ABOUT US ::

Esse-ci was founded in 1984 from the idea of a group of entrepreneurs in the engineering field and technical design to combine all their experience in a rapidly growing field: lighting. The skills they had acquired in the 80s meant they were fully able to face up to the challenges of the next decade, when this field developed rapidly and considerable changes were introduced into lighting systems. At the same time different types appeared with an increased need for technical lighting, which the company promptly responded to with increasingly complex solutions through a total coordinated planning and design service. Here the strategy of ESSE-CI was to specialise in interior technical lighting, especially fluorescent lights, a choice that led to great brand distinction for a highly specialised quality product. Half way through the 90s, the management realised

the potential offered by producing increasingly specialised products for different lighting needs; in fact ESSE-CI was among the first to accept the concept of soft light but there was also the need to formalise the change process so that it could be repeated in the future. The recent introduction of innovative production systems together with intense and coordinated work of the whole firm has meant the current range has been extended and improved even further, with new â&#x20AC;&#x153;lighting conceptsâ&#x20AC;? which will characterise even further the ESSE-CI brand. In 2002 the company was one of the first in Italy to extend its Quality System Certification to VISION 2000. The Esse-ci sales network now covers the whole of Italy and abroad. We have distributors and agents in throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

ESSE-CI products are based on decadesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; of technical experience and they stand out for the carefully studied details, quality materials and precision mechanisms. Right from the initial design phases, the team working on the new product pays special attention to industrialisation details so that the products fully respond to the installation requirements and budget price. A multirole fixture on its uniqueness, which can be adapted to the different modern design needs. The exclusive body, completely realized in methacrilate with high pigmentation, underlines an homogeneous light never realized before and avoid the reading of the internal light source, while ensuring an high light efficiency. The closing headers and the joint accessories are also realized in methacrilate and use a fixing system with invisible graft, guaranteeing an amazing homogeneity of the entire fixture also when installed in

Thanks to the different peripheral elements for the light flow control, Flag system can be used even when very difficult visual tasks are involved. The shaped body is made from extruded aluminium. ARCHITECTURAL :: RECESSED DESIGN ::

Skylight is the perfect design for light open to the ceiling. The slightly recessed profile with respect to the ceiling clearly recalls the minimalist design. The recessed body is painted steel plate. The antistatic acrylic diffuser has an opaque surface and guarantees maximum and even lighting over the entire surface. It is installed in a painted extruded aluminium frame. The diffuser is fixed to the lamp body by springs and has a safety device against falling with hinge opening for maintenance work.

It is fixed to the false ceiling by special brackets or directly on lay in. Standard wiring is 230-240V / 50-60Hz, high frequency electronic type with a power factor > 0.95. DYNAMIC LIGHT :: // Description. Dynamic light: the scientific bases

Certain studies by leading institutes have recently analysed the effects of photo-exposure on human biological cycles, which have shown how light has a fundamental role in regulating human behaviour, in particular the sleep/waking cycle, attention levels and certain forms of seasonal depression (SAD). On the basis of other pilot studies, it has been shown that productivity at work is also effected by the quality of life. While natural light correctly stimulates the human â&#x20AC;&#x17E;biological clockâ&#x20AC;&#x153;, artificial lighting needs certain levels of intensity, wave frequency and life. The need to replicate the ideal lighting conditions that respect human biorhythms is a basic requirement to improve the normal work environment.

There is total asymmetry between visual performance and melatonin inhibition, as the graph alongside shows. The percentage data is put on a plane with a logarithmic scale relative to improved visual performance and melatonin suppression (which means improved waking state) as lighting increases. With 100 lux using the RPV test, which measures the speed, and care in processing alphanumeric tests with high contrast levels, an average person reaches 100% of his or her efficiency. However melatonin inhibition needs much higher levels. Normal lighting appliances and lamps concentrate on helping carry out visual tasks, which represents a clear limit to pursuing physiological well-being. Skylight uses variable light technology and thanks to the special dimmer programs helps normal fulfilment of circadian cycles.

Skylight Dynamic is a Dali based management system. Through a simply and refined control system, the different warm and cool light temperatures can be dimmed together to obtain different combinations that change during the day. The small sizes and the low number of necessary components, make easy to apply the dynamic light at the redevelopment of rooms lacking of natural light, and it also allows to realize custom programming, according to the needs of the different users. These innovations seek to enhance performance and comfort above and beyond the traditional static â&#x20AC;&#x153;on-offâ&#x20AC;? model that has been pursued until now. Departing from these considerations is the use of effective regulation systems in analogue 1-10V or *Dali digital technology that are capable of uniting comfort and performance to produce real benefits, both in economic terms and in saving energy, such as lamps with greater duration

