KWAZULU NATAL

a word from the editor Greetings to everyone! Hey guys and gals, we’re getting closer to the holiday season and I hope you’re looking forward to it as much as I do. This year has been a great year with growth in various sections of our business and personal lives. This’ll be the 2nd last Edition for 2006 and we are still trying to make it more exciting and “read-worthy”. I truly believe you’ll find this edition helpful in many ways. Welcome to all the new advertisers in this edition, I am confident you’ll get the response you are hoping for. We also have an article on Traffic Fines which you’ll be able to use as a budget tool for your next pay-cheque. Let’s open the floor with letters from you discussing fines and traffic law enforcement in general. Our contact details are on the next page, use it and make yourself heard. Use Bike Talk as your communication channel to RTI or Metro Traffic. Another new face on the block is Darryn and AmsOil, he was kind enough to give me sample pack to use on my R1, and yes, it makes a difference alright. Read more what others had to say about AmsOil on the “In the News” section. Furthermore I’d like to bring your attention to all of the great features we have in Bike Talk, take a good look at them all and use them, it’s yours. If you have any suggestion that could make this a better tool for everyone, then write us please. The National Toy run is on the 26th of November, please see the bottom of page 6 for more details and get involved, it’s our duty as bikers to make these children happy by giving. Last but not least, pop in at your local dealer and ask about their specials, there are some very nice ones floating around town, go and find one you like. Ever wondered why leather gear costs so much, read John’s article on page 24 and learn more on what it takes into making them. Here you go people, read it, use it ... also available at a SPAR near you!!

keeping it up

by Hein Jonker

Sharing the Roadway As vehicle patterns change, motorists are learning that other vehicles on the roadway are not operated in the same manner as an automobile. The motorcycle is obviously different from a car in size and handling. THE MOTORCYCLIST, for instance, uses his/her hands to operate throttle, clutch, front brake, as well as turn signals, light switches and horn. In addition, the motorcyclist maintains steering control with his/her hands. THE MOTORIST, by comparison, uses his/her hands only to operate turn signals, light switches, horn and steering wheel – and steering is frequently power assisted. THE MOTORCYCLIST is exposed to all the elements. The motorcyclist relies on all his/her senses, including touch, in operating the motorcycle. Clothing is dictated by this exposure: motorcycle helmet manufactured to meet Department of Transportation (DOT) standards, eye protection, over-the-ankle boots, full-fingered gloves, long-sleeved jacket and long pants all protect the rider. THE MOTORIST, by contrast, is protected by lots of steel in an enclosed compartment. Operation is within the vehicle, and insulated from traffic noises and weather. Four wheels and heavy weight offer stability. THE MOTORCYCLIST must add the skills of balance and heightened awareness to the other skills necessary for safe vehicle operation. The motorcyclist must be more alert than the motorist because he/she is relatively inconspicuous in traffic. He/she must ride assuming that motorists who don’t see him/her in traffic will constantly violate his/her right-of-way. It is vital for motorists to condition themselves to look for motorcycles in traffic. The appearance of a motorcycle in a traffic situation when the motorist is not prepared can lead to a hazardous situation. The USC study showed that motorists’ failure to detect and recognize motorcycles in traffic is the predominant cause of motorcycle crashes. The driver of the vehicle did not see the motorcycle before the collision, or did not see it until it was too late to avoid the crash. Motorcyclists are not difficult to see if the motorist expects to see them. “I didn’t see him,” usually results from not looking for a motorcyclist. Both the motorist and the motorcyclist can benefit from using a simple system to heighten awareness of potential problems while on the roadway. It’s known as the SEE process and consists of the following steps: S - Search for factors in the area. E - Evaluate the potential risks and options. E - Execute with control and precision. This process causes drivers to scan ahead for potential trouble spots. You learn not to fix your gaze on any one object for more than a moment. How and where to look for hazards will become automatic. Safer highway sharing will be the result. Attitude plays an important part in creating a safe highway environment. Sharing the roadway is a good indication that motorists and motorcyclists both recognize the importance of cooperation. By curbing aggressive behavior and operating the vehicles in accordance with common sense, courtesy and the law, motorists and motorcyclists can ride together on the road.

