ARENA Capturing Essence

1

“How do artworks present layered ideas of society and culture?”

Individuals within their group are tasked to produce a bricolage. A creation of a model from existing or found objects or elements in connection with the group theme, location and influence.

2

Collage

Part of Ten Posters: Illustrations for Art-Language. Since 1976, Art & Language’s project has continued, through Mel Ramsden and Michael Baldwin. Working with very varied mediums, from painting to depicting acts of society.

“transition within society” by author Influenced by the layers depicted within ART-LANGUAGE poster and Baldwin and Ramsden express the power of collaboration within society. This collage takes a closer look at who forms our society and the encapsulated remnant of history is transformed through newer forms of architecture.

Fragment of the Cathedral

To form from what was once called modern architecture but now as historical by taking a fragment of the body and breaking it down to its finest form (powder) and broken pieces (chips), mixing the powder with concrete. 5

Bricolage: Essence by author My collage looks at transition and our society been formed by individuals rather than significant individuals nor race. This is represented through the fragment with the use of one colour from broken pieces of the Coventry Cathedral Ruins to express a society of individuals made of different shapes and sizes. Pieces of Coventry Cathedral’s body is broken down and held together through a concrete core to encapsulate the essence of previous society within a modern era.

THE MODERN GAZETTEER Façades and Yards: Revealing Highgate Gooch Street, Birmingham

11

The focus of this project is in the façades that manifest the atmosphere of Highgate, in relation to ideas of economy of means. With concern with ideas of landscape and topography, with the yards that exist as part of the various uses of the site, with gardens both formal and informal, and with places that are not easy to classify- the leftover or nebulous.

In current day the street appears Quiet and Divided. With similar typologies forming the street line and orientated informally to create pockets of green space and greater private amenity space.

Gooch Street in 1950’s functioned as an high street in Highgate with links to Birmingham City Centre, and a busy atmosphere overall. The street are formed by terrace’s of shops on the ground floor and housing above it.

The observation pulled us closer to am particular part of Gooch Street which is the bridge. This part of the street hosts multiple layers of history. From Iron Art monument to Birmingham’s foundation to the bricked in fire fighter holes that were used to pump up water during a fire in the area. Though one almost hidden history that peaked our eyes were the an entry way that was bricked in, engraved on it WOMEN. This later led us to discovering an important space to the life of Gooch Street which were public Female and Male WC on the bridge; which use to service the busy Detail Drawing of Women WC Entrance Stone Elements Scale 1:5

“Perhaps the observation of things has remained my most important formal education; for observation later becomes transformed into memory” - Aldo Rossi, A Scientific Autobiography

The primary focus will be on the a key moment but attention will also be made to where the moment sits within the wider plan of the building and how the building sits within its landscape context.

Key Moments of Study

The Southern Elevation brings together the historical reference of the theatre of orange as an amphitheatre by activating the elevation as a backdrop, the concrete benches as the stage and timber seating for the audience.

“To understand a city, beyond its monuments, beyond the history of its stones, is to rediscover the specific way of being of its inhabitants.” - The Architecture of the City (1982, 180)

Within the unit’s ideas of an ‘economy of means’, it is ask to consider how a modest addition can alter the rest; how the context is transformed, reorganised, cut, divided, fragmented or furthered as an architectural intervention to reframe the civic potential of Highgate.

The proposal looks at a combination of three parts to

form the public space. First are, in situ concrete benches are part of the foundation with timber seat top. Taking inspiration from our second study in Modern Gazetteer; while studying David Brownlow Theatre as a case study I was moved by the outdoor theatre space and the way the in situ concrete foundation of the building was celebrated to create an monolithic bench as a form of art and stage. Second, pre-cast concrete roof elements and panels. Working with concrete allowed for experimentation with different method of construction, pre-cast and in situ and to create special elements such as the 800mm canopy curving over the bench. Third, are the Iron Works taking inspiration from our initial study in Modern Gazetteer exploring Gooch Street.

In situ Concrete Bench

We came across an infra-ordinary piece of history buried behind layers of art work; this was the entry way into the Women’s WC. 39

The proposed built fabric consists of multiple methods of construction, which are Pre-Cast Concrete walls and structures with In Situ concrete foundations. Where Internal space is found, walls are formed of Timber Battens with Insulation and Cement Bocks and Plaster Board finish. The roof are constructed using Pre-Cast concrete T-Beams to hand the
