a word from the editor Greetings to everyone! Thanks again for all your emails an phone calls of encouragement and suggestions as to the future of Bike Talk. I am glad to announce that we’ve increased the print quantity and distribution making it possible for you to grab a copy of Bike Talk at almost every SPAR in and around Durban. If you get to a SPAR and don’t find it there, give us a call. On a sad note, my sincere condolences to the family of “Ballie” or Roy from the Monarchs MC, may God grant you the strength you need to deal with this great loss. In this issue you’ll find some great articles about the Quad Shoot-out and new interesting advertisers who graced our pages this month. PLEASE, boys and girls, I need your events for the Calendar and articles for the Run-Feedback section. We’ve had some pictures sent in for the Pic of the Month, but none were GOOD enough ... sorry. NEW pages, Letter to the Editor and Memorial Page, need to be added and I encourage all of you to start sending me the related letters via email or fax. Feel free to send us anything that you might think would contribute to the success of Bike Talk and benefit other bikers and readers, who knows we may just publish it. I again ask all of you, including the new readers or “wanna-be” biker to support the advertisers, they make Bike Talk possible and we need them as much as they need us, so let’s work together on this? Here’s to this issue and many more to come ... THANK YOU!!

keeping it up

by Hein Jonker

Riding a Motorcycle Safely • Remember that motorists often have trouble seeing motorcycles and reacting in time. • Make sure your headlight works and is on day and night. • Use reflective strips or decals on your clothing and on your motorcycle. • Be aware of the blind spots cars and trucks have. • Flash your brake light when you are slowing down and before stopping. • If a motorist doesn’t see you, don’t be afraid to use your horn. Dress for safety: • Wear a quality helmet and eye protection. • Wear bright clothing and a light-colored helmet. • Wear leather or other thick, protective clothing. • Choose long sleeves and pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves. • Remember – the only thing between you and the road is your protective gear. Apply effective mental strategies: • Constantly search the road for changing conditions. • Give yourself space and time to respond to other motorists’ actions. • Give other motorists time and space to respond to you. • Use lane positioning to be seen; ride in the part of a lane where you are most visible. • Watch for turning vehicles. • Signal your next move in advance. • Avoid weaving between lanes. • Pretend you’re invisible, and ride extra defensively. • Don’t ride when you are tired or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. • Know and follow the rules of the road. • Stick to the speed limit. Know your bike and how to use it: • Get formal training and take refresher courses. • Practice. Develop your riding techniques before going into heavy traffic. Know how to handle your bike in conditions such as wet or sandy roads, high winds, and uneven surfaces. Remember: Give yourself space. People driving cars often just don’t see motorcycles. Even when drivers do see you, chances are they’ve never been on a motorcycle and can’t properly judge your speed.

IN THE NEWS

In April of 2006 the Kloof area became host to much more than just a place to buy a motorcycle. The birth of Harley-Davidson 1000-Hills was the opening of a clubhouse, a meeting point for breakfast runs, a coffeehouse, and a clothing and accessories shop with a selection offering the ability to personalize your very own Hog with more customizations than an episode of “Pimp my ride”! So let me introduce you to the team. First faces behind the counter are Kerry’s and Nina’s, both involved in merchandising, Kerry is also involved with HOG (Harley Owners Group). Then there’s John Lewis in parts and accessories, Frank Wadsworts with spares, Andy Paulsen as chief techie, and Heike Cloete covers admin. The general manager is Chris Bretter, and the owner is Rob Saunders; both really approachable and friendly, in fact they all are, well done on creating a cool environment for fellow bikers. So now you know them all, sjoe… - Pics by Bike Talk

DUCATICAFE – Durban was buzzing with energy and anticipation on the 11th August at the unveiling of the new DUCATI Monster 695. But it was not the sound of bikes, but a red-hot revving Ferrari to turn up the thrill factor a notch. This whole Italian lifestyle thing is addictive, or maybe it’s the coffee. The new Desmo L-Twin 695cc offers 73hp at the smoothest delivery to date. With it came the launch of a first in SA – 2 year unlimited mileage service plan for every new bike purchased between 7 August and 14 November. Well done to Philippe and the team, an excellent presentation of the bike and a truly exciting launch. - Pics by Bike Talk