IN THE NEWS

CASTROL EXTREME - The Castrol Xtreme Show held at Gateway on the 22-25 September was the place to be if you’re a bike and/or car enthusiast. Entrance fee was a stiff 50 bucks, which kept the number of feet passing through a little less than some dealers had hoped for, but overall it was well organized and advertised, with all stands well manned and setup. Definitely the most exciting show I’ve been to in Durban. The Buell team came to the party by setting up one of their awesome “Battletracks” – a super tight track built to show off the agility of their bikes, and just how tight and fast you can turn a Buell – free to be experienced by anyone with an “A” on their license card. Nice one guys! - Pics by Bike Talk

HUNTER MOTORCYCLES - Hunter Motorcycles has existed for 3 years as one of the biggest importers of Chinese bikes in SA; you may recognize HUNTER as the agents for LIFAN in SA. Their head offices are in Westmead with dealers throughout the country. Checking out their warehouse was a big surprise for me; the amount of spares in stock is huge! Apparently the have pretty much everything you would ever need to replace, so you can purchase with peace of mind that spares are readily available and can be couriered out overnight to dealers nationwide if necessary. Hunter Motorcycles offer a large selection of entry-level street/scramblers, commuters, scooters and quads for all ages. They also have a massive dealer network with the agricultural co-ops to distribute to small towns and communities. Their goal is to offer a quality product at a more affordable price. Good luck to Craig and the team, here’s to your continued growth! - Pics by Bike Talk

MARSHALL MOTORCYCLES - Peter’s back in town! The grand opening for Marshall Motorcycles took place Saturday, 14/10. A live band, a bit of stunting, and a MASSIVELY attended bike shop launch, congrats guys! A bike shop for bikers is the idea, a social meeting point if you like. Peter is running training aimed at enhancing advanced road riding skills and also adventure tours. Come out on Saturdays for specials on accessories. Also look out for Johnny Singh (formerly at Tommy Johns) who brings with him 21 yrs experience in spares; now running the accessories and spares department for Marshall Motorcycles. QUAD ACCESSORIES, the creation of Bennie Hayes, have been in the business 2 yrs, running full time now in the Power Centre offering outrides and loads of aftermarket conversions and accessories, all in supply within a day, if not already in stock. They have a fully equipped servicing and fitment department in house and will be stocking the American made Arctic Cat ATV’s coming mid December. TYRES EXTREME is a fitment centre specializing in motorcycle, scooter and ATV tyres. It is owned by Theo Grace and is being currently run by Chris Smit (also formerly at Tommy Johns). They carry Michelin, Continental, Bridgestone, Dunlop and Kenda. So check out Marshall Motorcycles where it is certainly all happening under one roof! - Pics by Bike Talk Guy “SMOKIE” Boulle - Shamrock Customs: Kawasaki ZX-10 “Hi, I am Guy, I have started using AMSOIL 20w/50 HIGH PERFORMANCE. I am very impressed with the heat reduction factor. The bike runs cooler on the road as well as when doing ‘STAND-UP BURN-OUTs’ & ‘DOUGHNUTS’. My ZX-10 runs cooler than ever before, I recommend you use AMSOIL!” CRAIG JOUBERT – DMC / Durban Motorcycle Centre Chicken Outfit MC. Ride: Triumph ST “AMSOIL made a marked improvement in throttle response” BRUCE WILL - Durban Motorcycle Centre Ride: DMC Kawasaki KX 250 “I have run DOMINATOR Racing 2 stroke, 20w/50 HIGH PERFORMANCE and OCTANE BOOST in my bike this whole season with great results. 20w/50 HIGH PERFORMANCE oil keeps my bike cooler and gives the clutch a good feel. I have run this season on one set of clutch plates. I have rebuilt my top end of my bike 3 times this year. I have been very impressed with what I have found from AMSOIL. Very little wear on the piston & barrel. The power valves are very clean after 3 months of racing and practice. The OCTANE BOOST has given me a good edge over competitors’ that you can feel the extra performance when mixed with pump gas.” TREVOR CRAMPTON - Durban Motorcycle Centre (Workshop Manager) “I now have many happy customers due to this superior product. Bikes are running a lot smoother and cooler. An R-1 Yamaha customer disclosed that his bike now runs at a cool 79 degrees, town riding!” MARIO REEH - MOTORCYCLE MECHANIC (HONDA & SUZUKI) Ride: CR 250F MX & Supermotards S3 “AMSOIL is the ONLY oil I will use in my bikes!”

