Folding Bikes

Frame geometry Dear reader, We started out in cycle manufacturing in 1995 with the Birdy full suspension folding bike, and, just as it was then, this cult bike is still our most important model, and it is sold in many countries worldwide. The trick of using the pivot points for both suspension and folding was and is ingenious, and it allows us to avoid the major weak point of previous folding bikes (and also many current ones, too!): the folding hinge in the main frame. This makes the Birdy extremely rigid and, along with the full suspension, it delivers a very fun ride with excellent safety and comfort.

2

In this catalogue we will present our complete folding bike range. From this model year the Birdy is joined once again by the Frog; this bike was unavailable in recent years. Now it is back following a full redesign and with a fresh new look: it’s just waiting for you to turn it into a prince! The potential is certainly there, we can assure you.

The Birdy range has also been revised and improved. Last year we produced a first small batch of Birdys with disc brakes, and this sparked a huge response. No wonder, because the excellent controllability and high braking efficiency of disc brakes make them a ‘must’ for many riders of high end bikes. So this year we are proud to present a completely new model with disc brakes, the Birdy alfine disc. The combination of a high quality hub gear transmission and superb brakes makes for a wonderful folding bike for a great variety of applications. The Birdy speed and the Birdy rohloff are also available with optional disc brakes.

8 The Birdy is the iconic product in the riese und mßller range. Once you’ve taken your first ride on a Birdy you wouldn’t ever want to settle for anything else. This bike is certainly no token or second bike; in riding pleasure and comfort it more than holds its own against its full-size siblings. It is a bike with full-size quality. The Birdy has a monocoque main frame formed from two

sheet-aluminium halves, precisely welded together by a robot, at its heart. This production technology gives a completely fresh look with flowing free-form lines and a bodyworkstyle appearance. The main frame and rear suspension arm are a full 150 g lighter than the classic Birdy and at the same time more rigid. The step-through height has also been reduced by 60 mm. Folding bikes

are intended for mobile people, who sometimes also need to carry their vehicle, so low weight makes even more sense here than on any other type of cycle. A particular feature of the Birdy is the dual functionality of the frame joints, both for suspension pivots and as part of the folding mechanism. This trick of using the frame joints both for folding and suspension means that a joint in

the main frame can be eliminated. With its simple folding mechanism (folds in about 15 seconds), small folded size (from 79 x 61 x 36 cm) and low weight (from 10.3 kg) it is easy to transport and can be stored in any space small or large.

The Birdy is now well established as the leading folding bike on the market and is distributed in America, Australia and Japan, so that a worldwide service network is on hand even when you’re on the road. Each of the eleven versions has a different emphasis.

Numerous accessories also enable you 9 to adapt the Birdy to your specific requirements. You can choose from five colours. The Birdys with disc brakes (standard on the Birdy alfine disc, optional on the Birdy speed and rohloff) come with a special frame, available in either black or polished aluminium. 1 not for Birdys with disc brake 2 only for Birdys with disc brake

Birdy speed/pink with sport stem, optional plug-in pedals and Big Apple tires

10 The Birdy rohloff uses the Rohloff 14-speed hub gear with its impressive wide overall gear range and very even and finely-spaced steps between the gears. This fully-enclosed gear system is almost maintenance-free and guarantees a long service life even under extreme conditions. With its high-end specification the Birdy rohloff is the Birdy to fall in love with.

The Birdy rohloff disc with disc brakes offers the very highest levels of stopping power and control, making it superbly equipped even for touring in the mountains or for adverse weather conditions. The special frame is available either in black or in polished aluminium. The Birdy for perfectionists.

The Birdy touring comes with the 24-speed SRAM Dual Drive transmission which combines the advantages of both hub and derailleur gears, providing a particularly wide range of ratios. Whether it’s climbing steeply up or racing downhill, the Birdy touring is the Birdy for maximum versatility.

Light, lighter, Birdy speed. With lightweight components derived from road and mountain bike racing, the Birdy speed sets the benchmark when it comes to lightweight folding bikes. Lightweight folding tires, ultralight Big Foot cranks from Tune and Shimano Ultegra 9-speed transmission with special ‘faster’ gear ratios make the Birdy speed into a potential world record breaker. Just 10.3 kg.

The Birdy speed disc with disc brakes is a fast bike, but also one which can be stopped quickly and precisely. The excellent modulation of these brakes ensures that you can keep any situation under control. The special frame is available either in black or in polished aluminium. If you’re looking for a lightweight and technically high-end bike, you can’t let this Birdy pass you by.

