Every now and then you may come across someone who is concerned about the trash laying round on the street or those empty coke bottles sitting right in front of a trash can. Recycling is almost non-existent and extinct to the most common human. But for Grambling native and Alumnus Christopher Dupree he saw a problem that was on life support and he feels he is the one to breathe new life back into it. Grambition: What are your ties and/ or affiliations to Grambling?

Chris Dupree: I have deep ties to Grambling. My family is pretty much from the Arcadia, Simsboro, and Grambling area. My father was a stand out baseball athlete at GSU, my mother graduated and taught at GSU, my cousin is the city councilwoman, so I grew up in the Grambling culture. All but 6th & 7th grade were spent at a Grambling school; GSU Nursery, AJB, GMMS, GHS, & GSU!! In high school I was a 3 sport athlete basketball, baseball, and track. My senior year we made it to the Top 28 in basketball and I was apart of the State Runner Up track team running the 4x4. In college I earned my Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology and pledged Kappa Alpha Psi. I also met my wife at GSU so I’m pretty much a LOCAL, my family still remains deeply tied to Grambling. Grambition: Good deal. Why did you choose this particular idea or project you are engaged in?

CD: I chose to focus my projects’ agenda towards anti littering/recycling awareness because it is a lost topic especially in communities of color. I wanted to help create a narrative that went against the advertised torn down black community. The Louie Bear Project allows me to positively affect change in areas throughout the state with the goal of creating a brighter future through green practices. We not only want to educate everyone about recycling but also display why this benefits us. It keeps our communities

clean, brings our communities together, and it helps reduce our ecological footprint on the world.

Grambition: That is a good look there. What inspired “Louie Bear” and why “Louie Bear”? CD: I was inspired by my peers who I would talk to and still talk to about making a difference in our communities. I knew I wanted to do something more than keep our children off the street, but also give them something to do and be proud about besides sports. One day after work I noticed a 2 liter bottle just sitting in the road of my apartment complex and wondered who would even do that. And although I was not living in Louisiana at the time I knew Louisiana was facing the same issue. So I had my cause but didn’t know how I was going to positively affect this change so I googled the benefits of recycling. In doing that I found out about the United States low recycling rates but also the many things that could come from recycled material like notebooks, pen, pencil, and even clothes. All that was great but how was I going to present this to students, then I remembered D.A.R.E. and how they would come to our school talking about Just Say No and then I realized that was how I wanted to present my project. From there I just needed my mascot. My line brother would do a painting of Kanye West’s Dropout bear with his own twist. I saw that and thought it was pretty dope so I tweaked my version and Louie was born. Louie is short for Louisiana and I added the bear similar

to Smokey the Bear since I wanted Louie to be public service figure as well.

Two years later The Louie Bear Project is an official Louisiana nonprofit. Just last year The Louie Bear Project was awarded the Health Community Grant awarded by Keep Louisiana Beautiful but due to the lack of recycling resources in the area, the grant was withdrawn. Currently we are looking to partner with area schools and groups to bring more awareness to our platform. Grambition: That’s dope. Being that many are either unaware or don’t care about recycling, what are some future plans you have for the Louie Bear Project?

CD: My future plans for The Louie Bear Project include; hosting an annual Back 2 School Drive in the G and statewide, visiting schools throughout the state raising awareness, hosting community clean up events, and updating area parks that have seen better days. The Louie Bear Project is a dope concept. It’s even better that it is headed by one of Grambling’s own. You want to get down with something so positive or find out more information about this blossoming project, visit one of Louie Bear’s social media pages or hit him by email. #GRAMbition @louiebearproject

THE MORE YOU KNOW The Fight, Facts, and Factors of Breast Cancer Awareness.

T

he little pink ribbon symbolizing the fight against Breast Cancer has found its way into so many facets of society. Breast Cancer is a disease that affects both the body and mind. Beyond the obvious stress of being diagnosed and needing various treatments, you may experience physical, mental, and emotional changes you weren’t expecting. Prompt and accurate diagnosis of Breast Cancer is one of the most crucial elements needed to successfully fight the disease. The exact cause of Breast Cancer isn’t entirely clear. There are biological and environmental risk factors in developing breast cancer. Often it’s a mix between these things that puts someone at greater risk. Some of those risk factors are • Gender/ Age – Being a woman, and over 55 years of age.

• Heredity & Genetic factors – Having a family history of Breast & Ovarian Cancer.

• Environmental factors such as early menopause, early/extended menstrual periods. • Engaging a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, being overweight or obese.

• Frequently consuming alcoholic beverages, regularly smoking tobacco. • Radiation therapy to the chest before 30 years of age. • Taking certain hormones for menopause.

