BIRDS

by Janet Spencer Come along with Tidbits as we look at birds! • Crows and ravens will intentionally lead other members of their flock away from a source of food so they can return later and eat the meal themselves. • After an oil spill, researchers found that when oil-covered guillemots (a type of seabird) were rescued, cleaned up, and then released back into the wild, 70% of them died within two weeks after being released. • The Florida scrub jay is omnivorous and eats whatever is available. Humans often provide nuts and seeds which are very nutritious for the adult scrub jays. However, scrub jays that are regularly fed by humans are fooled into thinking that spring has arrived early. They build their nests, lay their eggs, and hatch their young earlier than normal. The newly-hatched scrub jays are unable to digest nuts and seeds, and they have unfortunately been born before nature’s natural bounty of grubs and bugs is readily available. They suffer from stunted growth and starvation. • Birds that live in New Guinea eat poisonous beetles without suffering ill effects. The deadly neurotoxins they ingest collect in their feathers and skin, making the birds poisonous. (continued next page)

BIRD BITS (cont’d) • All domestic breeds of chickens originated with the red jungle fowl of southeastern Asia about 8,000 years ago. • The beaks of mallards, blackbirds, and zebra finches glow under ultraviolet light. • Flamingos are not naturally pink. They take on their pink hue not only from the pink shrimp they eat, but also from the green algae they consume, which turns pink during the digestive process. • Do you eat like a bird? Which bird? A vulture can eat up to a quarter of its body weight in a single sitting, making itself so heavy it cannot fly. Hummingbirds must eat more than their body weight in high-energy nectar each day. • The albatross can fly thousands of miles without ever landing, even sleeping on the wing. The bird can shut down half of its brain at a time, leaving the other half of the brain on autopilot. • An ostrich will urinate on its legs to cool them down on hot days. • European starlings line their nests with plants that inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungus as well as preventing lice, mites, and ticks from hatching. • The eyeball of a human is round and can easily turn in the eye socket. But the eyeball of an owl is tubular, and therefore cannot turn in the eye socket. This is why owls need to be able to swivel their heads 270 degrees. • Parrots have much bigger brains relative to body size than any other group of birds. In fact, the brain-to-body ratio of parrots is even larger than some primates. • Cuckoos are famous for laying their eggs in other birds’ nests, forcing the adoptive parents to raise the imposter chicks. But a bird called the blackcap is able to tell a cuckoo’s egg from its own eggs, and consistently throws the intruding eggs out of the nest. (cont’d on next page)

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta RAMBUNCTIOUS PUPPY IS OUT OF CONTROL DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently adopted a whippy little mutt who has a ton of energy. “Curtis” will zoom around the house at light speed, sometimes running into furniture and knocking things over. He will not listen to me at all. How can I get him to obey and to calm down? -- Exhausted “Puppy Mom” in Denver DEAR PUPPY MOM: It sounds like Curtis needs more exercise time, preferably outdoors with plenty of space to zoom around. If you have a backyard with a fence, that’s a great place to let him run -- supervised, of course. If you don’t have a yard, scout out a fenced-in area where you can take him regularly -- but not a dog park, not yet. Curtis first needs to learn to come when you call. He needs to learn how to sit and stay. These three basic commands are the foundation of a dog’s training. Once you’ve let him run in an open space for several minutes and he’s spent that initial burst of energy, call Curtis to you. Use a firm, confident voice. Don’t plead. Don’t get angry. BIRD BITS (cont’d) • Crows that see a grub in a hole often find a twig to use as a lever to extract the grub. If it’s a wide hole, they will choose a wide twig. If it’s a narrow hole, they’ll pick a skinny stick. If it’s a deep hole, they’ll find a long stick, and will get a short stick if it’s a shallow hole. They will also take a stick that’s not quite right and break it into the correct size. • Vultures like to eat eggs of other bird species. If it’s a small egg, they will carry it in the air and drop it on the ground to break it open. But if it’s a large egg and too big to carry, they will instead grab stones and drop the rocks on the egg from a height until it cracks open. • Crows like to eat nuts and clams but find them hard to open. Many crows have perfected the art of dropping these items on hard pavement to crack them open, with some going so far as Quarter to3rd drop them on2016 a busy roadway where the cars will roll over34 them. A hen will hurry over to see what kind of food he’s got, which gives the rooster an opportunity to try to mate with her. • Two male Japanese quail will fight for the right to mate with a female Japanese quail. Surprisingly, the female prefers to mate with whoever loses the fight. This is because the winner tends to be a more aggressive bird who will often bully his mate. (cont’d on next page)

