PARADE PREVIEW:

Welcome to the 2018 Parade of Homes

By TARA CADY • tcady@billingsgazette.com‌

This is the second in a four-part series of the Parade of Homes, brought to you by the Home Builders Association of Billings. For the following two weeks, The Billings Gazette’s Your Home section will feature floor plans, descriptions and photographs of this year’s Parade of Homes selection. For nearly three decades, Billings-area home builders have been developing new residences in neighborhoods across the Magic City for the HBA’s Parade of Homes two-week event. What sets each apart is the craftsmanship reflecting current trends, community needs and plethora local talent. This year’s tour showcases that and more with 11 homes and 10 builders.

Image Builders

To draw a theme from the selection would do each an injustice, but since great builders’ minds think alike, we’ll share some similarities found throughout the Parade:

Granite Peak Builders

Gray is here to stay. Fifty shades or more have found their way on siding, interior walls, carpeting, cabinetry and fixtures. This trendy neutral is simple, modern and balances a home’s overall monochromatic scheme. Warmer tones bring out the rich browns in wood, whereas cooler tones keep the area feeling fresh, clean and sleek. Expect to see a lot of gray wherever there’s a room with four walls and a ceiling.

Cougar Construction

Brown Builders

Cedar and oak are no joke. Cedar’s reds welcome and warm whichever room they reside. Plus, the wood’s aroma is delightful. Oak is more flexible in color and can be a balancing neutral to bolder design elements in the home. Each is featured in the Parade as column posts, flooring and more. Open spaces keep everyone together. An open floor plan encourages congregating in a home’s main areas like the kitchen, dining room and great room. Vaulted ceilings, even if just in the living room, heighten the overall area and keep those cooking smells circulating. Kitchen islands – whether it be one or two – are excellent separators to define each

Everything in its right place. Built-in storage is a must in order to maintain a tidy appearance. Window seats with drawers underneath, hidden rooms and walk-in pantries and closets with built-in shelving are just a few examples to be seen. Go with the flow. Function is the focus of the floor plans. Instead of carrying groceries across the house from the garage to the kitchen or pantry, home design can simplify things. A mudroom between the garage and pantry/kitchen area keeps food in fewer places. Or, skip a few steps with a small door that links the garage to the pantry. Some familiar faces return as featured builders this year – Ban Construction, Brown Builders, Classic Design Homes, Cougar Construction, Image Builders and McCall Homes – alongside a few new ones—Branding Iron Construction, CDW Construction, Customary Designs and Granite Peak Builders. The last 28 years of the Parade have nothing on 2018.

The home at 5335 Canvasback Dr. emanates the modern design work of Image Builders. The first thing that catches the eye is the modern touch of the multi-slanted roofing. Contemporary gray-suede Hardie plank siding is accentuated by a tan and gray stone accent pillar. Large windows adorn the front and side of the home, and oversized cement steps lead to large, red French doors. The grand room opens with an Italian-imported textured melamine fireplace with tile-accent face. LED recessed lighting creates a relaxed glow to illuminate the living area. Just to the right of the entry is the office. Sliding glass doors with wood framing open into a chic work space. Interior windows look out to the living room, creating an exposed concept that isn’t cut off from the rest of the house. The open floor plan invites guests to mingle from living room, dining room and kitchen. Cabinetry throughout the kitchen features the same imported textured melamine on the fireplace, fashioning a cohesive and modern allure. Thermador stainless steel appliances contrast against gold, pendant lamps hanging above the two kitchen islands. Free-floating wooden shelves perched against the gray backsplash are perfect for plants. Sliding glass doors in the dining

room lead to the main floor patio, where guests can take a dip in the pool and have drinks at the built-in bar. After an evening of swimming, warm up next to the fire pit. The main floor also features an impressive master bedroom with an alder wood paneling accent wall and floorto-ceiling windows. Follow the porcelain tile off the master to an enormous en suite featuring a free-standing bathtub; massive, separate shower with a bench; separate toilet access and private glass door with direct access to the hot tub. The en suite includes a substantial walk-in closet with built-in shelving. Of the 5,048-square-foot home, the basement takes up 2,418 square feet. Downstairs provides what can only be described as the ultimate entertainment area. Steel columns course through the layout of the basement creating a contemporary, industrial feel. But the real attention-grabber is the accent wall of graffiti by local artist Tyson Middle of Underground Culture Krew. A wet bar, pool table and massive theater area tops off the incredible space. The basement also features two bedrooms with en suites and plenty of unfinished storage space. Out-of-town guests can stay at the private mother-in-law suite that is attached to the three-car garage. The suite offers private patio access to the

