hen you hear the word summer, what comes to mind? Warm weather? Pool parties? Sundress season? Frozen drinks? Candy slabs everywhere? So much comes to mind when you hear the word summer. It’s my favorite season for various reasons. One of the reason is it puts you in a happy mood. Some parts of the world may argue the spring and summer are the same season but you know for sure that the summer is where it’s at. I know the summer can bring out some of the best tunes in artists when they’re expressing their love for the summer. Check out Big Yum’s top 20 songs for the summer and put them in ya deck if you don’t already have them in rotation in the Slab.

Q

How did your hometown play a part in your current success?

A: “When I was in Kenner I was just kinda more into sports. I didn’t really have a career goals besides that (sports). It really didn’t hit me until I moved to Los Angeles, California. Once was able to move to a bigger city, see more of the industry, and the everyday entrepreneur. That kinda really opened my eyes to the bigger picture of the world, and that made me really want to go for it. “

Q

Can you tell me exactly what it is that you do?

A: I created a company called We Major M & M. It’s a marketing and management company. We formerly work under Atlantic Records. We are able to do contract work with all major labels, from Atlantic Records, Def Jam, RCA, and we work with a lot of independent artist also. By the end of 2016, we will change it from management to artist development company, where we can work with the new artist and really create their career and their brand for them.

Q

When you began what did you set out to accomplish?

A: I really just wanted to satisfy my

family the most out of it all. They were the ones that supported me growing up. My mom put me through schools, always paying for this and that, so I kinda wanted to just be successful for the fan to tell me that I did something good. You know represent form my last name. That was pretty much my biggest thing I wanted to set out to do. I didn’t want to be on that couch at 30, you know.

Q

What made you choose this route?

A: It didn’t start until I got to college. Like I said I came from an athletic background. I went to school to actually train, workout, and to try to hopefully join the basketball team. When I got there I noticed that was a totally different world. I mean that was a big deal. I definitely wasn’t at that caliber to play at that level. That’s when I started Deejaying, being the school deejay,. and that led to me working at the school radio stations, where I had my own show. I was always a fan of music big time. I mean just doing all of the parties, getting the response from my fellow classmates, everyone tuning in to my show on Tuesday nights, and coming out to the parties to check me out was when I realized I can take that and build off of it.

Q

Tell us how you keep yourself motivated once things get tough.

Q

What is your most triumphant moment?

A: I have always used the philosophy of always smiling even when you are going through the worst. I was a big family guy, so when I lost both of my parents I felt like if i could have gone through that and got through it that nothing in the industry could be tough. I have always used the motto of the glass is halfway full rather than empty. Tough times I never really sat on them, I always got over them real quick. I know that it was a pass over and it will come and go. I never really got stuck in tough times, I just kept it moving. A: It wouldn’t be anything within the industry. That would definitely be meeting my wife, and starting a family. Just being the head of a household, something that I thought I would never do. You know, in the industry being young, ambitious, and just running the streets the way we did in the industry to now being a husband, a father, a homeowner, and things like that. That’s my biggest triumph today. Billboardgang // Magazine

11

Q

What is your most memorable memory in the industry?

A: That would be watching my former street team from 2010 -11, my college interns, looking back from then until now and seeing where they are. One of my interns is now doing sounds and soundtracks for Game Of Thrones on HBO. Another one of my interns was able to leave the company and kickstart D1’s career. He pretty much quarterbacked all of that. Another one of my interns is an artist now, I know him as Trent, but the world knows him as T-Ray the Violinist. He was my intern, now he is traveling and really playing. Being able to watch those guys who I drove nuts, being at their doors at 6 a.am. pushing them. Them yelling at me because I was too hard, seeing them now succeed and are huge in the industry, that would be my biggest accomplishment. I have always wanted to just inspire and help people create themselves.

Looking at those three guys thats like my biggest accomplishments. I love watching HBO and seeing Miles name on the credits. Seeing Trent kill thousands of fans, watching D1 blossom, and knowing Ben was one of my interns that left me and said he wanted to go work with this guy D1. He saw the potential, and seeing where D1 is at now is another accomplishment. Them watching me, motivate them to do what they are doing…. I mean it don’t get no better than that.

