• The word xenia has a variety of meanings. To the ancient Greeks, it was the concept of hospitality, generosity, and courtesy shown to those far from home. To the botanist, it’s Pageeffect 2 the of pollen on a seed. And to those in Ohio, it’s the county seat of Greene County, a community about 21 miles (34 km) from Dayton. • Xystus is an architectural term, referring to a long, covered portico, or main entrance, of ancient Greek gymnasiums. Here, athletes would exercise during inclement weather. To the Romans, the xystus was the garden walkway in front of the porticoes, where they planted flower beds. • Physicians are familiar with two unusual “X” words, xyster and xiphisterna. The xyster is a surgical instrument used for scraping bones, while the xiphisterna refers to the cartilage at the lower end of the body’s sternum, that long flat bone located at the center of the chest. • The Greek word xanthos translates “yellow,” and several of our words use it for a prefix. Xanthophyll is a yellow pigment found along with cholorophyll in green plants. Plants with yellow stems are xanthopous. To those suffering from the abnormal vision condition known as xanthopsia, everything they see seems to have a yellow hue.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

IS MICROCHIPPING WORTH THE COST?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: To save money, I take my two cats, “Betty” and “Wilma,” to a local shot clinic that is held every spring. This year, the tech asked if I wanted my cats microchipped. I said no, because they’re indoor cats and it seems like an unnecessary expense. He looked at me like I was almost a criminal for not saying yes! What do you think? -- Dottie in Knoxville, Tennessee DEAR DOTTIE: It’s entirely your decision whether to microchip your pets, so there was no need for the tech to get all judgmental about it. Since I have your attention, though, allow me to throw some statistics your way. A 2009 study cited by the American Veterinary Medical Association found that dogs without microchips were returned to their owners 22 percent of the time, whereas microchipped dogs were returned 52 percent of the time. Cats without microchips were reunited with their owners less than 2 percent of the time, whereas microchipped cats went back home 38 percent of the time. Now, I know Betty and Wilma are purely indoor cats, which vastly improves their chances for healthy, long lives. However, accidents happen. Doors get left ajar. Thunderstorms roll in. And indoor cats ... get outside. Your cats probably have collars and tags -- and that’s great. But cats are notorious for slipping their collars. While a microchip doesn’t guarantee your cats will be found and reunited with you, it does greatly improve the odds. Microchips have been standardized and data networks greatly improved over the past decade. So, while it is always your choice to microchip your cats, I do think it’s worth the extra cost to do so. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

SPICE BIN

Why not collect food-storage antiques? Food had to be specially prepared to last during the centuries before ice boxes and refrigerators. Long hours were spent smoking, pickling, drying and canning foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables were available only “in season.” Ice boxes were used in the 19th and 20th centuries. A block of ice was cut from a frozen lake then wrapped and stored in a special zinc-lined box. It melted as it cooled, and the housewife had to empty the pan of melted ice water at least once a day.

PHOTO CUTLINE: A country store spice bin shaped like a Pagoda sold for $3,300 because of its rarity, condition and size. The 3-foot-tall lithographed tin Pagoda held six different spices that were ladled into bags by the store clerk in about 1890.

The first electric refrigerator was made in 1911, and by 1923, Frigidaire was selling a home refrigerator. Early refrigerators used freon in the cooling process, but to keep the planet green, the chemical was outlawed in the 1990s. The refrigerator-freezer combination we use today was first sold in 1939. But spices still are used to store, flavor and preserve food. Grocery stores of the 1890s sold spices from a large container, or later, the small-sized tins sometimes used today. A spice display was an important part of the store. A 36-inch-tall Pagoda-shaped spice bin with original paint sold at a Showtime auction in 2015. It was a sixsided tower that held ginger, cinnamon, mustard, cloves, allspice and pepper. The revolving tower had ornate lithographed labels on the tin sections. The rare antique sold for $3,300. If that is too big, look for the small (2- to 3-inch) tins that used to hold spices. The best have unusual graphics. Prices range from $5 to $25. They are still found at house sales, flea markets and online, but rarely at auctions because they are so inexpensive. *** I’m downsizing and want to sell my dining-room furniture. It’s made of maple and is marked “A genuine Cushman Colonial Creation made in Bennington, Vermont.” I have a table with two leaves, hutch, six chairs and a wet sink. How much do you think I can get?

