THE EDITOR: In a Nutshell Well here I am, just back from walking my fish down “River Road” into “Flood Crescent” and up “Rain Street”. I don’t know about you but this rain has put a damper on many a ride, but as they say: “What comes down must go up”, in biking terms anyway. The rain comes down and must evaporate again so we can go for a ride ek sê!
to truly get out there and explore our beauful country on the ulmate mode of transport – a motorcycle. Preston (Xkulcha) and I recently decided to put their riding pants to the test and I offered to get dragged on my bu ed to a bike; be sure to read up on that and then go out and get yourself a pair at your local dealer. I also cast an eye on some very cool retro machines, a category very up and coming in South Africa. People are geng red of nailing it to the wall every me when they ride and are now going back to basics – Retro Style! On GOD’s Corner I share some truth with you, and to some this might be a wake-up call. Either way it is the truth and some of us need to hear it before it is too late.
So in this issue, eager and expecng, I’ll be tempng you into doing something extraordinary. You’ll either go for a ride, or you’ll go and buy one. Either way, do something about it! I start you off by explaining Scooter Wheels and how it can affect the scoot’s handling, plus we encourage you to support some of thes events on our What’s On Calendar. Two of our readers, Faizel and Jacques, share their stories, enjoying their rides and what our beauful province has to offer.
On the Reviews menu I’ve tested a legend called Stelvio NTX1200 by MotoGuzzi and the pinnacle of scooter awesomeness, the new BMW C650GT. I’m not going to elaborate too much on these right now, but flip to those pages and read for yourself, then go out and take one for a spin to experience these new machines first-hand. Further excing news is that we are in the process of launching a naonal publicaon called SA Cruiser Magazine, to address and exclusively promote the bikes, people and lifestyle that goes with this more relaxed and growing market. Unl the next issue people, be safe, enjoy your rides, get trained and look out for other road users out there. Don’t become a stasc, be a survivor!
In the News for a change, we introduce the already established Davida Store to you and what they present in regards to retro helmets and apparel. BMW Motorrad Umhlanga has moved their showroom to the main building and managed to squeeze in a new staff member as well. Charley Boorman explored South Africa not too long ago for a new documentary that will air in early 2013. The Biker Store now offers the Xkulcha range of extreme apparel targeted at their cruiser market. John from Gear Up encourages us to take the Wild Road every now and again

KEEPING IT UP: Scooter Wheels Explained Big Wheel vs. Small Wheel Scooters
Scooters are oen used as a way to get around that’s both good on fuel as well as easy on the pocket. They generally weigh less than motorcycles, but are also slower. However, the type of wheels that you have on a scooter, whether they’re big or small, can make a lot of difference. There is no doubt, when you think scooter the Vespa “look” is more like what you’d expect but you’ll find scooter wheels are geng larger and larger. Take a look at Honda’s Vision 110 Scooter and any of the Big Boy Scooters. The Honda Vision or Honda PCX are fied with big diameter wheels where the Big Boy Scooters (and other Chinese and Korean brands) are fied with Small Diameter wheels.
More common these days are that scooters are geng 12” and 13” inch wheels. So what is the advantage? In a word handling. Small wheels and tyres make for incredibly quick steering. Perhaps a bit too much so which could make the scooter very unstable at higher speeds. It’s not as big a factor at slower speeds but the more powerful the scooter the faster it will go and the more likely instability could occur. Ever used roller blades or a skate board? Not much fun when those lile wheels jam on a pebble and throw you down is it? Well the same applies to scooter wheels. Small wheels transmit bumps and jolts to the rider much more severely than larger ones do. The larger the wheel the larger and object it can roll over without ill effect. Larger wheeled scooters also seem to have a bit more ground clearance for cornering and a slightly larger contact patch on the road (Although some small wheels have obscenely wide tyres like the Yamaha Bee Wizz and PGO T-Rex). Other factors include road hazards. You’ll find uneven road surfaces, cracks in the road, low shoulders and more are
all very dangerous to motorcycles in general but especially to ones with small diameter wheels. I’ve also noced a big difference in the reacon to loose gravel or rain between smaller wheeled scooters and larger. You are much more likely to lose all tracon to the front tyre under braking on a small wheel bike than one with big wheels.Larger tyres tend to be a bit more durable too. When you take a 150cc scooter with 10” wheels and one with 16” wheels it seems the smaller tyre wears out faster. Mostly this affects the drive tyre. Smaller wheels do offer poorer handling than larger wheels do, however. The width of a re more than its diameter is important when discussing handling, because the wider the re is the more area of the ground it’s touching. The beer the re’s contact with the ground, the more control the rider will have while riding the scooter. As such, smaller wheels will be harder to control than larger wheels on any sort of ride, whether it’s smooth or rough. So what are the disadvantages to large tyres? Mostly onboard storage. When you put larger wheels on a scooter the engine moves forward, the fuel tank usually ends up in the floor plaorm of the scooter and the baery gets shoves forward. This means under seat storage suffers. This is overcome by the addion of a top box mounted to the rear rack. Also if your heart is set on “classic” looks most larger wheel scooters have a more contemporary design. Personally, I will stay very far away from a Small Wheel Scooter, if they were so “good” or “stable” why don’t they make Small Wheel Super Bikes or Dual Purpose Bikes. I rest my case; Small Diameter is for coins not for bikes. So the choice is yours. There are millions of ny wheeled scooters out there. Experience and training will allow you to operate them safely. They are best suited to slower situaons but with care can be ridden faster. Larger wheeled scooters are usually a bit more confidence inspiring and ride a bit beer over a variety of road condions. You can push them a bit harder in corners and they are just a tad more forgiving. Just laying it out there for your consideraon; rather pay lile more for a good quality Big Diameter Wheeled Scooter than compromising safety. Ride safe!

