THE EDITOR Dear friends, it is such a great feeling to be able to talk to you again and give you yet another fresh copy of your very own Mini Mag. In this issue you will learn more about Lane Posi oning when riding, What’s On in KZN, we congratulate the winner of the 1st Liqui Moly Hamper worth R1000 and yes we have another R1000 Hamper up for grabs, don’t miss out, it’s an awesome prize. Furthermore H.O.G. Durban opens their clubhouse next to the Harley-Davidson dealership in Gille s and we explore a few dealers in Sco burgh and Park Rynie. Adding to this we include Club News and sending a dear friend off to the States plus we met up with a gem in Margate during the Africa Bike Week; the all girls team of the Journey of Hope. John of Gear Up gives you some insight as to why Riding Boots and NOT slops, be sure to read up on that. Later in the mag we get technical on Tyre Safety and give you a few guidelines on how to look a er these round rubber things wrapped around your rims. While on safety we make you aware on personal safety when talking about Life’s Blind Spots and how to avoid them. As for reviews I give you the all new BMW S1000RR (someone build a proper track please), I take the Bashan XTC 250 Scrambler for a spin in town and lastly have a me of my life on the Yamaha XT660Z Tenere in an cipa on of the 1200 Super Tenere arriving in May. Saying that; I’ve included a li le teaser on the 1200 Tenere and present you with a Tank Cam Bracket for your bike by TR-TEC Adventure Accessories. CMA in KZN gives you a glance at who’s who in Leadership, how you can become part of a great ministry and who you can call on in your area for prayer, support and encouragement. Their moto “Here when you need us” should tell you that they are here to serve you. Well people, short and sweet my story is complete! Be sure to support fellow motorcyclists on their runs, rallies and day events. Greet fellow motorcyclists on the road, don’t be a snob and thank motorists when they give way for you to pass, it’s the “biker thing” to do. Lastly, never assume anything when you ride, always get confirma on: Look, Think and Ride will keep you alive out there, don’t drink and ride, keep your hearts and minds pure and live to see another day. Un l next me, be safe and look up!

KEEPING IT UP: Lane Position Placing your motorcycle in the correct part of the lane is a key factor in rider safety. You need to posi on your self for maximum visibility and space. As the riding environment changes, your lane posi on will also need to change.
Each lane offers you three choices of posi on — the le lane posi on, the centre lane posi on and the right lane posi on. Keep watching the road and traffic condi ons to decide which posi on is best for you.
LeŌ Lane PosiƟon
Centre Lane PosiƟon
Right Lane PosiƟon
Here are some things to consider when choosing your lane posiƟon: Space Try to maintain maximum space between your motorcycle and other vehicles. Stay well away from any larger vehicles that might cause turbulence, and keep a safe distance from medians. Maintain a dominant lane posi on — a posi on that will make it diffi cult for other vehicles to move into your lane beside you. O en the le lane posi on gives you the best distance from parked cars and debris on the side of the road and is the dominant lane posi on. However, on a mul -lane road, some riders will choose the le lane posi on while riding in the right lane. Visibility Make sure you are clearly visible to the road users around you. Choose a posi on that lets you see well ahead. TracƟon Choose a lane and lane posi on with a road surface that gives good trac on, choose a path that is clear of debris and grease. Lanes o en have a grease strip down the centre, especially on city roads or at intersec ons, stay away from plas c or painted lines, manhole covers and other slippery surfaces. Choosing a Safe Lane PosiƟon: Hills Before the crest of a hill, move to the centre or le lane posi on. You never know what might be coming over the hill and moving into your space. Curves You don’t know what might be coming around a curve, so choose a posi on that gives you the best view through the curve ahead. Trucks Avoid turbulence. When you see a big vehicle approaching, move to the le posi on and wait for about three seconds a er the truck has passed before returning to your usual lane posi on. Weather In heavy gusts, riding in the centre of the lane may give you the most manoeuvring space to recover from gusts. It is your lane space use it, dominate it and whenever you’re out there riding, always remember to S.E.E. (Search Evaluate Execute) and think for yourself because others won’t.

