a word from the editor
I take great pleasure in announcing the very first issue of Bike Talk - KwaZulu Natal. The aim is to serve the Biking Community in KZN with the latest News, Views and Reviews. It is true that KZN has a very small footprint in Motorcycle sales compared to Gauteng and the Cape but the brotherhood we share is something you will not get anywhere else in the country.
This is YOUR magazine, a Sales Tool to the Dealer and a Reference Guide to the Reader. It’s done this size so you can carry it with you and use it everyday. There are some very useful features in here and some more to come given your input and feedback. Feel free to phone or email me with your thoughts and ideas. This is a start and with your support, Bike Talk will grow into a communication tool for everyone. I urge you to take ownership by sending us your Club News, Run Feedback, places for Rallys and Runs, stories for the Cartoon Strip or anything you think will contribute to Bike Talk and serve others. To the advertisers, thank you for your immeasurable support and to the KZN Biking Community, let’s show our support and may motorcycling LIVE STRONG in KZN. Hope you like it ... ENJOY!

keeping it up Gusting Winds - Some of you have noticed the past few weeks how difficult it is to ride, especially close to the coastline. Just imagine this; the one moment you’re riding along minding your own business and enjoying the scenery and the next moment a gust slams into you and pushes you into oncoming traffic or onto the shoulder of the lane. I don’t know about you but that’s a serious wake-up call. The way for corrective steering in such a situation is to counter-steer quickly and I mean counter-steer, in the same way you would with an emergency swerve and back around an obstruction. Counter-steer, what do you mean? Well it’s like this ... to lean your “bonie” right, push on the right grip and to lean left, push on the left grip. The stronger the gust of wind the harder you have to counter-steer. Oh and don’t forget to prepare yourself for when that gust of wind all of a sudden ... hey where did it go? Typical of our weather we are experiencing in coastal-KZN is that the wind gets stronger later in the day when everything starts warming up, around 10am or so. This could be because cool coastal air is pushing and meeting up with the inland hot air. So, it’s a good idea to get out there bright and early in the morning when it’s still cool and fresh, beating the gusts we’ve been fighting with these last couple of weeks. That’s it my brothers and sisters, I’m sure this “bolt” of advise will help you in “Keeping it Up” -- Hein Jonker

REVIEW - bmw k1200r
REVIEW BY LOVELL HEATHCOTE Thank you to Tommy Johns Motorcycles for allowing “Bike Talk” to test this awesome machine.
FIRST IMPRESSION: When at first fixing your eyes on this machine, one gets an immediate impression of an unmistakable combination of menace and class. l guess the class is naturally expected and visibly evident in this make of motorcycle. The menace comes from the sleek, naked styling and the incredible power plant, accompanied by the blending of the black and yellow paintwork. CONTROLS AND GADGETS: The well positioned, highly visible and easy to read controls are accompanied by an aerodynamic mini-fairing which is enhanced by the (new-look) asymmetrical headlights. COMFORT: The K1200R comes standard with fairly wide, straight handlebars which are well positioned and comfortable. This, in combination with a soft and forgiving seat, results in a fairly upright, very comfortable ride. This was the opinion after a 300km trip. Being a naked bike the wind protection was aided by the minifairing, thus resulting in a controlled ride up to + 160km per hour, thereafter the normal naked bike turbulence was experienced. PERFORMANCE: The power, torque and potent acceleration experienced, is enough to gain respect from even the most competent of riders. This machine is by far the best performing naked bike in production to date, pushing out 163bhp (120Kw) of power and 127Nm of torque at your command, combined with an 80% peak torque delivery available from 3 500 rpm all the way through to 11 000 rpm, is no mean feat by BMW. Not to mention (0 - 100) in 2,9sec. The bike feels light, with loads of agility and stability under severe cornering, thanks to BMW’s advanced Paralever (rear) and Dualever (front) suspension setup, keeping the bike on an even keel during hard braking. This EVO braking system with optional ABS and 320mm brake discs results in “State of the Art” stopping power. A huge bonus is the ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) system which allows you to adjust the bikes suspension at the press of a button while on the move, to accommodate varying road surfaces, varying loads and your personal preferred riding style, in the choices of normal, comfort or sport modes. What made the bike even more thrilling was the wailing sound which came from the aftermarket Laser can. What a privilege to experience this on a beautiful Saturday afternoon through the “Midlands Meander.” ACCESSORIES: A comprehensive list of BMW optional accessories are also available, namely: Anti-theft warning system, Heated handgrips, Low-profile seat, ABS brakes, Luggage rack, Clear turn signals, Cockpit fairing, BMW Navigator 11 GPS moving-map system, Center stand, BMW adjustable side cases, Soft top case, Tank bag. OVERALL RATING: This bike separates the MEN from the boys. Do you have the “SOUL?” PRICE: R126400.00 and an optional ESA at an additional R5500.00 Including 14% VAT

