a word from the editor

Well that was a tough one, getting the first issue out was not easy. Thank you to all the contributors, it wouldn’t have been possible without the ads, articles and news bits. Here’s to the second issue a better balance with more news, more interesting stuff to read up on. Feel free to send me your comments and who knows, I might even publish it. We’ve managed to give you three bikes on review this time, so read up on it and go to these dealers and get on it yourself to truly experience what we have.

Some more good news is the launch of the Bike Talk Website which will give everyone that little extra exposure and posing to be an excellent communication tool for biking in KZN. I ask of you to please support the advertisers, because in the end their advertising make the printing of this Mag possible. We’ve had very positive feedback from you the reader saying that this is a good thing for biking in KZN, so let’s keep it alive. We also require all, dealers and readers, to please send those pics, events and articles for possible publishing in the mag and on the website. I apologise for the late issue, but chasing material and creating urgency are two issues we’ll have to cope with every once in a while.

keeping it up ROAD HAZARDS – As you know, in KZN, we have a selection of potholes, edge traps, oil spills at toll-gates, loose dirt and who knows what else on our roads. Imagine you’re riding along peacefully taking in some scenery and the next moment you find yourself in a situation of slip-slide-slam, yeah I’m sure it’s happened to the best of us. So whose fault was it? Well in a sense you could blame Road Works but to be quite honest, you could’ve avoided the fall. When travelling in a straight line its fine to enjoy the ride, take a quick squiz at the scenery, but up comes a turn or bend and what do you do … focus, focus, try and look through the turn before taking it. Yes look for surface colour or texture change which could be a possible hazard like loose gravel or an oil spill. When it’s wet you need to put more tyre surface on the road by keeping the bike upright for as long as you can. In town watch-out for railroad crossings and surface steel plates at road construction sites and not to talk about the lanes at our toll-gates, slipping on that gunk is enough to make your blood boil, check before you put your foot down. Another thing to watch-out for is debris like tin cans, cardboard or plastic, oh and steer clear off those white paint lines, it can bring a bike down quicker than you can say foot peg. Last thing, when approaching a curb try and cross it at right-angle, giving you a better chance to get over it rather than slipping off it. -- Hein Jonker

R6 LAUNCH AT PERRY YAMAHA - Yip it’s here, in small quantities but they were well accepted by those at the launch that night. New, sleak, exciting, light, oh man and eish were the comments of the day. DURBAN MOTORCYCLES - The launch of the 2006 Kawasaki ZX10R took place on Monday, 20 Feb, which turned out to have a few engineers in the crowd discussing how they would modify this mean-machine. Like Craig put it, “This is a track bike with road capabilities”, I can only invite you to find out for yourself. Retailing for an amaizingly low R99995.00, Kawa lover or not, you’d want to get your hands on one of these. - Pics by Bike Talk

KAWASAKI CORNER - Had their launch of the new Kawa ZX10R, Wed night on 22 Feb. Come rain or shine they said and yip, it rained but the crowd was there to see this awesome machine revealed. REVIEW - YAMAHA R6

REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER To Andrew at RBS Yamaha, thank you so much for allowing me to test ride this beauty, although just for an afternoon, it was worth the while by far. FIRST IMPRESSION: Super Sport just gave birth to a whole new baby with the introduction of the all new R6. With various colour options to choose from this black model took my breath away. You’d think it’s a custom job but it’s not, this is stock standard my friend and it stuns, made me feeI like “Ghost Rider” at one stage. CONTROLS AND GADGETS: Instrumentation includes programmable shift light, digital speedometer, analogue tachometer, dual trip meters with km’s-on-reserve function, odometer,