READER STORIES: Faizel and Jacques The drive home was a quiet one with me deep in thought; shaered dreams have that effect on a person. Was my wannabe biker journey going to end as quickly as it started? It took all of one night for me to hatch plan B. I need a smaller bike - CBR 250R to the rescue. Within a few days and aer consultaon with the ever helpful Hein I visited a dealer, signed the deal and my brand new CBR 250, LadyC, is delivered home. I decide to only ride really early in the mornings or late at nights when there is lile to no traffic. My first ride goes well without too much drama, except with a few cars geng too close for comfort. And the primary reason for that, yes you guessed it – riding too slowly. I think my beer half was more relieved than I upon me arriving home in one piece. Every day that week I grew braver, riding a bit further and a bit faster than I did the previous day. With all of that I sll managed to embarrass myself a lot on the bike. What with me being the first person in my extended family with a bike, I get an audience when I arrive and leave when vising relaves. Switching off when taking off is my favourite party trick. Parking badly comes in a close second. No pressure while everyone is watching you and you are trying to reverse the bike uphill using the foot-omac reverse gear. I keep learning with every ride and now give up my “night rider” tle and venture out during the day and take the bike on the freeway. An apt comparison of 80km/h to 120km/h on a bike is a breadknife compared to a chainsaw. Wind, wind and more wind. I now know what the bobble head dog at the back of car feels like. Hein has a nice arcle on his website to help deal with the wind when riding.
Diary of a wannabe biker - 1500km Later I have to get a bike. That was the monkey on my back for all of a month, growing larger day by day. And it couldn’t be just any bike, it had to be a CBR 600 RR, it had the under seat exhaust pipes and the fighter jet look and made me drool every me I saw her. I would fondly name her Chrisne and we would live happily ever aer. Being the super brave man that I am, I am selling my wife’s car to get the CBR as well (and I sll sleep INSIDE the house - a testament to me already evolving into a bad boy biker). And then something catastrophic happened. It was a stunning winter’s day in Durban, like most of them are. A wisp of chill in the air made the breeze more refreshing than cold. The bright sun peeked out from the lazy clouds under a gorgeous blue sky. My kit was next to me in the Yaris as I made my way to visit a dealer that was willing to swop my wife’s Yaris for a 2009 CBR 600 RR. Face to face with the bike of my dreams, she looked stunning in HRC colours. At first glance my emoons were both awe and inmidaon. And then the owner started the bike up and she quickly turned into “the girl you never asked out in high school cos she would publicly humiliate you”. But this is what I have always wanted, so I brushed aside my fear, put on my kit and took the owner up on his offer of a test ride on my dream machine in the basement. Up to that point in me, the total sum of my bike riding experience was 1 day of MRC training with Hein on a 150cc bike in an open parking lot with lots of space. I was now on a powerful machine in a much smaller basement with lots of pillars and even more cars. I switched the bike off 3 mes trying to take off which made the owner even more nervous than me. Eventually I get going and in my usual fashion poer around the basement. The ride was all of 2 minutes but it was one of the scariest 2 minutes of my life. The bike felt big, heavy, way too powerful and I could see myself easily geng into all sorts of trouble. I thank the relieved owner and le.