The boys at Alfie Cox Racing in Pinetown have recently completed their new adventure room focused on supermotards, adventures, and, of course, the mighty Surperduke. The lifestyle centre is also home to clothing, protective gear and accessories for the dual-sport market. Go check it out… also, take a look at the KTM Superduke review on page 16 - Pics by Bike Talk

Tommy Johns launched the latest BMW boxer with track potential on the 12th August. The celebration of which took place at Buds on the Bay. The dramatic love/hate styling is up to you, but certainly the R1200S is one of the trickest bikes in the Bee Em line-up. The 5-course meal was top-class, thanks to Kathy for the invite and Bill for the fantastic food. To those of you who weren’t there, just for future reference - Tommy John’s launches are not to be missed - Pics by Bike Talk

What a great day for the Lord and for CMA for launching yet another chapter, this time in Greytown. Leon said that, irrespective of the bad weather with the trip up from Durban, it was still attended above his expectations. Good food, good people and good luck to you and your wife Leon with your ministry in that area. Pics by Bike Talk

REVIEW - SUZUKI GSX-R750 REVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRIS This review is possible thanks to Gary from Grant Umpleby Suzuki. What a terrific bike for our first review with Umpleby Suzuki, may there be many more! FIRST IMPRESSION This bike is hot, no doubt in my mind – this is one of the most visually appealing superbikes available! Fairing design is aggressive and racy, and the mass centralised exhaust system leaves the tail end suspended high and uncluttered off the back tyre. Get it off the side-stand and you can be forgiven for having a quick look at the decals to make sure you’re not on a 600. Amazingly, this bike weighs in at a mere 163kg, just 2 kilos more than the GSX-R 600! CONTROLS AND GADGETS The trick white-faced tachometer has a small screen on the right-hand side to indicate gear selection; a feature I feel all new bikes should posses. The speedo is digital, well positioned, and easily read in one hasty glance. This is definitely my favourite instrument cluster of any Jap superbike I’ve tested to date, due to both aesthetics and usability. PERFORMANCE An easy to remove number-plate holder gives a clue as to this bike’s purpose, but swing your leg up-n-over and it becomes painfully obvious; there are no pretensions here, the high pegs and low handlebars force you into a full-crouch position which in turn sends three short messages to your brain…race, race, RACE! And cripes, did it go! A fair amount of shifting takes place for this bike to perform at its best, but find that perfect gear and out of corner acceleration becomes phenomenal! A computer precisely regulates the fuel injection requested from throttle input, delivering a smooth power response throughout the rev range. The standard exhaust sounds fantastic, and what an electrifying wail at high rpm’s! The gearbox is smooth and never missed, each change acknowledged with a quietly confident “thunk”, very nice indeed! SUSPENSION & HANDLING The steering damper is fairly hidden from view, but its effects are obvious: the front-end was utterly composed at all times; I never once felt a hint of a head-shake. This wasn’t a case of gunning halfway through the corner, hitting some rough ground and thinking, “Oh Crumbs! What’s the front end gonna do now?!” No, the question never entered my mind; I gave it a couple corners to prove itself and from then on it was immediate and complete confidence. Rider feedback was a nigh-on-perfect marriage of control and excitement. Place it somewhere between the super-sensitive Ninja and the self-confident Blade. No complaints about the brakes: stoppies are a breeze with this much braking power and a super light tail-end. Being blessed with a slipper clutch made gearing down for corners a low risk and exact affair. Low seating position settles one into (as opposed to on top of) the bike which ads to rider confidence due to a feel of oneness of man and machine. OVERALL RATING Not a commuter or “good-all-rounder.” This bike was designed for one thing only: riding hard and fast. And at that it is VERY good. Your friends will be envious, policemen and cars will hate you, and your wrists will hurt, want one? I do! PRICE At an unbelievable R86,000.00 Suzuki have placed the GSX-R 750 squarely into the 600cc price bracket, and given you an extra 15kw to boot!