Over 74% of Breast Cancers are diagnosed in women with no identifiable risk factors. It’s been reported that more than 200,000 cases in the U.S. per year, and death rates are higher than those for any other cancer besides lung cancer. Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. Currently in 2017 it is estimated that about 30% of newly diagnosed

cancers in women is Breast Cancer.

Male Breast Cancer is a rare cancer in males that originates from the breast. Many males with Breast Cancer have inherited a BRCA mutation but all other causes including some of the common risk factors as mentioned above alcohol abuse and exposure to certain hormones and lionizing radiation. There are significant differences between male and female Breast Cancer. Lesions are easier to find in men due to the smaller breast size, however lack of awareness may postpone seeking medical attention. The diagnosis is made later in males typically at the age of 67 on average rather females with their average at 63. Almost half of male Breast Cancer patients are stage 3 or stage 4. With the relative infrequency of male breast cancer, randomized studies are lacking. About 1% of Breast Cancer developed in males estimated at about 2,140 new cases diagnosed annually in the U.S. The number of annual deaths in the U.S. is 440. Majority of Breast Cancer cases will require the patient to undergo a surgical procedure to remove the cancer from the breast. A lumpectomy is a breast conserving surgery utilizing the removal of a tumor from the breast along with small amount of tissue surrounding the tumor (unlike Mastectomy which may be removal of the entire breast). Patients who undergo a lumpectomy may also have some of the lymph nodes under arm removed at the same time. In certain cases, the lymph nodes may be removed in a separate procedure. Once removed the lymph nodes are biopsied (dissected and examine under a microscope) to determine whether they contain cancer cells. Breast Cancer doesn’t kill you; the disease becomes deadly when it metastasizes, spreading to the other organs or to the bones which are why lumpectomies are typically performed when cancer is present in the breast but has not begun to spread. The sooner Breast Cancer gets diagnosed, the better your odds of getting a successful treatment for it are. That’s why self-

examinations are extremely important, its good know how your breasts normally look and feels, making it easier to spot any changes. Educate yourself on the proper way to complete your own selfexams. Adult women of all ages are encouraged to perform breast exams at least once a month. Examples for finding symptoms including discovering a lump in your breast, thickening of the breast tissue (size and shape changes in breast), unusual or bloody discharge from the nipple areas, or skin changes around your breast (newly inverted nipples). Medical experts have different recommendations when it comes to personal decisions involving mammography and imaging tests. Most women don’t start having mammograms until they’re at least 40, but if you are at higher risk for Breast Cancer your doctor may want you to start at a younger age. The American Cancer Society recommends yearly screening mammograms starting at age 45, but as mentioned above if at a high risk the age factor changes. The diagnosis and treatment of anyone is almost certain to have a major impact on not only the person diagnosed, but also on the ones closest to them. How well they adjust can influence how the person diagnosed copes during this time so it’s best to be positive remaining as a support system for your loved one going through this process. “From personal experiences my mother, and three of my aunties dear to me has been affected by the diagnosis of Breast Cancer, so this has become a very crucial element to me throughout my life, also my entire family.” From this I have learned the importance of my medical family history and the severity of this disease with the conclusion that the people affected by Breast Cancer are very special indeed. My opinion, they are the strongest individuals every known.

K

endale and I met at church through the choir. Even though we were both dating other people, we worshiped together and later began hanging out. I distinctly remember after Kendale was in our church’s fashion show, that our group of friends started doing things together. He was attending McNeese State University at the time and was a tight end on the football team. After both of our relationships had ended, we became better friends and did more together. My friends had returned to college in New Orleans and that gave me more time to spend with him. I started going to see him play football, I was a basketball fan but thought it would be nice to support him anyway. I’m proud to admit that we made a solid foundation as friends before we even thought about dating. Kendale would come to my house on Sundays for family dinner and whenever he wanted a home cooked meal since he stayed in the dorm. We met each other’s parents and built that comfortable foundation. If you were to ask us both, I think I developed stronger feelings before Kendale did. Although, he began making little gestures, showing that he cared for me as more than just friends. He left after our church’s New Year’s Eve service, we both sang on the praise team, to go home in New Iberia. When he came back he gave me a hug and told me how much he missed me (It was kind of weird). He asked me to be his date for the football banquet on February 8th of 2012. I thought that was special, but it made me nervous that he would ask me to be his “date” to something as personal as the football banquet. A

