THE EDITOR Hey you, I hope you will have a super me reading this issue; thanks for your ongoing support, encouragement and concerns to keep the Mag going. A er some research we’ve decided to only publish Bike Talk every 2nd month to release some pressure off the adver sers on their Adver sing Budget; mes are tough out there, we know and it is hi ng home as well. On a lighter note, I have to say that I’ve never spent so much me wri ng than in this issue, you’ll read up on some feedback from the recent CMA Nappy-Run, the introduc on of the Bike Talk Star Ra ngs, I meet up with the new owner of Harley-Davidson 1000Hills and RTI challenges illegal riders to get tested, get a license and ride legal. You will also see a note to the Car Driver in Keeping it Up, and yes that includes you and I who also drive a car from me to me, to look out for our own while in these ‘O so comfy 4-wheelers’. We also shed some light on the Steering Damper subject whether you should Damp or Not and what effect it could have on the handling of your bike, so spend some me on this ar cle or write us with any ques ons you’d like us to address in a future publica on. In addi on, John at Gear Up gives advice on how to Pack your Bike before a ride and I had a good chat with Vernon Perry to find out what keeps this man running. As for reviews I’m sorry to say, I haven’t had much opportunity to ride enough bikes to make it worth your read but I have spent a weekend on the ‘09 ZX6R and the ‘08 Rocket III Touring, so read up on that to find out what I think of these two horses. I also took the new 1200GS Adventure out, adding about 740km to the clock to be able to talk the ‘GS’ talk and give my opinion on some goodies you can get for your own Adventure. I o en get asked “If you had to buy a bike, now that you have ridden almost 90 different bikes, what would it be?” I can honestly say ... aaah, I’m not going to answer that! There are two bikes, however, that do stand out above the rest but I’ll leave that for a private discussion one day when we meet again. Then there is some exci ng news as I introduce a new product from Topscore to you and I pay a visit to a new Biker Hangout in Malvern. Armor Gear presented me with a pair of their new Cargo Pants to try-out and write about and I add my thoughts on the versa le XKulcha Easy Overs. God Bless!

KEEPING IT UP: For Car Drivers In these so-called modern mes, people are under constant stress from bumper-to-bumper commutes, traffic courtesy is a lost art, too many drives under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, and lose their lives yearly in traffic collisions. According to the World Health Organiza on, traffic fatali es worldwide exceed 1.2 million annually, with an addi onal 50 million disabling injuries. Motorists simply are not taking their driving task seriously. General DistracƟons In a study conducted by Liverpool Victoria Insurance, “Driven to distrac on by our children,” drivers reported loss of concentra on when driving due to: • Children • Hand-held mobile phones • Using audio entertainment • Ea ng and drinking while driving • Using satellite naviga on Cell Phones A University of Utah study, “A Comparison of the Cell Phone Driver and the Drunk Driver, found that “…the impairments associated with using a cell phone while driving can be as profound as those associated with driving while drunk.” Furthermore, the impairment levels were similar whether the cell phones were used in handheld or hands-free mode. Turn Signal Use Perhaps no study symbolizes the lack of though ulness on the road more than one conducted by Response Insurance. They found that 57% of drivers admi ed they don’t use their turn signal when changing lanes. Their reasons? • They don’t have me (47%) • They’re too lazy to bother (23%) • Fear of forge ng to turn it off (17%) • Too busy changing lanes a lot to use it (11%) • Adds excitement to driving (7%) The VaƟcan Weighs In No wonder even the Va can has called for a return to sanity behind the wheel. They’ve put their advice in the form of the following “Ten Commandments for Drivers” and we present them here not to endorse any par cular religion but to demonstrate the universal concern over the needless waste of human life in traffic collisions: 1. You shall not kill. 2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm. 3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events. 4. Be charitable and help your neighbour in need, especially vic ms of accidents. 5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domina on and an occasion of sin. 6. Charitably convince the young and old not to drive when they are not in a fi ng condi on to do so. 7. Support the families of accident vic ms. 8. Bring guilty motorists and their vic ms together, at the appropriate me, so that they can undergo the libera ng experience of forgiveness. 9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party. 10. Feel responsible toward others. Key Messages These are some outlines of key messages for drivers, with an eye toward protec ng one par cular vulnerable party -- motorcyclists: • Look For Motorcyclists -- Use your eyes and mirrors to see what’s around, and check the blind spots when you’re changing lanes or turning at intersec ons. Look, and look again. • Focus on Driving -- Hang up the phone, put down the MP3 player, se le the passengers, and drive. • Use Your Turn Signals -- Signal your inten ons for everyone’s safety. • Give Two-Wheelers Some Room -- Don’t tailgate or pass too closely. • Take Your Time -- Nothing is as important as the safety of your loved ones, yourself, and the others with whom you share the road. • All these principles can be boiled down to this paraphrase of the Golden Rule: Drive near others as you would have others drive near you.

