Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful sitcom called “Gilligan’s Island.” A THREE SEASON TOUR • In September of 1964, the S.S. Minnow first set out on its fateful three-hour tour when “Gilligan’s Island” premiered. Even though there were only 99 episodes over the course of three seasons, the iconic sitcom about a group of tourists stranded on a deserted island ran in syndication for decades after the show ended, ensuring its popularity among several generations. • The cast included Bob Denver as Gilligan; Alan Hale, Jr, as the Skipper; Jim Backus as Thurston Howell III; Natalie Schafer as Eunice “Lovey” Wentworth Howell; Tina Louise as Ginger Grant; Dawn Wells as Mary Ann Summers; and Russell Johnson as the Professor. • Gilligan’s full name was Willy Gilligan, the Professor’s name was Roy Hinkley, and the Skipper’s name was Jonas Grumby. • Director Sherwood Schwartz picked the name Gilligan randomly out of a phone book. He wanted the show to demonstrate the ridiculous nature of social strata, showing that on a deserted island, there was no class structure and everyone had to work together. Each character represented a different segment of society. • Schwartz had an ongoing feud with head of (continued next page)

To the ancient Greeks, it was the concept of hospitality, generosity, and courtesy shown to those far from home. To the botanist, it’s the effect of pollen on a seed. And to those in Ohio, Page 2 it’s the county seat of Greene County, a community about 21 miles (34 km) from Dayton. • Xystus is an architectural term, referring to a long, covered portico, or main entrance, of ancient Greek gymnasiums. Here, athletes would exercise during inclement weather. To the Romans, the xystus was the garden walkway in front of the porticoes, where they planted flower beds. • Physicians are familiar with two unusual “X” words, xyster and xiphisterna. The xyster is a surgical instrument used for scraping bones, while the xiphisterna refers to the cartilage at the lower end of the body’s sternum, that long flat bone located at the center of the chest. • The Greek word xanthos translates “yellow,” and several of our words use it for a prefix. Xanthophyll is a yellow pigment found along with cholorophyll in green plants. Plants with yellow stems are xanthopous. To those suffering from the abnormal vision condition known as xanthopsia, everything they see seems to have a yellow hue.

THE TINY SHIP WAS TOSSED
the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Newton Minow, who once famously called television programming “a vast wasteland.” Because of the feud, Schwartz named the ship “The S.S. Minnow.” • In the untold backstory, the Skipper and Gilligan were both in the Navy during World War II, serving on a destroyer together. A depth charge got loose and rolled down the deck. It would have crushed the Skipper if Gilligan had not pushed him out of the way, and a friendship was born. • Raquel Welch turned down the role of Mary Ann. Jayne Mansfield turned down the role of Ginger. Jerry Van Dyke, following in the footsteps of his older brother Dick, turned down the role of Gilligan because he didn’t want to be part of an ensemble cast, but preferred to be the star of his own show. Later he was cast as the lead in “My Mother The Car.” Carroll O’Connor, who later became famous for his portrayal of Archie Bunker on “All in the Family” tried out for the part of the Skipper but was turned down. • The pilot was filmed in Hawaii in 1963. In the opening credits, you can see a flag in the harbor flying at half mast, because President John F. Kennedy had just been shot. Although the pilot was filmed in Hawaii, the show itself was filmed on a sound lot in Los Angeles. Scenes taking place on the artificial lagoon could not be filmed during rush hour due to traffic noise from a nearby highway. • Bob Denver was familiar to the American audience after spending five years playing the role of beatnik Maynard G. Krebs in the popular sitcom “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.” Months before Gilligan’s Island hit the airwaves, Bob Denver and Tina Louise costarred in the 1964 summer beach flick “For Those Who Think Young.” • Dawn Wells as Mary Ann was a lot shorter than Tina Louise, who played the glamorous movie star Ginger. Wells insisted on being costumed in short shorts to show off her legs in an era when belly buttons were not shown on TV. (continued on next page)