TIDAL MOTORCYCLES - October brought with it exciting changes for Tidal Motorcycles as they moved shop to a great spot on Umgeni Road (#493). Garth and Gary bring to Durban a comprehensive range of scooters; in fact they have 6 different types of 125cc scooters alone! They carry scooters, quads and bikes made by Gomoto, Jonway, SAM and Bajaj; they also stock X-Moto and Pit-Bull pitbikes. If you’re looking for affordable biking and accessories, whether for recreation or business, give them a call. - Pics by Bike Talk

REVIEW - BMW R1200GS

Adventure

REVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRIS Auto Umhlanga has once again made one of the latest and greatest from BMW available for review. Thanks Ian for making the necessary arrangements. FIRST IMPRESSION - The GS Adventure looks big and mean enough to tackle anything. It seems quite wide and bulky, and it is tall, giving an overall sentiment of domineering toughness. A vast improvement has taken place in appearance compared to the 1150 GS it replaces. The ’06 features extensive remodelling and the revamped clocks suit the fresh and exciting lines. CONTROLS AND GADGETS - Heated grips, additional spotlights, side and rear case holders, and ABS braking that can be disconnected for off-road use are some of the many features that add to the appeal of the Adventure. Mirrors offer a completely unhindered view – what a pleasure to not have to shift arms and shoulders out of the way to check out surroundings. PERFORMANCE - The Adventure takes some time to learn and the more kay’s travelled, the more I felt in tune with the bike; and the more I understood its character, the more I enjoyed it. You want personality? The GS has it in spades! Powered by BMW’s famous Boxer flat twin-cylinder, the 1200cc redlines at a low 7750rpms but feels happier shifting long before then, giving the substantial 115Nm of torque opportunity to show itself. The smooth low down pull made so much sense on the dirt. It felt at home out in the cane fields and along dirt roads; sand, rocks, and mud are the Adventure’s playground. But it is a heavy bike so once it starts falling down, nothing’s going to stop it. Thankfully, indicators, tank and seat are well protected by crash bars, saving plenty of money over the long run if this bike is going to be utilized to its full potential. Gear changes are smooth and precise every time, allowing multiple shifts at a time without a hint of stickiness – every clutch setup should feel this good. SUSPENSION & HANDLING - The chunky GS offered its biggest surprise in the handling arena. At 256kg’s fully fuelled, there is a lot of bike to handle. But wide handlebars and tall seat height allows it to be flipped from side to side with little effort. Handling has a playful nature, with surprisingly good road handling allowing peg scraping around bends with a bit of concentration – even with multi-terrain knobblies on, surprisingly enough. I did find the frame quite flexi, giving a bit of a bouncy, unpredictable feeling through corners as the wheels move out of line with each other. Suspension is on the soft side, hopping ditches and sidewalks in its stride. COMFORT - The high seat may be an issue for shorter riders, but this bike really needs every inch of its ground clearance to handle the types of terrain it’s made for. A long stretch to the pegs, upright seating position and a really comfy seat makes for an ideal long distance traveller. Pillion position is well furnished with solid grabrails, a wide cushion and relaxed peg positions. The windscreen is adjustable and gave great protection for effortless cruising at 150kmh+. Protection was not just offered by the screen – hand savers, the extra duckbill mudguard in the front, and well-designed frame surrounding the tank meant the only evidence of a quick trek through the mud is a splash or two on the boots. This surely is the gentleman’s venture bike! OVERALL RATING - A multi-tasker proficient in numerous areas is what big adventure bikes are all about. I found the big Beemer’s handling on tar to be light-footed, entertaining and capable. Off-road was where expectations were certainly exceeded; the type of terrain this 1200 takes in its stride would suit trail bikes half the size. If you’ve lived on the tar most your life, you may be surprised how much fun you can safely have on a bike outbound for adventure. Go on – discover some of this country of beauty which we inhabit. PRICE R125900.00 including VAT R140000.00 full house. Including but not limited to: panniers, top case, tank bag.

