INDOOR TENT
It’s been estimated that a typical dog is about as smart as a two-year-old child. Come along with Tidbits as we test the intelligence of dogs! CANINE IQ • In a test, a white block indicated a place where there was food hidden, while black blocks showed places where there was no food. In a series of trials, it took Malamutes over 100 tries to figure out the meaning of the different blocks, to the point where they would make a beeline for the white block and ignore the black blocks. However, wolves learned in only fifty tries. • In another test, dogs were placed in a maze that had a central point with eight arms radiating outwards. A treat was placed at the end of each of the eight arms. Would dogs be able to remember which arms they had already visited once? Or would they go down the same arms over and over again? It turned out that dogs were efficient at finding the treats 83% of the time. However, rats subjected to the same test were accurate 90% of the time. • Engineers constructing a natural gas pipeline were worried about persistent leaks that they could not locate because the pipe was buried up to 40 ft. deep (12 m). Trained dogs were called in, and they found and identified over 150 leaks. (continued next page)

To the ancient Greeks, it was the concept of hospitality, generosity, and courtesy shown to those far from home. To the botanist, it’s the effect of pollen on a seed. And to those in Ohio, Page 2 it’s the county seat of Greene County, a community about 21 miles (34 km) from Dayton. • Xystus is an architectural term, referring to a long, covered portico, or main entrance, of ancient Greek gymnasiums. Here, athletes would exercise during inclement weather. To the Romans, the xystus was the garden walkway in front of the porticoes, where they planted flower beds. • Physicians are familiar with two unusual “X” words, xyster and xiphisterna. The xyster is a surgical instrument used for scraping bones, while the xiphisterna refers to the cartilage at the lower end of the body’s sternum, that long flat bone located at the center of the chest. • The Greek word xanthos translates “yellow,” and several of our words use it for a prefix. Xanthophyll is a yellow pigment found along with cholorophyll in green plants. Plants with yellow stems are xanthopous. To those suffering from the abnormal vision condition known as xanthopsia, everything they see seems to have a yellow hue.

CANINE IQ (cont’d) • John Pilley adopted a border collie puppy named Chaser and decided to see how many words she could learn. Every day he taught her one or two new words, mostly relating to various toys. Was there a limit to the number of words she could learn? Would she forget old words as new words crowded her brain? As a retired psychology professor, Pilley wanted to know. • He would hold up the object, name it, and then command Chaser to find it or to hide it. Over the course of three years, Chaser learned the names of over 800 stuffed toys, 116 different balls, 26 Frisbees, and over 100 various plastic objects. There were no duplicate items; each thing differed in size, weight, texture, design, and material. She was tested every day, often out of sight of Pilley, to be sure she wasn’t getting subconscious hints from him. • Even after learning the names of over 1,000 objects, she never forgot a word, and never slowed the rate at which she could learn new words. She could also tell the difference between items that were her toys and items that were not toys. At times he would tell Chaser to fetch an item that the dog had never before seen, and whose name was unknown to the dog. Chaser would use her powers of deduction to identify the correct item: “There’s only one item here that I don’t know the name of, so that must be what he wants.” • Another researcher named Juliane Kaminski went one step further with her border collie, Rico. After Rico had learned the names of hundreds of toys and other objects, Kaminski showed the dog either a photo or a drawing of the specific item she wanted Rico to fetch for her. Rico understood the connection between the depiction of the item and the real thing and brought the correct item time after time. • Dogs have different growls depending on the situation. A “don’t steal my food” growl is different from a “who is that stranger?” growl. Researchers recorded different kinds of growls, and then played them for other dogs under various circumstances. When dogs were ap(continued on next page)

