RISP AIR, fresh foliage, the occasional scent of a campfire. Leaves bursting with green, reds and golds. Laughter in the distance. Now close your eyes and picture yourself with a stick in your hand. Are you roasting marshmallows or hiking through a wooded trail? Perhaps you’re about to play fetch with your dog. Simple fun, simple times, simply camping in New Jersey. In the Garden State, nature is up close and personal. Camp in our tall mountains or close to our sandy shore; bring your tent, RV, or glamp it up and stay in a fully-stocked cabin. Bring your family, call up your friends and pick the spot that most excites you. You can take your pick because New Jersey has nearly 100 campgrounds, each with its own personality; just like you. Our guidebook will take you on a journey through the state of New Jersey, region by region. In each section, you’ll find things to do, great photos, and campground listings filled with the details you need to know, including contact information and rates. Inside this year, you’ll also find stories on celebrating your wedding at a campground, international campers, and bringing your corporate event back to nature by hosting it at a campground. We hope this guide helps you make the most of your next camping adventure. Happy Trails! Dave Benn- President, NJCOA

RICHARD DENMAN Pleasant Acres Farm Campground
VER TRY to catch a pig on the loose? How about squeezing milk from a cow? Campgrounds in New Jersey offer tons of experiences, but at Pleasant Acres Farm Campground in Sussex, visitors experience what it’s like to work on an actual farm. Richard Denman built the campground with his parents and siblings and purchased it when his parents retired in 1986. Richard is our very first New Jersey Campground Owner’s Association member to be featured in our new Member Spotlight. We caught up with him in between his daily campground chores and his aerobatic flying. Yes, we said aerobatic. NJCOA: When did your campground open? Richard Denman (RD): Pleasant Acres Farm Campground opened for business in 1972. After being a dairy farmer for many years, my father came up with the idea of sharing our wholesome way of life with people who would otherwise never have the chance to experience farm and country living. We built our campground as a family, and we all pitched in to make it come together. I purchased the business from my parents when they retired in 1986. My brothers and my sister all still work here at the campground. Altogether, there have been five generations of our family helping to share the vision that my parents had so many years ago. NJCOA: What’s your favorite thing about being a campground owner? RD: The best part of working at a campground like Pleasant Acres is seeing the joy on people’s faces as they experience the many unique activities we have to offer. The awe of feeling a team of real draft horses pulling you in a wagon full of hay, the amazement of actually squeezing milk from a cow, and the sheer joy of catching a real pig running loose in a field; those are things that I get to relive all summer long as generation after generation discovers the joys of camping on a real working farm. NJCOA: How did you get involved with flying? RD: I started flying when I was 18 and got my very first airplane in 1983. It was a 1956 Piper Tri-Pacer. I was quite fortunate to

have a very generous friend back then, who helped me get started in flying. His name was Sylvester, but we all called him Joe. He ran the engine shop at Sussex Airport, and I used to stop and visit every week, just to see the airplanes he was working on. One day, as he worked away, he casually said, “You should buy that Tri-Pacer down at the end. It’s only $6,000 and I can help you fix it up.” I said, “I don’t have $6,000.” To which he replied, “Well, I’ll be your partner.” When I told him I only had $2,000, he looked at me over his glasses and said, “So, I’ll be 2/3 partner and you’ll be 1/3 partner.” With Joe’s help, I rebuilt everything on that airplane. I learned to fly in it and was eventually able to buy him out. He never flew the airplane; he just wanted me to have it. NJCOA: Was there a pilot who inspired you at 18? RD: I went to see the local airshow at Sussex Airport. One of the local pilots just happened to be Leo Loudenslager, who had won the national aerobatic championships seven times and took the world champion title in 1980. His flights inspired me; there wasn’t anything he couldn’t do with that airplane. He was my hero, and I always dreamed of
flying like he did. He was the reason I wanted to fly; I wanted to do aerobatics. NJCOA: Wait - you do aerobatics in your plane?! RD: Every weekend, weather permitting, campers at Pleasant Acres Campground are given a free air show without having to leave their campsite. My tricks include loops, rolls, inverted flight, Immelmans, Cuban eights, spins and snap rolls. All with the smoke on for full effect. I love flying, but my biggest joy, and my greatest reward is hearing how much everyone enjoys watching me fly. NJCOA: What type of plane do you fly? RD: The airplane Leo built and flew in the championship, was the model for an aerobatic airplane called an Extra. To me, it is the ultimate airplane, and I feel extremely fortunate to own one. One of the first things I did when I learned to fly the Extra, was to recreate the autographed picture of Leo and his plane vertical in the sky that he had given to me when I was young.