A Veteran Died Alone

In July 2016 a veteran died alone in a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital, unattended and unchecked for many hours while a nurse played video games at the nursing station ... for her whole shift. Doctor’s instructions had been to check the patient once or twice an hour. No one even knew the veteran had passed away until the next shift took over. The nurse only admitted to playing computer games because the hospital cameras caught her. She was transferred to work in the cafeteria, but once the truth came out, investigations began, pushed forward by U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren. VA chief David Shulkin takes the allegations seriously ... OK. But here’s a suggestion: If you have a friend or relative in a VA hospital who is in such serious shape that they aren’t able to press the call button, don’t leave. Schedule watchers around the clock. Run shifts of friends, relatives, church members, American Legion or VFW members, or others. When nursing staff comes in, ask questions. If you’re told that “visiting hours” are over, refuse to leave until a doctor reads the chart in front of you and tells you that staff has indeed been doing what’s required to care for the patient. Take notes and get names. In other words, make waves and get attention. Let them know someone is watching. Yes, the patient might be so ill that death is inevitable, but do everything you can to ensure that proper care is being given. William Nutter, the veteran who died alone at the Bedford VA Medical Center in Massachusetts, was a two-tour Vietnam veteran who later completed 21 years in the Reserves. In Vietnam, he was a door gunner who got drenched with Agent Orange too often. He left a wife and family. We owed him more than this. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

BIRD BITS (cont’d) • Although it is said that opposites attract, in nature that is not always true. For instance, pinyon jays that find a partner who is similar in weight and age produce more offspring than pinyon jays that are unequally matched. Barnacle geese raise larger families if they are similar in size than if the couple is composed of one large and one small individual. Great tits are birds similar to a chickadee. They fall into two camps: those that like to explore, and those that like to stay home. The pairing will be more successful if each partner has a similar desire to either explore or stay home. • Black-tailed godwits mate for life, but the pair does not spend their entire life together. They raise their family over the summer months, and in the fall they set out to migrate south. However, they don’t migrate together. Each of them goes to a different place to spend the winter months. In the spring, they return to their mating grounds and somehow manage to find each other again, usually arriving within three days of each other in April. • A female pigeon cannot lay eggs if she is alone; her ovaries will not function unless another pigeon is in view. Sometimes all that is required is a mirror, so she can see her own reflection. • The kiwi, a New Zealand bird, lays an egg equal to a quarter of the mother’s weight. • If a chicken has a white earlobe it will lay a white egg. If a chicken has a red earlobe, it will lay a brown egg. • About 7% of zebra finches stutter, getting stuck on a portion of their song and repeating it until they finally continue the tune. • When a male penguin starts incubating a single egg for the two months required for it to hatch, he weighs around 88 lbs. (40 kg)When he finishes, he weighs half that. • The mature yolk of an ostrich egg is the biggest single cell found in nature.

CAFFEINE

#1 Recommended Process: Hot Water Extraction with Truck Mounted Equipment

• Caffeine is found naturally not only in coffee and tea but also in about 100 other plants. Caffeine acts as a natural insecticide. It can kill insects, stunt their growth, impair their coordination, or ruin their reproduction capabilities. • A typical cup of drip-brewed coffee contains about 115 mg of caffeine. The same size cup of espresso delivers about 250 mg of caffeine. That’s why espresso is served in such tiny cups. Percolated coffee has slightly less caffeine than drip coffee. Decaffeinated coffee does not mean the coffee is caffeine-free. Brewed decaf has about 5 mg of caffeine. A typical cup of truck stop coffee will usually contain more caffeine than an expensive cup of designer coffee. That’s because the less expensive robusta beans, from which inexpensive coffee is made, are higher in caffeine than the more expensive arabica beans used in specialty coffee. • Methylene chloride is the chemical used to remove caffeine from coffee beans. The chemical is poisonous when inhaled, but because it evaporates at 120°F (49°C), it dissipates when the beans are roasted at 400°F. (204°C). Any remnants still in the beans are rendered harmless by brewing the coffee at a temperature around 200°F. (93°C) • Caffeine increases alertness and enhances performance on certain tasks. Tests on drivers and typists prove that two cups of coffee can help. However, research shows it helps most if the drinker is bored or fatigued. It only boosts intellectual speed and not physical power. Furthermore, coffee seems to help extroverts more than it helps introverts. Studies show that people respond more to the caffeine they think they’ve consumed than they respond to the amount of caffeine that they’ve actually consumed. (cont’d on next page)

Cook Up a Fall Feast! It’s important to include fruits and vegetables in your diet year-round to stay healthy and to ward off diseases, but serving fresh vegetables can be a bit challenging during the winter months. If you enjoy eating seasonally, there are still a good variety of delicious, flavorful vegetables available. Here are some of the superstar fruits and vegetables of the fall and winter months.