Weeks go by and LadyC and I are now prey comfortable. I don’t switch off, park beer, ride beer and feel more confident. My plan was 2000km on LadyC for experience and then move onto a bigger bike, Plan B - the sensible approach. And with me not being so sensible, plan C kicks in aer a paltry 500km’s. Honda has a special on the CBR 600. Okay, so it’s the “F” and not the RR. It has a detuned version of the RR motor and pumps out a healthy 75kW. I want one. LadyC is traded in and I pick up my CBR 600 F. The first ride is much beer as I kinda know what I am doing. The bike feels grown up with a smoother ride, smoother clutch and smoother gear changes. It also comes with a scienfic formula, the amount you twist the throle is directly proporonate to the smile you have on your face. Moving from 20kW to 75kW is pure awesomeness. It’s amazing to have available power in all gears and she accelerates quicker than anything I have ever driven. The 600 F is fondly named Celia (from Monsters Inc.) as she is my lile monster and will be unl Plan D comes into play. Lessons I have learnt that there are many perils when riding a motorcycle. We can start with drivers – see if you can spot
8
READER STORIES: Faizel and Jacques them when riding: • The Weaver –enjoys straddling in your lane, even when driving at slow speeds, to see if you panic and go into the bush • The Serial Braker – brakes for no apparent reason, commonly seen on the fast lane of any freeway/ highway • The Fashion Police – will tail you unnecessary closely, I can only presume it’s to see what brand of jeans I am wearing • Petrol Watcher – tries to save petrol by not indicang when turning. Has also found a way to reduce consumpon by not switching lights on at night
Then there are dogs. The worst bunch of roaming dogs in my area is on a road with speed bumps, so I can’t speed off when they try to chase me. I have tried to avoid that road altogether. Scking to main roads helps as the roads are too busy for owners to be negligent with their dogs. High speed bends are sll scary for me. Where most bikers love the twises, I tend to pucker up when approaching a bend and talk myself through it. My main problem is that I don’t know my limits or the limits of the bike. I guess that will come in me and with more training. Well that’s it for my 1500 km update. It’s been a fantasc journey with each ride being special in its own way. I have learnt a lot and met some interesng, helpful and wonderful people. Am I sll a wannabe biker? I think so and will get my biker stripes when I start enjoying the bends. If you see me on the roads, please wave. How would you recognise me you ask?
I haven’t found ways of properly dealing with all of them, largely due to me being unable to operate a bazooka while riding. Normally riding as far away as possible from all of them or slowing down to let them pass helps. The slowing down may be bad for the ego but it is really good for the preservaon of skin and bones.
I am the guy that trucks are overtaking on bends. Bad Boy Wannabe Biker Faizel ship. This road brings out the adventure in adventure bike. Nonetheless, we were rewarded with the best the Golden Gate could conjure up. This part of the world lies close to my heart and I had my fellow adventurers stopping around every corner for another look and another photo session. Heading into Clarens, we realized why accommodaon bookings were tougher than a half cooked goat chop. This small town was celebrang a centenary and there were bikers, boere and tourists everywhere. Enough me for a quick look-around and we were off again. This me to the 7-11. No, not the convenience store, but one of the best kept secrets of biker heaven. The R711 between Clarens and Fouriesburg offers some of the best riding and scenery in the Free-State in my humble opinion. No potholes to dodge here…at least for a few kilometres. Clarens, Fouriesburg and Ficksburg must surely share the tle for Sandstone capital of South Africa, as here you can see some spectacular old coages constructed mainly of the local, abundant and familiar yellow and redish sandstone.
900km Out and Back Well, the weatherman was suggesng that we call this trip off, but the six bike strong brigade would have none of it! And so we le Amanzimto on the Saturday morning in the rain bound for Fouriesburg via any alternave route we could find. No tollgate skipping, thank you, officer!
Here we seled for a night of meat on the fire and good old fashioned fellowship. Not too late though, because the morning, following breakfast, we would make the return journey along mostly the same route. In the rain, the road between Golden Gate and down to Bergville became really tricky and this was without any ginger beer. Aer a nerve wrecking hour, we were back on the all too familiar N3, with only the good memories of the past 24 hours to keep the smile on your face. This is a very achievable, out and back trip even for a fairly novice rider. In good weather I might suggest. Go ahead and give it a go! - Jacques
Heading through Nongham Road, the weather started to ease off a bit, and aer a greasy breakfast in Mooi River, it was off to find the usual ginger beer stop near Bergville. This stuff makes you dodge potholes that don’t even exist…But trust me: You will need it considering the poor state they seem to have le the Olivier’s Hoek Pass in. It truly seems as if a road building contractor has abandoned

GEARING UP: Taking the Wild Road Too many of us have these wonderful machines and all the gear but really don’t get out and use it enough! Yes mes are hard, petrol prices are high and yes the sun will come up tomorrow!
always a useful number – two shared rooms and if there is a problem two to ride for help and one to stay with the person who has the problem. You’ll be amazed how quickly you start finding some really interesng places that suit your riding style and how many people start hooking up with you. From these weekend escapades you find the longer trips become a reality. The roads you enjoy, the gear you use, the appropriate tyres, the luggage combinaons all start making sense and suddenly your desnaons start becoming more and more exoc!