Q

Who is someone that we would know that you have worked with?

A: Well the list is very long. We have worked with Sevyn Streeter, Try songs, Fabolous, Diggy Simmons, T. I., Maino, and the list just goes on and on. Mostly any Atlantic artist from 08 until now, such as Wiz Khalifa, my company has worked hands on with them.

Q

What makes you different for anybody else that is doing the same thing that you do?

A: I guess knowing both sides of the industry. I definitely know that you definitely have to be a spiritual man in this world. A lot of people kinda loose faith and loose sight of the important things. In this industry we all have the 12

Billboardgang // Magazine

same goals, but just try to stay grounded is what I tell myself to do better than the next man.

Q

What would you say to your younger self if you had the opportunity?

A: Don’t waste time. I felt like the things that I do now, I could have done a long time ago if I would have just jumped out on faith and started it. It should not have take me to move to L.A., or see other things to really know that I could have done it. I always had those visions, I was just always afraid to do it. So just don’t waste your time. Your body is definitely more capable of doing more things

while you are younger. Start young, and whatever idea you have you should definitely go at its because a vision without work is just a dream. You need to put work behind your vision to create what you want, along with timing.

Q

How would you rather people contact you?

A: You can definitely contact me at www.themajorinfluence.com, it’s an industry site that we started. Of course I’m all over social media: @majormook James “Major Mook” Butler @Majormook

BLAKCARD ATM

B

“THE INTRO”

lakcard ATM’s attempt to showcase his talent as an artist as well as his place in Hip Hop is a step in the right direction. With his second studio album, he’s definitely on his way to solidifying himself as one of the greats, among the greats. When one thinks of an intro they usually think of an introduction of some sort. That’s exactly what local artist Blakcard ATM’s “The Intro” is. He introduces us to a couple things. He introduces us to who he is as an artist, everyday person, and business man. He meticulously paints a picture with his lyrics; pulling you in one verse at a time. From start to finish he captivates your attention with thought provoking lyrics, relatable material, and style. He also has some really good collaborations from other local artist that compliments his sound.

I love an artist who tells a story through their music. While listening to Blakcard ATM’s “The Intro” I was able to picture the events he’s rapping about in my mind, as if I were there. The album starts off with “All I want” and I was hooked from the first line he spit, “All I have is my respect. All I wanted was a check. I just wanna follow my dreams and chase em with no regrets, wipe out all my debts”. No matter what age or demographic

you are,you can feel where he’s coming from. He ends the album with “Keep on dreaming”. An uplifting and encouraging song propelling one to “keep on dreaming” throughout their struggles and setbacks.

Some of my favorite tracks are: “All I Want”, “Grammy Night”, “I Deserve This”, “Can’t Escape Reality”, and “Keep On Dreaming”. “I deserve this” gave me chills because his lyrics are real and raw. I felt the emotion of his hard work and sometime setbacks. “Grammy Night” exudes style with vivid imagery of a lush lifestyle. It’s a fun song. “Can’t escape reality” has a dope beat with his vocals caressing the beat while spittin’ relatable lyrics such as, “I came from nothing, I wanted something, I wanna know what success is”. All in all Blakcard ATM’s “The Intro” is a good album. It has something for everyone. He’s “giving hope to the hopeless” and if you didn’t know, now you know “Blakcard be the name round town”! You have officially been introduced to Blakcard ATM. If you are looking to be mentally stimulated, motivated, and challenged this is an album you can’t pass up! By: Shantell the Great

As a Lady, class stands first in my look; however, I love SEXY...it sells.

In this look, I am wearing a classic BAEWATCH tank along with Vintage High waist Wrangler Jeans scored at Goodwill; finished off with 3” Strappy sandals by Coach. I choose high waist jeans to accentuate my curves, as I am generally long and lean . These Vintage Wranglers are fitted; therefore, paired well with a SEXY Baewatch tank to make the look pop. To present a grave sexy appeal , I added a simple Gold and Pearl choker to the look. Jewelry should only accessorize the look without competing with your other pieces. Lastly, I went with a pull, messy ponytail to really show off the choker, my neck, and shoulders. Kept with the class; but remember SEXY Sells.

DR. TIFFANI MCELRATH Washington D.C.