SPECIAL NEEDS PETS: CAN I ADOPT A HEARTWORM POSITIVE DOG (StatePoint) Every year, an estimated 3.3 million dogs enter U.S. animal shelters, with roughly half that number subsequently adopted by pet owners. These include shelter dogs with special medical needs that can make them harder to place. Dogs with heartworm infection are a common example. What is heartworm disease and how do dogs get it? Heartworm disease is a serious disease spread by infected mosquitoes that is estimated to affect more than one million dogs, cats and ferrets in the U.S. The incidence of heartworm disease in shelter dogs is thought to be higher than in other dogs because stray and surrendered pets are less likely to have received prior veterinary care or to have been on routine heartworm prevention. Meanwhile, natural disasters like hurricanes -- which occur in areas of the country where heartworm rates are already high -- can lead to increased numbers of heartworm-positive pets needing adoption when flooding and pet displacement drive up infection numbers. Not every aspiring pet owner is equipped to provide the extra care a special-needs pet requires; however, with proper treatment, heartworm-positive pets can be excellent candidates for adoption. The American Heartworm Society (AHS) advises prospective adopters to obtain important information from veterinarians and shelter personnel when considering this step. Key points are understanding how heartworm infection is spread, how treatment works and what kind of care owners will be required to give dogs undergoing treatment. What to know when adopting a heartworm-positive dog: • Dogs with heartworm disease can be successfully treated and go on to live normal lives. However, treatment must be initiated as soon as possible to minimize permanent damage to the dog’s heart and arteries. • A dog with heartworm disease cannot directly infect another pet. Nevertheless, an infected, untreated dog can become a source of infection to other pets if it is bitten by a mosquito, so prompt treatment is needed. • Heartworm treatment requires months of therapy and multiple medications administered under a veterinarian’s care. Heartworm treatment can also be costly. Some shelters are able to cover all or some of these costs prior to adoption, while others can’t afford to do so. Dogs undergoing treatment also need to be kept on cage rest to minimize treatment complications. • Dogs can become re-infected if they’re not protected. The AHS recommends year-round heartworm prevention to all pets, as well as annual testing. Fortunately, heartworm prevention is affordable, effective and safe. For more information on understanding heartworm disease in dogs, visit heartwormsociety.org. While heartworm disease is a serious medical condition, compassionate owners who are willing to invest the necessary care and resources in treatment can enable heartworm-positive dogs to live full and happy lives.

It was the first time in television history that short shorts had been worn. • Dawn Wells was crowned Miss Nevada in 1959, and then got a scholarship to attend the University of Washington where she studied theater. Once she graduated, Wells moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career. Her memoir, published in 2014, is entitled, “What Would Mary Ann Do?” • Natalie Schafer, who played Mrs. Howell, was actually 13 years older than Jim Backus, who played Mr. Thurston Howell III. She had a clause in her contract specifying that there would be no close-ups of her face because she didn’t want her wrinkles to show. Despite being in her mid-60s during production, she did all her own stunts, including fainting, falling, being submerged in quicksand, and jumping into the lagoon. • Schafer played the wife of a millionaire but was also a millionaire in real life, having bought properties on Rodeo Drive when they were cheap and turning an impressive profit when she sold them. • When Schafer died at the age of 90 in 1991, she had no children or other heirs so she left much of her fortune to her teacup poodle, with instructions for the rest to go to the Lillian Booth Actor’s Home after the dog died. A wing of the assisted living facility is now named for her. She also reportedly left some of her money to Dawn Wells, who lived with her and cared for her as she struggled through breast cancer. • Skipper, the Howells, and Gilligan were in every single one of the 99 episodes. Ginger, Mary Ann, and the Professor appeared in 98 of the episodes. • Most of the actors were paid on a straight salary with residual income that ceased in 1968, but Dawn Wells insisted on a clause in her contract guaranteeing residuals from syndication in (continued on next page)

perpetuity. The clause was granted because no one imagined the show would still be in syndication 50 years later. Dawn Wells and director Sherwood Schwartz were the only ones who continued to reap rewards from the re-runs. Schwartz reportedly earned about $90 million from the show before his death in 2011. • In 1974, Schwartz attempted to recreate the popularity of Gilligan’s Island using the same scenario in a Wild West setting. The result was “Dusty’s Trail,” about a covered wagon that gets separated from its wagon train and ends up lost in the wilderness. It starred Bob Denver as the bumbling assistant to the wagon master, played by Forrest Tucker (of “F Troop” fame) who is traveling with a rich couple, a brainiac, a farm girl, and a bombshell. The show tanked after one season, though four episodes were stitched together to make the 1976 movie “The Wackiest Wagon Train in the West.” • There was a reunion movie in 1978 called “Rescue from Gilligan’s Island” and another in 1979 called “Castaways on Gilligan’s Island.” Both enjoyed high ratings. The third and final reunion movie, “The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island,” released in 1981, bombed. • Schwartz had plans for a fourth movie in which the castaways learn that a nuclear war has destroyed human civilization. They hear it on the radio, and Gilligan breaks the radio just before a disclaimer comes on saying there was no nuclear war after all. The movie was never made. • Tina Louise (b. 1934) and Dawn Wells (b. 1938) are the only cast members still living.

