fatale fireflies” because the female will expertly mimic the flashing pattern of other species in order to lure a potential mate, whom she then devours. • Often a flock of birds will post one bird as a sentry to keep a lookout for predators as the rest of the flock feeds. Birds bring the sentry tasty morsels in order to reward it for its work. Some sentry birds give a false alarm when no predator is evident just at the exact same moment it’s seen a juicy morsel another bird has found. The birds drop what they’re doing upon hearing the warning cry, and the sentry swoops in to claim the treat. • Capuchin monkeys practice the same deceit: when the monkey acting as a lookout sees another monkey finding something yummy, it gives the call warning of attack. The monkey promptly scampers up a tree, giving the lookout the opportunity to snatch the tasty morsel for himself. (continued next page)

• One type of octopus is an expert imitator. Called the mimic octopus, it can configure its body position and adjust its coloring to look exactly like other animals or to blend into the background. It uses this talent to get closer to its prey, and also to avoid being prey. By imitating a female crab, it can get close enough to a male crab to grab it and eat it. When approached by a carnivorous damselfish, it can mimic a banded sea snake, which preys upon damselfish. • Australia is home to a remarkable bird called the lyrebird. The male of this species attracts mates by fanning his tail feathers while singing a courtship song. Lyrebirds are excellent mimics and can repeat the calls of other birds perfectly. Females seem to be attracted to the male lyrebirds that have the most complicated songs, so the males incorporate trills, warbles, various bird calls, and even the sounds of babies crying, jackhammers pounding, chain saws, car alarms, barking dogs, car horns, and other sounds of human settlements.

• There’s a plant in Australia called the casuarina. Its seeds are small and fleshy, rich in oils and nutrients. Harvester ants love to collect the seeds, store them in their underground larders, and eat them once they have sprouted. Also living in Australia is a type of stick insect. A female walking stick lays eggs that just happen to look identical to casuarina seeds. She drops them randomly on the ground underneath the casuarina tree where she lives. Ants come along and collect her eggs along with the casuarina seeds, carrying them back to their storage unit. When the eggs hatch, the baby walking stick looks exactly like a newly hatched ant. The walking stick simply walks out of the ant nest and climbs the nearest casuarina tree to start the cycle all over again. (cont’d on next page)

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta CAT’S LITTER BOX PROMPTS VETS VISIT DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 8-year-old cat “Dawn” seems to be urinating a lot. In the past her litter box has been fairly dry and needed to be scooped only once a day. But now the litter just seems soaked. I did switch to a new brand of cat litter that doesn’t “clump” because I heard it might cause health problems. I haven’t seen Dawn drinking lots of water, but this seems weird. What do you think? -- Tracy in Denver DEAR TRACY: Go ahead and take Dawn straight to the veterinarian. While it may just be a peculiarity of a new brand of litter, “soaked” litter doesn’t sound normal to me, either. Excess urination is a signal of a physical problem with your cat. Most owners first think of diabetes, but only the vet can make sure, because other conditions exist that also have excess urination as a symptom. Dawn could be drinking from other water sources besides her water dish, which is why you might not have noticed increased thirst. Cats that are getting ill tend to be secretive as well, because it’s instinctive for them to hide their condition from predators. Write down anything else that appears different about Dawn, even if it doesn’t seem important: changes in behavior and energy, her teeth and gums, in eating or drinking, and as you noticed, her bathroom habits. Once the veterinarian has diagnosed a problem, then you can work together on the best treatment plan for Dawn. If it’s diabetes, the vet will recommend a very specific diet plan. If it’s something else, they will offer solid advice on treatment. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com.

• The male digger bee is always on the lookout for a female digger bee. Occasionally when the male digger bee finds a female, it turns out not to be a female digger bee at all. Instead, it’s actually a collection of hundreds of tiny blister beetle larva, who have gathered together and formed themselves into an exact replica of a female digger bee. When the male digger bee arrives looking for a romantic encounter, the tiny blister beetle larvae jump onto the body of the bee. The confused bee then flies away, looking for a real female. When he finds a female, the blister beetle larvae have just enough time to abandon the male digger bee and transfer to the female. When she’s done mating, she flies to her underground nest where she has filled cells with pollen in order to feed her offspring. While she is laying eggs, the blister beetles move into her larder, where they feast on pollen and grow into adults. • Cuckoos are famous for laying their eggs in another bird’s nest. But the cuckoo finch of Africa has perfected this subterfuge. When it lays its eggs in another bird’s nest, the eggs look exactly like the real eggs of the host bird. When the host returns, she can see that there are imposter eggs in the nest, but she is unable to tell which are her eggs and which are the imposters. She ends up hatching all the eggs, but because the cuckoo eggs hatch earlier than her own eggs, the cuckoo chicks eat the majority of the food she brings back. • Bats home in on their prey by using echolocation, which is a series of rapid clicks that bounce back to the bat’s ears and indicate the location of prey. But the Grote’s tiger moth outwits bats by producing clicks of its own that jam the bat’s receiver, confusing it for the precious seconds needed for the moth to drop like a stone to the forest floor.