So what am I on about? Too many guys have this wonderful dream of riding South Africa and seeing the ‘other’ side and very few actually make it happen. There are many reasons for this! The key one is just a nagging doubt as to whether they really want to rough it, or are their skills up to it etc , etc. I aended the Dirt Zone 500 recently in the northern Zululand and wow what a tough ride this turned out to be – rain, mist, mud and sand and more sand and then some really thick mud and then just to end off with a stretch of really slippery forestry road. The 50 odd riders who turned up for the event just couldn’t rave enough about the fun they had out there! Similarly the 600 people who turned up for the BMW Eco event in Clocolan also had a grand me for their R800-00 contribuon for a camping spot, hot showers, three dinners and two lunches! Not to menon the absolutely amazing routes organised by the BMW Clubs Africa team! We have many people coming through the shop and on the Country Trax courses all asking the same quesons but very few making the effort to take the me off and go and explore with their bikes. There is so much wrien on websites such as ‘Wild Dog’, Adventure Riders and no doubt many more but people sll wait for organised events to really enjoy the sport of riding our bikes in this wonderful country of ours.
Gear Up will be offering GPS courses on a quarterly basis to enable erstwhile riders to get the most out of their devices and mapping soware. Simultaneously we will be seng ‘praccal exercises to ensure that people get out and about and not only enjoy riding but get to see our wonderful country. In this way we will be killing two birds with one stone – by encouraging folk to ride and also to give them the inial guidance required to be a lile more independent of the big organised events. The fesve season is upon us and I really urge you all to wear ‘all the gear all the me’ (ATGAT), enjoy the break from the daily grind and to enjoy the opportunies facing you as a rider! Happy Christmas and have a wonderful New Year! - Wrien by John Briscoe
So what do you do to make it happen? My suggeson is simple – pick a desnaon that is close to home e.g. no more than 3 or 4 hours ride. Make a booking. Then decide on the route there and back. Once you have this sorted why not invite three other bikes to join you. Four is

XTREME TEST: Riding Pants to see what would happen under extreme abrasion tesng and they were very surprised. They knew that under such severe tesng the abrasion would wear the fabric through but just how much and the effect it will have on the wearer was the queson they wanted answered. ”Our jeans are sold with a compact foam hip and knee impact absorber and we wanted a final damage assessment with all the elements in place. Hein was wearing only a pair of pants and a double layer of compact foam (just in case) between his bu and the road”, says Preston van Wyk. TEST In Umhlanga Ridge near Durban in the heart of the city’s motorcycle retail center, a road was selected and marked over a distance of 100m with cones at 30m, 40m and 50m. Nic Broodryk, a trusted friend of Hein, agreed to ride a Honda Crosstourer and pull Hein at an average speed of 55km/h. The idea was to drag-test different products over the various distances and see how they hold up. Hein would be ed, feet first, to the bike using a nylon rope with a quick-release in place to let go at the various markers.
It is well known that Cowboys Don’t Cry (Pty) Ltd, the company behind the X-Kulcha brand of Extreme Lifestyle Apparel, stand bravely behind their product. In some cases more than is required. If you have an accident in one of their biker jeans they will recall the product requesng a tesmonial of the circumstances surrounding the fall and upon evaluaon (if the garment can not be repaired), they will give you a new garment. Nice guys aren’t they? Dozens of tesmonials reflect grateful customers who speak well of the product and professional service that backs up the product in the real world.
The first product they tested was the Enduro jean where the ATF is 1000d high strength Nylon and at 35m at a top speed of 55km he stood up with a smile. The garment, as
XTREME TEST Recently however they took ‘standing behind their product’ one step further, and had someone dragged behind a motorcycle in four of their products across various distances to see how the product would perform under severe abrasion tesng. This someone who was brave enough to sit his bu down on asphalt is in fact a crash vicm and survivor in one of X-Kulcha’s Biker X jeans. He is none other than Bike Talk Editor and Senior Instructor, Hein Jonker. ‘Having survived an accident in 2008 and having received a new pair of jeans, I was impressed with the product and the company’s commitment to back their product and today I am their agent in KZN.” OBJECTIVE Preston, the designer of the brand, did not feel he needed to validate that his product does what it promises to do; aer all they have received almost thirty accident damaged pants back from clients over the last five years, and the results more than proves that these pants ‘hold up’ in real world crash situaons. They were curious about the results they would get under extreme abrasion condions. They chose four products that you can buy off the shelf at any dealer, in which they used three different types of ATF (Advanced Technology Fabrics) Kevlar, Cordura and Ballisc Nylon. Preston and Hein decided to push the boundaries
18
XTREME TEST: Riding Pants in tact and no bruises or burns to his backside. Needless to say everyone was extremely impressed. The final product to be tested was a Kevlar jean and keeping our previous experience in mind we took the necessary care to make sure that all goes according to plan. The jeans were dragged over a distance of 60m at a top speed of 55km. The results were impressive and no damage was done to Hein’s rear end. FACTS Immediately aer the tests were completed a huge discussion amongst all who were present flared up and opinions and conclusions were being offered almost as if they were surrounded by experts. Preston and Hein’s conclusion is the following: In any accident scenario you will most likely never find your self sliding in a stac or same posion for the 40, 50, 60 and 80m like our test subject. In fact it was absolutely clear in every drag that the moment Hein released he came to a complete stop within 2 to 3m aer travelling at an average speed of 55km. Of the different types of ATF the results prove that the Ballisc Nylon held up the best by a very small margin and the overall results proved that the ATF does what it promises to do – protect you for the fall. FINAL CONCLUSION As for our pants, they all held up well under a highly extreme test and although all the fabrics were worn through to the bu pads, we got the results we were looking for. Our jeans/pants are not just a regular pair of jeans (which will come off you within the first 5m of your fall), but are an engineered garment that looks like a regular jean, wears like a regular jean, and performs like a top level protecve wear product. Video clips can be viewed on the BikeTalk YouTube channel - www.youtube.com/user/BikeTalkSA
they expected, had some damage but the abrasion did not wear through the first layer of 4mm padding. Everyone was impressed. Yes even the spectators stood in awe not believing that a real live person agreed to something of this nature.

