a word from the editor With this, our 3rd issue, thank you to everyone who contributed to the March issue and to those dealers for inviting me to their launches. It is great experience to be there and also listen to the stories and comments from fellow bikers. For those who sent articles and pics, thanks to you, it is wonderful to see the increase in readership and support which makes me realise that we are onto something good here. In the previous issue we’ve added a new feature called, ”Bikes on the Dish”, suggested by a reader, which will help you find all the biking programmes on DSTV, hope you’ll find it useful. Bike Talk in association with Photo-on-the-Spot is a brand new service offering photography and photo and poster printing at all major bike events and stunts in KZN ... see page 13 for more info on that. A sincere welcome to Kawasaki South Africa in placing their first ad with us, hoping to see more of the distributors supporting our local magazine and showcasing their great machines which we enjoy riding everyday. Check out the reviews on the new Kawasaki ZX10R and Honda Fireblade. In the next issue we’ll have a bike from Aprilia and who knows, maybe we’ll get our hands on the new Kawasaki ZZR1400. We’ve received a few pics for the “Pic of the Month” section and I ask again to please make sure these are of a good quality and not taken with a Cell Phone? This issue is a little late due to last minute cancellations, changes and bikes not ready for reviews on time. Well, here is to motorcycling in KZN, a province with endless scenery, great places to visit and the perfect way to do it ... on a bike!!! For those not part of this brotherhood yet, get yourself to one of these dealers and ask them how you could taste FREEDOM the way we do!!!

keeping it up
by Hein Jonker
Carrying a Passenger Company is always nice. Some pillions weigh 50kg, others weigh 100kg. Putting extra weight on the motorcycle will affect the handling. Adjust your suspension and tyre pressures to compensate for the amount of company you’ve brought along. (Check your owner’s manual.) Also realize that your braking capabilities have changed; take that into account. The more weight you have on the motorcycle, the longer it takes to stop. Passengers should be instructed to always mount from the same side, and to warn you before they climb on. This goes a long way to preventing a muddled heap lying on the ground. Passengers need the same protection that you do - proper clothes and helmet. Five meter scarves flapping in the wind may look dashing, but not on a motorcycle. You don’t want shoe laces or loose pants legs catching on rear wheel or chain parts. Never carry anyone sidesaddle. Passengers should always straddle the bike with their feet securely planted on the footrests. Tell passengers not to put a foot down when you come to a stop. Show them where the hot things are - like header pipes and mufflers. Caution passengers against coming in contact with the hot parts to prevent any injuries. Also, rubber soles can melt and leave a mess. Instruct passengers to hold onto you at your waist or hips. Ask them to lean forward slightly when you leave from a stop or accelerate along the highway. Also, when you brake, passengers should be firmly braced against your waist and should lean back slightly. You don’t want their weight to shift forward. Advise passengers not to lean unless you do. You do not want the person behind hanging off the bike at 30 degrees; that will do funny things to the steering. However, when you lean going around a corner, passengers should definitely lean as well. So have them look over your shoulder in the direction of the turn when you go through a corner; that will put the weight where you want it.

IN THE NEWS
Another successful event by Tommy Johns Motorcycles with the launch of the new 1200GS Adventurer. Although the majority of guests were road bikers, a very pleasing response was had for this beast of a machine. Well-done to Kathy and her team for an excellent event and a brilliant addition to your product offering. For that long African Adventure then this will be the bike to do it on, yee-haa!!

REVIEW - K AWASAKI ZX10R REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER To Sheldon at Kawasaki Corner, again, thank you very much for allowing us to test ride this “Green Mamba” on such short notice. We’ll be comparing issues addressed in the review of the 2005 model and highlighting the changes in the all new 2006 model. Kawasaki eliminated what many, myself included, felt was a beautifully designed front end and replaced it with a fairing that incorporates two small teardrop shaped headlights, and a much larger ram air intake. Compare the front ends of the bikes side by each and you’ll see just how radically changed the new 10R’s bodywork is. Either you love this or hate this. It comes in three colours, this Green, Orange, Titanium and Black. Kawasaki has totally redesigned the 10R. Gone is the relaxed seating position of the 2005 model which has been replaced by a more cramped, trackfocused ride. This should have little effect on an average guy, but as a taller rider this really bummed me out. The pegs have been raised and the seat lowered. Kawasaki are no longer content with manufacturing streetable trackbikes, or trackable streebikes. According to Kawasaki the all new 2006 ZX-10R is a sharply focused track tool. This is what it’s come to. They reworked a ridiculously fast bike and made it even faster. It’s easier to ride. It isn’t intimidating in the least. The power on tap is incredible and it’s handling is much better than the previous bike. The dual undertail exhaust was partially for styling purposes, and that they felt it looked more aggressive than a single undertail unit. Additionally it was stated that the undertail solved the problem of locating the new dual Euro-III emissions compliant catalytic converters, which now reside in the header. In addition to the power and volume gains, the dual exhaust helps integrate the new rounded aerodynamic tail section. They redesigned the tail section, supported by an all new cast subframe and is designed to make the 10R undraftable by eliminating the air pocket behind the bike. I felt the new bike was considerably better handling-wise than the older model. I also felt that the older model’s weight distribution and chassis made for unstable transitions in corners which was correctly addressed in the the major changes with this model. Kawasaki have completely redesigned the transmission to address the shifting issues people complained about with the older bike. They also claim to have reworked the slipper clutch in this unit, something I could confirm, worked wonderfully. I’ll leave the final decision up to you, you have to decide if you like the looks of this bike. I can’t decide that for you. I can only tell you how it rides. The bike is a 10 for performance. The rest is up to you. The big question is, should you keep your old 10R or should you trade up? If you’re a taller rider like myself, trading might not make sense if you plan on using the bike as a commuter or a street bike. Dropping the pegs an inch will work wonders for a tall guy’s knees. In the performance category, without a doubt, the ‘06 beats the older models. If you’re racing, you’ll need to upgrade, or prepare to be passed. PRICE: R99995.00 Including 14% VAT