• Those who regularly drink alcohol are 20% less likely to develop cirrhosis of the liver if they also drink one cup of coffee per day. • People who consume caffeine are less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease, and for those who have already developed Parkinson’s, it may help them control their movement. • Drinking two to four cups of coffee daily can reduce the risk of suicide by about 50%. The theoretical reason is because coffee acts as a mild antidepressant by aiding in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline. • Women who drink three or more cups of coffee a day are less likely to develop skin cancer than those who don’t. • People who drink four or more cups of coffee a day reduce their chances of developing type 2 diabetes by 50%. • People older than 65 who had higher blood levels of caffeine developed Alzheimer’s disease two to four years later than others with lower caffeine levels. • According to a study, nothing else comes close to providing as many antioxidants as coffee. While fruits and vegetables also have lots of antioxidants, the human body seems to absorb the most from coffee. HOWEVER… • Smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee at the same time raises the blood pressure. The combination of caffeine and nicotine also stops the effects of many high-blood pressure medications. This spells danger for those whose blood pressure is already too high. • Birth defects are possible if a pregnant woman drinks more than eight cups a day during the pregnancy. Doctors still recommend that pregnant women avoid all caffeine.

Sweet Potatoes: They have more nutrients than regular white potatoes and can replace white potatoes in some recipes. Sweet potatoes are loaded with beta-carotene (which the body makes into vitamin A), vitamin C, potassium, fiber, iron and vitamin B-6. Try them mashed, baked or as a dessert.

Apples: A traditional fall favorite, apples are easy to find in the supermarket, or you can pick your own at a nearby orchard. They’re a quick, easy snack that can be paired with peanut butter or cheese for protein. Apples contain antioxidants, which may help protect against certain cancers and reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Apples have vitamin C, vitamin K and fiber. Remember the old saying: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Broccoli: This is one vegetable that can be eaten raw or cooked, hot or cold, by itself or with other foods. Broccoli can help prevent cancer and heart disease, while boosting the immune system. Nutrients in broccoli include vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B-6, iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamin E.

Pumpkin: It’s a great source of potassium and beta carotene, a powerful antioxidant that is good for the eyes. Canned or prepared fresh, pumpkin can be made into a variety of soups, baked goods and desserts. Kiwi: This fruit can be eaten alone (after peeling) or can be added to many different dishes, including soups, salads and desserts. Kiwi contains antioxidants, which can help protect the eyes, heart and colon, plus vitamin C, fiber, potassium, magnesium and vitamin E.

Avocado: While avocados contain healthy monounsaturated fat, even healthy fat is a dense source of energy, so it’s important to eat them in moderation. Avocados also contain vitamin E, fiber, potassium, folate and vitamin C. They can be used on sandwiches or salads, or made into guacamole. Spinach: Dark-green veggies contain lots of nutrients that a healthy body needs. Spinach is packed with vitamin A, vitamin K, iron, folate, magnesium, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, fiber and vitamin E. Spinach also has antioxidants and anti-cancer agents. Frozen or fresh spinach can be added to just about any meal. Try using it on pizza or lasagna, or use it instead of lettuce in a salad. Pears: This fruit is a good source of fiber, antioxidants and vitamin C. Research suggests that regularly eating pears and other fruits may guard against macular degeneration. Pears seldom cause allergies and usually are safe for infants and small children. (continued on next page)

Green Beans: They are high in vitamin K, which protects red blood cells and helps reduce the severity of asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. They also contain vitamin C, potassium, folate, iron and magnesium. Green beans can be served as a side dish or used in salads, soups or casseroles. This recipe for Sweet Potato, Apple, Broccoli and Green Bean Bake uses these superstar fall vegetables in an interesting and delicious new way!

AUTUMN’S BOUNTY BAKE 1 large sweet potato, cut into 1/4 inch small cubes (1 1/4 cups) 4 large Granny Smith apples, cut into 1/4 inch small cubes 3-4 cups broccoli florets 2 cups green beans, trimmed 1 small red onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup raisins or cranberries 3 tablespoons chopped walnuts, pine nuts, pecans or nuts of choice, optional 1/3 cup olive oil 2 tablespoons dried Italian or poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon sugar 1. Heat oven to 375 F. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. 2. On the pan, combine the sweet potato, apples, broccoli, green beans, onion, garlic, raisins or cranberries, and walnuts. Drizzle with the oil, dried seasoning, salt, pepper and sugar; toss to coat. Spread the ingredients into one even layer on the pan. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. 3. Remove pan from the oven, and remove the foil. Using a spatula, turn the ingredients over to brown on top, and place them, uncovered, back into the oven. Bake for another 5 minutes, as needed or until the sweet potatoes are soft. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. How to keep pets safe In winter weather The arrival of cooler temperatures sparks various changes. Chilly air and precipitation can be dangerous, especially to pets that are unaccustomed to extreme changes in temperature. Pet owners may be well aware of the hazards of warm weather, including the threat of leaving pets in hot cars. But cold weather also has its share of risks. Heed these tips to keep pets safe and secure. • Schedule a well visit. The American Veterinary Medical Association suggests scheduling a visit with a veterinarian to check for any medical issues. Cold weather can aggravate symptoms of certain conditions, such as arthritis. A thorough examination can shed light on potential problems.