12 The Birdy city benefits from practically wearfree 8-speed hub gearing and an almost maintenance-free back-pedal brake. Even after years of use it just keeps on working effortlessly. The Birdy city premium is equipped with the high-end Shimano Nexus Premium hub. This hub runs with even lower friction thanks to upgraded bearings, and is also lighter.

The Birdy alfine disc is equipped with a chic and very high quality 8-speed hub gear transmission system using the Shimano Alfine groupset. The disc brakes provide superb stopping and offer excellent controllability. The special frame is available either in black or in polished aluminium. Top performance and elegant appearance combine to great effect in this model.

The Birdy light embodies all of the usual Birdy virtues. With its reliable Shimano 8-speed derailleur transmission and powerful V-brakes it is super lightweight and tremendous fun to ride. The Birdy light is the Birdy to jump on and go riding!

The Birdy europe also employs 8-speed Shimano derailleur transmission and excellent V-brakes. With its superb priceperformance ratio this is the entry-level model for folding bike fans across Europe (not available in Germany).

With the Birdy hybrid the rider is assisted via an electric motor in the rear wheel. The battery pack is fitted in a small, removable handlebar bag. With an overall weight of 18 kg the Birdy hybrid is one of the lightest electrically-assisted bikes on the market. An 8-speed derailleur transmission provides problem-free gear changes. Folding is unaffected by the electric assist system.

16 The Frog is back! After going AWOL for a few years the new Frog is checking back in with up to the minute technology and an astonishingly good ride. It is based around a monocoque main frame manufactured from two sheet aluminium halves, accurately robot-welded. This fully-suspended compact folding bike is designed for everyone who needs a bike along constantly: in cars, trains

or boats the Frog vanishes into even the tiniest spaces, and for local public transport the small packed size won’t even raise an eyebrow. As a constant companion it is always on hand and invites spontaneous use. The Frog is most at home when you unfold it and nip along through the city or the countryside. With the 8-speed hub gearing, spirited riding is possible even in hilly

terrain. The full suspension and wide tires with grippy tread swallow up bumps superbly; the ride feels almost like you’re on a ‘big’ touring bike.

Frog/magenta with optional mudguards, carrier and kickstand

The Frog has the same folding system as the Birdy, and with the telescopic seatpost, the compact wheels now enlarged to 16, and folding pedals, it achieves an astonishing folded size of 73 x 59 x 26 cm. This gives it a 28 % smaller folded volume than that of its sister model the Birdy. Folding takes around 20 seconds.

The new Frog will be supplied from December 2009.

Technology in detail.

Riding a folding bike is a way of life; a folding bike enhances your personal mobility. In the last few pages we have tried to highlight the enhanced quality of life you can enjoy every day when using the Birdy or Frog. But the basis for all of this is the bicycle; its design, its quality and its technology. It is well worth examining any folding bike in detail, and comparing its technical qualities critically against your own needs. For this you need detailed information, which we will provide for you in the pages which follow. Should you still have questions, don’t hesitate to contact your specialist dealer. He or she is a highly competent person to consult and is the first point of contact for advice and a test ride. riese und müller 20 dealers are kept regularly updated and trained by us. They are among the very best cycle shops around, and always endeavour to offer you the very best service. You can find contact details for all of our dealers on the website: www.r-m.de

Ride suspended – arrive relaxed. riese und müller develops and produces only fully suspended bikes. Our objective is to create the most comfortable, safe and healthenhancing products possible. Alongside the satisfaction of precision engineering and design comes a passion for detail based on scientific principles, of course a passion for riding bikes. Riding suspended brings three main advantages:

unsuspended

Ride comfort: improved riding comfort is the directly obvious effect of full suspension. Vibrations (e.g. cobbles) and heavier shocks (kerbs, tree roots) are considerably reduced, making riding more fun. This improved riding comfort is only achieved through true full suspension with adequate travel. Experiments at the University of Hamburg-Harburg have shown that riding a bike over cobbles generates damaging levels of vibration, but that these are significantly reduced by full suspension. It is important to note that a suspended seatpost, for example, offers nowhere near the comfort levels of a full swing-arm rear wheel suspension system.

Full suspension: more fun and comfort considerably reduced damaging vibration

unsuspended

Full suspension: more safety and dynamic riding better roadholding via suspended chassis

Health: Full suspension reduces static stress on the muscles. The whole body is under less load, and so is noticeably more relaxed. Performance is increased accordingly.

Safety: only on a bike with true full suspension do the wheels retain full contact with the ground even over poor roads, making it definitely safer to ride. An unsuspended bike or a bike with, for example, a suspended seatpost, is more likely to bounce and so to lose safe road contact. With full suspension the bike will remain under full control even in awkward situations such as on wet cobbles.

