a word from the editor Hey everyone, what a hectic month of November; wet-bikes, reviews, rain, Toy Run, rain, crime-run, rain, photo-shoots ... did I forget to mention rain! Yip it’s that time of year again where everything comes to a standstill or not and people stop working or not and everyone goes on holiday or not ... it’s the Festive Season!! Time to take a load off, relax have fun spoil yourself and the fam little, you deserve it. In this last issue for 2007 we’ve tried our very best to make it interesting with a super selection of dealers showcasing their products for your picking and a bit of news from the latest in KZN biking. Aprilia is at last opening their shop doors to the public; it’s about time the brand gets a kick in the but not to mention the new BMW dealer opening up in Hillcrest. The long awaited 2008 Busa starts hitting our local market and bike sales in general are picking up, no thanks to the new credit act which after all turned out to be a good thing. Also featured is our very first Wet Bike breakfast-run / review and adding to the mix a review on the very powerful Kawasaki KFX 450 Quad, a very useful Hyosung GT650R and then my favourite for the month the Yamaha VX110 Wet Bike. There is loads of info in the mag as you’ll soon find out, really useful stuff to help you find what you need, so keep it handy. Early in the New Year a few of the favourite rallies are lined-up as well as a good couple of Rider Training Courses to get you on your way safely. Keep an eye on the Calendar for up-coming courses that’ll tickle your fancy and get trained. We’ve already trained a substantial amount of people and believe that it is making a difference out there, the demand certainly exists. I even paid a visit to the local boys of East Coast Choppers, what an experience ... Bike Talk Cape Town will be launched soon and it will be a huge success just like the KZN version turned out to be, just bigger and better ... hold your thumbs. Here’s to good reading, spending money, a great Festive Season and a Super 2008 for you and yours, please be safe out there wherever your travels might take you ...

keeping it up

Oh No! It’s Raining

It’s 8AM Monday morning and you peer out your bedroom window. Although the weatherman on TV had announced the night before that clear skies were in today’s forecast, dark grey rain clouds are looming in the distance. While sipping on your morning cup-a-coffee, you try to estimate just how soon they’ll be hovering over your home and contemplate thoughts to yourself such as, ‘If I leave now, maybe, just maybe I’ll be able to make it in to work without getting wet.’ After all, that shiny bike of yours, sitting in the garage all night is begging for you to take it for another spin. You glance back up at the clouds and decide that yet again, you will chance it and ride on into work. In case luck is not on your side, here are some tips on how to prepare for riding in the rain and to keep yourself as dry and as safe as possible without having to succumb to driving to work in a cage. Let’s begin! In an ideal situation, you’ll have invested in some all weather riding gear including waterproof boots and if that’s the case then good for you! The minimum investment you should have on hand when it comes to rain gear is waterproof gloves that fasten securely around your wrist. Not only do gloves keep your hands dry during a rainstorm, but they’ll also help keep them warm too. Another option is purchasing a rain suit to wear over your leathers if you don’t have all weather gear. Waterproof your boots prior to riding in the rain as an extra precaution. However if you still don’t want to spend a few extra tom on a rain suit and waterproofing boot spray, then another, low-cost option is to wear a couple of large trash bags over your clothing and plastic grocery bags inside your boots wrapped around your socks to help with rain-proofing yourself. Riding in the rain is not fun, but it’s even worse if you get soaked. Tyres with a good tread pattern on them are the safest type to use when it’s raining. This is because, there’s more rubber to grip the slippery road. Still, even with decent tread on the tyres, pushing your two-wheeler to the limits in the rain, be it a drizzle or a downpour, is not advised unless you want to hydroplane or worse yet, lay your bike down in front of oncoming traffic. Oil and diesel on the road tends to loosen up and sit on the surface during the start of the rain, so allow a solid 15 minutes or so for cars to splash the excess muck off onto the side of the street. Otherwise, you’re just asking for trouble! Steer clear of the painted lines on streets and hi-ways because they become extremely slick when wet. Common sense should encourage you to ride in the path of the tyre trails left by vehicles in front of you since it will be the area on the road with the least amount of water on it. Manhole covers and railroad tracks are very slick when wet too. Avoid them if at all possible, but if you must cross over them, approach with caution keeping a steady throttle. To help eliminate rain from building up on your visor and impairing your vision, there are a few products on the market you can apply prior to riding such as Mr. Min. This product and products like it encourage the water to roll and bounce right off of the visor. Your visor may also indeed become foggy while riding in the rain and although there are products on the market to help prevent that too, just cracking your visor open a smidge every now and again will help quickly eliminate this problem. Though motorcycle riders generally avoid riding in the rain at all costs for obvious reasons, there is still that rare occasion that may sneak up on you and leave you in a compromising situation. Be prepared and alert so that you’ll still be around to ride on future dry weather days as well!