REVIEW - KTM SUPERDUKE 990 REVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRIS Alfie Cox is the real deal; he is a legend in the off-road racing world, two wheels and four; so he knows his stuff. He’s completely approachable and one of the coolest guys around, a good example for fans and competitors alike. So thanks Alfie – for your time and for the opportunity to test-ride the astounding Superduke. FIRST IMPRESSION Riders of the 990 will certainly turn heads; its dramatic looks demand it! The orange color scheme is oh so KTM, and although this model comes in black and titanium as well, the pumpkin-orange theme is present on all three. The 1438mm wheelbase appears short, almost Buell-like in its aggressive stance. Even resting on the kickstand the “don’t mess with me” warning is loud and clear. The splendid little scoop-fairing for the pipes adds to the aggressiveness and finishes things off nicely, however it does limit ground clearance so take it easy when ramping curbs. Radiator shrouds are designed to force more air through the radiator and engine keeping things cool, but beyond the practical – they assist in making the look exciting and different. Mirrors suit the overall package just right with their innovative design. The twin under-seat brushed stainless-steel silencers look mean, their shining chrome covers adding that extra touch of class. CONTROLS AND GADGETS The clutch and front brake levers can be adjusted closer to or further away from the handlebars, to suit varying riding styles. The practical colour coordinated clocks look neat and tell all the necessary info. PERFORMANCE This is KTM’s first real attempt into the fiercely contended world of open-class naked street bikes. To say they came out gun’s blazing may be an understatement; the KTM 990 packs one heck of a punch! This is quite possibly the most aggressive thing on two wheels! Acceleration ranges from phenomenal to outright frightening, and is so brutal I actually had to come off the power many times because I literally couldn’t hold on any longer. This beast is either on or off. Give a little throttle and surge forward, tap off and, “Who put on the airbrakes?” There just doesn’t seem to be an in-between. SUSPENSION, BRAKES & HANDLING Brakes are top class Brembo’s, front and back, but up-front is where it gets interesting. The 320mm double discs are clamped by 4-piston fixed-calipers with 4 individual pads per disc, all pads easily checked and changed without having to remove the front rim, what a treat! COMFORT Tall 855mm seat height and comfortably low front pegs will suit the taller rider. The pillion position is not quite so roomy. I found myself perched there for a couple minutes and it was an identical feel to most superbikes; not sure if I was seated on the cushion or the taillight, and let’s not discuss the rear peg elevation – the Superduke is definitely suited for the soloist. Dirt specialists will feel at home as soon as hands find rest on the motocross style Renthal handlebars. For us on-roaders, the tapered aluminum bars feel a little awkward at first, especially at low speeds, but after an hour or so they begin to really fit in with the 990’s personality. OVERALL RATING Looking for something a little more exclusive that will stand out from the rest? If you’ve got a decent bit of biking know-how and are in search of more excitement and thrills than the average man can handle, this KTM will surely keep you on your toes! PRICE R99,000.00 incl. VAT

a word

by Hein Jonker

Our Father Is Faithful to Deliver Called by God to full-time Christian service, the man resigned a lucrative job, left a specialized career of 20 years, and took his family over 2,000 miles to a strange city to enter seminary. He was able to obtain only part-time employment in his profession and his annual salary was barely one-third of what he had earned before God called him. The costs of being in seminary and of keeping his two children in Christian elementary school became heavier and heavier. When things got too tight he stayed out a semester, but his children went to school. Finally, his wife, who had not worked since the first child was born, took a full-time job. All the while the man’s prayer was to share with God his heart’s desire that he be given work in Christian service that would make ends meet while he went to school and served his Lord Jesus Christ. Though he enjoyed many opportunities to preach and to minister without pay, full-time Christian work eluded him. He began to seek full-time employment at secular jobs, but he knew in his heart if he landed one that probably would be the end of seminary. One day a series of unpredictable circumstances arose whereby in less than two weeks, without any effort on his part, the man was in a full-time job utilizing his specific talents, in full-time Christian service, and with an employer that insisted that he continue in seminary. God faithfully prepares hearts in times of trial and temptation. And when His time is right, He delivers.