REVIEW - honda cbr1000rr REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER 2006 Honda CBR1000RR - Features & Benefits New for 2006: • New cylinder-head • New cylinder-head combustion chamber shape • New intake cam • New intake valves • Intake valve springs • Redline increased • New transmission gears • New clutch needle bearings • Redesigned ram-air intake screen grid • New exhaust system • New chassis geometry • New, larger full-floating 320mm front disc brakes • Revised front suspension settings • Revised rear suspension includes new linkage • All-new bodywork • Improved seat foam • Exciting new colours. Though none of the numerous changes made to it aren’t especially radical, they do add up to make the new Blade even more of a complete package. Only time will tell whether the Honda will be able to ultimately match or beat its superbike opposition. But I’d stick my neck out and say that the vast majority of riders will be able to get more from the Blade than the others - simply because it’s so useable and friendly. The new bike doesn’t look too much different, retaining a very similar overall shape to the current bike. Changes to the engine and chassis are just as subtle. Weight paring on stuff like the cams, radiator and engine covers, along with a lighter exhaust, and ECU help account for the claimed 3kg saving overall on dry weight. And changes to the intake and exhaust ports, combustion chamber shape, and two, rather than a single inlet valve spring, contribute to the claimed boost in midrange power and a 550rpm-higher red-line. With a very slightly steeper head angle, and marginally shorter trail and swingarm lengths reducing wheelbase by 10mm, the Honda engineers told us to expect a sharper turning motorcycle. And while they were at it, they also pointed out a stiffer crank and redesigned gearbox for greater reliability, some bigger brake discs for extra stopping power, and lower gearing to make acceleration a bit brisker. None of those changes suggest a very different bike to the current model. But believe me, the new Blade is noticeably improved. For starter’s it’s a bit lighter up top, and you can notice that just from hauling it up from its stand. And it’s definitely got sharper steering too. I hadn’t even gone around the second bend, before I could tell the response was sharp. And this trait was something I was going to notice a lot more throughout the day. The boost to the midrange and torque is evident, and that combined with the higher redline, means the power is now more broadly spread, easier and more forgiving to use. This means you can hang onto the same gear for longer and the new bike definitely doesn’t need the same number of changes to keep the pace as high. Now the most debatable point is whether, as Honda claims, the new bike can keep up with a GSX-R1000. But, and it’s a very relevant but, feel isn’t necessarily good enough to assess the actual acceleration and speed an engine gives. A smooth and linear delivery like the Blade’s can sometimes disguise its true potency, and give the impression that it’s slower than it really is. Where it will compete closely with all other superbikes however is round corners, the Blade’s chassis has always been up there with the competition, and the latest bike’s is the best version yet. The slightly reduced weight, and sharper steering really paid dividends round the M7 bends. The 2006 bike’s steering is lighter and sharper and it can hold a line perfectly no matter what the speed or sharpness of the corner. It’s amazing just how much small changes in geometry can make such a difference, but that’s just what they’ve done. It’s a similar story with the brakes and the increased disc size has added extra power while retaining the same levels of feel and progression. I certainly never wanted any more stopping power whichever of the bends I was charging into. It was an excellent way to find out just how good the Honda was under pressure, and the Blade passed the test superbly. The final verdict on the bike’s handling is quite simple. It’s a lot better than me and it never got anything less than my full approval. And that’s the story of the bike overall. It’s better by being gruntier and sharper, making it quicker and easier to go faster on. The changes to the engine and chassis might be subtle but they do add up to give a noticeable improvement. The latest Blade is even more well-mannered than its predecessor and all the more rideable because of it. And that’s a very good thing when you’ve got so much power and speed on tap. The only real concern for some will be that it doesn’t feel as fast or thrilling as it is. Not everyone wants refinement and civility from a superbike.

