Tapping the Earth DHURNAL MINING LEASE & FACILITIES Dhurnal Oilfield lies 60 kms South-West of Islamabad in the Potwar Basin. To-date this field has produced over 50 million barrels of oil. It is currently producing over 150 BOPD and around 1.0 MMscfd gas. In order to ensure enhanced and stabilized production as well as efficient water disposal, an environment friendly water injection secondary recovery project was implemented, the first ever secondary recovery project in Pakistan. Dhurnal was the largest oil producing field in Pakistan with peak production of 20,162 BOPD in 1988. OPL re-evaluated Dhurnal Field and has identified new un-drained remaining potential which will be exploited by drilling a new well based on 3D seismic. This will help to achieve objective to increase production and reserves for this asset. Dhurnal Field has a total of seven wells. At present two are producing, one well on gas lift while other is producing naturally. The Production facility consists of HP separators, LP separators with de-salters, Coolers/heat exchangers and storage tanks. The produced water is being dumped into the lower most Formation in water injection wells using high-pressure water injection pumps. One HP gas compressor is used for gas lift purposes, powered by gas driven engines. Dhurnal Field generates its own electric power with the help of one generator which runs on fuel gas produced in the field. In addition to this one diesel generator is also available as standby. DHURNAL WATER INJECTION PLANT Water Injection System, involves the injection of produced water back into the underground formation due to the fact that the
volume of produced water exceeds storage and dumping capacity. Since the produced water contains small quantities of oil along with other chemicals, it is not discharged into the local environment owing to the harmful effects it could have on the soil and local water resources. Large, multistage pumps, capable of generating pressures up to 3600 Psig are used to inject 2500 to 3000 BPD of water into the formations. Water injection plant also comprises a water treatment plant before injection for maximizing crude oil recovery. BHANGALI DEVELOPMENT & PRODUCTION LEASE & FACILITIES There are two wells in Bhangali field. In 1998, the completion string of Bhangali-1 was replaced with properly designed gas lift string having gas mandrels to lift the crude from deepest possible point. The Production facility consists of one HP separator, Coolers/ heat exchangers, Amine sweetening plant and storage tanks. One HP gas compressor is used for gas lift purposes, powered by gas driven engines. The field is electrically powered with the help of one diesel generator while the second is as standby. Bhangali field witnessed an increase in oil and gas production to 475 BOPD and 2.14MMscfd during 2002 by implementing better-depleted field management techniques. Bhangali well No.1 was deepened to the base of Khewra formation and tested presence of hydrocarbon in 2010, however, this formation was very tight with low permeability containing noncommercial production. In 2011, we have acquired 119 sq. km of 3D seismic which appears very promising for a new well. New well has been planned to be drilled in near future.
RATANA DEVELOPMENT & PRODUCTION LEASE & FACILITIES There are two gas and condensate wells in Ratana field namely R-2 and R-3. The production facilities are installed at R-2 location. The facility includes two HP separators, condensate storage tanks and Loading bay etc. The fluid stream produced from R-3 is received at R-2 facility through an 8” dia-meter and about 8.5 Km long pipeline. The produced gas is shipped to POL Meyal facilities for gas processing and Sulphur recovery. The field is electrically powered with the help of one diesel generator while the second is as standby. The dedication and commitment of OPL’s team at Ratana helped tap the resource potential of the previously bypassed Eocene Zone and resulted in the discovery of new production possibilities. Ratana-2 well was deepened in 2009 and resulted in production from the Datta Formation (Jurassic). A new well Ratana-4 was drilled down to 18,100 ft (TD). The well was tested in Wargal Formation which started at a good rate, however, due to water break through and plugging phenomenon it produced at marginal rates. Rig has been mobilized to workover and recomplete the well in Datta Sands, which produced tight gas at very marginal rates. The secondary objectives are to test Datta main Sands. MIRPUR KHAS BLOCK OPL, as