Knobblies - Are they worth it? Written by John Briscoe of Gear Up Motorcycle Accessories

A rear tyre costing R1450-00 is not an easy pill to swallow especially when it only lasts some guys as little as 1000 k’s! So what is the answer for the big adventure bikes who love to test themselves in the dirt but want to ride to their destination. Besides the options of towing or one or two other tricks that tyre. Mr Right Hand is clearly in rapid tyre wear – ease of the wrist to a leisurely double your mileage. Yes, and perhaps not feel as help the pocket.

The debate between knobblies and dual purpose tyres is really quite dependent on the type of terrain you’re going to ride. Clearly anything with soft sand and mud, knobblies will be far the better choice. Many have got away with dual purpose in sandy and or muddy conditions tyres but with a degree of riding skill. REVIEW:

KAWASAKI KFX450 QUAD

REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER At first I thought, what am I doing on this, I’m not a dirt-kinda-guy? Although not my first time on a quad of this calibre I still had to ask my self the question ... Were 4 hours on the water not enough? My answer ... Nope, not if you can so much fun afterwards! For starters I knew that this was going to be a machine to be reckoned with and at first I found the suspension hard, although fully adjustable I kinda got used to the stiff setting, especially around corners. This high performance machine doesn’t require extensive and expensive modifications to make it race-ready, because it already includes all the racewinning performance and technology required for success straight out of the box. The KFX450R’s design incorporates everything a rider needs to win. Every component was chosen to maximize performance on the track or in the bush and to minimize the hastle of getting there. This highly advanced racing 4-wheeler comes with all the performance and technology necessary to put riders at the head of the pack. The KFX450R uses a engine based on Kawasaki’s highly acclaimed KX450F motocross engine. With the addition of an efficient and highly-responsive 32-bit digital fuel injection system, the KFX450R’s engine produces more torque in the low and medium rev ranges for mindblowing acceleration. The use of fuel injection helps ensure that the engine’s performance remains consistent and is virtually unaffected by changes in temperature or altitude. This 4-wheelr’s ability to find traction is superb, and its four-stroke torque helps keep the wheels hooked-up for improved handling and higher corner speeds. Other race-ready features include a lightweight titanium exhaust header pipe and a durable forged piston. Winning depends on a chassis that’s built to handle tough conditions. The KFX450R offers the full benefits of an all-aluminium frame, combining exceptionally light weight with the extreme stiffness needed to win. However, it isn’t just advanced materials that give the KFX450R its winning edge. The front suspension design incorporates extremely long lower A-arms which results in outstanding response from the front-end. At the rear is a cast aluminium swingarm that provides the ideal balance of flexibility and rigidity resulting in unparalleled traction. The high-tech chassis also features a very low center of gravity and excellent roll resistance. Regardless of changing conditions or rough surfaces, this race-oriented chassis makes the KFX450R a potent weapon in the battle of the ATV’s. Competition-oriented equipment, including the only reverse gear in its class, helps keep the KFX fast and reliable. Previously unheard of in racing, the KFX 450R’s lightweight reverse system lets riders quickly pull themselves from any turning oops or dead-end trails. Kawasaki has also made the KFX450R easy to work on, so riders can focus on what’s important ... winning. The headlight assembly is quickly detachable for closed-course races, and the compact design means that the ATV looks just as aggressive with or without headlights. These features leave little doubt that the new KFX450R was designed to get its rider on the racetrack and winning races as quickly as possible. PRICE R65 995.00 Incl. VAT