CAMOUFLAGE

• The appropriately named bird-dropping spider uses its clever disguise as camouflage. No one is going to pay attention to a pile of bird poop. Other insects wander by the pile of apparent bird poop, the spider then promptly pounces on them and eats them. (continued next page)

• One type of spider found in Taiwan builds a life-size model of itself in order to act as a decoy. Using pellets made from the remains of insects, old leaves, empty egg sacks, and silk, this spider constructs a replica of itself. When predatory wasps attack, the spider is safely hidden away while the wasp attacks the decoy. • The yellow-rumped thornbill is an Australian bird whose nests are often raided by a bird called the currawong. Currawongs always attack from above, dropping down on a thornbill nest in order to feast on the eggs. The defense strategy of the thornbill is to build a two-tiered nest: the top floor is a decoy nest, which contains no eggs. The bottom floor, hidden from the currawong’s view, is the real nest where the eggs are safe.

To the ancient Greeks, it was the concept of hospitality, generosity, and courtesy shown to those far from home. To the botanist, it’s the effect of pollen on a seed. And to those in Ohio, it’s the county seat of Greene County, a community about 21 miles (34 km) from Dayton. • Xystus is an architectural term, referring to a long, covered portico, or main entrance, of ancient Greek gymnasiums. 3rd Quarter 2016 Amazing Plants Week 34 August 14 WATERMELONS -August 20 Page 8 • Watermelon is the most popular melon in the U.S., followed by cantaloupe and honeydew. • It’s native to Africa and is depicted in hieroglyphs on the walls of ancient Egypt. • Although there are over 300 varieties, only about 50 of them are grown commercially, and only five are commonly found in supermarkets. • Watermelon contains many essential vitamins as well as lycopene. Lycopene is an antioxidant that gives fruits and vegetable a pink or red color. • Every part of the watermelon is edible, including the seeds (roasted like pumpkin seeds) and rinds (slice them for stir fry, stew them, or pickle them). • The first cookbook published in the U.S. in 1776 contained a recipe for watermelon rind pickles. • One unusual snack is to put watermelon rinds in the blender and add lime juice for a kicky refreshing treat. • Watermelon slices can be baked, pan fried, or grilled. When cooked, they become very firm and meaty and are called watermelon steaks. • Some people claim that the juice of a watermelon helps prevent muscle pain if taken in advance of a heavy-duty workout. • To tell if a watermelon is ripe, look at the part of the melon that was against the ground when it was growing. It should be buttery yellow rather than white or green. (continued next page)

DR. ROACH WRITES: A while back, I asked readers for suggestions on swallowing pills, and I got many helpful answers. I particularly liked this pharmacist’s advice, since it combines physics and common sense: “Because capsules FLOAT and tablets SINK, two ways are helpful. For capsules this works for me: Place the capsule on your tongue, then take a big swallow of water through a straw, keeping your chin neutral. For tablets, put water in your mouth first, then tilt your head back and drop the tablet into your mouth and swallow.” Using a straw was the most frequent advice I heard. Thicker liquids were the key for other readers, while one reminded me that an in

expensive pill crusher can turn a pill to powder, which can then be mixed into yogurt or applesauce. However, always check with your pharmacist, since some pills, such as longacting formulations, should not be crushed, and a few should not be mixed with foods. Another person found that swallowing some ice chips for a few minutes prevented the gag reflex that kept her from swallowing medicines. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My father read your recent column pertaining to kidney stones. He recently passed a kidney stone and was wondering if there is a lab that he could send his stone to directly to be analyzed? Unfortunately, he prefers not to visit an internist or urologist. -- L.P. ANSWER: It depends on the state, but most laboratories require a professional’s order to perform testing. I have mixed feelings about this; however, I generally agree, since a physician or other provider should provide individualized recommendations on the appropriate changes in diet, medication and fluid intake, based on the stone type, medications taken, diseases or conditions present and other factors. There are services available on the Internet that will perform laboratory testing without an order (by having a medical director in a given state order the lab), but I don’t recommend it for the reasons above. ***

