using stuff around the house and yard. Old cardboard boxes make great places to burrow into, while old apple tree branches make great chew toys. Keep in mind that the wider selection of toys you provide for your bunny, the more likely its urge to burrow, dig and chew will be satisfied.

• In 1967 Barbie acquired eyelashes and a twisting waist. Any girls who had an old Barbie were encouraged to trade it in for a discount on a new one. Each year afterwards a new version was released that would do something the previous dolls did not: tilt the head, kiss, blink eyes, grip objects, etc. This ensured continuing sales. • Until 1971, Barbie’s gaze was downcast to one side — a very submissive look. In 1971 she was given a direct straight-ahead look as the women’s liberation movement gathered force. • Jack Ryan, who was married for a short time to Zsa Zsa Gabor, invented the joints that allowed Barbie to bend at the waist and the knee. Ryan made a fortune on his patents. • In 1966 “Color Magic” Barbie was on the market. Her hair and clothes changed color when a “magic” potion was applied. • In 1977 an 18-inch tall Barbie was introduced. She came with a pink Corvette, a motorhome, and a beauty boutique. • In 1979 Barbie got a Fur and Jewels Safe that came complete with a security alarm. • In 1981 Barbie developed tan lines. • Even though Black Barbie and Hispanic Barbie came out in 1980, Blond Barbie outsells all other dolls even in Latin America. • In 1992 the expensive Empress Bride Barbie collector’s doll had a dress created by worldfamous dress designer Bob Mackie. • Barbie’s waist is so narrow not to fit some impossible male ideal, but because when you make a doll-sized waist-band out of cloth, the folds of cloth are so bulky and cumbersome that it would make all but the most slender doll look fat. • Today Mattel is one of the biggest apparel manufacturers in the world due to Barbie’s expanding wardrobe, with over 100 new additions annually. You may know the difference between good and bad behavior, but your bunny doesn’t. Again, bunnies by nature like to burrow, dig and chew. They don’t know they shouldn’t burrow into your tennis shoes or chew on the laces unless you teach them. Should you find your bunny gnawing on something it shouldn’t, tell it no, clap your hands and give it a chew toy. When you find it using its chew toys, reward it with a treat, praise or affection. Training is imperative for stopping bad habits before they begin. Finally, consider having your bunny spayed or neutered. Not only will this prevent baby bunnies, but it will make your bunny less prone to chewing, digging and other destructive behaviors.

Even with a great selection of playthings, your bunny may still be tempted. That stack of shoes at the foot of your bed and that lovely cardboard castle in your daughter’s room may call out to them. Curb the temptation by keeping everything important out of your bunny’s reach. File all paperwork, tuck away electrical cords and set up gates and pens. Don’t just let your bunny have the run of the house. They will get into places you never thought possible and destroy your most precious of possessions. Block off access to certain rooms and furniture or contain your bunny in a pen. Bunny-proofing is essential, as is training.

Having a pet bunny can be a test in patience at first, but with time and training, you can teach your bunny acceptable behavior and keep your home intact. Give it a go, and your bunny is sure to act as cute as it looks.

CONTROVERSY

• When the National Organization for Women came out with a condemnation of the ten most sexist companies in 1971, Mattel was ranked high on the list. Their ads consistently showed boys playing only with educational toys while girls played only with dolls. Later, Mattel couldn’t resist taking a jab at NOW. When they came out against the Miss America pageant in 1972, Mattel promptly came out with a Miss America doll. • In 1992 the talking Barbie got in big trouble with feminists for saying “Math class is tough.”

In response to protests, Mattel changed the remark to “Science class is cool.” The controversy of the math class comment received publicity nationwide, and even made the front page of the “Washington Post.” • In December of 1993 talking Barbies appeared in stores— but instead of saying “What should I wear to the prom?” they said, “Eat lead, Cobra!” and “Vengeance is mine!” Meanwhile G.I. Joe dolls showed up that were saying, “Let’s go shopping!” and “Will we ever have enough clothes?” A group called the Barbie Liberation Organization swapped hundreds of Barbie voice

boxes with G.I. Joe’s in order to make a point. • If Barbie were life-size, her measurements would be 39-23-33. In retaliation against Barbie’s unrealistic measurements, High Self Esteem Toys came out with a competing doll who was a bit fatter. They claimed Barbie dolls encouraged girls to become anorexic. The press embraced the new doll, but the little girls did not. It was introduced in 1991 and was out of production in 1994. • Barbie’s “Slumber Party” outfit came with a bathroom scale that was permanently fixed at (continued on next page)