REVIEW:

HYOSUNG GT650R

REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER Commuter, this is for you. This is for you who don’t like speeding but still wants enough power to get you through traffic. This is a perfect bike, backed by Kawasaki SA, for the “first bike” buyer ... light, easy to handle and comfortable too, who demands flexibility and performance. Great handling and balance is what stands out compared to other bikes in it’s class. Some of the features I picked up while on the GT were: - Well positioned LCD display featuring all that is necessary to keep you well informed. - The rider’s seat is firm in design to provide good support and reduce fatigue. - Race position handlebars and adjustable footrest positions gives you flexibility to tailor the ride position to your preference. Marked as one of the Fastest Hyosung Motorcycles available you will not find another bike that delivers this kind of performance at this price. This compact water cooled 90 degree v twin, DOHC 8 valve engine incorporates the latest technology and produces 79 horsepower. It sets a new benchmark in V-twin performance. It has dual Mikuni downdraft carburetors, low restriction stainless steel exhaust (this one had an Air-Rage can fitted which sounded much nicer and it “upped” the HP too), environmentally friendly secondary air intake system, which meets all world standards, including euro 2. The 90 degree V-Twin has been taken to the extreme to ensure the ultimate rush. Blistering performance is harnessed in a ridgid box frame with all the features advanced technology has to offer. Any enthusiast in the world will be proud to take it to the roads in style. Subtle yet aggressive - this is no ordinary bike. Stunning good looks, broad power range, adjustable riding position and suspension make the GT650R unique. Adjustable footrests compliment the versatile chassis, tailored ergonomics to suit your body and height. Dual lateral oval bar frame is designed to reduce weight and allow the engine to be carried lower to provide cornering agility. Upside down forks compliment the chassis to give nimble handling and safer road holding. Twin front discs and dual twin piston fully floating brake calipers provide incredible stopping power. Fit racing pads and you are ready for the race track! Upside down forks have compression and rebound adjustment, and the rear shock is charged for suspension sophistication not normally available in this price range. LCD instruments with fuel and temp gauges, clock and dual trip meter. A large 17 liter fuel tank ensures a long commuting range. Split left/right fairing design allows cheaper repairs in the event of damage. The comet GT650R also has convenience features such as pillion seat, grab rail and heavy duty tie down rails for all your gear for those long trips. The GT650 incorporate key lock storage compartment under the pillion seat. Items such as wet weather gear, maps, lunch etc can be stored here, as well as locking helmet security. REVIEW:

YAMAHA VX110 WETBIKE

REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER Yeah, I told you I was going to do this and man am I glad I did, this is just the beginning, watch this space. I truly have to stop myself spilling my guts in telling you what I think about this sport ... it ROCKS!! But let’s talk about the PWC (Personal Water Craft), at least I can fit that on one page ... Not only is the VX110 priced a lot less than the competition, you’ll find the low operating cost of its 110-horsepower, four-stroke engine very attractive. And since it’s longer than comparable models, it provides a rider-forward design which allows a more comfortable seat. The large rear platform acts as a great place to put on snorkeling gear or soak up the sun. With the VX110 exceptional quality, performance and reliability come standard. With bold, stylish designs, and one of the best ergonomically designed riding positions, the new VX110 Series of four-stroke personal watercraft represents a family watercraft utilizing the latest in low noise, low emission four-stroke technology - all at an attractive price. But low price alone does not make a champion, performance is king when it comes to personal watercraft, and the VX110 delivers. For the recreational rider who wants a good-looking, all-around performer, the VX could be a perfect fit. Equipped with an all new, 4-cylinder R1 engine that boasts 110 horsepower, this highly-versatile craft is capable of towing a skier or wakeboarder and is the ideal craft for family recreation and multi-passenger adventure touring. Yamaha created a truly affordable range of economical-to-run 4-stroke watercraft and achieved that with all three VX models, including this outstanding machine, the versatile and very popular VX. Like the VX Deluxe and VX Cruiser, it’s a thoroughbred WaveRunner – all the way from sleek hull to compact power unit - yet this remarkable affordability comes without compromising either the performance of the clean, quiet, smooth, EFI 4-stroke VX engine … or the legendary Yamaha reputation for riding comfort, super-sharp handling and turnkey reliability. With its aggressive styling, exceptional fuel economy, stunning performance and all-round ability, the VX is a great way to start your adventures in the wonderful world of watercraft. Every WaveRunner hull delivers an exhilarating, comfortable ride in all water conditions, with a winning combination of rail-like straight-line stability and tight, rock-steady cornering. All models feature digital multi-function metering with read-outs for speed, tachometer, fuel level, running hours and battery voltage, along with automatic alerts for low fuel or oil pressure and overheating. FX models feature a large analogue speedo/tachometer unit. Some families take a vacation every year, some take one every weekend. Great experiences with your family become a lot more frequent with the VX110. PRICE Normal Price: R95 000.00 Incl. VAT Our Price: R88 000.00 Incl. VAT