REVIEW - buell ulysses xb12x REVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRIS Matthew, Max and Riaan from Harley-Davidson Durban have been my first introduction to Buell and the lifestyle surrounding it; you guys make outsiders feel welcomed, thanks. FIRST IMPRESSION This big Buell really appealed to me; the thick, flowing frame and gorgeous rims look so different than anything else out there. The tyre-hugging front and rear mudguards are really well constructed and add much to the overall allurement. Just seeing the big 1200cc V-twin bouncing around on its rubber engine-mounts as the power-plant warmed up got me excited, here goes my first ride on some real American muscle! PERFORMANCE I must admit this was nothing like I expected. The performance is not eye-popping or intense - demanding excessive rider input; it is relaxed and comfortable, almost lazy and hardly any rider input is required. The first thing I noticed as I began my journey was my lack of concentrated focus on the Buell, usually a bike will take a while to get used to, but the Ulysses just seems to know what you want to do and does it without hesitation, allowing your mind to focus on your surroundings and experience the thrill of the open road. The big V has buckets of torque low down offering real-world fun without the need to exceed. It is a dream to wheelie – roll on the power and up it comes, smooth, solid, and absolutely delicious! HANDLING On every Buell you will find three similar design principles: Mass Centralization (keeping the weight as centred as possible), Chassis Rigidity, and Low Unsprung Weight (keeping the weight of components not supported by springs or shocks, as light as possible). These three principles, called the “Trilogy of Tech”, were developed to enhance the ride and are found on every Buell. Mass Centralization– the signature underbelly exhaust system and the placement of the rear shock are the most obvious contributors. This is also why oil is found in the swingarm and petrol in the frame (which holds almost 17lts). Chassis Rigidity – a highly rigid aluminium wrap-around frame and short wheelbase keep wheels aligned avoiding unwanted corner flex. Low Unsprung Weight – enormous front single disc is mounted on the rim rather than the spindle. When the brake is applied it transfers braking forces directly to the rim instead of through the spokes. Without the need for load-bearing spokes or even a second disc, the bike’s front end weighs in about 2 ½ kgs lighter than what you’d find on most dual disc set-ups. Combine these three principles and things just start to make sense. Superb road-holding and handling that allows you to enjoy cornering at any speed, and I don’t just mean carving at hyper speed, tight knee-down first and second gear bends put a grin on my face every time! Endos are unbelievably effortless and super smooth; braking is powerful, yet without the harsh bite associated with other effective braking systems. I think this is due firstly to the braking force up front, which is sent directly to the tyre through the rim instead of through the spindle and spokes, and secondly to the lightness of its tail. So lacking was the biting sensation that I was beginning to regard the front brake as spongy – until I noticed the rear tyre hovering half a metre off the ground! SUSPENSION & COMFORT A refreshingly rider focused position suited the overall feel of the Ulysses perfectly. I felt relaxed in the comfortable upright position, hands up quite high on the tall, wide handlebars. Seat height at a tiptoed 84cm initiates mental confidence to tackle any obstacle in its path, or perhaps off the path just a little. The Ulysses enjoys a bit of off-road and the fully adjustable Showa’s do a fantastic job soaking up all the bumps. “B” grade roads (potholes with the odd bit of tar in between) can be ventured safely and with confidence. Pillion position is well catered for with low pegs, sturdy grab rails and a supportive backrest. Talking of the backrest – this neat little thing can be easily moved into three different positions: upright for the pillion’s comfort, dropped backwards to be used as a luggage rack when trekking 2-up, or dropped forward to negate wind resistance when travelling alone. OVERALL RATING The ride is the all-important focus in the design of every Buell, and it works! What an enjoyable bike to ride! In Eric Buell’s own words, “Because in the end it’s not how quickly you get there. Its how much fun you have on the way.” PRICE R102 000.00 incl. VAT

run feedback

This was one of the best “Day of the Clubs” I’ve been to in years. Cliffy’s in PMB presented a good venue allowing everyone to interact and spend some time together. We had new faces as well as the very familiar faces like the one above ... does anyone know this guy, just joking. Thank you Craig from Chicken Outfit, let this be a day to use as a guide to build from and make it even better next year with more activities for all - Pics by Bike Talk

