a word from the editor HAPPY NEW ... oh little late for that now. Yeah I know, what happened to the January issue you might ask? Well, we decided that most people spent all their money in December and it wouldn’t justify having one in Jan., and we needed the break anyway. I hope all of you had a blessed festive season and have made enough money by now to go out there and buy your brand new 2007 model of whatever your heart desires. This issue promises to be a very exciting one, full of good news, great reviews and read-worthy articles. Parking the Beast Many of us firmly believe that it is unmanly for a motorcycle to lack a few scars. However, many riders seem to wish to keep their fairings unscratched, their mirrors unbent and their footpegs straight. A grasp of the basics of parking your motorcycle will aid you considerably in this aim. No rule is absolute, but most of the following rules apply most of the time. For convenience, it is assumed that small people ride smaller bikes and big people ride bigger bikes: so, whatever your size, your bike will be pretty big in comparison to your body weight. 1. Park with your rear wheel to the curb. Most roads camber; that is, they slope down to the gutter. Also, most motorcycles only have forward gears, so the engine can only help you pull away if you are facing towards the center of the road. 2. Your tyres never sink into even the softest of ground, but metal stands can do so. Park on the sidestand. If you have the slightest worry about the surface (mud, soft tarmac, etc) you can put a ‘foot’ (plastic or metal plate, usually attached to a line for easy retrieval, and stored in a pocket on your bike when not in use), flat rock, wood or the ubiquitous flattened beer can (I mean “soft drink can”, Officer) under the side stand in such a case. It’s much harder to chock up both legs of a centerstand. Also, on the sidestand you are “three point stable” like a tripod, the center stand only gives you “two point stability”. And it’s far easier to “fine tune” the position of a ‘bike on the sidestand than it is to take it off the center stand and start again. 3. Similarly, always use the sidestand and a suitable ‘foot’ under the end of it when on camping trips. Even if the ground is rock hard when you park, rain or dew may soften it enough for the sidestand to dig in. And position the bike so that, if the stand sinks in despite your precautions, your tent with you in it will not be beneath the wreckage! 4. Park at between 90 and 45 degrees to the flow of traffic (depending how wide the road is). Parking parallel to the flow of traffic makes the bike far less visible to other road users, without reducing the actual width all that much. If you can’t park safely at 45 degrees, you probably shouldn’t park there at all. 5. Don’t leave the bike parked with the engine running. If the road is so steep that you need to leave it in gear to stop it rolling, it is probably not the right place to leave it. (Remember; it is perfectly possible for an engine to “creep” past compression - so leaving it in gear does NOT make a good parking brake) If you have to park on a hill; park at 45 degrees to the road, with the rear tyre downhill of the front and against the curb. 6. Think before you park! Look at the ground (for the aforementioned mud or soft tarmac) and if you see a nail, don’t park on it! If you see a “No Parking” sign or marking, consider parking elsewhere. If you see ‘durban confetti’ (broken car window) consider parking elsewhere. If you see half a U-Lock and the innards of a Yamaha ignition switch, do park elsewhere! 7. If you have a choice of parking spaces (e.g.: the length of a bike bay), you should park: where the road is widest; furthest from any corner or junction; not under a tree; under a street lamp; next to a wider vehicle but not behind a vehicle that may have difficulty reversing and where the bike is easily seen (preferably by yourself or members of your household). 8. Try to leave a considerate space for other road users (‘cos they’ll only try to move the bike if you don’t). Never park in the middle of a gap that is “one and a half” cars long: it’s rude and selfish. However, you should park in the middle of a gap that is only one car long, to indicate to car drivers that they shouldn’t try to squeeze in. 9. If you possibly can, whenever you do have to move the bike under your own steam, sit astride it. If you are walking alongside a bike and have to turn or brake it sharply, it can easily fall away from you. As the bulk of the bike itself prevents you placing your feet to brace yourself, this quickly leads to the embarrassing position of you lying on top of the bike while a passing mongrel throws a bucket of water over you. 10. When you have to move a bike under muscle power, don’t let the exertion make you forget your Roadcraft. In large fleets, up to 80% of accidents happen while parking. People relax and forget to concentrate at the end of a trip. Don’t forget to check for other moving vehicles before pushing your bike across the road! Words can not describe the feeling when you get to your bike and it’s lying on it’s side, take care parking it.