REVIEW - HUNTER YX 250 REVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRIS Thanks to Craig from Hunter Motorcycles for organizing one of the brand-new-on-the-market Hunter YX250’s for review. A special thanks also to Dylan at Hunter for taking care of the necessary adjustments to get it running perfect for us. FIRST IMPRESSION - The YX 250 is defined as a street scrambler, but styling looks very much scrambler, with additional lights, indicators, and a plate in order to make it through COR. In fact, off-road is the YX’s forte; sugarcane fields and bush trails brought out its best. Excellent ground clearance also alludes to its off-road bias, as well as a strong, flexible engine guard. This Hunter really looks cool; if it were my first bike I’d definitely be smiling! Another noticeable feature is the pillion grab-rails, which have useful little knobblies on them to tie down luggage. Electric start and kick start are both present, assumedly saving the rider from searching for a downhill or a willing mate to push when the battery dies. PERFORMANCE - The spunky bottom-end is engaging and lively, wheelie-ing easily with slight clutch involvement in first and second gear. Top-end through the revs is the weak point though, but a top speed of about 110-115kph on the flats is held on mild inclines without dropping a gear. This would be a good bike to learn on in many ways; not fast enough to kill yourself on, but fun and playful, with the versatility to discover where your passion lies – whether on-road or off-road or both. A simple engine layout allows for easy access, necessitating only basic mechanical knowledge to DIY. SUSPENSION & HANDLING - Suspension was certainly the standout for me on this bike. Hefty gold upsidedown front forks look awesome and work great. The 21inch rims up front handle rocks and sand happily. The bright red rear mono-shock is also attractive and is adjustable. This Hunter handled some pretty serious enduro type terrain with no problem; with enough suspension travel to keep it from bottoming out even when landing jumps a bit flat. COMFORT - Typical on/off road seating position: comfortable upright position and soft seat; wide, tall handlebars that are equally comfortable in a standing or a seated position; and useful mirrors due to the wide bars. One thing that was annoying was the kick-start lever; it stuck out from the engine and got in the way when riding in a standing position. RUNNING COSTS - The YX250 comes shod with rigid compound Kenda tyres that sacrifice grip for long life, so, while feeling loose in the wet, replacements will be few and far between. But that’s what this bike is all about – keeping more of the green stuff in your wallet. Kenda’s recommended retail price for replacement rubber is R230.00 for the front and R320.00 for the rear. The big money saver though (other than the price tag) is the fuel consumption. Manufacturers claim a miserly 2.9 litres to 100kms (34.5km per litre), almost three times more economical than what can be expected from a car and about twice that of the average motorcycle. OVERALL RATING - I’ve had the opportunity to go to the Hunter warehouse and see the vast amount of parts in stock, so spares honestly shouldn’t be a problem. A good first bike for many, the YX is probably best suited for individuals planning to make use of its versatility, or those living in more rural areas. At this price it’s all about value for money. PRICE - R15950.00 including VAT

GOD’s HALF PAGE Why the Doctor Arrived Too Late It was almost one o’clock in the morning when the phone rang in the Winters’ home. Dr. Leon Winter, the highly acclaimed Chicago surgeon, was awakened with a start. Tonight it was a young boy, they said, tragically mangled in a late night accident. Couldn’t someone else handle it? Not this time. This time his hands were possibly the only ones in the city, or maybe in the whole region, which were skilled enough to save. The quickest route happened to be through a rather rough area, but with time being a critical factor, it was worth the risk. He almost made it through the worst of the neighborhood. Almost. Then, at a stop light, his door was jerked open by a man in a gray hat and a dirty flannel shirt. “I’ve got to have your car!” the man screamed, pulling him from his seat. Winters tried explaining the gravity of his situation, but the man was not listening. The doctor wandered for over 45 minutes looking for a phone. When the taxi finally got him to the hospital, over an hour had passed. He burst through the doors and into the nurses’ station, but the nurse on duty only shook her head. Too late. The boy had just died about 30 minutes earlier. “His dad got here just before he died,” the nurse told him. He is in the chapel. Go see him, would you? He is awfully confused. He could not understand why you never came.” Without explaining, Dr. Winters walked hurriedly down the hall and quietly entered the chapel. At the front knelt the huddled form of a weeping father, in a gray hat and a dirty flannel shirt. Tragically, he had pushed from his life the only one who could save. How many today are pushing from their lives the only One who can save?

run feedback

This was our first visit to the Hippo, great venue, facilties (toilets etc.), lots of space to move around in. Well attended by bikers from all over the country and the odd bike on fire, what can I say ... jammer pal. Food was good, stunts were ok and yes, what’s a rally without a “trike”, dyno’s, burn-outs, smoke and coffee from CMA. You might have your opinion or experience regarding the Hippo ... write and tell us - Pics by Bike Talk

CMA South Coast 1st Birthday Bash has come and gone, sorry guys and girls, coffee only. There were a good number of loyal supporters, something that all off us can do with. Thank you Gerrit and his team for having us and may you grow from strength to strength. Here is to another year of hard work in the name of our Lord - Pics by Bike Talk