IN THE NEWS CMA Durban hosted the 5th Annual Nappy-Run in aid of non-profit organiza ons who take care of babies in desperate need of this vital and expensive item. As usual the bikers in and around Durban came together for this good cause to donate, at their own expense, so others could benefit from it. That’s what real bikers do; there for a good cause and there for others ... always. On behalf of CMA Durban, I’d like to thank each and every one who took part in this event (biker, supporter or sponsor) for your vision and dedica on. A Nappy-Run first was Jo (Highway Dragons) with his newly acquired Dyno Machine who contributed all takings on that day towards CMA’s Run for the Son project for the prin ng and distribu on of Bikers Bibles. May God bless you and keep you all safe on the roads out there. For more informa on on CMA please visit: www.cmakzn.za.org www.cmasa.org.za

Bike Talk will be introducing a new Product Star Ra ng System to give you the reader an idea what we think about the featured product, be it a bike or gear or even a dealership. Let me set the record straight, this is not to cram or insult but rather to award a product or dealer. If and when the product gets a low ra ng, well then the vendor or dealer will have some homework to correct or improve their service or product ... for the customer’s sake. Look out for these in this and future publica ons of Bike Talk and tell us what you think - HEIN

Harley-Davidson in the USA has laid down a new regula on with regards to Shop Ownership. Gone are the days of “1Owner many Shops” but rather “1-Shop-1-Owner”. As a result the 1000Hills Dealership, among others, went up For Sale. Rob Saunders (right), the co-founder of the 1000Hills Dealership, has now taken ownership a er being in the hands of the Wegerly family. Rob has kept the exis ng staff compliment, with John s ll part of the furniture and the very efficient team in the workshop and sales. I must say, in my brief chat with Rob I could sense a new energy behind the brand and a dedica on that was always part of their lifestyle. Visi ng the shop, in the past and now, creates the feeling of ‘being’ or ‘belonging’ and apart from the good coffee you always feel right at home with these guys and gals. Here’s to improvements, new vision and true American Motorcycles. Times are ght but once you’ve experienced the brand and the people living this dream, you find ways to get out there and enjoy the freedom. So, the next me you find yourself with li le to do on a Saturday morning, go down to the H-D 1000Hills Shop and experience it first-hand. Ask ques ons, take one for a ride and look around the shop for a while ... me well spent. Just an important note: BUELL motorcycles, gear, service and repairs are also available ... just ask. Lifestyle, Freedom, Passion, Companionship - HEIN No, I didn’t get caught, this is Officer Mdetshe of Marian Hill RTI challenging those who are s ll riding illegally to go for License Training, come for their K53 Motorcycle Test and be one of many legal riders out there today not having to worry about the next road-block. I gave a li le demonstra on with this ‘bus’ to prove that it can be done even on a bike of this size. All you have to do is register for a License Course with Bike Talk MRA and we’ll show you how easy it is to pass your test the first me. We teach riders to pass well and not just scrape through. - HEIN