REVIEW - K AWASAKI ZX10R
REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER First we’d like to thank Sheldon at Kawasaki Corner in Pinetown for going out of his way in arranging this bike for the review. The idea for the review is to inform the potential buyer of general issues and experiences relating to the bike and we’d like to share our views with you by keeping it simple … FIRST IMPRESSION: The first thing that caught my eye was the colour. It’s something you haven’t seen on too many bikes out there. It is also not a gloss but rather a matt finish making it feel and not just look very sexy. Looking from the front, what Kawasaki has done with the headlights is also very appealing and the same goes for the rear
especially with that wide “cobra” like tail end. The integration of the front indicator lights into the faring is a nice finishing touch as will be the rear indicator lights with the new 2006 model. CONTROLS AND GADGETS: The controls are all in the right places as you would find on any Japanese bike. The display is compact and yet very practical, just watch the Fuel indicator LED when flashing because that’s the only warning you’ll get when approaching an empty tank. PERFORMANCE: Well, well … up to about 140km/h all is calm and getting there happens within a few seconds but accelerating from there is smooth and like opening a hornets nest at the same time. This bike is not for the faint hearted, make sure you have the bike pointed in straight line when letting it loose from 200km/h plus … it becomes a projectile at the blink of an eye. As far as road holding is concerned, it’s only a pleasure. This ZX10R weighs in at only 170kg making it possible for you to “point and shoot” very easily. This is the kind of bike I’ll hurt myself on because it wants you to do things you’d normally not attempt like putting it down in a bend, bringing it back up again in a snap and cruising on the back wheel. The ZX10R is equipped with a state of the art Tokico breaking system which provides you with a smooth, no biting, stopping sensation, nothing more and nothing less. COMFORT: As with any Super Bike, Sports Bike or Performance Bike, call it what you want, the seating position is down-forward. This is not a position you’d want to find yourself in for a long period of time in and around town or in slow traffic, no, this is a bike for the open road and twisties. Wind protection is the same as with any bike in its class … enough depending on how you look at it. The seat height is slightly higher than some, making the centre of gravity nice and high. As for a pillion, well tell her to buy her own, this bike is to be enjoyed by only one, no need for a sail on the tail. RUNNING COST: With a fuel capacity of 17 litres you should get about 7 litres/100km averaging at 160km/h which will take you in the region of 240km into the sunset. A typical tyre change will set you back, rear @ R1000 and front @ R800. The first service is at 1000km and thereafter at 5000km intervals costing you in the region of R600 a shot. OVERALL RATING: It’s a very neat piece of machinery, well thought through for the type of ride it is … light, powerful and very satisfying. With a 2 year unlimited mileage, factory warranty you’ll be riding with a smile on your dial. PRICE: R108995.00 Including 14% VAT

rider training
with BMW SA
We are putting together another NOVICE AND REFRESHER RIDING COURSE either for March or April. So far we have 9 Novice Riders. Cost R1000.00 includes the use of a 250cc Yamaha for the course. The training is given on the K53 Test. Within 30 minutes you’ll be up and riding. No licenses are required at this stage but it would be an advantage especially for the Refresher course riders. Our success rate is 100% so far. We have BMW SA backing and they send their Riding Instructors to us from Pretoria. The course is for people who want to ride and can’t and for those people who used to ride 20 odd years ago and needs to update on riding skills now that they are coming back into it again. Anyone interested please contact Jo 083 285 0815 ASAP for further information.

and the lord said
by Rui Rodrigues
LOOKING AHEAD - Jesus said “Take therefore no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself ... Math 6:34 Simply speaking, Jesus was meaning ...: Learn how to live one day at a time. In the game of life there are only two categories of people, winners and losers, and the wonderful thing is that regardless of how ‘young’ or ‘old’ you may be, we all have the opportunity to choose to win. Realise that you are a unique individual, and that there is not another person in the whole wide world like you. God made you special, just the way he wants you to be. He has a plan and a purpose for your life. If you see yourself as a nobody that is the way you will act, but the exciting thing is that you can always decide to be a WINNER! Stay young at heart or you may fall apart! Yours in Christ Jesus always. For your nearest CMA Chapter please contact Rui on: Cell: 082 800 4108 or visit www.cmakzn.za.org

WHY A MEDICAL AID
by Guy Boardman
Our possessions are extensions of our lifestyle and as such, these possessions become the statements that we make to the world. Sometimes we take more care of our possessions than ourselves. Our possessions tell the world what we are. They reflect our taste, our wealth, our intelligence our ability and a myriad other factors applicable to the complexity of our individual personalities. Sometimes, we are prepared to cut budget on certain life-essential items in order to satisfy our egos in respect of our possessions. And so it happened that a motorcycle enthusiast, a real enthusiastic, stopped his contributions to his Medical Scheme and the fickle finger of fate stuck out its beckoning finger that morning of the Breakfast Run. It was one of those winding sections, with gentle sweeps through a forested area. The sun hypnotically flickered on and off, as the impeccable machine carried its rider through the maze of shadows cast across the road by the pine trees. The air was fresh and the smell of nature was great and it was good to be alive. It was he who first hit the oil patch, where a truck had broken down and had its gearbox repaired late Saturday night, leaving a deposit of gearbox oil on the road. What followed does not require further tale. When he eventually awoke from the pain free sleep, he knew that he was OK. He was lying in a private hospital and he knew that he had the best possible care, just by glancing around at the professional surrounding and having caring voices there to welcome him back. He also knew that all was taken care of by his medical scheme and his two week stay in hospital and three surgery sessions would all be covered. His friend, who was riding with him, had also hit the oil patch, slightly deeper into the curve, and his slide was stopped by the Armco barrier. He did not have medical cover and following emergency treatment by the paramedics he was taken to the nearest government hospital. The paramedics said that he seemed fine when they left him at the emergency ward. He was in pain, but was speaking and actually even cracked a joke.