The second garment tested was a Biker X jean and the ATF was Ballisc Nylon. All went according to plan and over a distance of 45m and 55km top speed Hein once again got up and all was good. The damage was minimal considering the severity of the test and everyone was even more impressed. The third garment tested was the new Dakar adventure pants which is 100% airflow 2000d Cordura. Here a small error in tying their release knot from Hein to the bike almost caused a “real world” accident. Luckily everyone was on the ball and the near mishap did not result in any serious damage except to the Dakar pants. The drag eventually happened over 80m at a top speed of 60km and we were all relieved to find Hein in one piece with his head

OVERVIEW: Retro is Alive and Kicking BONNEVILLE T100 Bang up to date engineering. Retro meets modern. Doublebarrelled, fuel-injected responsiveness from the 865cc parallel twin. Smooth pulling, double-barrelled fun. A mellow backbeat from the twin peashooter exhausts. Chrome engine covers. Black instrument surround with tacho. Triumph logo on the seat. Two-tone paint. Spoked wheels. Fork gaiters. You got the look. Motorcycling the way it’s meant to be. Ride it with a smile. Classic Sixes style wouldn’t be complete without spoked wheels or peashooter exhausts that hark back to the very first Bonnevilles of 1959. Modern disc brakes, suspension and steel cradle frame blend seamlessly into the package and ensure that the T100 is tough enough for today’s road condions. Tradional two-tone colour schemes with hand finished coachlines, or meless Jet Black alternaves on the black edion, fit the character of the T100 and complete the period look. MOTO GUZZ V7 RACER The Moto Guzzi V7 Racer pays homage to the extraordinary racing career of the V7 Sport. The Moto Guzzi V7 Racer offers the classic style of the Moto Guzzi marquee in a perfectly balanced mix of crasmanship and technology. With a feisty motor, number plate, and solo saddle, the eye-catching V7 Racer harkens back to the glories of yesteryear--only topped off with modern engineering to make every turn a visceral experience. The disncveness of the V7 Racer design is sporty and aenon-geng in all the right ways. A new chrome fuel tank finished with a studded leather strap, a singlesaddle suede seat with an aerodynamic seat cowl and ‘70s-style racer number plates mean the added engine performance is showcased right along with classic style. One look, and a rider will know that the V7 Racer speaks for itself. KWASASKI W800 The Kawasaki W800 is a motorcycle produced by Kawasaki since 2011. The W800 is a retro style model that emulates the Kawasaki W series, and replaced the W650. The W800 has an air-cooled, 773 cc paralleltwin, four-stroke engine, with sha and bevel gear driven overhead cam. The carbureor-fuelled W650 was disconnued and replaced by the W800 fuel injected electric-start engine.

The retro style includes a highly polished, gloss-painted and pinstriped fuel tank, as well as a ribbed saddle, wire wheels and a special W-logo on both sides of the tank, which refers to the W1-model.Besides the regular W800 model there is the W800 Special Edion with gold-anodised wheelrims, 2 black exhausts, and black engine. For both models, there is the Café Style opon, with a front cowl, and a cafe racer inspired seat.

REVIEW: ’12 BMW C650GT Scooter goes forward, no clutch or gears, with front and rear brakes operated from the handlebar, bicycle style. BMW always intended to give the C600 and C650 motorcycle levels of handling. The Sport has lighter, leaner bodywork with lower handlebars and a different seat, while the 650GT offers beer wind protecon and a more upright riding posion, for which you pay a lile more. The lights and indicators are also different. The Sport has sharper steering and is more willing to change direcon, but the GT is sll one of the best large scooters in the way it handles. Only Yamaha’s 2012 T-Max handles to this standard, a level at which you can really push the machine in corners and get some proper feedback and confidence, and enjoy the whole experience. The heavier-feeling GT was less comfortable as the lower spine support forced me to sit on a narrower part of the seat, and while the wind protecon is beer, I’d willingly sacrifice that for greater agility. Shorter riders won’t sit as far back so the difference will be reduced.