oh yeah !!! I had the privilege of riding this bike, an Aprilia RSV1000 Factory Mille for a whole weekend. We left Toti early one Saturday morning along with the rest of CMA Durban to visit and support fellow CMA members in Kokstad. For those not familiar with this bike, well travelling at anything less than 160km/h is NOT what it’s designed for. I soon realised that when I had to pull over for a fellow biker and then catch-up again with the rest of the group. I won’t mention the speed I had to do for obvious reasons. Once we hit the road inland towards Kokstad, all those bends, I couldn’t help but respect the technology Aprilia have put into this bike. This bike was built for exactly this ... twists and turns. I wish the M7 between Queensburgh and Pinetown was this good? The trip back was even better. Just to mention some of the technology put into the Mille: OZ rims, Ohlin front and rear suspension and stearing damper, carbon fibre inserts into the faring, not to mention the very responsive and sharp Brembo braking system. As with any V-Twin the ride is a bit shaky at slow speeds and as for a pillion, sorry sister get your own this is a track-bike. A special thanks to Clint at Breakeven Motorcycles for allowing me to taste a bit of Italy for the first time -- Hein Jonker

the lord’s sword
by Rui Rodrigues
KEEPING OUR EYES ON JESUS 1 John 5:21 - “Keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your heart” So many times we get ourselves so engrossed in the things around us in our daily walk through life, thinking we are on the right track and there isn’t anything wrong with that but, they seem to take place of our focus on the things that have eternal purposes that come from God above. Be very careful that we don’t fall into the path of doing our work for God as a ritual like going to Church, helping each other, being a good samarathan. We need to see by faith something of the beauty of Jesus and enter into an experience of His power and finding the ultimate truth of Gods goodness and Love for us. Don’t look at your success and think you have arrived because you will find that you will no longer seek for God and His righteousness, this is the plan of the evil one and robbing you of a close walk with God and stop you from the call :press on toward the goal of your high calling of God in Christ Jesus” Allow God to have complete control of your life and then you will have a greater appreciation and fuller understanding of life, growing a richer and more meaningful relationship with God. Amen Yours always in Christ Jesus For your nearest CMA Chapter please contact Rui on: Cell: 082 800 4108 or visit www.cmakzn.za.org

Three South Africans and three Australians are travelling by train to a cricket match at the World Cup in England. At the station, the three Aussies each buy a ticket and watch as the three South Africans buy just one ticket between them. “How are the three of you going to travel on only one ticket?” asks one of the Aussies. “Watch and learn,” replied one of the South Africans. They all board the train. The Aussies take their respective seats but all three South Africans cram into a toilet and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train departs from the Station, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the toilet door and says, “Ticket please.” The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on. The Aussies see this and agree it was quite a clever idea. So after the game they decide to copy the South Africans on the return trip and save some money - (them being clever with money, and all that!). When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the South Africans don’t buy a ticket at all. “How are you going to travel without a ticket?” asked one very perplexed Aussie. “Watch and learn,” answered a South African. When they board the train the three Aussies cram into a toilet and soon after the three South Africans cram into another one nearby. The train departs and shortly afterwards, one of the South Africans emerges and walks over to the toilet where the Aussies are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, “Ticket please” ...

QUICK TIPS: General Guidelines For Riding A Motorcycle Safely Be visible: • Remember that motorists often have trouble seeing motorcycles and reacting in time. • Make sure your headlight works and is on day and night. • Use reflective strips or decals on your clothing and on your motorcycle. • Be aware of the blind spots cars and trucks have. • Flash your brake light when you are slowing down and before stopping. • If a motorist doesn’t see you, don’t be afraid to use your horn. Dress for safety: • Wear a quality helmet and eye protection. • Wear bright clothing and a light-colored helmet. • Wear leather or other thick, protective clothing. • Choose long sleeves and pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves. • Remember – the only thing between you and the road is your protective gear. Apply effective mental strategies: • Constantly search the road for changing conditions. • Give yourself space and time to respond to other motorists’ actions. • Give other motorists time and space to respond to you. • Use lane positioning to be seen; ride in the part of a lane where you are most visible. • Watch for turning vehicles. • Signal your next move in advance. • Avoid weaving between lanes. • Pretend you’re invisible, and ride extra defensively. • Don't ride when you are tired or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. • Know and follow the rules of the road. • Stick to the speed limit. Know your bike and how to use it: • Get formal training and take refresher courses. • Practice. Develop your riding techniques before going into heavy traffic. Know how to handle your bike in conditions such as wet or sandy roads, high winds, and uneven surfaces. Remember: Give yourself space. People driving cars often just don’t see motorcycles. Even when drivers do see you, chances are they’ve never been on a motorcycle and can’t properly judge your speed.