GEARING UP: Packing your Bike Wri en by John Briscoe of Gear Up Motorcycle Accessories The long awaited trip is now upon you and its me to pack your belongings in the most efficient way possible on the bike. You’ve made your choices in terms of panniers (hard or so ) and the type of top box or bag and that you’ll have a medium sized tank bag. The principles that apply to packing the bike are very simple: • Balance the weight on either side of the bike equally; • The lower the weight on the bike the be er; • The less weight on top of the bike the be er; • And finally those items needed during the ride should be easily accessible. Violate any of these basic rules and your ride can become a nightmare as a result of having an uncalled for “incident”. You can imagine what a top heavy vehicle in extremely rough condi ons will be like to control – much like a drunkard trying to walk home – inefficient and some mes painful!! The easiest way to pack the bike is to gather everything and I mean everything you’re taking with you on the trip into one area where you can be in peace for an hour or two. Divide your goods into: • The mechanical aspects and ones clothing. • And then amongst these two groups into the likely hood of usage and ming. For example your rain suit should be near the top of the bag and very easy to get to. • And finally split these into weight groups. The next step is to actually pack the gear into the luggage systems. As far as your clothing is concerned, the preferred method is to ‘roll’ your clothing and pack it ghtly into plas c bags (the good old refuse bag works well). This keeps them dry and rela vely dust proof! All mechanical items must be wrapped or packed in such a way that any movement in the luggage is limited. The effects of the vibra on that happens in a top box must be seen to be appreciated. Polystyrene just reduces to powder. So, tools packed in such a way end up rubbing against each other and poten ally causing damage to the items. Remember heavy items to the bo om of the luggage and as far forward as possible. Keep your valuable items close at hand in your tank bag – remember to take it with you (or the inner bag) if leaving the bike. If you’re using so luggage make sure that the bags are not res ng up against the exhaust leading to melted / burnt items. Also make sure all your luggage is well secured. As ght as one may have secured items such as tents and sleeping bags (usually on the passenger seat), the first couple of kilometers tests whether you have done a good job or not! Perhaps a good sugges on is to stop a er 5 k’s and check out your packing handiwork. Some quick pointers about connec ng systems: • Use cam buckle straps rather than ‘stretchies’ • Cargo nets work well when kept within their elas city requirements • Tank bags must be secure to avoid scratching the paint work (remember to put your bag down upside down to ensure a clean base when moun ng it back on the bike. • Check all pannier and top box connec ons to make sure they are properly ‘clicked in’ to avoid boxes falling off in rough condi ons or when riding over a bump. Now its me to ride – at last! If you’ve never ridden your bike fully loaded before remember momentum will enable you to balance a whole lot easier!!!

EDITORIAL: GS Adventure Goodies The Akrapovic Exhaust System is designed for riders who want to improve the performance of their machines and add aesthe c enhancement with a quality product from a renowned manufacturer, without making a major modifica on to the motorcycle. Power & Torque: the system increases power output between 6 and 8 HP throughout the en re rpm range, especially at the top end. The exhaust system also delivers increased torque. Like the power curve, torque is increased throughout the range, which is well suited to the character and design of the motorcycle. AKRAPOVIC COMPLETE EXHAUST

This li le Screen Add-on is worth more than what you pay for it. At first I rode the GS Adv without this and at 6’ 2” and riding at about 140km/h I experienced some head-bobbing which really looks like you’re listening to music while riding. It also puts a lot of strain on your neck especially on a long trip. Enter this li le a ermarket Air-Foil that completely eliminates the problem without obscuring your view. It truly does what it’s made for and that is to deflect the air up and over your head for more comfort and less helmet noise. It is adjustable and just s cks onto the GS Main Screen; I would consider this an absolute must for any GS Buyer or exis ng GS Owner. Available at Ryder Motorrad, Hillcrest. You just can not beat the Controls or Features of the GS Adv, which I’m sure you’ll find on most of the BMW Bikes: SPOTS: this makes you look like a truck approaching from behind and lights up the road ahead in a big way. INFO: this gives you Range, Fuel Consump on, Temperature and many more. ESA: Electronic Suspension Adjustment for added comfort and different riding condi ons. ASC/ABS: Automa c Stability Control which keeps the tyres where they belong ... on the road. This is a life saving feature especially when riding in the wet and on slippery roads.