water temperature gauge and lights for neutral, high beam, low fuel and turn signals. Everything else is where you’d expect them to e as on any Jap bike. PERFORMANCE: Gone are the days of waiting for 600’s to break the 100hp mark and at 14500rpm the new R6 pushes out a 133hp, about the equivalent of any stock 750 out there. This 599cc DOHC 16-valve, with titanium valves, engine transfers power to the rear wheel through a six-speed transmission aided by a slipper clutch. The 41mm inverted fork is adjustable for preload, both high and low speed compression damping and rebound damping, while the rear shock also features preload, high and low speed compression adjustment and rebound adjustment. At a claimed dry weight of 162kgs, Yamaha brings the R6 to a halt with two 310mm floating discs up front and a single 220mm disc brake out back. Although the feel provided by the new-for-2006, drive-bywire throttle is a bit odd at first, I was able to adapt rather quickly. The acceleration produced by the new R6 is impressive, a wide spread of serious thrust. COMFORT: When you first sit on the new R6, you notice a fairly radical “rider triangle”. The ergonomics are clearly those of a sport bike/racer. Wind protection is clearly designed to be available primarily while the rider assumes a race tuck. The new R6 handles superbly with Yamaha’s great efforts to centralize mass coupled with the new suspension and all-new frame allowing the R6 to turn in more quickly, steer more precisely, and remain more stable than its predecessor, a brilliant combination. RUNNING COST: A basic service will cost you in the region of R500.00 with services done at 6000km intervals. A 2 year warranty comes standard. OVERALL RATING: The new R6 is a large leap forward, however, with more power, more precise handling, and more stability. The addition of a slipper clutch and the drive-by-wire throttle are a step forward technologically. PRICE: R82956.00 Including 14% VAT

REVIEW - triumph sprint st

REVIEW BY LOVELL HEATHCOTE Thanks to Craig and Bruce from Durban Motorcycle Centre for allowing us the privilege of test riding this unique motorcycle. FIRST IMPRESSION: This in-line triple, or 3 cylinder, may not be the fastest bike around, but it oozes unique character. It’s seldom that one gets on a bike and within two kilometres you fell as if you’ve owned it for a year. It’s the most friendly, easy-riding and comfortable machine I’ve been on in a long time. It’s so forgiving, performs like a thousand, but feels like a 600. It’s like a good glass of wine, you’d want to take your time with it and enjoy it thoroughly.

CONTROLS AND GADGETS: One would thing, what will the British have up their sleeves regarding controls etc., well no surprises here. The display is stylish with everything in the same spot as what you’d find on any Japanese bike. The indicators are integrated into the rear-view mirrors which stops it from looking like an alien with those bobby-looking indicators you’d find on most out there. PERFORMANCE: Low down torque and power is impressive, coming from an addictive guttered triple sound. From around 2000rpm, power becomes strongly progressive, delivering serious kick from 5000rpm all the way through to 10250rpm. The Sprint’s body looks stylish from front to rear, a shorter wheelbase and steeper rake for sportier handling. It’s flickable, yet delivers a solid sensation which inspires confidence in corners as well as in a highspeed highway burst. Suspension components are quality Showa units with ample settings and adjustments. The front brake-lever has a 5cm play before it bites, one however gets used to this very quickly. The Triple, under-seat exhaust is stunning. I’d like to hear this machine with an after-market system. COMFORT: The lean angle is a comfortable forward position but not far down at all. The seat is nice and soft for both the rider and pillion with the natural heating from the exhaust system, making you feel all fuzzy inside ... don’t stop now. As for wind protection, well there’s enough for the rider but for the pillion at a slightly higher position, you might get some sail. You also don’t want too much otherwise you could go and buy yourself a car. RUNNING COST: A major service will set you back about R1060.00 at 6000km intervals. It also comes with a standard 2 year warranty. OVERALL RATING: Anyone would be proud to own this unique British machine, it’s a beautiful bike with user friendly features, styling and comfort. PRICE: R94000.00 Including 14% VAT

REVIEW - CPI GTR125

REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER Thank you to Dacar Motor Corporation for lending us this scooter for a weekend of joy-riding.