REVIEW - buell cityx xb9sx REVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRIS Thanks again to Matthew and Max from HarleyDavidson Durban who have offered up another Buell for review. The first was the multi-terrain, multi-capable Ulysses (see September edition); this now is the urban focused CityX (pronounced “city cross”). FIRST IMPRESSION - The extremely compact dimension of the Lightning blew me away! This bike looks like it will be easy to manhandle and ride aggressively because of its stature, and indeed it is easy, in fact the Lightning’s behaviour elicits assertiveness. Unique to the rest of the motorcycle world is the eye-catching hero blue translucid flyscreen and airbox cover (would be the petrol tank, but fuel is held in the frame to improve mass centralization) allowing you to see some of the inner workings of this truly naked bike. One useful accessory is the rubber X-guard on the airbox cover that, as well as looking the biz, protects the tank from scratches when carrying some extra gear in a tank bag. CONTROLS AND GADGETS - Consistent with all Buells, the CityX is certainly a no-frills setup in the controls department. Forget the extras, the CityX strips itself bare of the nonessentials, and rightly so I believe, for it would seem out of place on a Buell to include them. This bike is about “focus on the road ahead”, little else; although to be honest, an upgrade to more modern styled controls (lights, indicators, horn, etc.) wouldn’t hurt its image. PERFORMANCE - The revvy 984 cc air/oil/fan cooled, fuel-injected 45° V-Twin is a perky muscle block suited to dodging cars and darting through traffic with agility and might. 86Nm of torque give it the best torque-toweight ratio in its class. This “muscle to the ground” power instigates the sort of aggressive in-town riding that requires a great deal of concentration to perform safely, but offers a great deal of satisfaction in return. SUSPENSION & HANDLING - The CityX feels so small and reactive; it really is the ultimate play-bike for stunting and messing about. An ultra-short 1321mm wheelbase, 21-degree fork angle (rake) and 85mm of trail gives the Lightning razor-sharp reflexes. (FYI – Rake is the angle of the fork away from vertical toward the rider. Trail is the distance on the ground between a vertical line dropped straight down from the center of the wheel and a projection of the fork extended until it touches the ground. As the rake increases, the trail increases. The more rake, the more stable the handling – the less rake, the sharper the handling.) Feedback is super consistent through corners thanks to a couple things that work together: firstly the lightweight and extremely rigid aluminum frame and swingarm keeping wheel alignment rock solid, and secondly, the chunky 43mm inverted Showa front forks which, beyond offering exceptional handling, look extremely serious! COMFORT - Grasping the wide supermotard-inspired handlebars promotes an aggressive squared off look to elbows and shoulders. Add to this a stress-free-on-the-wrists upright seating position and the rider is in a physical pose seething with menace and attitude. The pillion seat cuts the apparent bike dimensions short by removing the usual plastics around the seat. This furthers the look of extreme dimensions, making the seat appear almost ornamental, not likely offering a decent position. But appearances are deceiving: the pillion rider’s opinion was that she found it surprisingly adequate, and the overall ride silky, due to smooth throttle response and lack of engine vibration. OVERALL RATING - The XB9SX is competitively priced as an entry into the hotly contested open-class naked-bike market, but price is about the only thing comparable to its rivals. Handling and power response is vastly unlike other options out there. It is just something you have to experience for yourself to fathom. PRICE R86500.00 including VAT & registration