Parents Finances (cont’d)
What You Should Know About Your Aging Parents Finances Dear Savvy Senior, My siblings and I don’t know much about our elderly parent’s financial situation or their wishes if something happens to them. When mom broke her hip last year, it got me thinking we need to be better prepared. What’s the best way to handle this, and what all should we know? Tentative Daughter Dear Tentative, Many adult children don’t know much about their elderly parent’s financial situation or end-of-life plans, but they need to. Getting up to speed on their finances, insurance policies, long-term care plans and other information is important because some day you might have to help them handle their financial affairs or care, or execute their estate plan after they die. Without this information, your job becomes much more difficult. Here are some tips that can help. Have the Conversation If you’re uncomfortable talking to your parents about this topic, use this column as a prompt or start by talking about your own finances or estate plan as a way to ease into it. Also see TheConversationProject.org, which offers free kits that can help you kick-start these discussions. It’s also a good idea to get your siblings involved too. This can help you head off possible hard feelings, plus, with others involved, your parents will know everyone is concerned. When you talk with your parents, you’ll need to collect some information, find out where they keep key documents and how they want certain things handled when they die or if they become incapacitated. Here’s a checklist of areas to focus on. (continued in next column)
PERSONAL & HEALTH INFORMATION • Contacts: Make a list of names and phone numbers of their doctors, lawyer, accountant, broker, tax preparer, insurance agent, etc. • Medical information: Make a copy of their medical history (any drug allergies, past surgeries, etc.) and a list of medications they take. • Personal documents: Find out where they keep their Social Security card, marriage license, military discharge papers, etc. • Secured places: Make a list of places they keep under lock and key or protected by password, such as online accounts, safe deposit boxes, safe combination, security alarms, etc. • Pets: If they have a pet, what are their instructions for the animal’s care? • End of life: What are their wishes for organ or body donation, and their funeral instructions? If they’ve made pre-arrangements with a funeral home, get a copy of the agreement. LEGAL DOCUMENTS • Will: Do they have an updated will or trust, and where is it located? • Power of attorney: Do they have a power of attorney document that names someone to handle their financial matters if they become incapacitated? • Advance directives: Do they have a living will and a medical power of attorney that spells out their wishes regarding their end-of-life medical treatment? If they don’t have these documents prepared, now’s the time to make them. FINANCIAL RECORDS • Debts and liabilities: Make a list of any loans, leases or debt they have – mortgages owed, car loans, medical bills, credit card debts. Also, make a list of all their credit and charge cards, including the card numbers and contact information. • Financial accounts: Make a list of the banks and brokerage accounts they use (checking, savings, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, IRAs, etc.) and their contact information. • Company benefits: Make a list of any retirement plans, pensions or benefits from their former employers including the contact information of the benefits administrator. • Insurance: Make a list of the insurance policies they have (life, long-term care, home, auto, Medicare, etc.) including the policy numbers, agents and phone numbers. • Property: Make a list of the real estate, vehicles or other properties they own, rent or lease and where they keep the deeds, titles and loan or lease agreements. • Taxes: Find out where they keep copies of past year’s tax returns. He was athletic and joined the swim team. • Although he was a good swimmer, he didn’t have the right body build to win top honors. Then a friend suggested he look into a new sport called fin swimming. In fin swimming, competitors use various types of swim fins to run races either on the surface or submerged, either with snorkels, SCUBA gear, or nothing at all. Karapetyan excelled at it. • Within six months of beginning his training, he had become master fin swimmer of the Soviet Union; two months later he was master of the international class; and six months after that Did you hear about the family who got stuck he was the European fin swimming champion on Peter Pan’s Flight for over 3 hours? having broken 11 world records. A Life Line for Pets in Western New York. 3rd Quarter 2016 Week 30
A LIFELINE FOR PETS
OUR MISSION STATEMENT: To provide a one-time grant of money to help pay for life saving medical treatment for pets whose caring, responsible owners are not able to pay for the care their pet needs due to low income, personal crisis, or disaster. Payments will be made directly to the medical care provider. All4PetsWNY does not cover exam fees, diagnostic testing (blood work, x-rays, etc.) vaccinations, or spay and neuter operations.
The 2003 census showed 65 million dogs and 77 million cats living in the US. The majority of today’s pet owners think of their pets as members of their family. They want to do everything to give their pets a long, happy, and healthy life. Unfortunately, the cost of many modern 1. possible 3 life-saving operations is too steep to afford without insurance. 2. “Peter Pan’s Flight” WHAT INSPIRED US TO START ALL4PETSWNY? We were made aware of a very sad situation. A mother and her young child brought their young and otherwise healthy pet for a treatable medical condition. After spending $800 trying to treat the animal with medicine, they realized surgery would be neccessary. The mother had a life threatening illness of her own and had just been informed her health care provider would no longer cover her treatments. They could no longer afford to pay for the pets care and he was euthanized. We started All4PetsWNY to save lives, one at a time, and to help caring pet owners re Academy Awards and nominations than any other person in history – 22 Awards and 59 nominations keep their pets in tough times.
• Doing Research: The list of what is tax deductible is more extensive than you might realize, so do your research. Keeping good records throughout the year of your expenditures can help you take advantage of these opportunities.
• Having a Refund Plan: Don’t just let your checking account absorb your tax refund only to spend it on an impulse buy. Whether you invest the money in your retirement, sock it safely away for a rainy day or put it towards the purchase of a big-ticket item, such as the down payment of a house, having a plan for your tax refund can help you make the most of the money. This year, have a fuss-free tax season. With a little planning, you can file your taxes efficiently, without headache and at the greatest benefit to your finances.