As some of you might know, Razer Gear has been taken over by a team of people with great ideas and willing to listen to their poten al customer base to grow and improve the product. They even went as far as giving it a brand new name; “ARMOR GEAR”. Somehow they found out I hated Razer Pants and offered to change my mind with this new Camo Rider Pants ... well I must say they impressed me! I offered my advise as to what needed to change and they truly stepped up to the plate. I can now get my hand in and out of the pockets, they removed all metal studs and reverted to Velcro and increased the size or area around the “you know what” for more comfort when riding. Although they s ll have no impact re-inforcement on the knee and bu area but only on the hips, they do offer the Super Durable Kevlar linings in the front and back of the garment. The lining also helps prevent wind chill, a factor I had to deal with on my ride to Maritzburg a while ago. As for the length which they addressed, riding without showing what colour socks you are wearing, is now a thing of the past. They have also taken me and effort to focus and improve on quality on this product which is exci ng to see. Here’s to a good product and the dedicated team behind it. Try them on for size any me. Contact them or visit their website for a dealer near you. Armor Gear: 033 3442093 - www.armorgear.co.za Man is this a lifesaver! In cold, wet or even everyday use to the office and back, this is a must have. It keeps the rain off your legs and the cold out, especially in the weather we’ve been having lately. It even has side pockets just like the cargo pants and offers good protec on against abrasion. Should you pick up some weight, as some of us do, you can go from a size 38 to 40 by merely adjus ng the Velcro waist band. Ni y huh? XKULCHA Easy-overs is the easy on/off protec ve garment to wear over everyday wear. Quick to put on and easy to take off, folds up into a compact parcel for easy storage. Perfect for inner city transport and long distance touring. I wear this to my training site from me to me and have underneath the XHULCHA Quad Shorts for more comfort while training. I do get a concerned look from students when I strip these off in-front of them without a warning and then the ques ons fly as to where they can obtain a pair as well. So the next me you want to shoot out on your bike with just a pair of shorts, wrap one of these around your legs ... just incase, you’ll be glad you did. The protec on truly makes up for the li le me spent pu ng them on.

To Damp or Not to Damp Why fit a steering damper to your bike and how it could help A steering damper, steering stabiliser or sprint damper is a damping device designed to inhibit an undesirable, uncontrolled movement or oscilla on of a vehicle steering mechanism (a phenomenon known in the motorcycling community as ‘wobble’, or in extreme cases, a ‘tank-slapper’). Modern motorbikes are unlikely to exhibit this behaviour in daily use thanks in part to be er dampers and due to their very s ff front ends and other general improvements in design and tyre technology.

Device Usage Sport bikes have a short wheel base and an aggressive steering geometry to provide the ability to make very quick changes in direc on. This has the generally undesirable side-effect of making the bike less stable, more prone to feedback from uneven road surfaces, and more difficult to control. In addi on, their light weight and powerful engine can cause frequent wheelies. If the front wheel significantly deviates from the direc on of travel when it touches down, it may cause an unwanted wobble. Steering dampers are factory installed on some high-end sport motorcycles and fi ed to most contemporary racing bikes to counter these behaviours. Steering dampers are also mounted to off-road motorcycles such as motocross bikes. A damper helps keep the bike tracking straight over difficult terrain such as ruts, rocks, and sand, and also smoothes out jolts through the handlebars at the end of jumps. They also reduce arm fa gue on longer rides by reducing the amount of effort needed to control the handlebars. Transverse linear steering damper on motorcycles, one end of the damper mechanism is mounted to the steering yoke, the other to the frame. Steering dampers are available in two forms. Linear dampers resemble a telescoping shock absorber and operate in a similar manner. They can be aligned either longitudinally and to one side of the steering, or transversely across the bike. Rotary dampers resemble small boxes and operate via a rota ng pivot. They are mounted coaxially with the steering axis and are typically located on top of the steering head. For motorcycles with sidecars, especially for solo motorcycles which have had a sidecar installed later and where the front wheel geometry (trail.) has not been adjusted for the par cular use with a sidecar, the installa on of a steering damper is highly recommended. This prevents low speed wobble which may occur in the lower speed range of about 20 to 30 km/h. In older motorcycles adjustable fric on dampers had been rou nely installed. Hydraulically operated steering dampers may be retrofi ed. The installa on and opera on of a steering damper must be inspected by an expert or examiner and must be entered in the vehicle papers.