REVIEW - suzuki bergman 400 REVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRIS First off, a word of appreciation is in order for Gary at Umpleby Suzuki for organizing us a test day aboard Suzuki’s Burgman 400. Scooters are becoming more popular by the day as people are recognizing their financial viability and convenience of use in city traffic. But who wants to putt down the freeway at 100kph? Enter the businessmen’s scooter: 400cc’s of Burgman luxury. FIRST IMPRESSION - The Burgman 400 is a truly classy affair, its low ground clearance and lengthy 1590mm wheelbase give a stretchedlimousine like appearance. From the 5-spoke wheelbarrow size mags to the shiny chrome mirrors, this scooter has style! CONTROLS AND GADGETS - The dashboard (an unusual term to be found in a bike review, I know) is home to clocks that look like they’ve been stolen off a Boeing, which suit perfectly the common thread of sophistication and refinement. Below the clocks and handlebars are two small storage compartments on each side for wallets, cell phones and such, and below that is one large cubbyhole that could hold files or paperwork. Under seat storage holds two helmets easily with room to spare. The seat lifts itself hydraulically with a turn of the key in the ignition; get ready to impress your friends and colleagues! PERFORMANCE - Power is derived from a 385cc 4-stroke, single-cylinder, SOHC, 4-valve motor, which is liquid-cooled, the final drive being executed by shaft. The Burgman is an automatic – a V-belt, CVT automatic, to be precise. Continuously variable transmission or CVT is a type of automatic transmission which can smoothly alter its gear ratio by varying the diameter of a pair of belt-linked cones. Let me explain… A belt is used to connect two opposing cones, these cones move in and out giving the same effect as changing the pulley diameter on a standard transmission since the belt or chain must take a large-diameter path when the conical pulley halves are close together. This makes actual gear changes non-existent; and while this makes for very smooth acceleration, the traditional abrupt gear changes disappear, negating the expected jerkiness associated with torque, giving a false sense of a lack of apparent power. For example… In my first few minutes on the Burgman I was headed down a city street and decided to give the throttle a little tweak to pull away from traffic. All is well, I pull ahead nicely and glance down at the speedo, the clock says 80, which is about what I had expected, but jeepers I’m only leaving the traffic behind at a rapid pace! Take another look at the speedo… I am doing 80… 80mph (130kph)! The acceleration is just so smooth that it becomes difficult to judge actual speed. SUSPENSION & HANDLING - As long as the direction is straight, stability is a not an issue, even at the +150kmp/h top-speed, but tight cornering reveals spongy suspension, while any form of disruption of road surface mid-bend causes it to become quite unsettled. This is of course the great trade off – supreme comfort in and around town reducing all minor bumps and jolts, at the cost of (or perhaps the loss of) solid handling, a trait that the Burgman sacrifices willingly, and rightly so – this is, after all, the most elegant ride one can expect on two wheels. Brakes feel soft and require a hard squeeze on the levers to get the desired reaction, remember this is a scooter so no rear foot brake, both brakes are on your handlebars. COMFORT - There are two feet positions to choose from, the standard scooter flat-foot, and then the super comfy chopper-like feet position stretched out in front of you at a 45 degree angle, very useful for keeping you from sliding off the seat under hard breaking. The driver’s position is graced with a lower back rest that added a great deal more comfort to an already accommodating fully-upright position; this is the ideal vehicle for touring if you’re one of those “I like to take it easy and enjoy the scenery” type people, the passenger gets a back rest too, and is provided with more than enough seating room. Passenger position is much higher than the operator’s allowing an unobstructed view above the driver’s head, which is great. This also means the passengers head is well above the wind protection of an otherwise ample screen, which is not so great. OVERALL RATING - In the words of a certain salesman at Umpleby Suzuki, “This is the Mercedes-Benz of scooters” and indeed it is. PRICE - R44,500.00 including VAT

FACTORY VISIT

”CHINA”

(Written by John Briscoe of Gear Up)

Cheap, inferior, mass-produced goods – right? Wrong! Their goods are mass-produced sure, but not necessarily cheap and nasty. Look out the ‘West’ here comes what is going to be the biggest commercial giant of the world. There is a view, which suggests that the commercial power of the world is going to swing to the East – if it hasn’t already. Just the pure size of the market and the productivity ratios of the people make the West’s recent track record pale into insignificance! On a recent exploratory trip to the east, the Arleness/Berik factories were visited. Based on this experience, one can rest assured that the quality standards and the dedication of the factory workers to produce a quality garment is something that may be foreign to us South Africans! 15 500 staff spread through out the various operations, two and a half million dollars in raw leather at any one time, a ten and a half hour day split into three 3 hour sessions, Italian designers, Japanese disciplinarians, the Chinese work ethic, supervisors for every 5 to 7 workers, quality control staff at the end of each line, light and airy work conditions, homes for the staff on the factory property, schooling provided for the staff’s children and finally just wanting to do a good job – all lead to a great product!

IN-STORE SPECIALS!

CA L L 0 3 1 - 5 6 6 4 9 3 2

This is just one of many quality operations. Yes, sure, the “cheap and nasty’s” still exist but wow are these people changing rapidly or what! Just to give you an idea of the enormity of the country and why the Chinese have this superior work ethic, consider the fact that 300 million people went on holiday during the Republic of China’s week long celebrations. This is at least six times our total population just going on holiday over one week! If you don’t produce there is someone else who will. Many other reasons no doubt exist, but this nation is on a mission to become a commercial super power! Take note and perhaps hook up and make the South African experience a better one (through dealing with quality operations such as Arleness and Berik) rather than trying to fight it – this is one battle you may lose!