NJ Fishing & Crabbing Rules & Regulations LICENSES Anyone age 16 and older must have a valid license (see Exemptions) to fish the fresh waters of New Jersey with handline, rod and line, or longbow and arrow. This includes privately-owned lakes and other waters. Fishing licenses may be obtained from license agents or online. Duplicate licenses for the current year are also available. New Jersey does not require a general saltwater fishing license for recreational surf casting, deep sea or bay fishing. However, New Jersey saltwater anglers must register with the New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry Program. Also, there is a variety of required licenses and permits for crabbing, clamming and commercial saltwater fishing issued by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife’s Bureau of Marine Fisheries. A clamming license is now called a shellfish license and is required for harvesting of all species of benthic mollusks (with the exception of conchs) including, but not limited to, hard and soft clams, surf clams, oysters, bay scallops and mussels. Licenses are available at shellfish license agent and online. EXEMPTIONS Anglers Under 16 - No fishing license is required of persons under 16 years old. NJ Residents Age 70 and Over - A driver’s license or other acceptable proof of age containing date of birth and physical description will function as the actual fishing license for New Jersey residents 70 and over. No application fee is required, no registration with the Division of Fish and Wildlife is required and no license will be issued. Trout stamps are not required. CRABBING Single hand lines and collapsible traps do not require a license. Crabs taken with a recreational license may not be sold or used for barter. The maximum harvest and/or possession limit of crabs is one bushel a day. All organisms other than crabs and conchs shall be immediately released. All female crabs having eggs or spawn attached shall be immediately released. Crab pots and trot lines may be tended only from 4am - 9pm prevailing time, in Delaware Bay and 24 hours a day in all other waters. All crab pots must be checked and emptied of all crabs and other organisms at least once every 72 hours. Minimum size for harvesting: peeler or shedder crabs - 3 inches; soft crabs - 3.5 inches and hard crabs - 4.5 inches. All measurements are from point to point. Please visit state.nj.us for more information.

About this Area THERE IS SO much history steeped in the Delaware River Region - and we’re not talking boring textbook stuff here. There is war, romance, power, revolution, and stories of survival. On the USS New Jersey battleship you can board the enormous vessel, climb through its levels (on very steep ladders), touch, feel and experience what life was like for a sailor on that ship. At the new Roebling Museum, you can learn how one man changed several industries by inventing the wire rope. It’s engineering genius right in front of your eyes. Apart from history, this region is filled with arts and culture for all ages. Shopping? Try the Columbus Farmers market - there are up to 1,700 outdoor stands. People have been visiting the Delaware River Region since the 1600s. How will you make your impression on the area?

Roebling, the wire rope industry he founded, and the company town of Roebling, New Jersey. The exhibitions explore the many facets of the Roebling story including: the family, Roebling businesses and products, engineering marvels such as the Brooklyn Bridge, steel and wire rope
production and the immigrant story as told by the personal stories of the workers who lived in the model company town of Roebling. The Roebling Story is a classic American tale of immigration, innovation, hard work, and entrepreneurship. The Roeblings designed and built or erected the cables for several of the world’s greatest suspension bridges, including the Brooklyn Bridge, the George Washington Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge. Roebling wire rope helped make possible some of the most important technological achievements of the industrial age: telegraphs and telephones, electrification, deep mines and big ships, elevators and airplanes. 609-499-7200 www.roeblingmuseum.org/ Drumthwacket Governor’s Mansion. 609-683-0057 • www.drumthwacket.org Camden Children’s Garden Storybook and butterfly gardens and much more. 856-365-8733 • www.camdenchildrensgarden.org Fort Mott Catch the Ferry “Delafort” for a visit to two other forts on the Delaware. 856-935-3218 Howell Living History Farm Learn about farming. The Greater Atlantic City Region
A GREATER ATLANTIC CITY REGION
Visit, Explore, Play, Do AC
The Walk is lined with terrific shops and restaurants
About this Area IF YOU THINK OF casinos as the only entertainment option in the Atlantic City region, you’re in for a great surprise. While our casinos offer tons of awesome gaming, world-class entertainment and fabulous eateries, there is a whole other world of things to do in AC. Of course, you could hit the beach, take a dip in the Atlantic, or stroll the famous Boardwalk. But maybe you’re in the mood to ride a horse through a trail. Or perhaps you are ready to climb to the top of the third tallest lighthouse in America (that would be the beautiful Absecon Lighthouse). You can find historical museums, wineries, amusement parks, and great shopping. Explore nature, spin the roulette wheel, see live performances, and sip wine in a local vineyard. This is AC.

S SOUTHERN SHORE REGION
Spend the Day in Sun, Surf, and Sand
Cameron Wildlife Sanctuary offers outdoor fun all year long
About this Area NEW JERSEY’S SOUTHERN shore hits you like a breath of fresh air as soon as you step foot on its land. Its natural beauty abounds and it’s hard not to spend every minute here trying to spot a bald eagle, a momma osprey, or a great blue heron. Cape May is the birding capital of the world, after all, so if it’s a rare bird sighting you’re after, head to exit zero. For fun, thrills, competition and prime people watching, head to either Ocean City or Wildwood to ride the rides, eat the pizza and play mini golf. Seeking culture on your vacay? Take in a live performance; there are theatre companies throughout the region as well as a performing arts center. Or just grab your favorite book, your beach chair and take the short walk to the sand. Let the ocean say hello.