FIRST IMPRESSION: When I walked into their showroom one weekday to introduce the magazine to them I saw this sexy looking little bike on the floor looking almost like an R1 from the front and a “Busa” from the rear. It doesn’t have the typical little scooter wheels but rather the normal size street bike wheels with cast-alloy rims. The headlight is a set of optical lamps and not filament with integrated indicators and the tale light being a bright LED cluster, really impressive stuff. The red colour has really done it for me although it comes in blue, black and yellow too. The Taiwanese has finished this bike off nicely, from the colour coded mirrors to the sports bike-like foot pegs for both rider and pillion, I mean it even has a “hugger” on the rear tyre. I had no choice but to look at this scooter with awe for what’s been achieved inside the price it’s selling for. CONTROLS AND GADGETS: The controls are pretty standard, all in their rightful places the same goes for the LCD display at the top of the handlebar. A neat little safety feature is that you’d have to hold the front brake before the bike would start, hey you’ll be leaping forward if you don’t, it’s automatic. The side stand comes up automatically when you bring the bike up, another less hassle feature. Both brakes are on the handlebars, so don’t go looking for the rear brake down there, you’ll loose a toe if you try. PERFORMANCE: Yeah you’re thinking, “what’s he gonna say about the performance”, let me set you straight from the start, the maximum speed I could get out of this little beauty was 105km/h, so decide for yourself if you want to use it on the highway or the byway. Personally, the highway is a no-no but driving around traffic and town I found it to be very agile and easy to ride. Going uphill was a breeze keeping its speed for as long as I had the throttle open, very impressive for a 125cc even with my son as pillion totalling 120kg’s for the both of us. Rounding bends was smooth both in and out without having to drop throttle at any time. As for acceleration, well it’s a 125cc scooter what do you expect, slow on the take but once up to speed it satisfies. COMFORT: Again I say this is not for the long haul, however a very comfortable upright riding position as you’ll find in most scooters out there and at 105km/h, who needs wind protection anyway. RUNNING COST: With a fuel capacity of 9 litres, this scooter can get you to the 200km mark with ease. A typical service will cost you about R500 at the 10000km service intervals. OVERALL RATING: This is for the girls or boys who likes cool and sexy without having to fork-out a bundle for it. The GTR is truly a nice little run-around with the coolest finishing for a scooter, well worth the price. The new GTR blurs the line between motorcycle and motor scooter. PRICE: R14990.00 Including 14% VAT

and the lord said

by Rui Rodrigues

INHERIT A BLESSING 1 Peter 3:9 - “Do not repay evil for evil, but with blessing because to this were you called so that you may inherit a blessing” I am a more to hold a grudge than to release a blessing when someone has hurt me. My reaction to conflict reveals how desperately I need your forgiveness to flow through me. Ask God to heal us from this anger that rises up so quickly and forgive us, for His Word says: “I will forgive your trespasses and sins”. I want to reflect your image to others, even those who are working against me. Let me ponder your holiness before facing a potentially difficult encounter or situation. I want to arm myself with your word, strength and compassion, so I can honour your name with my actions. I will inherit a blessing by spreading and speaking of the legacy of your love. Yours in Christ Jesus always! For your nearest CMA Chapter please contact Rui on: Cell: 082 800 4108 or visit www.cmakzn.za.org