RICKY RIDES RED – Ricky Sneddon, Yamaha factory rider will ride SuperMoto for Honda in 2007! Hi Ricky, where are you originally from? Ricky: I’m from Durban. How old are you now? Ricky: 39, I’m an old timer. How long have you been racing for? Ricky: 25 years. What age were you when you first started racing? Ricky: I did my first race when I was 13, actually it was on my 13th birthday. So when did you first get on two wheels? Ricky: Probably when I was about 12. One year and you’re already on the track! How did you do on that first race? Ricky: I came 5th hey. How many people were you up against? Ricky: About 25. Ok, that’s all right. What was it that got you into racing? Ricky: Well a friend of mine, Patrick O’Keefe… we always used to ride and I was good friends with him. I used to go to the track and watch him, and I always wanted to ride myself. Then one day my dad just bought me a bike and that was my 13th birthday present! That’s lekker! What was your first bike? Ricky: It was a KX80. What bike are you riding at the moment? Ricky: Honda CRF 450 R. What mods have you done to the CRF so far? Ricky: Basically I’ve just run it in and put an Akrapovic exhaust pipe on. But the things got so much power you don’t really have to do anything to it. It’s such a smooth bike to ride, it’s unbelievable! Who do you think is the best rider out there today? Ricky: Probably Ricky Carmichael or Stephen Evans. Who is your stiffest competition here in SA? Ricky: Probably Wayne Smith in the motocross, and in the supermotard there’s about 10 guys. So you ride motocross and supermotard. Which do you enjoy more? Ricky: I like them both. The motocross is more physically demanding on your body, but I’m mainly racing motocross this year to get myself more prepared physically for the supermotard. What are your goals for yourself this year riding for Honda? Ricky: I want to try to win the motocross championship and the supermotard championship. That’s my primary goal. And ja, just get top 3 finishes every time I ride; give them as much exposure as I can. Had any broken bones over the years? Ricky: Broken both ankles, operation on both knees, broken my shoulder blade, broken my collar blade twice, my ribs, my wrist. (Laughing) What are your other interests besides motocross? Ricky: Ah, surfing; I ride a Bilt. I’ve started kite boarding as well but I’ve just been too busy. I play golf every now and again, but I suck! So where do you see yourself in five years time? Ricky: Well, hopefully I’ll still be racing, hopefully still be in one piece. As long as I’m competitive I’ll carry on racing, hey, and right now I am competitive. I know I am quite old but I still can kick the lighties! (More laughing) Ok, who are your current sponsors? Ricky: Bigfoot, Fox, Honda, Red Bull, Metzler, Akrapovic, Renthal… ja, I think that’s all of them. You have a full-time job as well… where do you work? What a way to start a new year? That’s exactly what Yamaha SA and Perry Yamaha did, by having the launch of the brand new YZF R1 within a week of each other. Although the Yamaha SA launch were but a select few, Perry had the numbers. I think the stock on his ﬂoor still out numbered the people at the launch that night, let alone the 5 new R1’s he had at there. REVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRIS CIT has entered the Durban bike market with quite a splash! The Godfather is shaking things up, satisﬁed only with making as much turbulence as possible. For our ﬁrst ride of the New Year we have Lenny’s very own cruise missile! Thanks for your support.