and less energy consumption, adjusted to obtain the accurate level of illumination. The increase of automation level reduces the need for human intervention in producing the accurate, needed quantity of light. Solutions with analogue 1-10V or Dali digital technology are capable of offering concrete advantages in all aspects, especially from an economic point of view based on the needs of the client. DEFINITIONS Light flow and lighting efficiency The light flow is the amount of light given off by a light source in an arc of time. The unit of measure is a lumen (lm). Light intensity, luminance and illumination Two fundamental measurements are given by the light flow: illumination and lighting intensity, which should be explained to prevent confusion. Lighting intensity (I), is expressed in candles (cd), measures the amount of flow in a punctiform light source in a specific direction, no matter what surface or object is being illuminated; illumination however, oriented for technical lighting design and considered by UNI10380 standards, measures the amount of light for unit of surface. Considering that the set unit of measure is lux (lx) and that normally we refer to a surface area of 1m2, the formula is:

Colour temperature The colour temperature of a light source is based on the principle that an incandescent item changes colour as the temperature increases. The theoretic principle this measurement is based on is the â&#x20AC;&#x153;radiating black bodyâ&#x20AC;?. As the temperature increases, the black body gradually changes from red to orange, to yellow, to white to finally reach white-sky blue. This measurement is expressed in Kelvin degrees (K). Chromatic yield The chromatic yield of light source corresponds to the ability to recognise the colours of an exposed item. This need varies with the item: generally it is more marked for multi-coloured items and lower in monochrome items. The chromatic yield indicator (Ra) is a system that has been derived from vision experiments to assess the impact exercised by different light sources on the colour that is perceived of items and surfaces. First of all the colour temperature of the light source must be identified. Secondly, eight sample colours are lit by the lamp being studied, and the results are compared with those of a “black body” which has been taken to the same colour temperature. If none of the samples change chromatically, the light source is recognised an Ra of 100. As the performance worsens a lower mark is granted. Generally speaking, light sources with an Ra equal or higher than 80 are assigned good chromatic yield properties.

Luminance distribution: The luminance distribution in the visual field effects the adaptation level of the eyes and visibility of the task. Correct luminance adaptation helps: visual accuracy, contrast sensitivity, eye function efficiency. For good visual comfort we must avoid: luminance that is too high, high contrasts, luminance and contrasts that are too low. Illumination: Illumination for the various visual tasks as given in the tables, refers to the area covered by the visual task and not all the room or other areas (for example in an office, the visual tasks area corresponds with a sheet of A3 paper placed on the desktop). The standard gives two uniformity levels, one for the visual task and the other for the surrounding area. Glare A new method has been introduced to calculate the glare indicator conforming to the CIE 117 publication. The indicator is called UGR “uniform glare rating” and is calculated using the following formula:

L b - is background luminance cd/m2 calculated with Eind/p, dove Eind is vertical indirect illumination at the observer’s eye level. L - is the luminance of the luminous parts of each appliance in the direction of the observer’s eye in cd/m2. w - Is the solid angle steradian of the luminous parts of each appliance at the observer’s eye level. p - is the Guth position indictor for each appliance connected to the line of sight place. The details on the UGR method are given in the CIE 117 publication. The minimum screening angle is given in the table:

The global maintenance factor used for calculating technical lighting must be chosen by the planner, who must: 1. Declare the maintenance factor and the list of all the hypotheses used to establish the factor. 2. Specify the lighting equipment most suitable for the surroundings. 3. Prepare a complete maintenance program which includes the frequency for changing the light bulbs, the frequency for cleaning the appliances and the room and the cleaning method. The lighting in the workplace where VTU are constantly used must be appropriate for the various visual tasks (reading the screen, typing on the keyboard, reading documents, etc.). The lighting equipment could reflect on the screen, therefore to prevent glare, which can cause tiredness or weakness, the right appliances must be chosen and positioned to prevent heavy glare on the screens. The following table gives the luminance limits for appliances that reflect on the video screen.

The lighting must be designed to prevent stroboscopic effects. Therefore it is best to use D.C. incandescent light bulbs, or discharge or high frequency incandescent light bulbs (around 30000 Hz). The illumination tables are complete and detailed and give the maintained illumination levels, the maximum UGR value, the Ra value and the notes. The last part suggests how to proceed with the controls.

Light colour and light yield The UNI EN 12464-1 standard prescribes a yield as given in the table “colour yield groups and corresponding chromatic yield indicator” as shown in the previous section. In terms of colour, the lamps are divided in three categories: . Colour temperature < 3.300 K (corresponds to a colour of white-warm light). . Colour temperature between 3.300 K and 5.300 K (corresponds to a colour of white-neutral light). . Colour temperature > 5.300 K (corresponds to a white-cold light).