Operator, drilled fifteen exploratory wells in this concession on behalf of the Joint Venture. Our consistent efforts and expertise have led to the discoveries of Kausar Deep-1, which flowed 31.48 MMscfd of gas and Usman-1 flowing 48 MMscfd of gas during initial production testing. To add to the impressive run of exploration operations in the area Umar-1 was discovered, which tested a flow rate of 3,000 BPD of condensate. Another discovery, Ali-1, was made in the area with a flow rate of 22 MMscfd. Ahmed-1 was discovered in 2006 and flowed about 29 MMscfd gas in initial testing. At full production this contributed significantly to OPL’s cash flow. Lately, with the approval of the Government of Pakistan, OPL
assigned its working interest along with Operatorship to M/s BP Pakistan Exploration & Production Inc. (BPP) effective January 01, 2009. KHIPRO BLOCK With one of the largest drilling programs in place at Khipro, OPL made four significant gas discoveries. These include Naimat Basal (27 MMscfd), Siraj South (24.3 MMscfd), Bilal North (6 MMscfd) and Bilal-1 (14.5 MMscfd). Two more discoveries in the Khipro Exploration License were achieved namely Kamal North-1 (2124 bopd and 6.25 MMscfd gas) and Rahim-1 (851 bopd). OPL as Operator drilled fourteen exploratory wells in Khipro Block. Lately, with the approval of the Government of Pakistan, OPL assigned its working interest along with Operatorship to M/s BP Pakistan Exploration & Production Inc. (BPP) effective January 01, 2009. SINJHORO BLOCK Sinjhoro EL is located about 65 Kms NE of Hyderabad in Sindh Province. OPL is a joint venture partner in Sinjhoro Concession alongwith GHPL and OGDCL as Operator. The first field Chak 63 in Sinjhoro concession was discovered in 2002 where one exploratory and three appraisal wells have been drilled, targeting Lower Goru sands which produced commercial quantities of Hydrocarbon. Subsequently further interpretation of Sinjhoro Block Seismic data provided basis to explore the hydrocarbon potential of the area located in the Sinjhoro EL. In this Joint venture drilled and discovered following total ten (10) Oil and Gas condensate fields targeting reservoir sands in the lower Goru formation of cretaceous age. The Commercial Discoveries have been approved by the Government and approval of Development and Production Leases is under process. The gas from the discoveries has been allocated to SSGCL by the Government of Pakistan. The production
commenced from Sinjhoro Fields in January, 2013 and presently producing 14 MMscfd of gas and 1,100 barrel of oil per day. MEHAR BLOCK Mehar concession is operated by Petronas Carigali and has a gas-condensate discovery from Mehar-1 with gross recoverable reserves around 0.75 TCF from the Cretaceous sand reservoir. Mehar-2, an appraisal well was recently drilled about 130 meters down dip of Mehar-1 at Cretaceous level, which tested good quantities of gas / condensate. The Ranikot formation of Paleocene was also tested with commercial quantities of gas / condensate. The overall recoverable reserves could be as high as 1 TCF. So far four exploratory wells and one appraisal well have been drilled in Mehar Block. The Field Development is in progress. First gas is expected in 1st Quarter, 2014 with production of about 30 MMscfd gas and 3,000 barrels of condensate per day. Mehar-3 well was drilled and completed as oil and gas producer from Pab Sandstone. Another exploratory well Sofiya-2 was drilled and tested oil and gas from Ranikot Formations. SAKHI SARWAR BLOCK OPL and ZPCL were awarded Sakhi Sarwar Block located in District D.G. Khan and Rajanpur, Punjab Province. Operator, OPL, has undertaken a seismic survey of 200 kms and re-entry in Sakhi Sarwar well. OPL is planning to drill a new exploration well Ghani-1 in this exploration licence.
MARWAT BLOCK OPL signed Marwat EL along with ZPCL on January 22, 2007 wherein OPL plans to carry out 100 Kms of 2D Seismic acquisition in addition to Geology & Geophysical studies and reprocessing of vintage seismic. Surface Geological surveys were carried out in 2012-13. HARNAI SOUTH BLOCK OPL and ZPCL signed Harnai South EL on February 16, 2010, located in District Sibi of the Balochistan Province. OPL/ZPCL are committed to make a minimum investment of US@ 2.55 MM. OPL has plans to acquire 186 sq. km of reconnaissance seismic survey over this block. RESERVES OPL’s share in the available reserves in its own operated fields is 10.901 MMBOE and 11.067 MMBOE in Sinjhoro and Mehar. These reserves translate into a value of US $ 748 million approximately.