Just a few pics taken at CMA’s annual Faith Rally. We, well yes I’m a CMA Member, had great fellowship with each other and with our Creator. Next year is the 21st Birthday of this Faith Rally and CMA would like to extend and invitation to all interested to join us on this life transforming event. Welldone to Rui and his team for once gain putting together a great weekend - Pics by Bike Talk

quad shoot-out

Track Times and Perspectives/Opinions by Clint Visagie and William Morris Thanks to all who played a part in making Bike Talk’s first shootout possible. To the dealers: Lawrence Henning from Honda Wing Umhlanga, John Champion from Dacar, and Vernon and Mark Perry from Perry Yamaha, thanks a lot for the use of your quads. Thanks to Dave Marshall from B&Q trailers for the use of the double quad trailer for the day, and also Gerry from High Stakes race track in Cato Ridge for allowing us free reign to the perfect set up for this test. - Pics by Bike Talk

HONDA TRX 450 Course 1: rough dirt, straight Average time: 3.96 seconds Course 2: 2x course 1 distance, rough dirt, slight righthander, small whoops section Average time: 9.46 seconds Course 3: 3 laps around oval track, rough dirt and grass, two sharp right-handers, long table-top jump Time: 1 min 26.6 seconds Average lap: 28.87 seconds The ferocious growling and barking out of pipe gives a fair warning of the truly aggressive nature of this quad. The low down torque was astounding; it certainly felt like the best bottom-end of the three. It’s super punchy power delivery was addictive, and felt quite similar to Honda’s motocross CRF 250 we tested in the 4th edition. It did seem to run out of revs quickly though; a weaker top meant that quickest times were achieved with rapid changes though the gears rather than running it all the way to the red. The TRX feels light and easy to handle, launch-ramps were also a point of excellence. Brakes worked great, no complaints there. The stiff suspension let you know about every ridge and rut in the track, but a comfortable riding position with plenty of extra space kept its riders happy. A feeling of top-heaviness caused cornering to become a weaker point; flying around the bend on two left tires is not only the scariest way to make the bend, it’s also the slowest. Widening the axels should solve this issue easily enough. Plastics have nice curves and shape; the overall package is uncluttered and appealing. Wheels arches not only look good, but also seem to offer the greatest protection for the rider from getting slung with mud and muck.

POLARIS OUTLAW 500 Course 1: rough dirt, straight Average time: 4.03 seconds Course 2: 2x course 1 distance, rough dirt, slight righthander, small whoops section Average time: 9.13 seconds Course 3: 3 laps around oval track, rough dirt and grass, two sharp right-handers, long table-top jump Time: 1 min 26.8 seconds Average lap: 28.93 seconds The Japanese brands have decided to play it safe with styling that whilst being distinctive, is largely unadventurous. The American based Polaris, on the other hand, has taken a bold and rather daring approach in the art room. The Outlaw looks downright scary, two evil eyes stare from behind the voodoo mask. The independent suspension and the unusual placement of the exhaust (centered just under the seat) make for a visually busy rear-end. This quad is very comfortable; wide natural feeling handlebars, loads of room to adjust riding position, a thick and soft seat cushion, and the Fox suspension that soaks up all the little bumps, and makes life a bit more pleasant coming down off big ones, combine to make the Polaris the comfiest ride you’ll find on a race focused quad. So much comfort, in fact, that it seems to not be as violently quick as the two 450’s, but the stats prove otherwise with times right up there with the competition. It’s just less strenuous to cover a track with the Outlaw. Rear brakes are very direct, a lack of range on the foot lever meant wheels were either fully locked or not slowed at all. Corners are the 500’s strong point: the independent rear suspension offers loads of grip around bends, the excellent traction a product of each tire finding ground regardless of the elevation of the others. Power really comes on higher up in the rev range. We found the bottom-end and mid-range to be its point of weakness. Compared to the 450’s, it gets a little left behind on take off, and then makes it back up on the straights. Keep the revs screaming and the Polaris is deadly quick.