WATERMELONS (cont’d) • If you thump a melon and it sounds hollow, don’t buy it. Buy the ones that have a flat, dull sound when thumped. Press your hands to the ends of the melon. If both ends are firm, that’s good, but if either hand gives a little, that’s bad. • The world’s heaviest watermelon was grown by Chris Kent of Sevierville, Tennessee in 2013, weighing in at 350.5 lbs (159 kg). That’s about the size of an NFL lineman. • China produces more watermelons than any other country. The U.S. ranks 5th. Forty-four states grow watermelons with Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, and Arizona leading production. • Farmers in Japan grow square watermelons by encasing the growing fruit in a cube-shaped box. They also grow watermelons in the shapes of hearts, pyramids, and human faces. These melons look neat but are rarely edible because they are harvested before they are fully ripe. They are purchased as novelty gifts. • Seedless watermelons are not genetically modified. Instead, they are the result of hybridization. If you take a female watermelon plant that has 44 chromosomes, and pollinate it from a male watermelon plant that has 22 chromosomes, you get a sterile seedless watermelon. It is similar to a horse mating with a donkey and producing a mule, which is sterile. The white seeds of a seedless watermelon are just empty seed coats. Today about 85% of watermelons sold are seedless. • The Bradford watermelon is the sweetest variety in the world. It started in 1783, when an American soldier was captured by the British and held on a prison ship. He was given watermelon to eat that was the sweetest he’d ever tasted. He saved every seed, and planted them when he returned to Georgia. It was commonly boiled down to form watermelon molasses or distilled into watermelon brandy. But its rind is very soft, making it difficult to ship. It nearly went extinct before a patch was found being tended in a back yard garden, and it was revived. It’s one of the most drought-resistant types of watermelon and is now being grown in Bolivia and Tanzania. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have to take levothyroxine in order to obtain an acceptable TSH number. I have read that some doctors are stating that there is a relationship between hypothyroidism and gluten intolerance, possibly even celiac disease. Is this proven to the point where a patient should alter his or her diet and give up the basic foods of bread and cereal? -- R.K. ANSWER: People with celiac disease have a much higher risk of autoimmune thyroid disease (especially Hashimoto’s, the most common cause of low thyroid) than expected, to the point where everyone with celiac disease should have a blood test to look at thyroid levels. Celiac disease, or intolerance of gluten in general, may have few or subtle symptoms, and it might be worthwhile to consider testing for celiac disease in people with autoimmune thyroid disease. However, I would not recommend a drastic change in diet for people with thyroid disease if there are no symptoms. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. • During the Revolutionary War, the American ship Le Bonhomme Richard was engaged in battle with the British Serapis. The Richard took a beating and was in danger of sinking. The captain of the Richard ordered his crew to close in on the Serapis, then lashed the two ships together. The captain of the Serapis, seeing the Richard begin to sink, asked for a surrender, but Captain John Paul Jones said no, calling out, “I have not yet begun to fight!” The two ships mauled each other till the Serapis finally surrendered. The Richard sank, but John Paul Jones sailed the Serapis home as a prize. • Admiral David Farragut was leading the Union attack against the Confederates in the ship Tecumseh. The bay was mined, forcing ships to pass close to the Confederate fort. The Tecumseh was sunk by a mine, so Farragut moved to the Hartford to continue the attack. The fleet was in disarray and the tide was sweeping them closer to the guns on shore. The Confederate ship Tennessee was closing in. Farragut called out, “Damn the torpedoes, go ahead!” The ships pressed on through the minefield without further damage. Soon both the fort and the Tennessee had fallen. Farragut’s speech is now remembered as,“Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!” • Chaplain Howell Forgy was aboard the cruiser New Orleans in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked. The man who had the keys to the ammunition room had gone ashore before the attack, so the crewmen were forced to break down the door, only to find that the automatic ammunition hoist was out of order. So the men formed a human chain to get the ammo on deck. Seeing the men tire after passing many heavy loads, Forgy called out, “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!” This later became the title of a popular song. (continued on next page)

Nevertheless, he won the battle and sent a terse dispatch announcing the victory, saying, “We have met the enemy, and they are ours.” Years later Walt Kelly’s cartoon character Pogo parodied this, saying, “We have met the enemy and he is us.” • Just R north of O theT equator earth LO D O the AN WisMcircled by a band of wind that moves nearly constantly.