REVIEWS: Kawasaki & Triumph REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER I had this bike for a weekend just to find out what the Japs have been up to from the previous model and I must say ... A LOT! To name a few; an extensive overhaul by Kawasaki on weight shaving, improving mass centraliza on, refining engine and chassis behavior, adding a revolu onary front fork design; the new leaner, more precise Ninja ZX-6R delivers the elusive calm and confident handling that any motorcycle buyer would need. A new leaner physique with a major reduc on in weight and improved power delivery offer more precise control, lighter handling and be er accelera on. The rear sub-frame is narrower, making it easier to reach the ground and the front of the seat is narrower and seat height is approximately 5mm lower, for a slimmer riding posi on and a shorter reach to the ground. Smooth gear shi ing, riding posi on and comfort were some of the main points I truly enjoyed as a rider measuring 6’2” out my boots. Slim, waist on fuel tank makes it easy for the rider to grip the tank with his knees or to hang off in turns and front to back, the new seat is shorter, allowing the rider to shi his body further back on the rear seat step, helping to reduce rider fa gue. Like any 600 ge ng the most out of it means you have to ride it right throughout the rev range, meaning; don’t change gears un l you get past the 10,000rpm be er s ll, why not re-line before you change ... Wild, very enjoyable. NICE!! There is simply not enough space here to finish my story but the bo om line is; If you s ll have an ‘07-08 ZX, you might want to trade it in. If you have another brand’s 600cc sportbike, keep an eye on your mirrors because Kawasaki has done some amazing stuff to this bike that’ll crack your mirrors in passing. REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER Most mes reviewing a bike is a pleasure and some mes I get to ride something I really enjoy. That was my experience with the Triumph Rocket III Touring. There’s no hiding that great big lump of an engine. At 2,294 cc, the in-line three-cylinder powerplant dominates the Rocket III Touring in every respect. Polished chrome exhaust headers contrast with flat black cylinder fins on the bike’s right side, drawing a en on the massive block. The Rocket III Touring produces 106 hp @ 5,400 rpm and 208 Nm of torque @ 2,025 rpm. All that torque available at such low rpm means that you can shi into higher gears (5 in total) and stay there without sacrificing responsiveness. Even in 5th gear, the engine pulls like a locomo ve from 60 km/h up. Smooth cruising is available at almost any speed, right up to extra-legal. Having all that power on tap is incredibly alluring, especially the low-end grunt. Whacking that thro le and feeling 2.3 liters come to life gets the blood rushing, and the exhaust’s bass notes hit the gut like a body shot. Any muscle car fan will understand the appeal. The Rocket III Touring isn’t the fastest bike on the road, nor the most powerful, but it doesn’t ma er -- the appeal matches the statement. That big engine delivers as adver sed. The “Touring” part of the equa on seems to be in place as well. My wife praised the pillion comfort and posi on. I don’t like a lot of gadgets and extras on a touring bike -- a radio, GPS naviga on, airbag, etc. are wasted on me. Heated grips? I’d rather wear good gloves. If you choose a Rocket III Touring, you’ll find yourself looking at the horizon as an invita on -- and you’ll want to get there quickly. Just remember to check that igni on key posi on every me you park, or you’ll be si ng at the horizon a lot longer than you wanted to. PRICE:

JUST FOR FUN: BMW 1200GS Adventure Call it what you want; “The Landcruiser of Bikes”, “The Bike with all the Plumbing” the fact remains that if you want a real experience of Dual Sport Touring then there is only ONE op on and this is it. I had, once again, the opportunity to ride the GS for a weekend from To via Lions River up to Ladysmith and back, a round-trip of over 700k’s. I mainly tested the comfort, fuel consump on, trac on control, a screen add-on and the twin Acropovic System for added power which I’ve covered in another ar cle. I’ve shared with many that if ever, in the past 3-4 years of tes ng bikes, there was a bike or two where I expressed major reluctance of giving it back on the Monday it would be the Triumph Rocket III and this BMW R1200GS Adventure. This is the only bike that handles both road and off-road superbly without any major effort from the rider. It turns on a dime, it sits in a corner, it is rock solid at higher speeds and it has a presence on the road unlike any other. Yes there is a painful price difference between this and the standard 1200GS but if money is not an object then you absolutely have to get the Adventure. Filled up with fuel will give you a range of about 580km, at 140km/h. This is the type of bike you’d find yourself looking for alterna ve routes to take, riding into the unknown for miles and miles. It is the type of bike where you wish water is fuel, which you don’t have to pay for and just ride, ride, ride un l your bu falls off and when that happens you stand on your foot-pegs and ride on. Seriously, visit Ryder BMW Motorrad in Hillcrest to test ride one, you’ll never look back. - HEIN