IN THE NEWS I decided to go for a ride one morning to explore any Bike Shops the South Coast might have. I headed to Sco burgh as someone told me of a shop there and in Park Rynie. My first stop was at ‘The Bike Shop’, based in Sco burgh on 153 Marine Terrace. They just opened their doors to the public, catering for the local market by selling Chinese Brand Motorcycles offering Finance, Service and Repairs. Tel: 039 976 1201 Leaving Sco burgh I went looking for the shop in Park Rynie and found ‘Bikes Unlimited’ just off the old South Coast Road in Park Rynie on Second Avenue. I met Vince and Elma, the new owners, and it seemed Vince was very keen to make a success of the business and serve the local community through sales, service and repairs. He mainly focuses on off-road ATV’s and 2Wheelers but I am certain that he can do the same for Road Bikes too. Tel: 039 976 0223

REVIEW: BMW S1000RR REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER Ever since this bike was launched in Europe I needed to ride it. I needed to find out how it would stand up against its Jap rivals. Unfortunately we don’t have a proper circuit in KZN to really let this boy loose but I’ve spent enough me on it to say this: The BMW S1000RR has nothing to hide and offers more than some of its fellow 1000’s on the market. From the word ‘GO’ I felt right at home and couldn’t believe the bo omless power-source it had, and not to men on the brakes. Watch-out my boy, if you are a ‘green-horn’ learn the brakes on your first ride and then start turning on the taps, it is very responsive. Let’s dig a li le deeper to find out what the Germans were up to and how their first a empt to the Super Bike Scene can affect us, I’ll be brief. First, BMW’s system is simple to explain yet complicated in execu on. The ABS and the trac on control (DTC in BMWlingo, for Dynamic Trac on Control) are linked together. The right handlebar switch block has a mode bu on that allows the rider to select one of four modes: rain, sport, race, and slick. In rain mode, output is limited to 150 horsepower, as the lean angle sensor curbs accelera on if the bike is leaned over beyond 38 degrees. Sport mode allows the full 193 claimed horsepower, and will not allow accelera on beyond 45 degrees of lean. Next is race mode, which allows 48 degrees of lean before it weighs in and is the s cky street-legal-tyre track-day se ng. And, finally, the slick ste ng is for slicks, and will accept thro le at up to 53 degrees of lean. I began in rain mode at a sedate pace; I increased my lean angle in a slow, second gear corner, and open the thro le aggressively. It is an odd sensa on, as the bike seems sluggish to respond, but as I exit the corner and straighten the bike up I started going faster and faster. The lean angle detector knows that I’m now on the fa er part of the tyre and allows for more accelera on. BMW claims that the cylinder bore of 80 mm is the largest in the class, and yet the engine is rich in torque from low revs on the way to its 14,200-rpm redline. The bulk of the torque is available at 9,750 rpm, and variable length intake manifolds aid boost. The gearbox is magnificent. And much of the praise can be heaped on the shi assistant. When you’re shi ing up it is not necessary to use the clutch or to roll out of the thro le. As your foot nudges the lever the igni on is momentarily interrupted to facilitate a crunch-free shi . BMW’s design goal with the S1000RR was to minimize the height of the machine while visually stretching its length. They wanted the eye to run from the p of the headlight out the tail to the protruding taillight. The headlights are intended to emulate the look of endurance racers, with the le light stretched to mimic the shape of a number plate. BMW also made no a empt to make the side fairing panels remotely similar. The le panel has a large duct for air expelled from the front-mounted radiator, while the right side has shark-gill vents to dispel heat. Troy Corser, former World Superbike champion and current BWM rider, said this on how the BMW compares to the Japanese superbikes that he’s raced. A er thinking for a moment he says that it has elements of all of them, and then adds that in his opinion it’s as good as any bike right now. The S1000RR has jumped into the toughest segment in motorcycling and shown itself, in many ways, to be harshly similar to the compe on. That alone makes it a good bike. But figure in the sophis cated electronics and the price and it just might be the best bike for you and me. All this said about the S1000RR; it exceeded my wildest expecta ons ... nuf said, ride it!