There’s no market sector safe from aack by BMW, it seems. The German company broke from tradion in spectacular style with the S1000RR superbike, which demonstrated that the Japanese are far from market dominance. Urban planners project that in fewer than 20 years, 60% of the world’s populaon will live in “megacies.” In the Fiies, only two metropolitan areas, Tokyo and New York, had 10 million-plus inhabitants. A lile more than a decade from now, the number of such cies is expected to be a dozen mes that, with eight of them boasng 20 million (or greater) residents. That’s a lot of traffic, a heaving ocean of twinkling taillights.
The engine and transmission work well together, not always a given with this kind of CVT drivetrain. On many scooters there’s a small delay between opening the throle and the drive being taken up, making low-speed riding awkward, but on the BMWs it’s immediate, smooth and predictable, and when you give it a handful the acceleraon is strong: 0-100km/h takes less than 6sec, which might be slow in two-wheeler terms but it keeps you well in front of most traffic.
BMW has a soluon: the Urban Mobility Vehicle.
Economy maers and while the engine no doubt is as classleadingly efficient as most other BMWs, the transmission means you’ll never achieve motorcycle levels. The onboard computer was suggesng anything from 20-24km/L, which isn’t bad in this class, and it means the range could be up to 300km, enough to think about touring as well as long commutes. The GT has a large windscreen that is electronically adjustable which adds a lile more comfort should you consider to get out of town.
Both the C600 and C650GT have the same engine and chassis, which means a 59bhp, parallel twin engine of 647cc, laid forward to lower the centre of gravity. I inserted the key, switched on the ignion, watched the needle for the analogue speedometer spin clockwise then counter-clockwise around the big dial and thumbed the starter buon. The engine sparked to life and seled into a low idle. I kicked up the side-stand (there’s also a centrestand), releasing the clever auto-deploying parking brake. I then rolled open the throle, planted my boots on the long, rubber-covered floorboards, and the connuously variable transmission with its no-maintenance-chain-inoil-bath final drive did the rest, shoong me smoothly into traffic. All very scooter-like but with a lot more punch from the engine bay.
Luggage capacity is average, with the GT just about taking two full face helmets beneath its seat, although less bulky ones. The Sport takes one while you’re riding but when you park the space can be extended on to the rear wheel, creang enough room for two. There are two small storage spaces in the fairing panel, but only the le one locks. The mirrors are well placed and provide good visibility to the rear, even for the big and wide rider.
A train of three gears takes the power via an enclosed chain to the rear wheel, a heavy and complex system which BMW admits is not the most efficient – it would prefer a dual clutch automac for greatest efficiency. Soon...
Where most people will moan, though, is at the price. The upside is that depreciaon is likely to be low. Priced at R121 495.00 - Incl. 14% VAT:
That might well change when BMW is established in the sector, but for now you get an enrely convenonal twistand-go arrangement: turn the throle and the scooter

IN THE NEWS Starng in Cape Town on the 7th June, Charley began his trip by abseiling off the sheer summit of Table Mountain, then travelled by motorbike across the enre country, from South to East, North to West, traversing the vast and varying landscape of South Africa. Experiencing the life of the bush tribesmen in the Kgalagadi Desert, Charley then came to grips with the majesc yet incredibly precarious Sani Pass, navigang the icy roads to reach the top.
From detonang dynamite deep-underground in a Barberton Gold Mine, cage diving with Great White Sharks in the rough Atlanc seas, uncovering the life and hope in the Cape Town townships, and searching the ocean floor for the perfect diamond in the ship wreck strewn East Coast, Charley’s African adventure will give the viewers an insight into the amazing characters, challenging adventures and majesc country that makes up the Republic of South Africa.
Charley also rode the spectacular Garden Route along the Southern Coast, and made his way through the thick Kruger flora, followed by flying a Parajet paramotor to get a completely different view of SA from the sky.

REVIEW: ‘12 Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX1200 The front fairing, windscreen and the half-fairing with integrated turn signals are all brand new elements that together, give the front-end of the Stelvio 8V a cungedge look. It has an original design, but it is above all more funconal and versale, qualies that are of the utmost importance in the Adventure Touring segment. The styling compared to the previous version: more efficient aerodynamic protecon, thanks to the new top fairing and praccally twice fold range capacity thanks to the outstanding new fuel tank with a 32 liter record capacity. The heart that beats inside this touring bike is the renowned V-shaped 90° transverse twin-cylinder “Four valve” engine, the highest performer among all the families of engines manufactured at Mandello del Lario, which has now reached exclusive levels as far as its technical/performance development is concerned.