Finally both riding comfort and ride safety both contribute towards making the bike simply more fun to ride. riese und m端ller bikes are appreciated by fans of technology, athletes, everyday cyclists and leisure riders alike.

1. Higher tire pressure thanks to full suspension easier rolling wheel size not relevant for rolling resistance Wheel size With the introduction of full suspension for bicycles, the ‘working conditions’ for bicycle wheels changed significantly. On an unsuspended bike the wheels had to both have low rolling resistance and also to provide adequate comfort, in other words to roll easily over edges and bumps. This was most easily achieved using a large wheel. Higher tire pressure, which gives 22 lower rolling resistance, also results in reduced riding comfort – an intractable dilemma! With full suspension it is very different: now comfort and rolling resistance are largely independent. Suspension forks and rear swing-arm systems absorb shocks and take care of ride comfort. Meanwhile the wheels can be optimised for low rolling resistance and strength.

2. Appropriate gearing easy pedalling

1. Higher tire pressure thanks to full suspension Easy running generally means low rolling resistance, which is most significantly influenced by tire pressure and profile. Wheel size has only a very small influence. Even the 16” wheels of a folding bike will, with the same tire pressure and profile, roll almost precisely as easily as a 28” wheel. 2. Appropriate gearing The transmissions on the Birdy and Frog are designed so that you can pedal just as easily and at the same speed as you do on any conventional 28”-wheeled bike.

3. Compact wheels strong, light, fast

3. Compact wheels A compact 16 or 18 inch wheel is lighter, stronger and accelerates quicker than a 28” wheel. This contributes to the low overall weight of both the Frog and the Birdy. So the small wheels of these folding bikes have nothing but advantages for you!

Product safety

We are confident in the quality of our cycles, and independent tests back this up. Before production begins every frame design is tested and optimised many times for longterm durability. But that isn’t enough for us. We also have regular production machines tested regularly by an independent testing laboratory. After all, your safety is at stake. To provide results in an acceptable timescale the tests are not carried out one by one, but are simulated as a so-called ‘collective load regime’ on a test stand. So that these tests can deliver reliable results for product safety it is important that the tests are both relevant to real world use and repeatable. Only in this way can improvements in the design be implemented and measured. This is essent ial for our mission of continuous product improvement. Our frames are tested by the EFBe testing institute, because the testing scenarios offered by the EFBe match our product safety requirements, as described above. This

institute offers scientifically conducted testing with very high repeatability. The testing divides between a test simulating pedalling out of the saddle and a simulation of the loads on the saddle. The out-of-the-saddle pedalling test is to DIN 79100, but with considerably higher requirements. We have our folding bikes (Birdy and Frog) tested in the Road Bike category. Both models withstand the maximum test loads in the road bike category in both the out-of-the-saddle pedalling test and the saddle load test. The precise proof loads for each model and the relevant testing logos and certificates awarded can be found on our website at: www.r-m.de You can find further details online at: www.efbe.de

Guarantee

Made in Germany

The legal warranty period for your bike extends to two years against material defects. Certain components are however subject to wear under normal use and once they reach their wear limit, they must be replaced. Among these are for example chain, gear and brake cables, rubber grips, chainrings and sprockets, tires, saddle covering, brake blocks, rims and lighting units (bulbs, diodes). These wearing parts are not covered by the material defects warranty.

Our mission is perfection on two wheels. And we work to achieve it. Every bicycle from riese und müller is developed, tested and finally carefully assembled by hand in our factory in Darmstadt. Our cycle mechanics have many years of experience in the assembly of our full suspension bikes.

Independent of the legally required material defects guarantee we also provide you a 25 year guarantee against the breakage of frame and rear swingarm (for hybrid models five years). You can find the precise details of the extent of, and conditions for, this extended guarantee in the user manual and any supplements. Naturally we are at your service at any time should you not be satisfied with the quality of our products, and along with your 24 cycle dealer we will find a solution. Your partner in contract remains your dealer who sold you the bike. Only he or she can help you directly and provide definitive information about the warranty procedure.

In addition, the cycle mechanics check each others’ work. No bike leaves our factory without this quality control check. Fully assembled bikes are also checked again on a random testing basis. Our mission is to deliver perfect bicycles.

We are also providing for our own ‘fresh blood’. Currently we have six trainee cycle mechanics, among them incidentally two young women. We are also training a purchasing executive.