GEARING UP: Slops or Motorcycle Boots WriƩen by John Briscoe of Gear Up Motorcycle Accessories So why not wear slops to ride your bike? They are lekker cool, easy to slip on, cheap, easily replaceable, colour coded and many different shapes and styles! And above all in this KZN heat they are literally so COOL! Who said anything about protec on – all we wanted was to keep our feet from ge ng dirty underneath (those oil slicks are not good) and to make sure the sand / pavement doesn’t burn the soles of our feet! Ja Boet! We know those okes who ride the bikers’ trikini – slops, pants and helmet (or cap!). Ja we have seen them on occasions! So we all know that riding like this is plain stupidity and just asking for trouble but what should you look for in a motorcycle boot? Firstly decide on what type of riding you’re going to be doing – it does influence the style of boot. Secondly, irrespec ve of the type of riding you do, the following factors are essen al in choosing a boot. • Material of the boot (leather, plas c, high tech materials usually for the soles) • Quality of the product (S tching, protectors, fasteners) • ‘Breatherbility’ of the boot • Back up service (spare parts, sole replacement service, etc) • Materials used for cleaning • The fit of the boot on the foot with different socks (work / social / Enduro) Taking each of the main riding categories one should be aware of the following pointers: Superbike - Strong toe sliders of light weight material, strong ankle protec on in the form of some device to keep the foot from twis ng, strong heel protec on and fasteners that will not break under the forces exerted on the boot. The boots should have double if not triple s tching and definitely no laces unless these are hidden away under a flap of some sort. Most leathers tuck into the top of the boot so it should at least reach the calf muscle. The sport boot is a level down on the full on racing boot and has some of the features of the superb bike boot such as toe sliders. You probably won’t find the ankle and heel protec on devices but merely addi onal padding or a ‘circle’ protector around the anklebone. The weekend super biker and commuter predominantly wear this boot. Cruiser boots are also an interes ng boot where emphasise is on comfort and skin protec on. Some interes ng designs are also common with more of a ‘fashion’ look to the boot. Again be wary of lace ups – these tend to get caught on foot pegs and lead to the dreaded ‘car park’ fall! Going to the other extreme, the Moto Cross and Enduro boot is a tall boot reaching just below the knee to be able to accommodate and hold knee protectors. The cri cal issues here are the steel shank to be found in the sole to be able to support the arch whilst standing on the foot pegs and extensive ankle support and protec on. Some manufacturers go to the extent of designing special leverage systems to enable the foot to move up and down but keep ankle rota on to a minimum – inner boo es are also used for this purpose. The big trick with this boot is for it to feel ‘right’ and not just a lump of protec on on the end of your foot. The feet and hands are the ac ve contact points on the bike – make sure you’re comfortable whilst being protected. The adventure boot or dual purpose-riding boot has most of the proper es of the Enduro boot with the excep on of the height and extensive ankle support. It is not as strong in respect of protec on – much of the riding is in non-technical off road surfaces. The final category of boot is for the casual rider. Here we see various formats of the boots men oned above coming to the fore with most of them reaching just above the ankle. Commonly referred to as ‘short’ boots or ‘50/50’s’ some of these will have steel shanks under the sole and others not – just be aware of the type of riding you will be doing – for off road riding go for the suppor ng shanks. Your feet are definitely one of the cri cal contact points in any accident so make sure you are well protected in this area and not open to any ‘trikini’ cri cism!

WHAT’S NEW: Yamaha Super Tenere Adventure travelling takes skill, courage and endurance – as well as faith in your machine. Faith that it’ll love rocky river crossings and dirt roads as much as you do. Faith that it’s going to be comfortable on a long motorway haul. Faith that it’s got what it takes to carve up twisty mountain roads. The all-new Yamaha Super Ténéré is built from the ground up to be the most exci ng next-genera on adventure tourer, combining Yamaha’s Dakar-bred toughness and reliability with light, easy handling and advanced rider assist technology. Yamaha began with a clean sheet and a clear vision to design the Super Ténéré – the intelligent adventure travel bike. They started with a big, powerful engine – using an inline 2-cylinder layout to keep the bike compact and narrow – and a 270-degree crank for superb feel at the thro le. They kept the mass low and central for light, agile handling from walking pace on a rocky trail to a ack velocity in the twis es. They built it tough, with spoked rims and inbuilt engine protec on for off-road adventures. Yamaha made it comfortable and prac cal for long-haul touring. They also loaded it with the latest in rider assist technology for excep onal safety and confidence. Some key features are: Sha drive inline 2-cylinder engine - 270-degree crank, Intelligent Unified Brake System + ABS, first edi on with musthave adventure pack, mass kept low and central for agile handling, YCC-T with 3-stage trac on control, tough spoked, tubeless aluminium rims. The Super Tenere is expected to hit our shores late April/early May, so don’t waste any me ... ORDER YOURS NOW!
WHAT’S NEW: Cam-Bracket I’ve been playing around with an idea of moun ng my DV Cam on my bike’s tank for instruc onal purposes on my Road Wise Rider Course, yeah, and recrea onal and in pu ng a DVD together for Road Riding Safety Tips. I went to the only guy I knew who could make such a bracket; Howard Sco of TR-TEC. Howard, as you’ll see on page 27, manufactures a vast selec on of motorcycle adventure accessories. This bracket can be custom made to fit almost any tank; it is completely adjustable at a ver cal and horizontal angle and has a universal moun ng for most DV Cameras on the market. You can easily remove your DV Cam and shoot freehand; it doesn’t get in the way, even on a sports bike with a more “lean forward’ riding style. Manufactured from aluminium, it comes fully equipped and ready to mount on your bike and shoot. This bracket will set you back in the region of R700-R800 and is well worth the spend, I’ve got one and it works perfectly. Now to finish my long-overdue DVD. So, give Howard a call and get your Cam-Bracket made up. Enjoy!