The NTX is the greatest version of the Stelvio, and has all the great technical features of the basic version mixed in with some exceponal new features, including the sturdy “armor” that comprises the oil sump guard, engine guard, cylinder guard, full cover hand-guards, and the extra large windshield. Moreover, it also has extra wind deflectors to protect the rider and his bike against the hidden dangers throughout his trip. The top fairing and the half-fairing of the bike come with integrated turn indicators, features that add even more dynamic elements to the bike. The Stelvio 1200 NTX also comes with spacious aluminum panniers and addional halogen lights, creang ample space for long haul travels.
This latest version can boast the careful aenon paid to achieve a more silent and smooth running of the engine, whilst tweaking the electronic control, ming system and cooling system. The brand new integrated ignion and injecon ECU now exploits the signals sent by the two lambda probes to guarantee adequate feeding throughout the enre combuson cycle, improving response to the throle control, low-to-mid-range power delivery further to consumpons and emissions. The ECU also includes the ATC system to prevent sliding: this system controls ignion advance and injecon to cut torque delivery whenever a sudden loss of grip is detected so as to help the rider to remain in control under extreme, unexpected condions. The system can be deacvated, just like ABS.
As for the engine, the Stelvio 1200 NTX comes packed with a V-shaped 90° transverse twin-cylinder engine that produces a peak output of 105 horsepower and 113Nm of torque at just 5,800 rpm. Meanwhile, the frame on this 2012 Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 NTX ABS comes with a twin-spar design that’s made of high-strength steel and decorated with 2.5 mm thick direconal tubes that anchor the engine through six connecng points, giving the bike even more strength and rigidity than the standard lot.
These characteriscs emerge immediately once you are seated on the bike, where the percepon of carefully designed ergonomics can be felt straightaway: saddle, footrests and handlebar form a perfect triangle for all users. Moreover, for the perfeconists, there is sllroom for minor adjustments: windshield, seat height (820mm or 840mm), handlebar inclinaon, levers, pedals, as well as race-style adjusters for hydraulic compression/rebound damping. In a few seconds, everything is at the right place to face any challenge, from city traffic to the most inaccessible off-road paths. In moon, reduced vibraon and the efficient aerodynamic protecon offered by the new top fairing and windshield and original side wind deflectors ensure riding comfort for rider and passenger as well, ideal to tackle long trips.
Named aer the famous Alpine pass that connects Valtelline Valley to Vinschgau Valley with 84 amazing sbends between them, the Stelvio 1200 NTX brings together Guzzi character with state-of-the-art performance and design. The Stelvio has reached a new level thanks to the technical and funconal upgrades on the new Stelvio 1200 NTX. It all starts with design. The Guzzi design team has streamlined the Stelvio by rounding off the fuel tank and integrang it with the lightweight half-fairing. The new half-fairing improves wind protecon and flows seamlessly into the twin headlight assembly. The laer feature is a disncve element of the Stelvio design, and the only detail inherited from the previous version.
The NTX features more protecon for the motor and the rider alike. Aluminum crash bars protect the oil sump, engine, and cylinder heads. While hand-guards and the extra large windshield with addional wind deflectors offer more protecon and comfort for the rider. Connued on Page 30 ...

GOD’S CORNER: The only way to Heaven “I’m basically a good person, so I’ll go to heaven.” “OK, so I do some bad things, but I do more good things, so I’ll go to heaven.” “God won’t send me to hell just because I don’t live by the Bible. Times have changed!” “Only really bad people like child molesters and murderers go to hell.”
Jesus said: “You people are from your father the devil, and you want to do what your father desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I am telling you the truth, you do not believe me. Who among you can prove me guilty of any sin? If I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me? The one who belongs to God listens and responds to God’s words. You don’t listen and respond, because you don’t belong to God.” (John 8:44-47)
These are all common raonalizaons, but the truth is that they are all lies. Satan, the ruler of the world, plants these thoughts in our heads. He, and anyone who follows his ways, is an enemy of God (1Peter 5:8). Satan is a deceiver and oen disguises himself as someone good (2 Corinthians 11:14), but he has control over all the minds that do not belong to God (2 Corinthians 4:4).
When God created the world, it was perfect and good. Then he made Adam and Eve and gave them their own free will, so they would have a choice whether to follow and obey God. But they were tempted by Satan to disobey God, and they sinned. This separated them (and everyone that came aer them, including us) from being able to have a close relaonship with God. He is perfect and holy and must judge sin. As sinners, we couldn’t reconcile ourselves to God on our own. So God made a way that we could be united with Him in heaven. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 and John 17:3). “For the wages of sin is death, but the gi of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Jesus was born to die for our sins so that we would not have to. Three days aer His death, He rose from the grave (Romans 4:25), proving Himself victorious over death. He bridged the gap between God and man so that we may have a personal relaonship with Him if we only believe.