SA FROM YOUR BIKE

by Len Graskie

On March 10th 2000 I left Warner Beach riding a VN800 on the start of doing the Redline S.A. bike tour, organized by Ken Slatter doing a 8000 km trip around S.A., it was the most amazing 2 weeks of my life. You have to stop at 24 different points in S.A. & photograph your bike in front of them as proof & also retain petrol slips. What a ride! What a wonderful way of bonding with your kid. The quality time spent that lasts a lifetime. I did the whole trip with an open face helmet, normal prescription glasses & no gloves. I camped at Augrabies falls and met an old darling who rubbed a mixture of Germaline & Zambuck on the tops of my sunburnt hands and arms. By the way I came to meet our LORD on this trip, another wonderful story. Towns covered were Durban - Greytown - Newcastle - Goldreef city - Pretoria - Warmbaths - Pietersburg Zaneen - Graskop - Pilgrims rest area - Barberton - Piet Retief - Richards bay - Warner beach - 4 days rest - Bloem - Kimberly - Poffader - Port Nolloth - Lamberts bay - Saldana - Cape Town - Knysna - P.E. - East London - Port Shepstone - home. Last year Bev & myself decided to do the 29th Parallel properly, as if in one ride. We left Warner Beach to Richards Bay-looked at the Indian ocean over an ice cold coke-left and rode Empangeni - Melmoth - Babanango - Dundee - Ladysmith & slept below Little Switzerland - on to Kimberly. Here we were spoilt rotten by Willie & Yvonne president of the C.M.A. in Kimberly. Next morning on the road early to Poffader - excellent accommodation, fridge full of beer & Karoo lamb. Leave what you owe on top of the fridge. Next morning we had to cover 160kms to Springbok. Ever done this section of the N14 ?. you squeeze until the needle is plus side of 200 kms an hour. Later we arrived at Port Nolloth and viewed the Atlantic ocean. 29th Parallel complete. They had a Christian outreach in town that night. Blessed to have arrived in town that particular day. We celebrated big time. A days rest and onto Tulbach - Robertson. Start of Route 62. What a Ride. This time Bev left me standing through the passes. Forgot to tell you that this trip I was riding a V-max and Bev on a Thundercat. A bike that is truly underestimated. Scratch like you can’t believe. Slept at de Rust. We went on to Graaff-Reinet - Middelburg - Molteno - McClear - Tsolo. Bev’s bike chain had stretched and was on the last adjustment - no help around here, scary when it’s your daughter. When we reached Port Shepstone we prayed together & thanked our LORD for adjusting the chain beyond a mechanic’s limit & for just being blessed enough to do this once or twice in a lifetime trip together. A warning to fellow brothers - do it soon as Beverley has now fallen in love & dad has no daughter to ride with. Nice chatting with you - Take care and enjoy life now & make the best of situations, before you know it you are sixty. It is a better ride with our LORD in your life and His protection is a bonus.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

by Karissa Naidoo

ROADSIDE ARREST ON OUTSTANDING FINES The LAW SOCIETY OF SA has currently appointed a group of attorneys to deal with this flagrant transgression of the law; for further info on which attorney are taking on cases like these, please call Hester Bezuidenhout 012 338 5872 who will assist . Know your rights The traffic/metro police are doing random road block checks. They will also feed your registration into a computer that will show up if you have any outstanding fines. Know your rights. If you get stopped for outstanding traffic fines - really important for all drivers: Make sure that everybody gets this message. The Jhb Metro Police, Cape Town Metro Police and other traffic cops have recently developed the nasty habit of locking people up for unpaid fines. These road blocks are typically only happening in and around more affluent areas where their “hit rate” will be higher on traceable entities, with more “fixed” abodes when, as we all know, primary daily offenders in their mini busses literally get away with murder because the cops are too scared to root them out of the townships, or the justice system has no means of putting them over a barrel like the majority of “soft” citizens. They can only arrest you if: 1. They have the original warrant for your arrest there with them. A copy isn’t good enough, saying it’s at the station isn’t good enough either. They have to show it to you there and then (if they have it, check plan “b”). 2. They have to prove that you received the summons in person. It either had to be delivered to you in person or you had to collect a registered letter from the post office (if they cannot prove you personally received the relevant summons, the warrant of arrest is not legal either). 3. If you do get stopped and they want to arrest you, demand to see the warrant and proof you received the summons (i.e. your own signature on the document when delivered to you). 4. If they don’t have it, the arrest is illegal. Refuse to go. If they still arrest you inform them there and then you will press charges against them for illegal arrest (record everything that is said to you, as well as the chronological procedure of events in detail). These details may well stand you in good stead for a strong case. 5. Technically, if your arrest is illegal, the taking possession of your car by the police and its driving thereof while you are in custody, may also constitute theft. 6. When you are released, go to the SAPS immediately and lay a charge against the arresting law body and relevant official. *** MAKE SURE YOU CARRY YOUR DRIVER’S LICENCE WITH YOU!! ***