REVIEW: Bashan XTC 250 Scrambler REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER From me to me I get the opportunity to get off the big bikes and ride something a li le more down to earth. I took this 250 out on the Durban City streets and up to Umhlanga on the M4 and what an experience. Immediately general traffic treated me as if I didn’t exist, I seemed smaller to them which gave them the excuse to cut-in in front of me and push me all over the place. A small bike in city traffic for me? I don’t think so ... the bigger the be er! As for the bike itself, I truly enjoyed myself in the less congested areas of town and found the bike to be stable, very easy to handle and at the same me pleasingly surprised at the brakes of this scrambler. The bike is well built and I couldn’t find any ‘drop-cheep’ components on the bike, apart from the fuel-cap that I struggled with, I really can not fault this ride. In addi on I found the mirrors set up wide enough for me to see behind me, unlike other smaller bikes where you’d have to be an armless rider to see what traffic is doing behind you. Now this is the type of bike you can easily fill-up with fuel at the beginning of the week and commute the whole week with, depending on the distance of course. The fact that it is only a 250 makes this bike predictable and easy to ride, power is delivered at a very relaxed curve which allows for easy take-offs and accelera on. I also couldn’t find a problem with the gear shi ing, smooth as can be expected from a R13500 bike. Yip, it’s not everyday you manage to pull a brand new bike off the showroom floor for this price and from a respectable dealer too; why not. Sounds like Win-Win to me!

REVIEW: Yamaha XT660Z Tenere REVIEW BY HEIN JONKER Time to chill, me to take in some of our country’s best scenery right on our doorstep of KZN, and what be er way to do it than on a Dual Purpose bike such as the Yamaha XT660Z Tenere. This bike breaks every rule of “you can only go where the road takes you”; nonsense I tell you, make your own way, no limits. Well fine, everything has its limits, but it just didn’t feel like that with this bike. There is no end to the amount of fun you can have on a bike such as this; road or off-road truly sa sfying; let’s ride! The first thing I liked about the Tenere, when I picked it up from Perry Yamaha, was that I could look over normal traffic and see what’s coming. Yes, I’m all for a bike that has presence on the road and this certainly plays that part no doubt. A er a while I got fed up with traffic and couldn’t wait to get to Eston and Mid-Illovo and ride this bike for what it has been built for ... dirt roads, yeah! Yes I know, I never thought I’d say that, I’m a road bike rider by heart, but this is life. Let me share some of the key features with you. The Yamaha XT660Z Tenere’s engine is used in a number of other bikes such as the Aprilia Pagaso, MT-03 as well as the XT660 X and R models. The engine accelerates cleanly from a closed thro le and pulls well for a single cylinder. Fi ed with a 660cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke single-cylinder SOHC motor, it promises to deliver a strong low to mid-range curve enough to get you in and out of any situa on. The smooth-shi ing 5-speed transmission is equipped with carefully chosen gear ra os that are designed to op mise the bike’s strong low to mid-range torque output. Underlining the machine’s serious long-distance poten al is a large-capacity 22-litre fuel tank which blends seamlessly with the beau fully sculpted front cowl. To help reduce rider fa gue on long journeys this rugged new all-rounder is equipped with a stylish front cowl and tall screen which deflect wind away from the upper body. Overall handling is good and despite the rela vely heavy weight and tall seat height the Yamaha XT660Z Tenere’s wide bars and good balance really responds well to slow speed riding. Like most motorcycles with off road abili es the forks dive harshly under braking and the rear squats under accelera on leading the bike wide out of turns. Riding off road the chassis copes well with most condi ons but I’m sure, as said earlier, even this must have limita ons. Durable ‘rally raid’ panels are fixed to vulnerable areas on the Yamaha XT660Z Tenere’s fuel tank and engine and are designed to prevent excessive damage in a fall. Small fairing is surprisingly effec ve even without the op onal taller screen. Genuine, but expensive, Yamaha accessories such as metal panniers are available. The Yamaha XT660Z Tenere’s engine is used across a wide range of machines which proves to be a solid and dependable motor. Yamaha have obviously spent me on the detail of the Tenere and tried to make the bike as user repairable as the Euro 3 rules allow. The Yamaha XT660Z Tenere has an impressive blend of on and off road ability with some neat and well thought out design touches which makes it excellent value for money. If you steer clear of Yamaha’s expensive op on list and source a ermarket parts it’s possible to have a genuine alterna ve to some of the other dual-purpose bikes on the market. What’s my final verdict? I can only add this; once you start riding the Tenere you just can not stop, I want to ride this every day for as much as I can, done!