RUNS & RALLIES

MY FIRST WETBIKE BREAKFAST RUN was a blast. Perry Yamaha invited me along, seeing that we now feature WetBikes in the mag, on a breakfast run from Blue Lagoon to Toti Beach where we had breakfast at Spur. The down trip took us about an hour but when coming back the wind had picked up and it took us almost 2 hours of mastering the swells and waves. It only took me a few minutes to get hooked on this sport ... no traffic, no potholes, no cops, just pure fun in the sun. Hey my Yamaha VX110 JetSki, provided by Perry for a review even had an R1 Engine in, so you can only imagine the thrill. Afterwards we went to Hazelmeer Dam where to water was a lot smoother, jumped on a few other models like the GP1300 and man that was like riding my Busa ... massive pull. I haven’t had so much fun in years, playing in the water and laughing at the same time, it’s addictive, trust me. - Pics by Bike Talk

GOD’s HALF PAGE

Shaped for Glory

During the Great Depression, a good man lost his job, exhausted his savings and forfeited his home. His grief was multiplied by the sudden death of his precious wife. The only thing he had left was his faith-and it was weakening. One day he was combing the neighborhood looking for work. He stopped to watch some men who were doing the stonework on a church building. One of these men was skillfully chiseling a triangular piece of rock. Not seeing a spot where it would fit, he asked, “Where are you going to put that?” The man pointed toward the top of the building and said, “See that little opening up near the spire? That is where it goes. I am shaping it down here so it will fit in up there.” Some of you are going through terrible troublesome times. You may be experiencing some heartbreaking sorrow. Or perhaps you are enduring some painful physical illness. Or it may be something else-maybe even too excruciating to talk to anyone about. The blows of the hammer and chisel hurt. But hold on to your faith. These difficulties will not get you down. They are only temporary. Glory is coming. It is the harsh blows to the outward man that often bring the greatest strength to the inner man. Keep praying. Keep believing. The Master has to do some shaping of us down here so we will fit in up there.

APRILIA RS 125: THE CHAMPION MAKER The RS 125 is the undisputed leader among 125 cc supersports. Aprilia has always led the field in lightweight sports bikes, pioneering new concepts and advanced solutions, and developing technology that others have had to struggle to follow. Like all Aprilia sports motorcycles, the RS 125 has benefited from the sophisticated technology that has been developed over years of success in GP racing, and quickly transferred into production. Over the years, the RS 125 has forged a reputation as the standard setter for sports 125’s. Sales success has come naturally too, with the RS 125 topping the sales tables on all European markets. The RS 125 is the inevitable choice of riders entering Sport Production racing. And rightly so, because when the competition gets tough, there is simply no other bike like the Aprilia RS 125. The 2007 Aprilia RS 125 is designed and built for technical supremacy and has the looks to match. Its graphics are totally new and based entirely on those of the bike that dominated the 2006 250 GP world championship. The Aprilia RS 125 gives young riders the best the market has to offer in terms of components and equipment, with a concentration of technical refinements that are not found on many superbikes. THE 2007 APRILIA SXV: A WINNER 2006 was a great year for Aprilia in off-road racing, with the rider’s and manufacturer’s titles in the S2 class of the Supermotard World Championship as well as excellent results in the Enduro World Championship. From computer timings to dirt tracks, from the drawing board to the supermotard circuit, Aprilia’s off-road teams and their development staff have not only won races in the field, but have invented, developed and tested new solutions to further improve on a machine that was already acknowledged as the perfect ‘rider’s bike’. Aprilia has again shown its dedication to transferring competition technology directly to production motorcycles. The RXV and SXV are to all intents and purposes road-going competition bikes. Totally uncompromising, these machines are designed with just one thing in mind. Winning.