YAMAHA YZF 450 Course 1: rough dirt, straight Average time: 3.83 seconds Course 2: 2x course 1 distance, rough dirt, slight righthander, small whoops section Average time: 9.0 seconds Course 3: 3 laps around oval track, rough dirt and grass, two sharp right-handers, long table-top jump Time: 1 min 24.0 seconds Average lap: 28.0 seconds The physically smallest quad of the three, the Yamaha makes the rider feel more in control. It’s easy to manhandle around bends, and to ride faster and more forcefully from the first time around the track. Tight dimensions give the impression of being on a motocross bike in terms of flickability. The smooth power delivery offers constant energy to the back wheels throughout the range; low-down, mid and high all felt vigorous, but it was the top that felt most exciting and it just keeps on revving – we couldn’t find the limit! It revs quick and throttle response is immediate. The Yamaha felt the fastest quad on the track, and the recorded times agreed. The suspension is race focused, so if this quad is doubling for some weekend fun it can feel a bit stiff and bumpy. Rider space is also a little cramped. Brakes get the job done without any issues. Styling matches personality – it looks fast, light and aggressive, whilst creating the disconcerting sensation it is about to pounce on you! As far as looks go, the Yamaha wins this beauty pageant!

CONCLUSION For the novice the Polaris would be an excellent choice for ease of use and comfort. The Polaris will also suit the more mature rider who wants all the performance without having to put up with an aching back and rear-end after the fun is over. For the fastest and most agile quad stock standard – the ultra speedy Yamaha fits the bill best. My personal favorite? The big TRX for grunty muscle power and sensational fun!

HELMETS

”A Touchy Subject”

(Written by John Briscoe of Gear Up)

After all how much is your head worth? Or are you Mr “never happen to me” hero who assumes a fatalistic perspective to life? Yeah sure I agree, it does depend on what we hit or miss as to our final safety, but surely you should make every effort to maximise your chances? Too many of us riders think we are impervious to that one instance that could make a difference to our lives. The difference between being dead or alive, or between living in a wheel chair versus walking – it’s just not worth taking a chance – your helmet could make the difference! So 16 km per hour (as per a medical practioner) is enough to kill you without a helmet on. So a big loose fitting version is almost as bad! Your helmet should be snug almost too tight without giving you a headache. Don’t confuse this with an oversize helmet that pushes up onto your forehead and gives you a headache as a result of this pressure purely on your forehead. The helmet must be snug all round so when you shake your head ( like when a dog comes out of water) the helmet moves with your head. Check for the E standard or SABS mark. This is becoming compulsory shortly and although us importers and retailers will have a chance to phase out the old standard DOT etc. The well-known brands imported by the big guys are the ones to stick to. Then its up to you in terms of make. There are two main streams of thinking – traditional extremely hard exterior and soft inner versus the crumple zone technology. There is no evidence to say which is better than the other. Choose that which gives you the comfort for your shaped head. Remember to look for little features like the chin cover that helps prevent noise. Remember flip up helmets will be noisier than fixed versions because the air gets in through the join. Try and avoid open face helmets. A leading manufacturer studied accidents over a period of time and determined that 48% of all head injuries took place in the lower front half of the head! Most international manufacturers also suggest you change your helmet every five years and whenever its had a knock – no matter how minor! Do you choose matt versus gloss – its up to you – whatever blows your hair back! Tip: when cleaning your helmet please don’t use a solvent! Baby shampoo is more than adequate. Finally make sure you really enjoy your helmet! It makes it so much easier to go riding if its aesthetics, comfort and perceived safety are all in alignment!