GOD’S HALF PAGE: Blind Spots As motorcyclists we talk a great deal about visual imperfec on, every me before we do a lane change one should check the blind spot, making it safe before we travel on. There are mes when we don’t and just assume that it is clear for a lane change and end up riding into a car that was si ng in our blind spot. Where did he come from? I didn’t see him, he must’ve snuck up on me! The answer is; you didn’t check and you allowed the car into your safety-zone. Could you have avoided it? YES The devil is no different, he plays for the blind spot, and if there is such a defect in our spiritual vision, sooner or later it gets us into trouble. The blind spot in the natural eye is a necessary, unavoidable, physiological defect of which the brightest and most skillful athlete cannot rid himself. However, morally and religiously no part of our nature need be dark, and we may successfully defend ourselves in every assault. If for any subtle, selfish reason we harbor some bias of the mind, some prejudice that warps the judgment, some neglect of charity, some iner a that obstructs convic on, some devia on of aim, some deflec on in ac on, we lay ourselves open to grievous losses and sorrows. “But if we walk in the light, as GOD is in the light, we have fellowship with one another” (1 John 1:7). If we don’t have fellowship with other believers, there is a dark spot in our spiritual vision. But the Chris an whose heart is full of light enjoys the company of those of like precious faith, “and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” It is our privilege to walk in the full light, to have our whole soul instructed and illuminated. Don’t get stuck in the blind spot, it’s a dark place and it is not safe. Move forward into the light!

TECH TALK: Tyre Safety Tyres are the only points of contact between the motorcycle and the road. The total contact area between a motorcycle’s two tyres and the road is approximately 100cm2, so it’s essen al to protect the quality and performance of your tyres. INSPECTION: Tyres must be inspected on a rou ne basis for irregular wear pa erns, which can be an indica on of incorrect infla on pressure, overloading or mechanical problems. An underinflated or overloaded tyre that is ridden for a prolonged period may suffer irreversible damage that can have serious consequences, even if the tyre is returned to correct infla on pressure. Tyres should be inspected regularly, with par cular a en on paid to: - The tread area, to detect the presence of debris, cuts, deteriora on or irregular wear pa erns; - Sidewalls, to detect impact damage (from potholes or kerbs), cuts, cracking or abnormal deforma on; - The bead area, no ng any trace of abrasions or rim damage. WEAR: The primary func on of the tread is adhesion with the road. As tyre wear progresses over me, the tyre’s ability to evacuate water deteriorates; consequently, you should reduce speed on wet roads. Remember to check regularly for tyre wear, by observing tread depth and uniformity of the wear pa ern. A tyre’s durability is dependent on several major factors: - Some are within the rider’s control, such as infla on pressure, loads carried, vehicle speed and riding style. - Others are beyond the rider’s control, and require adapta on of one’s riding style: frequency of corners, type of road surface, ambient temperature. Remember that mechanical problems can also cause premature wear, including warped rims, worn suspension components, loose steering-head bearings and/or frame misalignment. Any one of these factors can have a detrimental effect on tread life; a combina on of several factors will cause significant wear. INFLATION: Correct infla on is essen al to the tyres’ safety, comfort and durability. Maintaining the bike manufacturer’s recommended infla on pressures has a posi ve effect on handling characteris cs. It is also a major influence on the motorcycle’s handling, both in a straight line and when cornering, even at moderate speeds and under braking. Riding on underinflated tyres can cause premature wear, irreversible damage to the casing and, possibly, a catastrophic defla on. Tyres lose air gradually. It is essen al to check pressure every 2 weeks, when the tyres are cold. If the pressure is checked during or a er a ride, the tyres will be hot, which will increase the indicated pressure. Never deflate tyres when they are hot. If the pressure reading is lower than the recommended pressure, air must be added to the tyre. Keep in mind that the indicated pressure of a hot tyre can be as much as 4psi higher than the recommended cold pressure. RUNNING-IN: During the first 100km of opera on a er new tyres have been fi ed, the motorcycle should be ridden at moderate speed, and cornering angles should be increased progressively, un l the tyre reaches its op mal performance. WARM-UP: During the first 10 - 20km of each ride, travel at moderate speed un l the tyres achieve opera ng temperature and op mal grip. MIXING TYRES: All recommenda ons and precau ons are based on equipping the motorcycle with the same brand tyres both front and rear to prevent unstable handling.