banquet with all of his guy friends that only knew me as his friend. Throughout the week leading to Valentine’s Day we texted each other constantly. He asked if I had plans for Valentine’s Day and of course I didn’t, so we went on with our day as normal. On Valentine’s Day 2012 my entire family was at our house which I thought was a little odd but I didn’t put too much thought into it. My niece came to me and told me that as she passed my car and she noticed that my side mirror was broken. I immediately got up and went outside trying to remember if someone had side swiped me. When I looked at my car I noticed a dozen roses on the top of the car, a single rose on the back and I opened the car and saw a huge teddy bear in the driver’s seat. It seems like Kendale had sprayed an entire bottle of his cologne on that poor bear. There were hand written notes all over the car, some funny, some enduring, as I opened the trunk I found a pair of white Air Force Ones and a pack of white and black Nike socks. When I later asked him why he gave me this, he said because I didn’t own a real pair tennis shoes and he wanted to buy me my first pair. I got back around to the front seat and found another note that he had drawn a blue bear on, that was the nick-name I had given him. This note was more serious and as I read it I began to tear up. When I looked up, Kendale was walking out of the pool gate towards me in his white wife beater and shorts looking like Baby Boy. I must admit, he was looking real fine! He came over, gave me a big hug and asked me to be his girlfriend. This is the beginning of our love story and we’ve been inseparable ever since.

For my 25th birthday, Kendale planned a surprise birthday party! He told me to meet him at my parents’ house where he blindfolded me and asked if I trusted him. Of course, the response was a yes! He took me on a long ride that had a few bumps along the way (he hit a curb lol). When we arrived at our destination, Kendale took me by the hand and walked me into a building where many of family members and friends waited. Once he took the blindfold off and I greeted everyone with a surprised smile, then the real festivities began. Under the impression that this was just a surprise birthday party, I didn’t think anything of it when Kendale asked me if I wanted to dance. From there the DJ begin to play the song I told Kendale that I would love to be our wedding song, “This is Why I Love You” by Major. As we danced, Kendale asked me if I remembered telling him that I wanted that song to be our wedding song. Of course I remembered! The next thing I knew, Kendale was on one knee and he proposed! To this day there is still debate whether I actually said yes before taking the ring! It seems like February 17, 2018 can’t come fast enough for us to really start our lives together as we become one! Billboardgang // Magazine

DARYL “CHILL” MITCHELL

THE “THINKING” IS THE MASTER PLAN By Diann Lewis-Charles

“Starting from 0 you give it all you got to reach the top so you can sit back at the chalkboard and plan a strategy which yo head in your hand and you pray ……. sit back clear your thoughts and put your mind to work …... It’s not how you feel, it’s how you think in society. In due time it will come, patience is a virtue……... Here it comes, I told you so. AMEN.” (Starting From Zero, Groove B. Chill)

D

aryl “Chill” Mitchell of House Party fame and current star of NCIS New Orleans knows a thing or 2 about strategizing a master plan. In November 2001, a simple test drive on his nephew’s motorcycle changed his life forever. As a result of hitting loose gravel, the bike ride ended with him landing in a ditch for approximately 20-30 minutes, contemplating the status of his legs, telling them to move and wondering how he was going to support his family. Not willing to surrender to defeat, Mitchell trivialized the incident as, “just another thing”, no time for being a victim of circumstance and no pity parties allowed, chalking up that very moment as the new chapter in his book of life entitled, “master strategist”. Shortly after hospital release, master plan in action, he was back on set, “healing as he worked”. During a recent New Orleans onset interview, Mr. Mitchell light hearted and fun loving, kindly shared a few of his rules of how to deal with life’s lessons while strategically shaping your mind for success.

RULE #1

You are strong. (Eliminate) the woe is me (attitude). (Always remember) “You are here because of your strength.”

RULE #2

Don’t look at things as if…..

“I’ve never looked at things as if. I (think instead) it’s going to be, it will be, it has to be.”

RULE #3

Visualize “When I was 7 years old, ….my family, we use to go to the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall and I use to see (visualize) my whole family on stage performing live. At the end of the day, if all of us didn’t make it, one of

18

Billboardgang // Magazine

Photo credit: Gordon Lonsdale us made it because I saw us all on stage. We all didn’t make it, but one of us made it because I visualized, I saw myself on that stage, we all didn’t make it, but I did.

RULE #4

Inspire Others “A lot of times, I have a lot of other actors that’s coming up in the game and I just try to inspire them. A lot of times, I meet people around the world that’s interested…..new in the game of acting. What I do is try to inspire them and that’s the main thing that helps keep me going…. is trying to help the next ones coming up.”