30

THE 2008 RXV: EVOLUTION CONTINUES The design of the new Aprilia RXV 4.5/5.5 model year 2008 owes much to the concept of constant evolution in the name of competition. Experience gained in the Enduro World Championship, which saw Aprilia Racing at the top of the field, plus valuable hints and suggestions from four times world champion Stefan Merriman, the team’s top rider, have enabled Aprilia’s engineers and designer to transfer advances from racing to production. Impressive team work has led to a number of major improvements over the 2007 bike, making the 2008 RXV even more “race ready”, and better equipped to satisfy the demands of professionals and amateurs alike.

THE 25th TOY RUN was a huge success, the PAV roof was packed with bikers and members of the public sharing in the spirit of giving. Metro lead the mass-ride to Toti and although super slow, no major incidents were reported. Oh yes, needy kids from all over will be blessed with these gifts even the sponsored toy bikes will be greatly appreciated by the little-ones. An apology is in order, so, please, forgive me. It was not until this morning on my ride to work that I fully understood I was in error. Yes, I’ve noticed that there are many very busy and important people on the roads. You all are hard to miss with the cell phones (talking and sms), laptops, breakfast bars, coffee & soda drinks, cigarettes, make-up’s, chatter-meetings, marital advice, child correction ‘and all’, but until now, I didn’t realise I was causing so much trouble for you: the busy & multitasking drivers. I figured it out this morning, thanks to the nice lady working on the laptop who needed the lane I was in. First, ma’am, let me say that when I hooted at you from the shoulder, I didn’t mean to startle you. My intent was just to give you a little prompt to let you know I’ll get out of the way so that the lane could be all yours, but I was braking so hard, causing my body to slump forwards, that I couldn’t lift my thumb off the hooter button. My bad behaviour ... I surely didn’t mean to cause you to nearly hit the guy talking on the cell phone. You know, the one who was also smoking and talking as he moved his SUV right into the space you had just left Milliseconds ago. Anyway, the good news is, that’s when I finally realised that all of you multitasking drivers must be sms’ing each other about intended lane changes and running traffic lights and stop signs and such. I’m sorry - I’m still using old-fashioned blinkers. I didn’t realise you needed some time to e-notify that guy that you needed the lane back. I really messed it up for both of you! I can only say that the guard rail was a little distracting, and I was only thinking about myself. I’ll try harder next time. Like I said, I didn’t know that was how you multitasking drivers were communicating. However, I have a solution: I know many of you are so busy and important that you have no choice - you have to eat, work, talk, read and do lots of other really important things as you drive. Those of us who use the road only for travelling would be happy to stay out of your way; we just need to know you’re coming. A little visual clue would help - I was thinking of a bumper sticker. That way, everyone could identify you as Drivers Utilizing Multiple Behaviors. Of course, that’s a little long, so we’d cut it down to an acronym - DUMB. If you’d place stickers on the front, back and maybe the sides of your car, the rest of us would know not to interfere with you on the road. I think it’s such a good idea, I’ll pay for the bumper stickers and even put them on for you. Deal? Again, I’m sorry I got in your way. I’ll try harder to see you coming from now on. I promise! Just another Road User on a Motorcycle