FIRST IMPRESSION From headlight to rear mudguard, the Boulevard M109R’s frame is practically encapsulated in covers. The outcome is a pleasantly uninterrupted ﬂow of long, smooth lines, making it one of the most attractive cruisers available to date. The pure physics of the bike are massive: an overall length of just under 2 ½ metres, a mega fuel tank, a 240/40 rear-tyre, and 109 cubic inches of glorious chromed engine between your legs! CONTROLS AND GADGETS A sweeping, LCD bar-graph tachometer is mounted high and center stage between the handlebars, making it the ﬁrst visual when glancing down. Practical? I’m not so sure… but it does give the instrumentation a cool, modish feel. The analogue speedometer shows both mph and kph, which is a neat feature suitable for a cruiser. Two LCD blocks beneath the speedo display current time and fuel usage. PERFORMANCE The all-new liquid-cooled M109R powerplant is Suzuki’s biggest motorcycle engine to date at exactly 1783 cubic centimeters. And while that may not set any size records in today’s world of monster twins, mentioning that your boney is an 1800 will certainly bring instant admiration from your listeners. Thrust production is immense - Suzuki claims an astounding 161nm of torque making this the most powerful cruiser Suzuki has ever produced! With forward controls (feet forward classic cruising position), the hardest part of seeing the other side of 200kph is keeping your feet on the pegs! The technology of the Boulevard is cutting edge; take for example the fuel-injection system derived from Suzuki’s Gixxers, the front dual disk, opposed 4piston, radial-mounted calipers grabbing 310mm discs, also from the GSX-R lineage, or the semi-dry sump lubrication system derived from Suzuki’s motocross bred RM-Z450. SUSPENSION, HANDLING & COMFORT In an effort to reduce vibration the M109R’s engine uses offset crankpins for perfect primary balance, it is also rubber mounted and has a large balancer shaft. It’s unusual to see all three counter-vibration strategies used in conjunction, but it works, making the Boulevard extraordinarily smooth while cruising. Headlight fairing adds to the sleek overall appeal and, because of the low rider seating position, provides wind cover keeping freeway buffeting minimal. The overall 315kgs dry weight is easy to control at low speeds thanks to the lowdown 705mm seat height. OVERALL RATING Suzuki claims the all-new Boulevard M109R to be an “incredible combination of cruiser styling and renowned Suzuki power and handling.” My take on these claims? Let’s start with power… Brutal acceleration you simply have to feel to believe! Handling? Harsh cornering is where the substantial length and weight becomes noticeable, although still surprisingly nimble for this genre. Styling? If you are of the opinion that big and bold is beautiful, this is your kinda cruiser. The Boulevard is a crowd puller, there’s no contesting that. Prepare to be the bane of Harley riders everywhere! REVIEW - TRIUMPH TIGER 1050

REVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRIS We’ve been hoping to get our hands on the new Tiger for some time. When a new model comes out this drastically different from its predecessors we start itching to take a closer look. Thanks go out to Bruce Will from DMC for making this ﬁrst ride possible.

FIRST IMPRESSION Gone are the quirky bug-eye headlamps, the skinny tubular steel frame, the swollen fuel tank and the all-terrain tyres. In their place are wider 17inch rims shod with sportbike rubber, a stiff aluminium chassis and an alluminium swingarm looking suspisiously Daytona-ish, and the styling… wow! The angular lines of the headlight cowl muscle up around the tank and flow beautifully into the upswept tail. I think the designers may have glanced once or twice at the Daytona 675 and the Triple while piecing the new Tiger together, but beyond the brotherly inspiration is a styling all its own. CONTROLS AND GADGETS A wealth of informatioin is a button press away on the Tiger’s digital display with useful figures such as average speed, top speed, average fuel consumption, current fuel consumption, estimated remaining kms in the tank and current time. PERFORMANCE Triumph has had nothing but good reviews on their 1050cc powerplant found in both the Sprint ST and the Triple, so it’s with little wonder that the all-new Tiger gets to make use of the big in-line three cylinder. Peak power output has been reduced in favour of more ample lower-end tourque delivery. This is no boring detune, the Tiger pulls smoothly from as little as 1 500rpm and wheelies for nothing. Specifications are 83kw @ 9 400rpm and 100nm @ 6 250rpm. As far as fuel consumtion is concerned: we averaged a fair 6.5 litres/ 100kms, which works out to about 15.4kms/litre, while traveling over 400kays of fairly hard riding. And keeping a constant 125-130kph cruising speed consumed 5.5 litres/100kms (18.2kms/litre). SUSPENSION, HANDLING & COMFORT A combination of the well-shaped and spacious seat that runs halfway up the tank, low pegs and tall adventure style handlebars allows for a relaxed and comfortable upright riding position. Complimentry to that is the aggresively shaped and well finished-off fairing offering ample wind coverage. Welcome to inspiring and enjoyable journeying supreme! The commanding upright position, wide bars, and brilliantly balanced chassis come into play while riding in town, giving you the visibility and agility to outmeneuver any and all obstacles in your path. Mirrors show little to no vibration and an unhindered view of the rear. The new Tiger’s handling is surprising to say the least. I mean, would you expect a bike that just last year was an on/off road, jack-of-alltrades, to nail high speed bends with the utmost composure, to be flung from side to side with no observed frame flex, or to sit at 200kph+ with ease? No, I didn’t think so. OVERALL RATING This big cat is a completely different animal for 2007. All-new chassis, bodywork, suspension, engine and braking components make the Tiger a must see, must ride, and I think, a must buy. The 2007 Tiger is the embodiment of Triumph’s slogan: “Go your own way”. A man went to a barbershop to have his hair cut and his beard trimmed. As the barber began to work, they began to have a good conversation. They talked about so many things and various subjects. When they eventually touched on the subject of God, the barber said: “I don’t believe that God exists.” “Why do you say that?” asked the customer. “Well, you just have to go out in the street to realize that God doesn’t exist. That’s what happens when people do not come to me.” “Exactly!” afﬁrmed the customer. “That’s the point! God, too, DOES exist! That’s what happens when people do not go to Him and don’t look to Him for help. That’s why there’s so much pain and suffering in the world.”