RULE #5

Family Matters “I love my children and sometimes I feel I shortchanged my children (due to the accident). My children told me, Daddy we will never be shortchanged because whatever we did you was always there and whatever we needed instructions with, throwing a ball, running a ball, wrestling, football, regardless of whether you could show us or not you was always there. Even though they (my kids) tell me that….it still makes me feel like I wish I could have thrown that ball with them you know what I mean? But they are like...no, we just need you to be there. That makes a big difference. I just want to be there for my children.”

“My children kept me alive, if it wasn’t for them, I probably would have gave up.”

RULE #6

(Remember) Your story is far from over. “You’ve got a long story to tell from here. The story that I am telling is a lifelong story, not a half story. I’m evolving everyday. I’m learning everyday. It’s been 15 years since the accident (and, I’m still telling my story).” Daryl “Chill” Mitchell is an advocate for actors with disabilities. He is also the founder of the Daryl Mitchell Foundation. The Foundation serves to prompt awareness regarding spinal cord injuries.

Be sure to catch Mr. Mitchell as “Patton Plame” on the Fall season premiere of NCIS New Orleans, Tuesday September 26 10/9 c. Follow him on social media: Twitter @darylchillmitch and Instagram @ darylchillmitchell Diann Lewis-Charles, a native Texan is an entertainment host for Day Time Prime Time, playwright “Mr. Wrong”, author of soon to be released novel “Cornbread, Mustard Greens and Sweet Potato Pie”, poet (Kingdom Poetry), blogger and coordinator/ member of FAB- The Alliance of Fashion and Beauty Professionals, Inc.

INDIVIDUAL VS. EMPLOYER LIFE INSURANCE COMPARISON

Almost 70 percent of employees have access to life insurance through work, and 80 percent of those employees take advantage of this benefit, according to LIMRA, an insurance industry research organization based in Windsor, Connecticut. Half of U.S. workers have the option to purchase supplemental life insurance policies through their employer, and about 50 percent of this group buy it.1

I

f you only have a life insurance policy through work, however, you may not have nearly enough coverage. You also risk losing your insurance and paying higher premiums than you might need to. So you may want to consider an individual term life insurance policy even if you have access to life insurance through work.

Employer Life Insurance Benefits Aren’t Guaranteed

When someone else — the company you work for — is subsidizing your coverage, you have less control over it than you might want over something as important as life insurance.

Group plans can be changed, reduced, or dropped. The coverage often isn’t portable if you change jobs or get laid off. And these aren’t the only uncertainties that come with group coverage. For example, the cost of group coverage – the premiums you pay – is not guaranteed and the annual cost may increase over time. Like health insurance, you don’t want to go without a life insurance policy for any period of time because you never know when you might need it.

You Might Not Get the Best Policy Rate

According to LIMRA, most people think life insurance costs more than it really does, some over estimate the cost by as much as double the actual premium¹. Factors that affect your life insurance premiums include age, health, driving record, and credit history. If you’re in very good health, you may receive a

preferred rate on an individual policy. Group policies, by contrast, are not underwritten and do not exclude anyone, so they may be much more expensive. If you qualify as preferred or preferred plus, you may be able to buy an individual term life insurance policy that has several times the death benefit as your group coverage for the same annual cost. If you have significant health issues, however — maybe you have diabetes or are a cancer survivor — a group policy may be your only option as Group policies offer coverage to those who may otherwise be uninsurable.

Benefits of a Group Life Insurance Policy May Be Limited

Many group policies offer small benefits of $25,000 to $100,000. Typical group life insurance coverage through a company offers a benefit of one times your salary, with the option to buy more. While that’s better than nothing, it might not be sufficient to protect your family. Such a low death benefit won’t come close to replacing the income you would have likely earned over a full career.

While you may be able to purchase a limited amount of additional coverage that you pay for out of pocket beyond what your employer offers as a free benefit, for a total of three to four times your annual salary, total coverage still might not be nearly enough, especially if you are supporting a family. If you’re single, however, or if you’re married but your spouse works too and you don’t have or plan to have kids, that

benefit might be sufficient.

Speaking of spouses, if you insure your spouse through your employer’s life insurance, he or she may be underinsured, too. If your spouse stays home with the kids, for example, how much money would it take to pay someone to replace them as a caregiver until the kids are grown so you can continue to work?

Individual life insurance can be a great complement to or substitute for any life insurance you’re eligible for through work. It’s a bit more trouble to apply, since you’ll have to go through medical underwriting, but it’s the best way to make sure you have as much coverage as you need, to lock in your premiums, and to make sure you’re still covered even if you stop working for your current company 1¹LIMRA, “Facts from LIMRA: Life Insurance Awareness Month,” September 2015.