6 REASONS TO SPAY OR NEUTER PETS NOW
The Woodlands | 6237 South Transit | Lockport, NY 14094 • (855) 336-8858
Upon adopting a companion animal, one of the first decisions pet parents should make, advise veterinarians and animal welfare experts, is to spay or neuter their new friend. Homeless animals are a global problem. Overpopulation continues to plague dogs and cats, and there are as many as 300,000 homeless animals euthanized in animal shelters every year, says The Humane Society of the United States. While many would be quick to assume these are puppies and kittens of “street” animals, the society notes that euthanized animals are often the offspring of family pets — even pure breeds. Spaying females and neutering males is the most effective method of birth control for these popular pets. Preventing unwanted offspring might be the main reason many pet owners spay or neuter their pets. But there are many additional reasons that make spaying and neutering a good decision. 1. The ASPCA says spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast tumors that are malignant in roughly 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Spaying before a cat’s first heat is ideal. 2. USA Today reports that neutered male dogs live 18 percent longer than dogs that were not neutered, while spayed female dogs live 23 percent longer than those that are not spayed. Neutering reduces the instinct to roam and get into trouble, which may contribute to the longer life expectancy. 3. Neutering can help prevent testicular cancer in male pets. 4. Spayed females will not go into heat. During heat, Did you hear about the family who got stuck which can occur four to five days at a time every three on Peter Pan’s Flight for over 3 hours? weeks during mating season, females may yowl and Apparently, their vehicle would nevernever land. urinate around the house. 5. WebMD says non-neutered male dogs and cats may mark their territory with urine and can be more aggressive during mating seasons. Neutering can help calm the animals. 6. HSUS states that neutering and spaying is the best way to prevent overpopulation and improves the chances that shelter pets will be adopted. CANINE IQ (cont’d) proaching a juicy bone and heard the “don’t steal my food growl” they backed off far more regularly than when they heard the “who is that stranger?” growl. • Similarly, they recorded the barking of a dog who was bored, then recorded barking when the dog was alarmed at a stranger. When these recordings were played for other dogs, they ignored the “I’m lonely” barks but reacted to the “stranger approaching” barks. • Dogs were introduced to two boxes that were identical in all but one respect: one box had a string of bells attached to it that rang when jiggled. The other box had a string of bells whose clappers had been removed so they made no sound. The dogs were tested by watching a human put a treat under both boxes, and then the dogs were told they were not allowed to snitch the treats. As long as another human remained in the room, no dogs bothered the treats. But when the humans left the room, the dogs went to steal a treat, and all of them swiped the treat from the box with the silent bells, showing that they understood who was within hearing distance and how they might respond. • Dogs were placed in a room with two people, both of whom had treats to share. One person had a gag over their mouth, while the other was blindfolded. Which person would the dogs go to in order to beg for a treat? Not surprisingly, they went to the person with a gag and ignored the person with a blindfold, demonstrating that (continued on next page)

smart home devices that can help seniors age in place Dear Savvy Senior, I recently read an article about how “smart home” devices can help seniors with aging-in-place. What types of smart home products can you recommend that can help with this? Inquiring Senior Dear Inquiring, There are actually a wide variety of affordable smart home devices you can add to your home that can help make it safer and easier to live in as you age. Here’s what you should know. Smart Home Technologies While most Americans today use technology and enjoy the conveniences they provide, there are millions of seniors who still don’t have much use for it. But you don’t have to like technology or be tech savvy to benefit from the many different smart home automation devices that can help seniors age-in-place. Smart home devices can also give family members and caregivers the ability to electronically keep tabs on their elder loved one when they can’t be there, which provides peace-of-mind. If you’re interested in adding some smart home products to your house, you need to know that these devices require home Wi-Fi, and for many of the products, you’ll need either a smartphone, tablet or voice-enabled assistant to operate them. Here are some popular aging-in-place smart home products to help you get started. Voice-enabled assistant: Popular products like the Amazon Echo (Amazon.com/echo), Google Assistant (Assistant.google.com) or Apple HomePod (Apple. com/homepod) will let you operate compatible smart home products with simple voice commands. These devices can also play your favorite music, read audiobooks, make calls, set timers and alarms, provide reminders for medications, appointments and other things, check traffic and weather, ask questions, and much more – all done by voice commands. Smart lights: Falls are common concerns among elderly seniors, which are often caused by fumbling around a dark room looking for a light switch. Smart light bulbs like the Philips Hue (MeetHue.com) can turn on and off the lights by voice command, smartphone or tablet. These bulbs can also dim the lights and you can program them to turn on and off whenever you want. There are also smart electric plugs like the Wemo Mini (Wemo.com) that offer remote control automation for lamps, fans, or other electrical devices. Video doorbell: Safety is also a concern for seniors who live alone. Smart doorbells like the Ring video doorbell (Ring.com) would allow you to see, hear and speak to someone at the door (via smartphone, tablet, Google smart displays, Amazon Echo Show or Spot) without having to open it. (continued in next column)
CANINE IQ (cont’d) • Most dogs are unable to pass a simple test where they were placed behind a barrier with a treat on the other side. There was a hole in the barrier they could pass through to get the treat, which they learned quite quickly. But when the hole in the barrier was shifted to a different place, dogs continued to return to the place where the hole had been previously, rather than go to the place where the hole currently appeared. It took several trials before they learned the new position of the hole. Wolves had no issue in seeing where the gap in the barrier was located. • In a study, a man stood on a street corner, smiling at women, telling them they were pretty, and asking for their phone number. If he stood on the street corner alone, he was successful in getting their phone number 9% of the time. But if he had a dog with him on a leash, his success rate jumped to 28%. Then he tried it different ways: dressed nattily with the dog in a matching cute collar and leash, or dressed in rags with the dog in a spiked collar with only a frayed rope for a leash. The manner of dress didn’t make much of a difference, but further experiments showed that a cute golden retriever puppy increased the interaction level over a big full-grown Rottweiler. • Experiments when people have reared wolf pups like dogs have shown that the wolves will bond with the human and even learn basic dog commands when they are young, but will revert to wolf-like behavior as adults, becoming difficult or impossible to control, while also threatening to kill other animals such as cats and chickens, threatening people outside of their “pack,” and often even stalking children as if they were stalking prey. When removed from human contact for even a short period, they will revert to their wolf-like ways almost immediately.