Legionaires Rally 2006 was a very enjoyable rally for bikers and motorcyclists! Quality food and drinks at biker prices and good DJ Music. Families who attended watched the future bikers on their PB50’s riding on the sports grounds all day in the summer sun. The speedfreaks entertained the crowds with wheelies, burn-outs and “donuts” all afternoon. Thanks to Theuns and his men! Quality was the buzz word at the rally says Eben. He also mentioned a probable venue change for 2007 to the mountains of KZN. Watch the Calendar for details.

St Cathryn’s BMW Off-Road Riding Academy is the latest addition to the BMW Motorrad South Africa family. Roger Scheffer of Mototour Africa identified the need for an off-road riding training facility in Kwa Zulu Natal and approached Jan du Toit from Country Trax, BMW’s chief off-road riding instructor. He subsequently initiated negotiations to establish the academy on St Cathryn’s Golf Estate. The academy is recognised as a fully accredited BMW off-road riding academy, the only one in KZN and situated in Kranskop KZN, 39km from Greytown and 5km from Kranskop on the R74 Road. It’s a perfect spot to learn off-road riding in all its roughest forms within a hospitable country atmosphere, experienced from the moment you enter the premises. There are three courses available. The three-day comprehensive course, covering all aspects of off-road riding, provides a steady learning curve and is specifically designed to ease candidates into off-road riding. A one-day course is designed to help introductory riders find their feet in off-road riding without it being to intimidating in a safe and gentle manner. The Advanced off-road riding course is just that – advanced. The courses are great for anyone lacking a bit of confidence and effective in getting rid of bad habits that may have accumulated over years of self-taught riding. According to Jan du Toit and Roger Scheffer, most riders double their skills and reduce their fears by half (all in one weekend), preparing you for the ultimate all-terrain adventure.

GEARING UP ... IT APPLIES TO GLOVE SELECTIONS AS WELL!! 230 k’s an hour on your new superbike; through the twisters is an absolute thrill! Like most things in life, being poorly prepared or dressed makes little difference until things start going wrong. Too many of us have experienced or seen the results of poor planning and preparation. One of the guys took his new machine out for a spin wearing his ‘kit’ and lost it at speed! His hands and legs, which were then covered by regular off-road gloves and jeans, took a beating! He spent three weeks sorting out the skin injuries before the doctors were able to work on his bones and related areas. The rest of his body did not have a mark on it - thanks to the protective gear he was wearing. The message very simply is - “Wear the appropriate kit all the time!”

Glove types include winter and summer categories and these are further split into short and long (gloves over the sleeves) with further splits between materials used, with and without ‘knuckle dusters’, air-flowed or not and of course the colour range. To choose from these is a process of working out the type of riding you will be doing and purchasing the glove for that situation. More importantly it is critical that you get the best fitting glove that you can. Our hands transmit an enormous amount of information from the bike and are finally responsible for giving directions to the machine. It’s imperative to have the correct fitting gloves and those appropriate for the ride. Gloves extending beyond the fingertips are not good, gloves that squeeze the palm and or fingers are not good (circulation problems lead to numbness which is a disaster for rider feedback), and gloves that are too loose across the palm are also not good purely because the folds will not be comfortable when using the controls especially over a long distance. This leads to a distraction instead of concentrating on riding the machine! Another aspect revolves around the materials the glove is made of. Why on earth buy a glove if it is not going to do the job you would like it to do- imitation leather and fingerless gloves definitely fall into this discussion. Just ask any of the guys who’ve been wearing these in an accident! Finally get a glove that is easy to get on and off – it will last a lot longer!