Dr. Tiffani McElrath, knew she wanted to be a dentist at a very young age. As a child, she would check her aunt’s teeth and make sure everyone in her family properly brushed and flossed. Her interest in oral health was playful at the time, but as she matured, it soon became a passion. Dr. McElrath, a graduate of Southfield High School, in Southeast Michigan, enrolled in Michigan State University, earning her bachelor’s degree in Physiology. She applied that knowledge to her desire to become a dentist when she attended the University of Michigan’s School

Many dentists jump right into practice or work at clinics, but Dr. McElrath wanted to build more experience. She took a residency, serving patients in the Washington D.C. area through Howard University. There she gained extensive knowledge of underserved, uninsured, and underinsured populations. This knowledge helped her become one of the most productive and promising new dentists in the area. Dr. Tiffani

McElrath is currently serving as lead dentist for My Community Dental Clinics at the Detroit clinic. She prides herself on caring not only for the patients’ oral health, but also for their overall wellbeing.Dr. McElrath finds satisfaction in knowing she can provide comfort to her patients, restore dignity and pride, and give them something to smile about.Dr. McElrath lives by the saying “knowledge is power, but enthusiasm flips the switch”. After becoming a dentist she pledged to continue to practice with that same energy and fire that she felt when she was first accepted to dental school.

5 Ways of Getting Your Lover to Open Up Common Truce by Darion

Y

www.commontruce.com ou finally did it! You found

someone who has made it past the obligatory first date.Past the butterflies in the stomach. The sweaty palms. You have had the conversation about family and aspirations. Hopes and dreams. Do you want to be married? Children? Now you have graduated to a few lingering, longing looks and clandestine pecks on the lips upon greeting. However, you still feel a concrete barrier which randomly presents itself during certain topics and dialogues. It’s as though they become defensive, easily irritated, then completely shut down which leaves you totally confused as to what just happened. You know there is an underlying factor which causes the disconnect. So what exactly do you do? How do you make the transition from new burgeoning prospect to the comforter and person in which they confide? I get this question a lot. I find it so interesting that there are so many people who have no clue where to go from here. Unfortunately, too many people mistake this stage as the platform to jump into the physical aspects of a relationship. Only to discover later, often in the most excruciating circumstance, that sex doesn’t provide the feedback and answers for which you may be searching. So what then, Darion? What do I do? You must understand that this is a very special time in your relationship because you are more likely to be shown your lover’s most authentic self if you create the right environment for them. But how do you lay down the platform for the overflow of connection which will bring your relationship to the next level? How do you get your lover to open up to and reveal the truth of themselves to you? From my experience, there are 5 things that will create the perfect atmosphere for building the true foundation of love, which resides in the essence of communication and understanding of one another.

1) Patience

There is nothing worse than feeling

pressured to do something that you are not ready to do. Being patient allows the space for a person to speak when they are ready to do so. To choose to let you in. The

to confide in someone who you feel judges you, or made you feel as if you were a child; would you? I wouldn’t. I bet you wouldn’t either. At this time of vulnerability, the only thing that they need to hear is care and concern.

4) Concern

greatest relationships stem from being able to take the time to grow emotionally and spiritually together. These days, so many people jump into situations, then wake up one day and realize that they have been sleeping next to a stranger. Your lover should feel comfortable enough to choose to share their innermost thoughts and desires. Once adequate time has been spent, they will begin to lean on you to hold onto their insecurities, flaws, and shortcomings.

2) Trust

Would you open up to someone you do not trust? I doubt it! Confiding in someone about personal needs and wants takes time. Trust stems from confidence and time. It is the most powerful tool when creating a foundation in your relationship. Being able to truly and sincerely rely on another person is a deeply coveted experience. A couple begins to develop trust within each other once they have reached a mutual level of respect. This is the same place that commitment begins to take root. But commitment

can only take place once you have proven that you are an open, ready and willing ear, without judgement.