Stovetop shut-off: To help seniors prevent home cooking fires, stovetop shut-off devices like the IGuardStove (IGuardFire.com) uses motion sensors to turn off electric and gas stovetops when left unattended for a predetermined amount of time. It will also alert family members via text.

Medication management: Seniors on a complex medication schedule can benefit from a smart medication tracking system like the PillDrill (PillDrill. com) that reminds you when pills are due, tracks that you’ve taken them, and notifies loves ones. Home monitoring: Family members can keep tabs on older loved ones from afar with smart home video cameras like Lighthouse Al (Light.house/elderly-care) or a smart home sensor system like TruSense (MyTruSense.com). Other options: Some other helpful smart home products to consider include smart door locks like Kwikset Kevo (Kwikset.com), smart thermostats such as the Nest (Nest.com), and smart nightlights like Aladin (Domalys.com), which detects falls and alerts caregivers. The costs for most smart home products range anywhere from a few dollars to several hundred dollars and can be found in many local home improvement stores as well as online. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

• In 1971, workers in the town of Changsha in the province of Hunan in China were digging out an area to build a new bomb shelter next to a hospital when they encountered something remarkable. They called in over 1,500 high school students to help excavate the discovery, and then they called in archaeologists. They had discovered the tomb of Xin Zhui, her husband Li Cang, and a third person thought to be their son. • Of the three bodies, Xin Zhui’s was in extraordinarily remarkable condition. Because Li Cang had ruled over the fiefdom of Dai during the Han dynasty of ancient China, Xin Zhui’s mummified remains were dubbed “Lady Dai.” • Tests revealed that Lady Dai had died in the Did you hear about the family who got stuck yearon Peter Pan’s Flight for over 3 hours? 163 BC, so her remains were 2,135 years oldApparently, their vehicle would neverat the time they were uncovered. Unfortunately, the cost of many modern 1. possible 3 life-saving operations is too steep to afford without insurance. 2. “Peter Pan’s Flight” WHAT INSPIRED US TO START ALL4PETSWNY? We were made aware of a very sad situation. A mother and her young child brought their young and otherwise healthy pet for a treatable medical condition. After spending $800 trying to treat the animal with medicine, they realized surgery would be neccessary. The mother had a life threatening illness of her own and had just been informed her health care provider would no longer cover her treatments. They could no longer afford to pay for the pets care and he was euthanized. We started All4PetsWNY to save lives, one at a time, and to help caring pet owners re Academy Awards and nominations than any other person in history – 22 Awards and 59 nominations keep their pets in tough times.