NEW PLACES: Fanatix Pub & Grill I had some me on my hands one Monday morning and was told by Alton about this new Biker Hang-out in Malvern and I thought let’s have a look as there aren’t too many of these in Durban anyway. Taking the Belville turn-off from the M7 it didn’t take me long to find the place ... opposite Bluff Meat Market. The first thing a no ced when I got there ... ample parking, yeah, there’s enough room for a donut or two and then walking up the stairs which introduced me to the spacious bar area and a connec on from the Thumpers M.C. Vincent, the owner, took me through and gave me a quick tour of the facili es and what they have to offer. He also shared with me that their prices are truly biker friendly and are very accommoda ng should a club want to host a mee ng in their exclusive lounge or entertainment area. This area is equipped with a Pool table, Dart board, a lekka sound system and a Big Screen to view your favourite sports events. Taking you outside for some fresh air are a couple of tables and chairs with a braai facility if it gets too much inside. They offer full catering for any mee ngs held at the Pub and braai-packs or boerie rolls at real biker prices depending on your requirements. This is truly a venue with a good variety of space, food, drink, entertainment and it is central. This is a place with many possibili es, open to any biker and his buddies to hang-out and stay out of trouble. Apparently Bernade e makes the best double thick milkshake; which certainly is something I’ll take her up on.

GOD’S HALF PAGE It makes all the Difference On a crowded street of one of our large ci es, a young man was snatched from the path of a speeding truck, his life saved by a venerable-looking man. S ll breathless from fright, the youth thanked the one who saved his life and then was lost in the crowd. Two weeks later in a crowded courtroom, an anxious young man stood in the prisoner’s box to be sentenced for murder. “Young man, have you anything to say before the sentence of death is passed upon you?” “Why! Yes! Yes, Judge,” the youth responded, “you know me.” A silence moved like a shock wave over the courtroom. “I’m sorry. I cannot place you.” “Yes. Surely you remember. Two weeks ago. At Main and Seventh Streets, you saved my life. Surely, Judge, you can do something to save me now.” A silence pervaded the courtroom. “Young man, now I do remember you. But that day I was your Saviour. Today I am your judge.” Today the Lord Jesus Christ wants to be your Saviour. If you refuse Him and His grace, one day He will be your Judge. Don’t wait un l Judgement Day, it’ll be too late and don’t say; “I’m too big a sinner, I can not be saved”. Jesus Christ will climb down into the pit with you and carry you out. It takes the Saviour of man to do that; only a Saviour would stoop so low as to save a sinful soul like yours and mine.

DEALER TALK: Vernon Perry Vernon and I met one morning in his office to find out what made Perry Yamaha turn and the man behind it all. I took great joy, as a proud supporter of the Yamaha brand and as past customer of Perry Yamaha, listening to Vernon sharing his thoughts. Allow me to introduce a great business man with a passion for his product and customers. Hein: Vernon:

How many years has Perry Yamaha been in business? 23 years, it started in January 1986 in Umgeni Road by first ren ng premises and 4 years later we bought our own place in Umgeni Road.

Hein:

Where did it all start for you as Vernon and how did it evolve into a business? I’ve always been mad about cars and bikes my whole life but my dad, when I was s ll a li le boy, never took me to these types of events. I went to my first motorcycle race when I was about 17; I had a girlfriend whose father was a motor enthusiast and when I finished school I became an appren ce mechanic for the first 5 years and when I qualified I went overseas. When I came back I started selling motorcycles in 1977 for 8 years before I started on my own.