• Most birds hop when on the ground, but the ostrich has specialized in running. It can run up to 50 mph, (80 kph) which is faster than many birds can fly. The ostrich is capable of taking 15 foot (4.6 m) strides at that pace. • They don’t cheep and chirp like most birds do. They roar loudly with a strange hissing noise mixed in. • A flock of three to five ostrich hens share one rooster as a mate. • All ostrich hens in a flock lay their eggs in a single large nest, which is then protected by the dominant hen. Scientists repeatedly marked eggs and rearranged eggs in order to prove that she always pushes other eggs out, but never her own. They theorize that she recognized the tiny pits on the shell of each egg. • Ostrich eggs weigh 3 lbs. (1.3 kg), which was a factor leading to the decimation of their numbers, because the eggs are tasty and very nutritious. The giant eggs are the largest of any living bird, although they are actually the smallest eggs relative to the size of the adult bird. • Ostrich chicks are the size of adult chickens when they hatch. They can run as fast as the adults by the age of one month. • Ostriches have a strange habit of kidnapping other ostrich chicks and raising them as their own. Any time they have the opportunity, an ostrich will run another ostrich off from the nest, then hustle all the chicks over to its own nest. The brood may be stolen back by the original ostrich, or a third party may make off with the batch. This chick-napping goes on and on until a dominant ostrich is caring for a huge brood of chicks, with its own chicks mixed into the bunch. Scientists theorize they do this in order to provide protection for their own chicks: if a predator kills some chicks, their own offspring are more likely to survive if they are surrounded by other chicks. It’s the “safety in numbers” principle. • The legs of an ostrich can be formidable weapons, capable of killing a human or a lion with a forward kick. Ostriches kick forward rather than backward. An ostrich at a zoo once bent a quarter-inch-thick bar of iron into a right angle with a single kick. (continued on next page)

(cont) • They often travel with other grazing animals, such as zebras or antelopes, because a herd of animals will kick up bugs, rodents, and lizards that the ostriches eat, while the ostriches provide advance warning of approaching predators. • Contrary to popular belief, ostriches do not bury their heads in the sand. When predators approach, they will often lie flat on the ground to become less visible, pressing their heads against the ground. • The ostrich has the largest eye of any land animal, measuring 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter which allows predators to be seen at long distances. • Ostriches can live for 70 years.

STRANGE CHRISTMAS

• Mafia fugitive Francesco Farina had been wanted by the Sicilian police since 1996. He’d been on the run, fleeing from charges of robbery and drug dealing. When police suspected they had tracked him down to a particular flat in Sicily, they staked the place out with a succession of cops dressed as Santa standing on the street corner outside the building. They arrested Farina shortly before Christmas, 2001, and then turned in their Santa suits. • Just before Christmas, a Reno, Nevada newspaper asked for volunteers to come forward to help in some less-than-scientific experiments to find out how to destroy unwanted fruitcakes. The assembled group then devised a number of methods. They discovered over the course of the day that dropping a fruitcake from a second floor had little impact. One team shot it with a sub-machine gun (sub-machine guns are legal in Nevada) but also found the fruitcake survived relatively intact. Football player Damon Fine drop-kicked one, with very satisfying explosive results. However, the best method was running over the fruitcake with a truck. • Fundraisers in London raise money for cancer research by hosting the Great Christmas Pudding race each December. The event pits teams of celebrities in fancy dress in a relay race. Each team carries a Christmas pudding on a platter, waiter-style. The racecourse is full of obstacles. The team that wins is awarded Christmas puddings as a prize. • In December of 2001, over 500 Santas participated in a four-mile (6.4 km) run for charity. The event, held in Wales, was open to both male and female Santas in full costume. Tim Davies, a farmer, was the first male Santa to cross the finish line, with a of time of 21 minutes, 16 seconds. Annie Lander was the first female Santa and she ran the course in 26 minutes. (continued)

ANSWERS TO PUZZLES

• In December of 2001, organizers at Guinness World Records sponsored the first ever “Santathon” to find out who the world’s best Santa is. The event, held in England, included a field of eight top contenders in full beards, red suits, and black boots, battling it out for the title. Competitive events included sack-hauling, pie eating, chimney climbing, stocking filling, and ho-hohoing. In the end, David Broughton-Davis from Croydon, a professional Santa for Selfridges, (a department store in London) was awarded the title of Britain’s Ultimate Santa. “I just wish that the pie-eating hadn’t taken place before the chimney climb,” he said after being awarded the Golden Boots trophy. • The TeePee Garden Center in Franklin Park, Pennsylvania had a Christmas display set up which included Donner and Blitzen, two tame reindeer rented from a nearby farm. When a gate was left open during feeding time shortly before Christmas, the reindeer wandered away. Donner was captured, but Blitzen ran off. Everyone’s worst fears were realized the next day when a local man grabbed his gun and shot what he thought was a really large deer about a half mile away from the garden center. Law enforcement officials were reluctant to file charges because reindeer are not covered under local hunting regulations. • Dunsley Hall Country House Hotel in England once offered just the thing for people who were sick and tired of Christmas: a 3-night, 4-day “Bah Humbug!” Christmas get-away. For about $500 per person, kill-joys heard carols sung out of tune, ate cold sandwiches for Christmas dinner, received gifts of socks, underwear, ties, and bath salts, threw decorations into a bonfire, and joined in a toast to Ebenezer Scrooge. “Some people just want to get away from the normal festivities and don’t feel like celebrating Christmas,” said a spokeswoman for the hotel.

And to those in Ohio, it’s the county seat of Greene County, a community about 21 miles (34 km) from Dayton. • Xystus is an architectural term, referring to a long, covered portico, or main entrance, of ancient Greek gymnasiums. Here, athletes would exercise during inclement weather. To the Romans, the xystus was the garden walkway in front of the porticoes, where they planted flower beds. • Physicians are familiar with two unusual “X” words, xyster and xiphisterna. The xyster is a surgical instrument used for scraping bones, while the xiphisterna refers to the cartilage at the lower end of the body’s sternum, that long CHRISTMAS flat bone located at the center of the chest.