Wheelbuilding at riese und müller

Alongside the main frame, the wheels are a central component of the bikes and contribute much to its quality. Only a well built wheel with high quality, carefully tensioned stainless steel spokes will last for years and cover many happy kilometres without the dreaded ‘ping’. For many years riese und müller have hand-built all of our wheels in house. Supporting us in this is a so-called semi-automatic spoking machine from market leader Holland Mechanics, which threads the nipples onto the spokes and brings the wheel into an initial level of tension. Because truing the wheel, or setting the precise tension of each individual spoke, is critical for the quality of the wheel, we entrust this to hand craftsmanship.

25 No machine can yet achieve the tight tolerances which we demand, so the experience and hard-learned skill of our wheelbuilders is called for. So each wheel has a sticker attached as shown above, as a mark of its quality.

“The very elaborately constructed and extremely rigid monocoque main frame of the Birdy impresses with its advanced high-tech design. Unlike on the other test candidates, both brake and gear cables are well protected, running inside the frame … It’s sportingly stiff but hugely comfortable. With the Comfort stem you sit moderately upright, giving this full suspension cult bike great safety in traffic. It is the most nippy bike in our comparison, without being unstable , and with its easy-shifting eight-speed hub gear it’s ideally equipped for urban use … Verdict: with its sporty ride and the comfort of a full-suspension high-tech bike, it’s way ahead of the rest.”

“A superbly made, very refined comfort folding bike in the premium category. Impresses with its confident ride, the tightly-tuned full suspension and the well-chosen components. Recommended buy for city cyclists and commuters!”

“Design will out, especially as alternatives to the ‘top dog’ Birdy are thin on the ground … despite its unusually small 18” wheels the Birdy proved itself a folding bike with particularly good riding characteristics … This mature design classic can be assembled to suit in a modular ordering system.”

“The Birdy hasn’t just become prettier, but it’s also got better thanks to many wellthought out detail design changes affecting both the fold and the ride. Even the already highly invigorating and dynamic handling has been further improved … The fun factor is huge!… Test verdict: very good.” RADtouren 5/2005, Page 48

Birdy specification options

Five colours The new Birdy is available in five colours: black (RAL 9005), pink (RAL 3015), yellow (RAL 1006), cream white (RAL 9001) and anthracite (matt). Birdys with disc brakes (standard on the Birdy alfine disc, optional on the Birdy speed and rohloff) are supplied with a special frame which is available in either black or polished aluminium. Mudguards The front mudguard is fitted with a rigid three32 point fixing. The rear mudguard is attached to a robust support arch or to the SL rear rack. A mudflap protects from spray (Pictured on p. 11, Birdy city premium, weight: 250 g).

Stem Two stems are available for the new Birdy, both of which are height-adjustable in four steps. With both stems adjusted to their highest position, the comfort stem is 130 mm closer to the saddle than the sport stem, permitting a more upright riding position.

Lowrider The lowrider is fixed to the front fork and allows mounting panniers for perfect luggage balance (weight: 180 g).

SL carrier The SL carrier rack has been completely redesigned for the 2010 model year. It attaches to the rear swing-arm. When the Birdy is folded, it can be rolled along on the integrated inline skater rollers (weight: 550 g).

Expedition carrier You can load up to 15 kg onto the expedition carrier. It is securely mounted to the frame and rear swingarm, and thanks to its articulated design folds up automatically when the Birdy is folded. Delivered as standard with the expedition carrier are inline skate rollers so that the folded Birdy can be rolled along. To use panniers, mudguards must be fitted as the panniers need the strong mudguard arch for lateral support. The tubing diameter of the expedition carrier is 16 mm. All Birdys since the 2003 model year can be fitted with the expedition carrier (weight: 850 g).

well in chosen three steps

Kickstand The very lightweight aluminium side stand is mounted to the rear dropout and is length adjustable, so it can be set to match thicker or thinner tires (weight: 215 g). Retro-fitting older Birdys to this new stand, fitted from last year’s models onwards, is possible. For Birdy hybrid a second kickstand for the front fork is used. It is not possible to use this second kickstand together with a lowrider.

Birdy lighting: Shimano The Birdy lighting system is very high performance and employs a minimum of cabling – an important factor for a folding bike. A 6-volt bumm LUMOTEC ovalsensoplus (171SNDi) serves as the front light, powered by a Shimano hub dynamo (DH-2N72). As an rear light the bumm DToplight senso (328BLHR) LED battery light is fitted, which switches itself on automatically when it gets dark. This system does not conform to German StVZO regulations (weight: 750 g).