HOW TO SPEAK VIKING • The Old Norse noun “viking” meant an overseas expedition, and a “vikingr” was a sailor who went on one of these expeditions. Today many English words can be traced to Norse roots. • The word “berserk” comes from the Old Norse word meaning “bear skin.” How did bear skin come into our language meaning “frenetically violent or deranged”? It seems that Old Norse warriors wore bear skins into battle. They also tended to partake of hallucinogens before battle in order to erase their fears and inhibitions and make them a fierce opponent. When they rushed into the fray looking frightful in the bear skins and hollering insanely, their foes came to associate the bear skins with the outrageous behavior. • When sailing, the greatest speed is attained when the sails are angled so the wind fills them completely. If the captain of the ship wants to stay still rather than going somewhere, he asks the steersman to turn into the wind. Now the wind slips by the sails without filling them and the ship comes to a halt, going nowhere. The Norse were a great seafaring nation, and the Norse word for wind is “loef,” which came into Old English as “loufe.” This is the origin of the word luff, meaning to flap listlessly when the wind is blowing equally on each side of the sail. Add to this the prefix “a” which means “without” (as in “amoral”) and you have a common modern word that means to remain detached, to hold back, or to refrain from becoming involved, just as a ship that is facing into the wind holds back : aloof. • In Norse mythology, Loki’s daughter Hel rules the underworld and “to go to Hel” is to die. You’re likely to go there if you’re a heathen, from the Norse “heioinn” meaning one who lives in the remote and sparsely populated heath. • Off the coast of Norway there’s a chain of islands called the Lofoten Archipelago. A warm coat, a cozy spot to sleep and limited time spent outdoors can keep pets safe during winter.

• Update identification and contact information. Snow and ice can mask scent cues that help pets find their way home. Update contact information and make sure pets’ collars are on tightly. • Keep coolant and antifreeze locked away. Coolant and antifreeze are lethal to dogs and cats and should be kept out of reach. Clean up any spills from vehicles promptly. • Provide fresh food and water. Pets may burn more calories trying to stay warm. Be sure the animal has a little extra food and plenty of water to stay sated and hydrated. Winter weather requires pets owners to make changes so pets can remain happy and safe.

• Keep homes humidified. Going in and out of the house and moving from cold air to dry indoor heat can affect pets’ skin. Itching and flaking may result, causing pets to scratch at such areas. Maintain humidity in the home for comfort. The ASPCA also says to reduce bathing to help preserve essential oils on the skin. • Protect paws outdoors. Pet paws are sensitive to sand, ice, snow, and chemical ice melts. Massage petroleum jelly or another protectant onto paw pads, or consider the use of pet booties. • Keep pets indoors more often. Pets should not remain outdoors for long stretches of time in frigid temperatures, even if they are accustomed to roaming during other seasons, advises The Humane Society of the United States. several forces clash: the Gulf Stream sweeps by the coastline; the islands are separated by narrows only a few miles wide; the ocean floor around the islands is far shallower than in the surrounding sea; the difference between high tide and low tide is about 12 feet (3.6 m); the tide moves in and out at about 12 feet per second; and fierce winds sweep the area. This combination of extreme forces causes wild and dangerous currents in ocean waters. When one mass of water in motion meets another mass of water that’s moving differently, whirlpools form. This happens every day when the tides change in narrow channels. The Lofoten whirlpools are the strongest in the world, being about 30 feet wide and 15 feet deep (9 x 4.5 m), moving in circles at about six nautical miles per hour. They present a very real danger to ships caught in the current. Many ships have succumbed to the strongest tidal currents on Earth that form around the islands, trapping unwary sailors. Norse sailors named this dangerous place “malenstroom” from the words “malen” meaning to grind or whirl around, and “stroom” meaning stream. Today this word has come into our language meaning any violent or turbulent situation: maelstrom. • The Norse “gunne” means “war” and “hildr” means “battle.” Combine the two and you have “Gunnhildr” or “Gunhilda” which became a common name for a girl, meaning “war maiden.” In the mid-1300s, England’s Windsor Castle was defended with a large catapulttype weapon that soldiers nicknamed “Domina Gunilda” or “Lady Gunhilda” in the same way a modern soldier might nickname a large cannon “Big Bertha.” Gunilda then became a term referring to any weapon that launched rocks, arrows, missiles, or bullets from a hollow tube. Over the years, it was shortened to the simpler word “gun.”
