1. BRIEF T The AA Visiting Scchools are satellite e schools that take e place in differen nt cities all around d the world in partn nership with presttigious local institu utions. These schools focus on lo ocal issues -culturre, environment, e economy, society-- and follow the de esign methodolog gies developed at the Architectural Association. T The program starte ed with a symposium in June at the e Guggenheim Mu useum Bilbao and d will be followed by a workshop in July at the Alhondiga in Bilbao. Th he w workshop will invesstigate new design processes to prroduce context se ensitive environme ents from a critical perspective. Loc cal ‘materials’ such h as user behaviour, social p patterns or environ nmental analysis w will inform the dessign process. In order o to construct this t agenda, the workshop w will inve est on digital desig gn ategies by studyin ng data-feed proto ocols, environmen ntal simulation sofftware and algorith hmic design. and fabrication stra T The workshop will explore the questtion of ‘place’ or ‘ttopos’ and its radical transformation n in the recent yea ars due to the pro oliferation and ava ailability of environmental para ameters. Departin ng from the notion n of ‘computing,’ u understood as info ormation processin ng, strategies of ‘d data mining’ and ‘indexing’ ‘ will be proposed as sensible readings of the site and the terrritory. T The workshop aims at bringing toge ether design strate egies and the criticcal utilization of both local and glob bal, material and virtual, v visible and invisible in nformation of the p place. To build up pon new operation nal platforms of en nvironmental read dings, the proposa als will work on the e diagram and the e indexing, as opposed to dissociated parametric strategies. s T The site, Punta Zo orroza, has been chosen c as a residu ual area in comple ex topographies as a well as a forme er industrial site, generated by the in nsertion of in nfrastructural tissu ues in the territory y. Many have referred to these placces as by-product of the era of globalization, and as a result they have e often appeared coupled with new cconstructions thatt have been virallyy spread accross tthe territory in the e last 40 years or so. s These spaces s that are neither private p nor public ntially interesting tto engage with the e contemporary urban ecologies. Departing D from this s ‘generic’ typolog gical condition and d but ‘common’ are identified as poten ended’ environme ental data obtained d from the specificcities of the site will w build towards th he notion of: by integrating ‘exte
TTOPOS- Place T The breeding of loccal environmental parameters will g generate new form ms of architectura al agency and expression. Diverse mechanisms m will be b used to m materialize ‘invisible’ information suc ch as environmen ntal and social con nditions, users’ prreferences, digital information, etc. Each team will be e looking at one m main environmenta al parameter, in its s broadest sense, such as sun ligh ht, programmatic densification, d urba an flows, users’ da ata collected from urban behavioura al patterns, potential energetic consum mption/production,, etc to synthesize e ‘Datascapes’ tha at will feed into the e projects. These ‘Datascapes’ will be built from the ollowing devices, software and stra ategies: fo