• There had been a pickpocket on board the trolley who wanted to be let off. When the driver refused, the thief hit him in the head, knocking him out, and sending the trolley into the lake. It came to rest 80 feet (25 m) from the shore at a depth of 33 feet (10 m). • Karapetyan jumped into the lake, yelling for his brother to help. Using the trolley’s electrical antenna to guide him, he swam to the trolley and kicked out a window. The glass cut his legs. He reached in, grabbed someone, then launched himself off the roof of the trolley towards the surface. He handed the person off to his brother on the surface, who loaded the victim onto one of the boats that had responded. Karapetyan took five deep breaths and returned for another victim. • He did this 35 times, taking about 30 seconds for each trip. Silt obscured his vision. Once he grabbed a loose seat, a fact that haunts him today: “I could have saved another person.” • Finally, rescue teams handed him a rope and asked him to fasten it to the trolley. He broke out a second window, and threaded the rope through the two broken windows. The trolley was hauled to the surface within 45 minutes of the crash, but it was too late. Of the 35 people Karapetyan rescued, 20 survived. • Karapetyan spent 45 days comatose with sepsis and pneumonia which ended his athletic career. The USSR hushed up the disaster but offered him a reward equal to about a week’s pay, which he refused. • In 1982 a Russian tabloid ran an article about his heroic rescue. He received 60,000 fan letters. In 1978, an asteroid belt was named after him. Today he lives in Moscow where he owns and manages a shoe store called “Second Breath.” Karapetyan later received a UNESCO “Fair Play” award for his heroism.

• The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest roadway bridges in the U.S. It connects Manhattan and Brooklyn, spanning the East River. Construction started in 1869 and it was completed 14 years later. It has a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m). Over 600 laborers worked on the bridge, and 27 of them died during construction. The bridge cost $15 million, equivalent to $320 million today. • To construct the bridge pilings under water, engineers dropped huge metal tanks to the sea floor and then pumped compressed air into them. Divers would descend to the air-filled tanks, where they could work freely on the footings. But when the workers rose to the surface of the water again, they frequently had sudden attacks of joint pain, which caused them to walk stiffly bent over. • In the fashion of the day, women tended to wear corsets that were so tightly laced that they were unable to stand up straight. This posture was called the “Grecian Bend.” Because the stance of the deep sea workers resembled the posture, they too were said to have the Grecian Bend. The term was shortened and is now called “the bends.” • John Roebling was the engineer, but when his foot was crushed by a ferry, he contracted tetanus and died, whereupon his son took over. When his son was so incapacitated by the bends that he could no longer work, his wife Emily took over. When the bridge was finished, she was the first to cross it. • On opening day, the mayors of Brooklyn and Manhattan met in the center and locked arms as part of a spectacular celebration. Special trains had brought thousands from Long Island and Philadelphia to see the novel bridge. In the first day alone, 150,300 people made the crossing. • It was by far the longest bridge in the world at (continued on next page)

Particularly damaging to the environment are balloons often released in celebratory clusters. On a beach clean-up in 2003, volunteers collected over 4,000 Mylar and latex balloons from New Jersey beaches. It’s estimated that 70% of all balloons released on the Eastern Seaboard will end up in the ocean, where not only the balloons but also their strings end up killing whales, dolphins, seals, and turtles.

THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE (cont’d)
• The bridge was suspended 135 feet (41 m) above the water, and terrified pedestrians were convinced the bridge was about to collapse. They scrambled for the exit, trampling one another, and trapping people against the iron fences that lined the narrow promenade. Twelve people died on the stairs, and more than 35 were wounded. • The following year, P.T. Barnum reassured the public of the bridge’s safety (while publicizing his circus) by leading a parade of 21 elephants and 17 camels over the bridge to prove the sturdiness of the construction. The bridge actually had a capacity of 18,700 tons, or over 2,500 African elephants. • More than 150,000 vehicles, 4,000 pedestrians, and 3,100 cyclists cross the Brooklyn Bridge each day. So rest assured next time you cross the Brooklyn Bridge, but please be careful on the stairs.
the time, and 50% longer than any suspension (continued next page) bridge ever attempted. In the previous decades, dozens of failed suspension and iron bridges had collapsed around Europe and the U.S., killing hundreds. Since this was the first suspension bridge to use steel cables, it was new, unproven technology. • Tragedy struck only six days after the bridge was opened to the public. On May 30, 1883 a woman tripped and fell while descending the wooden stairs on the Manhattan side of the bridge. Apparently, this caused another woman to scream at the top of her lungs, which caused those nearby to rush towards the scene to see what was wrong. The commotion sparked a chain reaction of confusion, as more and more people panicked and mobbed the narrow staircase, creating a massive pileup. Thousands were on the promenade, turning the situation deadly.

Advertising signs are popular collectibles at antique shows, but some are sold as art at galleries or auctions. Travel posters, French art deco wine ads, art nouveau ads by Alfred Mucha, magazine covers by Rockwell Kent, pictures from calendars by Maxfield Parrish and many other commercial prints are valuable. Also high-priced are ads that might seem worthless, but are decorative or conversation pieces. Wm Morford Auctions had a successful advertising sale that included a life-size cutout of a woman with bobbed hair, a straight dress and low-heeled shoes called “Mary Janes.” The PHOTO CUTLINE: This charming sign was promoting light lady from the 1920s is promoting bulbs in a box labeled Edison-Mazda lamps (light bulbs) “Edison Mazda lamps.” in a store. The life-size stand-up The clothes, size and brand sign looks real and probably name, plus its almoststopped many customers. She was perfect condition, made this kept in a shipping box until store display desirable and recently, when she was auctioned for $775. dated as circa 1920s. The sign sold for $775. General Electric registered the Mazda name in 1909. Before that date, every light bulb company used a different metal base and a carbon filament inside the glass bulb. GE used a tungsten filament that gave more light, but cost more. They licensed the Mazda name, socket size and filament technology to other companies, and the Edison Company used them. The EdisonMazda name was used until 1945. The name Mazda still is used for automobile lights and batteries. ***

: I inherited my grandparents’ table, buffet and bookcase. I think they’re walnut and they haven’t been refinished. They were in my mother’s basement for over 40 years and there is some mold on them. What is the best way to treat these pieces without damaging them?
A
: To avoid breathing mold spores, be sure to wear a dust mask and safety goggles. Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and brush attachment to remove any loose mold. Then, clean the surface with a solution of dishwashing detergent and warm water. Scrub gently with a sponge, cloth or brush, being careful not to soak the wood. You can use bleach or a mold killer, but be sure to test it on an inconspicuous place on the furniture before using it. Rinse with a clean cloth dipped in water and wrung out. Dry the furniture with another clean cloth. If mold remains, the spot may need to be sanded. A combination vacuum-sander should be used. After the wood is completely dry, you can polish it. *** CURRENT PRICES Terra cotta sculpture, sitting man, braiding ropes, long gloves, 10 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches, $70.