Vernon:

Hein: Vernon:

From Umgeni Road to Umhlanga Ridge … Why? First of all, business is definitely moving out into the Umhlanga and Ballito areas and our old premises became somewhat crammed with the workshop in the back, they heavy traffic past the old shop, the noise and then parking for our customers posed a major concern. Apart from the fact that the Umhlanga Ridge shop came out of the blue, the me was right for us to move.

Hein: Vernon:

Since the move, has there been a change in business? In the first month we moved to the new premises we were the No.1 Dealer in South Africa. With motorcycle sales hi ng a low in 2008 our sales remained the same compared to sales in 2007, so the move was just at the right me for us. In addi on our Accessories Dept sales increased by 100% compared to sales at the old shop. In 2009, as you know, had a huge slump in motorcycle sales but accessories again remained at the same level.

Hein: Vernon:

How many brands do you stock? We stock Yamaha Motorcycles, Jet Skis, Golf Carts, Quads, Generators etc. and then any brand in our 2nd hand Sales Dept. On the accessories side we have a huge selec on for every type of person buying any of our Yamaha products.

Hein: Vernon:

Which markets do you cater for? Any motorcycle market, Road and Off-Road, although we stock Scooters and Cruisers we don’t push them in a big way. Quads were 40% of our sales 2 years ago but now 2-wheel Off-Road bikes are the more popular even more popular than Road Bikes with Enduro at the pinnacle. ... con nued on page 30 >>

Hein: Vernon:

What is your Mission Statement or what keeps you going? My hobby has always been my business; what more can a guy want? Also being involved with the public is very important to me being able to share my passion with people and yes, turning that into business. So I think if you want to be successful in business, make it your hobby or passion first.

Hein: Vernon:

What are your future plans for the business? Short term is to get through this market crisis first and just keep our overheads low and just keep going however long it takes. Long term, this business is in such a good spot, that I just want to go from strength to strength in this area and market segment. I also don’t want to expand with addi onal shops as that will seriously hamper the personalized service people are ge ng now. It’s easy to open a shop here and there but in the end people want to deal with the Henrys, Marks and Vernons.

Hein: Vernon:

Considering the financial mes we are in, where do you see it all going? There is a huge difference from 2008 to 2009 especially from Jan 2009 we’ve experienced a huge drop in sales across the board and I think it’ll stay like this for the rest of the year with small improvements during the last half of the year. We are seeing it already but it is s ll a long way to go from what it was.

Hein: Vernon:

What can customers expect from dealing with Perry Yamaha? First and foremost they can expect total honesty, from me to my salesmen right through to my workshop. We have an open invita on to all customers to come and view their bikes ge ng serviced and we are surely not in it to make a quick buck.

Hein: Vernon:

Can you give me a high and a low in your years of business? When I started in 1986 they said that I wouldn’t last 2 years and that kind of depression you don’t want in your life but 1995 has been the lowest point in the overall motorcycle business and then in 2006 has been the absolute best year in my 27 years of business.

Hein: Vernon:

What do you offer with regards to Track Days and rider skills advancement? To set the records straight people have to know that Track Schools and its Instructors are not there to in midate you at all but rather help you enjoy your bike the way you should … safely. Anyone buying a bike for the first me and not a ending a Track School is not the most intellectual move you can make. I think anyone buying a bike for the first me should certainly start with some level of Rider Training.

Hein: Vernon:

What would your advice be to riders today? Most importantly is to NOT race or race your friends in traffic today. The roads today and what they used to be years ago are completely different and certainly more dangerous. You can have a lot of fun on the road without racing anybody and if you think you’re faster than the next guy, come and prove it on track. Even with off-road, if you can’t see where you are going back off the taps and wait for it to clear. From all my years of riding the key that kept me alive was to “Have fun without being stupid while riding”.

On a personal note, Vernon has struck me as a person who knows what he wants, cares for the people who work for him and loves the product or brand he represents. He is also a person who implements discipline into the running of his business and in my years as a customer (650 Dragstar, Baby Raptor, Fazer 600, FJR1300, R1, MT-01) of Vernon Perry, I can honestly add that I couldn’t have asked for be er service, support and business ethics.