3) Objectivity

When your significant other is ready to speak, don’t be emotionally MIA. Your emotional presence could set the tone for a stronger connection. Your lover should feel as if you are always there for them, and they are always able to confide in you. Being approachable and open-hearted showcases you in a favorable light. You wouldn’t want

Even though your actions may clearly show it, it’s imperative that you be vocal. Humans are social creatures. We need to hear positivity in order for us to feel secure. Providing affirmation could help break up any hesitation that may be present. Do you really care? Are you really concerned? Let them know! We need each other in order to keep going. We want to feel like our significant other desires to know more. If you are trying to get closer to your lover, s/ he w`ill need to feel that you are invested in them. Are you really listening? Really, pay attention.

5) Attention

When the opportunity presents itself, just listen. We all need someone to whom we can vent. That special person who simply understands you at your most vulnerable moments. Listen deeply and intensely. Don’t you hate when you are trying to speak to a person who continues to interrupt you? Or that person just listening to just respond? There is no worse sentiment than feeling as if your lover is not really paying attention. Don’t you want someone to be there for you when you are feeling weak as well as strong? You are now in the prime position to start creating the special mix that makes your new relationship magic. Before you put these 5 actions in motion, be sure you are able to handle what comes along with it. Your intentions should stem from genuine concern and not a thirst to obtain information. There is no turning back when you unlock this aspect of your relationship, so be smart when you are handling someone else’s problems or potential insecurities. I promise that if you follow these steps, your relationship will transition into the next beautiful stages with ease. It all begins with taking the time to understand one another, thus creating a poignantly strong, and long lasting bond built from laying the right foundation. Billboardgang // Magazine

DEFINED ARTS I began drawing at an early age, and didn't enroll in my first art class until my sophomore year of high school. It was then I discovered that I really had a gift! My high school art teacher, Fran Ostrom really pushed me to explore different mediums and enter my works into local competitions. She told me that I would one day be famous for my artwork. I was also inspired by my Uncle, Alvin Williams an artist whose work I grew up admiring and studying. I'm interested in all art, from graphic/digital art to product design. I love everything art related. I love how all artist have different styles. I really enjoy seeing how different artist can take one image and create it in so many different ways.

My art is normally related to current events. I'm influenced by trends and events occurring in time. My art is based on what I'm feeling and emotions. If a topic or event is weighing on my mind, I find a release through my artwork. I always sketched as a kid, and was introduced to charcoal my sophomore year in high school I fell in love with black and white drawings. After high school (2001), I stopped creating for a while. In 2008, when Barack Obama was elected, I decided to get back to art. I began to explore with paint and , explore with paint and began to teach myself how to use oil paint. I work with oil, acrylic, and spray paint on canvas. Winning first place in high school competition really engaged me more into my art. I knew I had a gift and an opportunity to do great things going forward with it. I have been able to meet various entertainers throughout my network. I began meeting local entertainers I knew and having them back my work using it in music videos etc... from there my recognition spread around the city. Networking has had a big impact on my career. I was able to build my brand and name from working and brushing shoulders with many top entertainers in the industry. Email: theartpreneur@gmail.com Phone: 281-248-3396

THE IRON PATRIOT When I turned 15, I learned that I had a spine disease, and will no longer be able to join the military. At that point, I started building the Iron Patriot.

My name is Valen Cepak. I am a 17 year old high school student. I have wanted to join the military ever since I was a small kid. I wanted to be in the air force. When I was 12 years of age, I could name any and every United States military jet. As I grew up my love for all the branches of the United States Military grew. When I turned 15, I learned that I had a spine disease, and will no longer be able to join the military. At that point, I started building the Iron Patriot. This truck is a 2005 Ford F-150 that I have changed into a rolling Veteran’s tribute. The truck has been a great experience by creating lasting relationships with my sponsors as well as people withIn the car scene. The truck has quite a bit done to it and a big chunk of it comes from my sponsors.

SUMMERTIME FUN IN THE SUN Ways to keep your child safe and healthy while having fun Swim Safety

Bug Bites

School is out and temperatures are climbing. What better way to cool down than diving into a swimming pool? It is very important to make sure the surroundings are safe and secure to avoid ending fun with tragedy and accidental drownings. • Proper Supervision: Children need constant adult supervision when around water. Young children can drown in as little as 6 inches of water. • Grab a buddy: Always swim with a partner. When you swim with a partner, one can grab help in an emergency. • Swim lessons: Check with your local recreational center for classes taught by a professional. • Flotation devices: For children under 5yrs of age, a flotation vest should be worn. The vest should have a strap between legs and support head. Airfilled inflatable vests and arm bands should not be worn because they do not provide sufficient flotation and can deflate easily.