Host Your Corporate Event at a New Jersey Campground
W
ANT TO get away from fluorescent lights, stale air, and the ordinary day-to-day grind? Host your next corporate event at a New Jersey campground. It’s a simple way to break free from the typical and head towards the extraordinary. Imagine sitting with your employees or co-workers around a blazing campfire toasting marshmallows to be slipped in between graham crackers loaded with chocolate. This could be how you spend your next meeting. Sounds much better than a stuffy square room, doesn’t it? In an article from May 2014 in Entrepreneur.com, author Lisa Evans said, “trapping ourselves indoors has created what health experts call a “nature deficit disorder” – depression or anxiety resulting from too little time spent outside. Getting outdoors can do great things for your health. Reducing stress, lowering blood pressure and improving immune function are among nature’s health benefits. What’s more, incorporating elements of nature into your workday can also give your brain a boost, resulting in increased productivity, focus and creativity.” We all know the benefits of being exposed to nature and fresh, clean air, but did you know how easy it is to be among nature at a New Jersey campground? There are just about 100 campgrounds throughout the Garden State. Chances are, no matter what part you call home, a campground will be nearby. Amenities vary with each Campground and/or RV Park but all have open land brimming with the peaceful offerings of Mother Nature. For a corporate retreat, there is no better way to connect with your coworkers than by bunking in adjacent tents or cabins. Have a cook out, do some dancing, make a craft. Go on a hike, explore the wilderness... the possibilities for a bonding experience are endless. If it’s a party your company is having, let a New Jersey campground be your host. Many have rec halls with full capabilities, and more than enough space. When you bring your staff together at a campground in New Jersey, you are thinking outside the box, creating memories and bonds that won’t be dimmed by future fluorescent lights. Call a campground today to book your next corporate event or outing.

Celebrate Your Wedding at a New Jersey Campground
W
Newlyweds Debbie and Paul Wielhouwer
A lovely wooded setting for your wedding
HAT’S one of the freshest trends to hit the wedding industry in the last few years? If you guessed campground weddings... you’re right. Outdoor ceremonies have been popular for scores of years, but bringing the outdoor fun to your favorite campground has begun to really gain popularity in the last year. Think about it - campgrounds are home to some of the most beautiful grounds in the entire state, many have lush foliage, big shade trees, large halls to accommodate a lot of people, and facilities made for fun. They are a natural, smart choice for today’s brides. And the possibilities are endless. Maybe you’d like a small, fireside ceremony with your closest friends and family? Or is a three-day weekend glamping bash more your style? At New Jersey campgrounds, you can go as big or intimate as you want. Imagine guests sitting in white chairs in front of a gorgeous lake or in the middle of a tall tree-lined setting. These same guests will later be laughing as they roast marshmallows together or dance under the starry sky. When your guests are staying the night, the party is endless. At Holly Shores Camping Resort in the Southern Shore region, brides can have both their weddings and rehearsal dinner and the newly married couple can stay in the “honeymoon suite” overlooking a vineyard. For newlyweds Debbie and Paul Wielhouwer, Kymer’s Camping Resort in Northwest New Jersey was the setting for their fun, casual wedding. “Everyone had a great time. It was nice to be amongst our camping friends, our camping family and our family. People got to see what camping really is like. A lot of people stayed overnight, and some just came for the day. We rented tents and tables and chairs, we had a caterer cook on site,” said Debbie. “We had 200 people and a campfire in an adjacent field.” Debbie made up little s’more packets for her guests to roast by the fire. There are tons of ideas like that one to really bring your personality into your big day and create a fun, festive atmosphere for your family and friends. Campgrounds offer an affordable option for today’s brides and grooms. In New Jersey, there is always a campground nearby. Say your “I Do’s” by the lake, in the open acres, or under the wooded sky. It’ll be a party to remember. Call a New Jersey campground today for details and availability.

New Jersey Welcomes International Campers
ID YOU know you can travel internationally in just about six hours? That’s right, from our great state, you can head north and visit our neighbors in Canada within a half day drive. And the same goes for Canadians. New Jersey campgrounds welcomes not only our neighbors to the north, but all international travelers to visit our sites, stay in our gorgeous wooded settings, lay on our silky sandy beaches and swim in our ocean and lakes. Since New Jersey is home to nearly 100 campgrounds, campers from Germany, Belgium, South America - anywhere around the world - can visit several times a year, for many years to come and have a new experience each time. Frontier Campground owner George Reagan takes pride in welcoming Canadian visitors. “I think our international campers appreciate that we speak French,” he said. Spanish is also spoken at Frontier. If you’re traveling to New Jersey from another country, you will find friendly staff ready to help and accommodate your needs. All you need is your passport and your spirit of adventure.

One of America’s Top Cultural Hotspots
Canoeing through the marsh
About this Area THIS IS YOUR GATEWAY to fun. This is your gateway to adventure. This is your gateway to experience rich culture. The Gateway Region may be neighbors with one of the best cities in the world, but it stands on its own when it comes to things to do. When’s the last time you came face to face with a mastodon? It’s hot breath in your face, making you sweat? Okay, perhaps we’re using our imagination a bit, but that’s the best kind of fun when you’re exploring a museum. Gateway has many museums for whatever piques your interest, be it science, aviation, history or art. Walk amongst butterflies, take a tour of a submarine, see a Jets or Giants game, or simply stroll through the woods. This is your Gateway.
