The Boiler Houses No.4 and No.6 which were built in 1914 have accommodated the Faculty of Architecture in santralistanbul Campus since 2014. The refurbishment of the two boiler buildings into our Faculty was designed by Nevzat SayÄąn, NSMH office. The two have granted the International Architecture Award in 2018 by the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and received the first prize in the Restoration/Renovation category.

A Starter Designer’s
KI T
in the COVID-19 Pandemic
As a future architect/interior designer/industrial designer, you need to get used to the tools of you profession. Your initial toolkit will help you to formulate and express your ideas. A starter designer’s kit includes:
LOGBOOK Get a sturdy and large notebook (i.e. A5), preferably with blank or dotted pages that you can use to make sketches, note down ideas and references. SKETCHBOOK You will need an A4 size sketchbook with pages having at least 100g weight. It is best if it’s with spirals and a hard cover. PENCILS Have a series of pencils ranging from 2H to 4B. You will also need special sketch pencils with 1-2mm leads. CHARCOALS, MARKERS, DRY CRAYONS are also welcome! ERASER Even though we do not encourage frequent erasing during sketching, it would be wise to have a good eraser for emergencies. DIGITAL CAMERA Now that you venture to be a designer, taking photos with your mobile phone simply won’t do. Please get a digital camera, even if it’s a very simple one, and learn to use it properly.
MODEL MAKING TOOLS As a start, you will need to get a decent craft knife and/or exacto, a metal ruler of 30 or 50cm, and a cutting mat. COMPUTER ACCESS You will gradually develop specialized computer skills throughout your education as architects/designers. You need to make sure that you get accustomed to spending time with your laptops/at the computer lab researching and developing your ideas. WEB CAMERA & MICROPHONE Even though these are not normally considered as an integral part of your designer’s kit, because of the unsual circumstances caused by COVID-19 Pandemic, studios will be held online. You will need to use both a web camera and a microphone during the studio hours. INTERNET ACCESS Because of the Pandemic, you need to have an interrupted internet access to participate the online studios. WORKSTATION If you study at home, then you need to organize a workstation for yourself not only during the studio hours but also out of studio hours. If it is possible, please reserve a fixed place and organize there according to your spatial necessities. ex: A work desk, keeping tools and materials over/around it etc. You will need there to produce after the online studio as well as document your working process, too. FLEXIBLE LONG ARM CELL PHONE HOLDER Documenting your will be an important part of your distance design education. You should buy a basic flexible long arm lazy cell phone holder and fix it to your table. You will record your design process by using it, too. MOBILE PHONE APPS & COMPUTER PROGRAMS As a designer, you will learn to design by using digital tools, too. For this reason, you will need some basic mobile phone apps and computer programs. They will announce all to you soon. BOOKS & JOURNALS Even though these are also not normally considered as an integral part of your designer’s kit, you will need to constantly watch out for what is happening in the design world at large. There are a number of architecture and interior design books and periodicals awaiting your attention. Use your spare time to explore these.

Maximum credit load of students in a semester 42 ECTS, in an academic year 80 ECTS. (excluding summer school). Minimum credit load of students in a semester: 20 ECTS. Undergraduate students in the first and second semester may not exceed the normal credit load (30 credit) The boards of directors of the faculties may decrease a student’s minimum credit load if they deem necessary.
Withdraw
The compulsory courses and the repeated courses due to the "F" grade cannot be withdrawn. However they can leave elective courses and compulsory courses they repeat with the aim of increasing their grade point average until four weeks before the end of the courses.
Grade Point Averages (GPA)
Academic standing of students is followed with “Semester Grade Point Average” (“SGPA”) for the courses they took in the completed semester and “Overall Grade Point Average” (“OGPA”) calculated for all courses they took.
A AB+ B BC+ C CD+ D F
4,00 Very good 3,70 Very good 3,30 Good 3,00 Good 2,70 Good 2,30 Average 2,00 Average 1,70 Conditional pass 1,30 Conditional pass 1,00 Conditional pass 0,00 Fail
contribution of course to average = cource credit x numerical value of pass grade

Students can calculate their grade point averages on GPA Cal. tab in their SIS page.
Academic Standing | on probation
Students whose grade point average at the end of any semester is 1.75 shall be deemed as probational student for the following semester. Probational students are not assigned credit load that exceeds ordinary credit load (30 credit).
| unsatisfactory
A student in the status of probational student shall be deemed student with unsatisfactory results if she/he fails to increase his/her grade point average to above 1.75 at the end of the semester during which she/he is a probational student. Student who increases his/her grade point average to 1.75 or above shall be removed from the position of probational student or student with unsatisfactory results.
Graduation
In order for a student to graduate from his/her undergraduate program, the student shall be obliged to complete the program curriculum with a grade point average of at least 2.00 and have an overall grade point average of at least 2.00. Those who complete their studies within eight semesters at most with an Overall GPA of 3.50 or above shall be included in the l ist of high honor list while those who complete their studies within eight semesters at most with an Overall GPA between 3.00 and 3.49 shall be included in the honor list

BASED BASIC DESIGN
ComputationBased_BasicDesign @ BiLGi is a specially developed first year design studio integrating latest high-end design and manufacturing technologies to design education in its most early year. The purpose of the studio is to develop a new generation design education milieu by integrating 1:1 scale construction experience through an understanding of materials and computational design+manufacturing technologies from the very first year of design education. The main objective of the studio is to develop creative ways of design thinking and constructing through materials, geometry and recent technologies. Computational technologies and means rather than just being tools, inhabits a quite capable design logic, that requires an alteration of settled educational habits and pedagogies. The pedagogical intentions of the studio is to develop an awareness to the nature of things, materials, technologies and their close/far environment. Course Description This course aims to help students understand the world through abstraction and conceptualization of their surroundings: shapes, forms, figures, colors, textures, materials, scales, space(s) and like -and use these understandings to produce organizations: designs as compilations, compositions, arrangements and rearrangements. Series of assignments intend to develop the skills of students in simultaneous efforts of analysis (reading/decoding) and development (writing/encoding) of relationships. While requirements and restrictions help them concentrate on specific aspects of design thinking, hands-and-minds-on experimentation within the 2-D or 3-D design space expand the possibilities. The product and the process are equally valued in the design studio. The process is a semi-individual one which is supported via critical discussions during the studio sessions. The students develop skills in communication and evaluation design ideas while taking the first steps in critical design thinking. The process, as well as the product is achieved via logging, sketching, taking notes, photographing, digital and/or physical modelling and prototyping.
Learning Outcomes On successful completion of this module students will: Discover methods of analyzing and attributing meaning to perceptual environment. Develop sense of certain principles of abstraction in design. Develop skills in defining and building complex relationships between physical entities, two and three dimensional geometric figures, forms. Discover the basic rules about two and three dimensional design thinking and making. Understand concept and use of color in design works. Develop skill of communicating design ideas via use of appropriate terminology.
Course Policy Attendance is crucial in Basic Design course as the accomplishment of its objectives mainly depends on the student’s participation in the research, design and discussion processes that take place during studio hours. Therefore students who are absent in more than 5 classes (without medically reported excuses) will be considered to have failed. Only the medical reports that are taken from a general hospital will be accepted as an excuse.