MIRACLE MYLAR
COULD ABDOMINAL MIGRAINE CAUSE CYcLIC VOMITING? DEAR DR. ROACH: My son started having gastrointestinal problems in high school. Approximately three years ago, they became so intense that he couldn’t work. Last May, he finally had surgery for gastric reflux. This helped with the persistent vomiting, but he is still experiencing intractable nausea. After a year of tests and trials of every anti-nausea medication known, he finally was told that he has cyclic vomiting syndrome. He also was told, basically, “We don’t know how to treat it.” He currently is on a trial of a tricyclic antidepressant, but wasn’t given much hope that it would help. Could you suggest any possible treatment? He is only 28, and I can’t imagine him living with this and not being able to work or participate in life forever after. -- M.S. ANSWER: Cyclic vomiting syndrome is best described in children, but is certainly described in adults. It is called “cyclic” because there are periods of multiple vomiting episodes (lasting from one day to a week) interspersed with periods of completely normal health. Children have 12 cycles per year on average, while adults have four. CVS has been associated with migraine headaches, and treatment for migraines is sometimes successful in treating CVS, so it’s possible CVS represents a variant of abdominal migraine. CVS is a difficult diagnosis to make, as it can be easily confused with other causes of recurrent vomiting. Both children and adults often go a long time with incorrect diagnoses, sometimes getting surgeries, like your son did. Treatment should be administered by a clinician experienced in this condition, and unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case with your son. In one series, 3 in 17 adults with CVS had a complete response to tricyclic antidepressants, but 13 had at least some response. So I would hold out more than just a little hope for some benefit. Other medications that have been tried include sumatriptan (normally used for migraine), ketorolac (a powerful anti-inflammatory medicine) and prochlorperazine (usually used for nausea, and I’m sure your son would have tried it). I would strongly suggest you contact the Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association to get more information and suggestions for an expert in your area, at www. cvsaonline.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have noticed that the medical profession uses a number of standard words in different ways. For example, “negative” is usually good, and “positive” often is bad news. -- N.M.G. ANSWER: It’s true that we in medicine use words differently than they are used conversationally. “Negative” and “positive” are examples: We would like the biopsy to be negative for cancer, and if the HIV test is positive, that’s not good. Doctors also use the word “complaint” to describe the patient’s chief concern; it’s not that we think people are being annoying. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Can skim milk or oat bran cause gas? -- J.R. ANSWER: Both certainly can cause gas. Skim milk contains the milk sugar lactose, to which many people are intolerant. In mild cases, it causes some gas; severe cases can cause diarrhea. Oat bran is a good fiber source, and all good sources of fiber can cause gas, especially if taken in amounts that are greater than the person is used to. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. • Mylar is an extraordinarily strong polyester film developed by DuPont in the early 1950s. By the 1970s, it had become DuPont’s bestselling film. • Technically speaking, Mylar is biaxiallyoriented polyethylene terephthalate. Mylar is an American brand name; other countries call the same product BoPET from the initials of its chemical composition. Basically, it’s a polyester film made from stretching its components of polyethylene terephthalate until the individual molecules line up and lock into place. This gives the material extraordinary tensile strength. It’s nearly impossible to tear or stretch a sheet of Mylar. • Mylar cannot be torn or chipped, but it can be bent and folded. It will not deteriorate with age. It can bond to most materials such as wood, metal, cloth, paper, leather, and plastics. It’s heat resistant and can withstand temperatures from -80F to 300F. Mylar is impervious to chemical reactions; will not conduct electricity; and has excellent insulating properties. It forms an impenetrable barrier for moisture and air. • All of these phenomenal properties make Mylar attractive to companies who package food. The primary enemies of food preservation are insects, temperature swings, moisture, and air. Mylar helps protect against all of these: bugs cannot chew through it. It helps protect the food from temperature changes. Most importantly, it keeps humidity and oxygen out much more efficiently than regular plastic does. Plastic baggies “breathe”; Mylar does not. • Mylar is used in thousands of ways in our modern world. When bonded to a thin sheet of aluminum, it forms a metallic material that reflects 98% of the light that hits it, while also reflecting heat. (continued on next page)

In 1985 the average consumption of bottled water averaged 5.4 gallons per year, mostly from water coolers in offices. Individual servings of bottled water came on the market in the 1990s. By 2007 average annual consumption per person had risen to an average of 29 gallons per year, resulting in a billion plastic bottles being discarded each year. Consumption of bottled water in 2017 reached 13.7 billion gallons.

Football Fiesta (cont’d)
MIRACLE MYLAR
Slow-Cooked Football Fiesta The Super Bowl is upon us, and the big game is the perfect time to serve burritos. As a Texan, I’ve had a long love affair with both football and tortillas. A tortilla is the perfect foundation for any number of dishes, from spicy enchiladas and crunchy tacos to my personal guilty pleasure, veggie-stuffed burritos. The “Diccionario de Mexicanismos” has an entry for the burrito as early as 1895. A “burro” is a donkey, and burrito means “little donkey.” There are many folklore stories about how burritos got their name. Some compare the shape of a burrito to a donkey’s ears or the packs and bedrolls donkeys carried. But it’s a proven fact that burritos are the perfect way to meld together flavorful ingredients in a handheld package. There are a few tricks to making the classic burrito:

Don’t Be Fooled ... Decide at Clydes!
Football Fiesta (cont’d) several ways to heat up the tortillas. You can heat each individual tortilla for 5 to 8 seconds on low on both sides, directly on the heating element on the stove top. You also can wrap them in foil and place them in the oven on 375 F to 400 F for 10 minutes; or steam them in damp, food-safe paper towels in the microwave for 10 seconds. * Make sure the tortilla is at least twice as big as the contents you’ll put into it. When you fold the tortilla in half, with the contents inside, both ends should be able to touch with room to spare. * Join the front and rear flap and quickly lift the tortilla into the air to compress the contents. Make sure to keep the contents of the burrito in the tortilla. Set it back down again, open faced. * Pull the left flap of the tortilla over the burrito contents, toward the center. Pull the right flap of the tortilla over the burrito contents, toward the center. Your tortilla flaps probably won’t overlap at this point. Don’t pull too hard on the ends of the flaps as you fold them over to the center. This could rip the tortilla. * Tuck the top flap of the tortilla underneath the burrito contents, pulling all of the burrito contents toward your body, into the center of the burrito. * Starting from your body and moving outward, roll (continued in next column)
SLOW-COOKED BURRITO FILLING You can put this filling into a bowl instead of a tortilla, if desired, and finish it with your favorite toppings. 1 to 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, chicken thighs or a mix, cut into 2-inch pieces 2 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder, 1 tablespoon cumin 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 (14.5-ounce) can hot or medium diced tomatoes with jalapeño peppers, plus juice 1 cup chicken stock, divided, plus more if needed 1 cup instant brown rice 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 cup frozen corn 8 large burrito-style tortillas Optional toppings: shredded cheese, chopped cilantro, sour cream, diced avocado, salsa, hot sauce, diced green onions, shredded lettuce 1. Combine the chicken pieces and the oil together in the bowl of a 2 1/2- to 3 1/2-quart slow cooker. Mix the chicken with the chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper and the can of diced tomatoes with peppers and juice. Mix until all the pieces are coated with the spices. 2. Add 1/2 cup of the chicken stock or more as needed to make sure the chicken is covered. Cover with the lid and cook on low for 3 to 4 hours. 3. Remove the lid and add the instant brown rice, black beans, frozen corn and the remaining chicken broth. Replace the lid and continue cooking on low for another 30 to 40 minutes. Check the rice periodically, stirring once or twice to make sure the rice cooks evenly and adding more chicken broth if the mixture seems dry. 4. Cooking is done when the rice is tender. If the rice is done while there is still liquid left in the slow cooker, remove the lid and cook on high to let the liquid evaporate. Roll the chicken filling and your choice of optional ingredients into a warm tortilla and form a burrito, or put the filling into a bowl, or into some warm, pre-made hard-shell tacos and add your choice of toppings. Serves 6 to 8. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. • The familiar “space blankets” are made of foil-bonded Mylar. NASA uses this material to make weather balloons. A five-layer sandwich of it in space suits protects astronauts from radiation and temperature swings. It’s used as solar sails in outer-space aircraft. It’s built into aluminized suits to protect urban firefighters, and in protective emergency heat-shielding fire shelters for wildland firefighters. It’s found in the reflective backing of solar panels; in insulation for homes; in heat-reflecting curtains for the home; as a protective film to prevent glass from shattering; and in solar ovens to concentrate heat. That shiny fold-out reflector that you put in your car’s windshield on hot summer days is Mylar. • Because it is so effective at extending the shelf-life of foods, Mylar is used extensively in the food packaging industry. That foil lid on your yogurt cup is not foil at all, but Mylar. The cellophane film on top of your TV dinner that doesn’t melt in the microwave isn’t really cellophane; it’s Mylar. The big roasting bag that surrounds your Thanksgiving turkey in the oven is also made of Mylar. Look at the packaging of the coffee beans or cookies or potato chips you just bought: if it looks like foil, but you cannot tear it; if it looks like cellophane but it won’t melt, it’s Mylar. Mylar bags are also used to preserve medical products, seeds, and tissue samples that are sensitive to changes in moisture and oxygen. Mylar balloons and kites are also very popular, although they are not biodegradable and will never deteriorate. • If you’re lost in the desert, huddling under a Mylar space blanket will keep the heat away, protect you from UV radiation, and trap moisture escaping from your body, cutting down on the chances of dehydration.