Sun Protection

What is summer without a little bit of sun? Exposure to the sun and its rays can have both positive and negative health effects. Because of the negative health effects, measures should be taken to protect your skin against UVA and UVB rays. • Vitamin D: The “Sunshine Vitamin” helps the body absorb calcium among other things. • Sunscreen: Babies 6 months or younger should avoid direct sunlight. Dress infants in cool clothing that covers the body. If over 6months of age, sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15-30 should be used. Reapply every 2hrs, after swimming, and/or sweating.

Flea and mosquito bites, bee and wasp strings can be very irritating. Symptoms include mild redness, swelling, and pain, but typically do not cause serous injury. To assess your home for fleas, place a white towel on the floor for several minutes. Monitor for small black spots on the towel. If fleas are detected, pets, carpets, and furniture should be treated. Mosquitos are tricky creatures, but where there are people, food, or standing water, they’re sure to be buzzing around! Protection and treatments against these pesky bugs include:

• Sun Exposure: Limit sun exposure between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm when UV rays are the strongest. • Eye protection: UV rays can affect your eyes. Sunglasses with 99% UV protection should be used when exposed to the sun.

Hydration

An easy way to beat the heat in the hot summer sun is to stay hydrated. Fluids are lost through being active, sweating, and urinating. When children do not replace those fluids, dehydration can occur. A poor hydration status puts children at risk for health concerns such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. • Avoid soda, milk, and full strength juice because they are slowly absorbed in the stomach. • Water and sports drinks are quickly absorbed by the by the body. • Enjoy flavored water with fresh fruit such as strawberries, lemons, and oranges for a tasty treat!

• Wearing properly covered clothing • Insect repellent: Not recommended if under the age of 2 months old. If 2 months or older, repellents with 1030% DEET is appropriate. • Ice pack: reduces itching, pain, and swelling • Topical: 1% hydrocortisone cream: helps with redness, mild swelling, and itching • Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen: helps with pain • Antihistamines: reduces itching and swelling If any of these serous allergic reactions occur, call 911: • Shortness of breath • Wheeze • Face, tongue, throat swelling • Hives • Nausea or vomiting Let us make sure our little ones are staying safe and healthy this summer. BEAUTIFUL BY CLIFFANY S

ome people have awesome flawless complexions, but some of us have to work at it. Here is a few of Beautiful by Cliffany’s do's and don’ts on how to love to your skin this summer.

SKIN TIPS

sure you use the right moisturizer for your skin type. Oily skin and problem skin types require an expert moisturizer. Dry skin requires a moisturizer with more hydration.

1. CLEANSING

Wash your face twice a day to keep your skin clean and healthy. Make sure you use the right cleanser for your skin type, because this can cause skin problems if you do not use an oil base cleanser for oily skin, a soothing cleanser for dry skin, and acme fighting cleanser for problem skin. If you have skin problems it is best that you make sure to cleanse your face before bedtime.

2. TONE

A toner is used to treat your pores. It gets out all of the residue your cleanser did not remove. Applying time with a cotton ball at least twice a day will help keep your pores from getting clogged full of black and white heads.

3. EXFOLIATE

5. TREATMENT

Make sure you exfoliate at least once a week to remove the buildup of dead skin cells. Once a week is great but let's shoot for at least twice a week. Every 4 days Is awesome. Just to make sure your skin is free from all the buildup during your busy week.

4. MOISTURIZING Moisturize your face daily to keep your skin hydrated and well balanced. Make

During the summer months you tend to ignore your skin because swimming and laying out on the beach is our number one priority. But this is the time that we may pay close attention to our skin, because of the chemicals from the pools. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. Apply a sunscreen before going to the beach or pool. Make sure you wash your face after getting out from the water activities. Apply toner to clean out your pores and top it off with a moisturizer. Remember to get plenty of sleep and DO NOT pop any pimples. Picking at your pimples can cause scarring and irritation. So have fun in the sun this summer and remember your skin is your baby so care for it as you do the rest of your body. Billboardgang // Magazine

“BOLO” BURRELL, THE KING OF FITNESS “I was the average guy, power lifting, eating a cheeseburger, Taco Bell, and my body showed it. I decided to get into the best shape of my life by eating healthy, and weight lifting. I came up with the BOLO Fitness program. It has worked for me and so many other people.