After all his hard work, though, he seemed to be less interested in enjoying the fruits of his labors than in helping others. In 1909 he established the Hershey Industrial School for Orphaned Boys, and 10 years later he donated control of the company to a trust for the school. Today the institution is called the Milton Hershey School, and it continues to have a controlling interest in the candy company. * Southern California has more cars than India has cows. Fabulous Food

REFRESHING DRINKS • In 1934 the Pacific Citrus Products Company wanted to add to their line-up of ice cream toppings, so they invented a fruity syrup. They marketed it to restaurants and soda fountains as a topping, and sold it to ice cream manufacturers as a base for sherbet. • Soda jerks discovered that the syrup, when mixed with water, made a fruit-flavored drink their customers loved. The customers asked the soda jerks where they could buy the drink so they could have it at home, but it wasn’t commercially available. • Seeing the demand, the company began to market the drink in quart bottles and 46-ounce cans. The product, made from seven flavors including pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, and guava, adopted a tropical theme and became increasingly popular. • When sales slumped, the company hired a public relations firm who came up with a new ad campaign that consisted of a cartoon character offering people a drink and then punching them in the face. • They wanted to air the new ad on TV but they couldn’t afford the advertising rates, so in 1962 they bought a single inexpensive spot on “The Tonight Show.” The fruit drink was a product geared towards mothers and children, not the late-night crowd, but the show’s host, Jack Paar, was so surprised by the cartoon hostility that he insisted the director run the ad a second time, for free, so he could make fun of it. This caused an unprecedented run on the product and sales never slowed from there. • What’s the name of the drink? Hawaiian Punch. The main ingredients of the first Hawaiian Punch recipe were shipped from the Hawaiian Islands, thus the origin of the name. Today it’s owned by the Plano, Texas-based Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc. HIDDEN TOBIES IN ISSUE #40 There were 7 Tobies total hiding in the ads.

• Edwin Perkins was 11 years old in 1900 when a friend of his named Kitty showed him a new product, a powdered gelatin called Jell-O. Edwin was fascinated by this. • At age 13 he responded to an ad in the back of a magazine and received a kit giving instructions in how to manufacture pre-packaged foods. Edwin was soon manufacturing all kinds of products and experimenting with new ingredients. • Most of the products he made were things he could create using his own chemistry set. When he grew up, he married Kitty and they went into business together, producing a variety of packaged foods. • One of his most popular products was a drink called Fruit Smack. Made from concentrated fruit syrup, it was mixed with water, poured into bottles, and corked. This was a tedious task, and the bottles often broke during shipping. • Kitty reminded him of the powdered gelatin and wondered if he couldn’t market a powdered drink mix. He experimented with removing all liquid from the fruit syrup, and by 1927 had invented a powdered drink. It went on the market for 10 cents per packet. • During the Great Depression, the price dropped to a nickel a packet and business boomed. By 1950 he had 350 employees at his plant in Chicago. He was 64 years old when he sold out to General Foods in 1953. • Today more than 563 million gallons of his drink mix are consumed every year. What’s it called? Kool-Aid, originally spelled Kool-Ade. Today more than 563 million gallons of it are consumed each year, with the biggest sales being just before and after the 4th of July. The Kool-Aid Man, originally known as the Pitcher Man, first crashed onto the scene in 1975. Over the years, there have been 74 different flavors of Kool-Aid.

It takes a typical glass bottle 4,000 years or more to decompose, even longer if it’s in a landfill. Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to power a 100-watt bulb for four hours.