It is a lie to believe that God doesn’t care about small sins or that hell is reserved for “bad people.” All sin separates us from God, even a “lile white lie.” Everyone has sinned, and no one is good enough to get to heaven on his or her own (Romans 3:23). Geng into heaven is not based on whether our good outweighs our bad; we will all lose out if that is the case. (Romans 11:6). We can do nothing good to earn our way to heaven. Even if everyone else is living a life of sin in a culture where trusng in God is not popular, God will not excuse it. (Ephesians 2:1-2)

Most people believe in God, even Satan does. But to receive salvaon, we must turn to God, form a personal relaonship, turn away from our sins, and follow Him. We must trust in Jesus with everything we have and everything we do (Romans 3:22). The Bible teaches that there is no other way to salvaon than through Christ (John 14:6).

Jesus is the only way of salvaon because He is the only One who can pay our sin penalty (Romans 6:23). No other religion teaches the depth or seriousness of sin and its consequences. No other religion offers the infinite payment of sin that only Jesus Christ could provide. No other “religious founder” was God become man (John 1:1,14) – the only way an infinite debt could be paid. Jesus had to be God so that He could pay our debt. Jesus had to be man so He could die. Salvaon is available only through faith in Jesus Christ! “Salvaon is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

REVIEW: ‘12 Moto Guzzi Stelvio NTX1200 A bike dedicated to long haul travellers naturally needs luggage space, hence the spacious aluminium panniers and addional halogen lights.
many road motorcycles, since they are equipped for the unexpected and able to withstand any off-road driving strains.
Major improvements are also found in the controls, with a new dashboard including a 12V power outlet, a new fuse box compartment, dashboard and instrument panel with new rpm indicator graphics and a dash display with six-mark fuel indicator that integrates with onboard computer funcons such as average and current consumpon, average speed, trip me, maximum speed peak reached and diagnoscs. The display also lets you control handgrip heang and acvate the ATC system (tracon control system), fied as standard on both models.
The gearbox is a genuine six speed mechanical gem that excels for quietness, an easily selectable neutral posion and precision, thanks also to the quiet and smooth single plate clutch. During my me on this very able machine in and around Cato Ridge Table Mountain, Nagal Dam and with a passenger from KZN Tourism on the back, I could not fault this bike a single bit. It offered everything you are looking for in an Adventure Tourer; stability, comfort, protecon, power in all the right places room for luggage, big tank and all you’ll ever need on any trip you’d like to travel. Throle response is smooth and not as jerky as some of its competors; power delivery a breeze even when cruising in 6th gear.
The Stelvio 1200 NTX tackles a twisty mountain pass or a gravel strewn fire road with equal assurance. The secret is the new upper twin spar frame, made of high-strength steel, with 2.5mm thick direconal tubes, where the engine is anchored through six connecng points, two more than in usual frames, which give high rigidity to the assembly. When accelerang out of a corner, and the acon of the 105 horsepower generated by the new “Quarovalvole” engine is requested, or when braking, under the quick deceleraon generated by the three-disc Brembo braking system supported by the selectable Connental ABS, fied as standard on NTX. The Stelvio NTX sports 320mm double disc front brakes with a new holder flange, while retaining a 282mm brake disc at the rear. The wheels boast a cung-edge designed set of light alloy rims with a 150/70-17 rear tyre. Tubeless spoked wheels (patented Alpina STS system) come standard on the NTX. The Stelvio 1200 NTX boasts the latest evoluon of the “Quarovalvole” engine”, introduced in 2006 and universally acknowledged as the most advanced version of the V-shaped 90° transverse twin-cylinder. This highly sophiscated mechanical gem, which is unique in terms of both architecture and engineering clarity, is built using advanced componentry and technical soluons.
The Stelvio combines the opportunity to tour with adventurous riding capabilies. The praccality of the Stelvio is second to none, taking long exhausve journeys with ease whilst at the same me providing an enjoyable ride for short local journeys around town.
As far as the fuel system goes, the “Quarovalvole” engine premiers the new Marelli IWP 189 injectors located on the intake ducts of the sizeable 50mm throle bodies, whereas the brand new integrated ignion and injecon ECU now exploits the signals sent by the two lambda probes to guarantee adequate fuel metering throughout the enre combuson cycle, improving response to the throle control, mid range power delivery further to consumpons and emissions. In terms of electronic components, the new Stelvio 1200 NTX debuts the ATC system (tracon-control system) providing the rider with confidence in poor riding condions. But don’t be mislead by its luxury off-road appearance: the Stelvio 1200 NTX feature driving effecveness superior to the average of
A beer package you will not find, a true legend of magnificent engineering and technology on two wheels; asphalt or dirt she’s here to stay. Now a more broadly capable and versale motorcycle, the Stelvio NTX 1200 can look its compeon (and you know who you are) directly in the eye and say, “Let’s do this!” Priced at R165 995.00 - Incl. 14% VAT