I played basketball in high school. I was young and got away with eating whatever I wanted to eat. Playing basketball and eating a burger before or after each game caught up with me after high school. I was 220 pounds and went up to 300 pounds. I was disgusted with myself. When you gain that amount of weight, you really don’t see that you gained that weight. NOBODY TOLD ME THAT I WAS FAT. One day I looked at a few pictures of myself, I told myself this isn’t cute, and I have to do something about this. Within three months, no cheat meals, nothing bad, and 100% clean eating I got into the best shape of my life. I went to 230 pounds. Since then I have maintained that, and right now I am 215 pounds, You have to eat clean 100% of the time.

We have a great support group at BOLO Fitness. I am always going to be on you, but also the ladies that train with us will be on you. You are going to be held accountable for your actions. There is no room for error. There will not be any mistakes made. It will start with working out and eating healthy. Your family will get on board to help you get to where you need to be. We have had plenty of success stories, but if I had to pick my favorite transformation it would be Tammie Pettis. She trained with us four months, she did three more on her own, and lost 60 pounds. She lost another 20 on her own for a total of 80 pounds. If you see her she looks like a totally different .

me. Me personally, I like to do a meal replacement, and then eat 100% clean real foods. A lot of these ladies like to eat. They are going to get the foods that they love, but they will get healthier alternative to it and it works for everyone. The ladies that come through here are not starving themselves or anything crazy to get fit. You have some people out there that are starving themselves, thinking there are miracle drugs, or miracle supplements that will help you get skinny. That is all foolery. If you want to get a body and you want to get fit, then you have to eat healthy. There is no miracle pill, no miracle tea, no miracles wraps, no miracle herbal shake, but you have to eat 100% clean. Take the wrap off, take the waist trainer off, get rid of the supplements, invest in a gallon of water a day, get a multivitamin, start working out, and eating healthy. All of these things that are out there is either temporary weight loss or no weight loss at all. Most people that wear wraps are not in shape, and most people that are fit they don’t wear any wraps. “I was the average guy, power lifting, eating a cheeseburger, Taco Bell, and my body showed it. It is the best finiteness program in Louisiana and the results show it. Since I have started Bolo fitness we have probably had over 1,000 people come through our camps. The ones that have stayed committed get results. I am a firm believer in eating 100% healthy. I don’t put anybody on any meal plans. Everybody’s body is different. What works for you may not work for

Right now I am working on integrating guys. We have had plenty of success stories with women, and now the fellas need to get fit. The baggy clothes and being out of shape is a thing of the past. Women want a man that lifts and is hot. Eating fried chicken and drinking beer is old. We don’t do that anymore. Your health comes first. Before anything, you should always invest in your health. Noone wants to be out of shape. Get healthy and invest in yourself. People that invest in their health will strive for more, and go for things outside of their health. We have had plenty of our clients that went after things that had nothing to do with their health. They felt like if they were still overweight they never would have chased their dreams.” - Bolo

WHAT WORKS FOR YOU!

W

ith our natural hair community growing fast as ever the question is what works for you! As a woman who had work both natural and relaxed hair styles, I see no reason to battle between the two. Both hair types are very unique and there are styled beautifully. Let's check out the pros and cons ...

Thickness: natural hair tends to be much

thicker than relaxed hair. The natural hair follicles have lots of disulfide bonds which create the curl pattern that gives the curls and texture. Relaxed hair had been altered. The follicles have been broken down so that they no longer curl. This decreases the texture, therefore your hair may appear much thinner. -natural hair is easier to achieve a full look

-relaxed or permed hair is harder to flat iron and achieve a "silky" look

Tangles: natural hair is definitely high on maintenance. Although there are several hair products to help the keeping up, its still an extra step to maintain natural healthy hair. Relaxed hair is straight and therefore is much easier to manage on a daily basis.

So the question is ...what works for you?