Birdy lighting: SON This very high quality lighting system is fitted with a hub dynamo from the SON company, based in Tübingen, Germany. It is the world leader in hub dynamos of the very highest quality. The SON XS is a very easy rolling hub dynamo developed specially for small wheels. The hub dynamo powers only the front light, the 6-volt-LED-light busch und müller LUMOTEC IQ Cyo senso plus (outstanding 40 lux!). At the rear the bumm Dtoplight senso (328BLHR) battery light is employed, which switches on automatically when it gets dark. This system does not conform to German StVZO regulations (weight: 630 g).

SON lighting system for disc brakes The manufacturer SON has developed a special hub dynamo with the disc brake mounting on the right hand side. The SON XS100 disc is very easy-rolling and exceptionally lightweight. It powers only the front light, the top quality SON Edelux headlight with a black anodised finish. At the rear the bumm Dtoplight senso (328BLHR) battery light is employed, which switches on automatically when it gets dark. This system does not conform to German StVZO regulations (weight: 630 g). The finest lighting system on the market!

Hybrid lighting The hybrid lighting (only for Birdy hybrid) uses its energy from the akku of the electric engine. It can easily put on directly on the handlebar unit. It powers the front light LUMOTEC IQ Fly with a special electronic for e-bikes. At the rear the bumm Dtoplight senso (328BLHR) battery light is employed, which switches on automatically when it gets dark (weight: 210 g).

Birdy specification options

Disc brakes The Birdys with disc brakes (standard on the Birdy alfine disc, optional on the Birdy speed and rohloff) benefit from the very highest levels of braking performance and superb controllability. The front disc brakes are mounted on the right hand side, so as not to increase the folded size. The brakes fitted are Shimano’s BR-575, and both brakes and hubs are specially adapted for the Birdy (weight increase vs V-brakes: 300 g). The special frame used for disc 34 brakes is available either in black or in polished aluminium.

Magura HS 33 hydraulic rim brakes The braking performance and reliability of the Birdy can be significantly improved by using Magura HS33 hydraulic brakes, well proven over many years. Maintenance is also reduced (Extra weight: 90 g).

Avid Single Digit 5 V-Brakes V-brakes are very lightweight yet powerful rim brakes, which offer more than enough braking power for many applications. From the 2009 model year the Birdy has been equipped with particularly high performance brake levers which allow the braking force level to be adjusted (Avid Speed Dial 7, not on the Birdy city/ city premium for technical reasons). Combined with very easy-action Teflon coated brake cables, the Birdy’s braking performance is considerably enhanced.

Folding lock “Bordo” The ABUS Bordo folding lock can be tucked into a bag which can be attached to various locations on the Birdy via a strap (weight: 1.030 g).

Pump The SKS Wese XL is fitted inside the seatpost and in this location is protected from the weather and against theft (weight: 170 g).

MKS Ezy Promenade plug-in pedal This plug-in pedal can be removed with a single hand action, further reducing the width (weight: 354 g) of the folded Birdy. This pedal is only available as an accessory – it cannot be factory fitted.

well chosen in three steps

Birdy case The Birdy case is manufactured from a particularly tough plastic and also incorporates an integral aluminium frame. It can be rolled around easily thanks to special rollers and a comfortable handle. To pack the Birdy you only need to remove the seatpost and pedals – naturally there’s space for these in the case, too. It is lockable and provides optimal protection for transport by train, plane or by car (external dimensions: 90 x 70 x 41 cm, internal: 80 x 66 x 38 cm, weight: 8.600 g).

Trailer kit for case The trailer kit is available as an accessory. It consists of pneumatic wheels and a trailer hitch (Weber type) for the case. The wheels can be attached via a quickrelease, so that short stretches between train station or airport and your hotel can be covered using the Birdy as towing bike and the case as a trailer. The trailer kit is only suitable for use on good road surfaces (weight: 3.360 g).

Bag The rucksack bag is the ideal complement to the Birdy. Two large compartments accommodate your everyday luggage. Then undo the zip around the edge and another compartment appears with space for the folded Birdy. The bag can now be carried with a shoulder strap, and the rucksack compartments remain useable. Material: extradurable Cordura Plus (weight: 1.300 g).

Cover In just a few seconds you can pop the cover over the Birdy and secure its lower edge with the drawcord. The cover is made from tear-resistant nylon. It can, like a rain-jacket, tuck away very small into its built-in mesh bag and then be fastened to the bike. The cover has an extra zip on the top which can be opened to unfold the stem, so that a Birdy equipped with the expedition carrier and rollers can still be rolled along even with the cover in place (weight: 340 g).

Frame bag The frame bag is for small items of luggage: ideal for a toolkit or lock. It is fitted with a small extra pocket on the outside. Because the frame bag is fixed under the main frame tube it has a low centre of gravity and does not affect the handling (weight: 180 g).