pool, lots of natural light, wood laminate flooring, kitchenette, full bath and walk-in closet. Fun can be functional. This home

isn’t just for entertaining. It calls to those who feel that the place you rest your head should also provide the relaxing sensation of being on vacation.

6628 GOLDEN WILLOW DRIVE • GOLDEN WILLOW

Granite Peak Builders

Countryside Industrial By Charity Dewing • cdewing@billingsgazette.com‌

Granite Peak Builders chose an industrial concept with rustic influences for the home at 6628 Golden Willow Dr. From 66th Street West, the home looks like a factory with its dark metal accents against gray board and batten siding. The entrance leads directly into the great room. The room features a 20foot ceiling with LED lighting and windows that stretch from floor to ceiling on the north and south walls. Shoes, keys, umbrellas and more can be stored in a series of built-in cubbies with individual LED lighting to the right of the entrance. Additional cubbies border an aesthetic, linear fireplace with TV space above. Crisp white paint runs the gamut of the home, contrasting stained-concrete flooring through the main level. The entire home is also equipped with radiant floor heating, which is more efficient than baseboard or gas heat. Of three bedrooms on the main floor, the master takes the left wing of the great room. The spacious bedroom has a glass door to the patio and private hot tub. What seems like

another room is an incredible walkin closet, complete with an island for shoe storage and sitting bench by a window. The en suite features a vanity makeup station; private toilet area; and walk-in shower with two standard showerheads, two rainheads and mosaic white tile. A double sink includes granite countertops and distressed white wood cabinetry to tie in a rustic impression. Black fixtures add to the contemporary feel. The left wing also features a sizable office with closet that can be used as a bedroom. To the right of the great room is the kitchen and dining area. The dining room features a glass door with access to the patio, fire pit and water fountain. The kitchen displays additional rustic appeal with distressed white and smoky blue paint on the cabinets, as well as a charming shiplap ceiling. Two kitchen islands with granite countertops come equipped with LED lighting underneath the ledges. The smaller island is great for meal prep while guests sit at the built-in eating bar at the larger island. Stain-

less steel appliances are also included. The right wing of the house offers two more bedrooms and a bathroom. The design concept suggests one of the bedrooms could function as a TV/ rec room for grandparents and the other as their personal bedroom with connecting Jack-and-Jill bathroom. Off the kitchen is a large butler-style pantry with plenty of storage space. There is also a sizable laundry/mud room. The home features a seven-car garage for recreational vehicles, boats, cars and trucks. Kids can go directly from the garage to the mud room without tracking dirty shoes through the house.

An open-metal staircase with wood beam treads adds sophisticated flair with wire cable railings to incorporate more of an industrial vibe to the home. The top floor is carpeted and includes three more bedrooms and a bathroom. Granite Peak Builders captures quiet country living with contemporary comfort. A lot of home leaves a lot of room for growing families.

6235 TIMBERCOVE DRIVE • IRONWOOD

Cougar Construction

Modern Farmhouse Massiveness By Tara Cady • tcady@billingsgazette.com‌

Despite its traditional look, there’s nothing old-fashioned about the modern farmhouse at 6235 Timbercove Dr. The newest addition to the Ironwood subdivision by Cougar Construction takes up three lots, or one acre. Centered in the middle of the property is the three-level home with white siding, black-framed windows and columns with brick at its base. From the outside, the home’s whopping 8,265 square feet reveals its massiveness with a 1,650-square-foot fourcar garage. But inside past the entrance is a floor-to-ceiling fireplace and vaulted 20-foot shiplap ceiling that really shows its size. An open floor concept keeps activity centered in the great room, dining area and kitchen. Opposite the hearth in the great room is the kitchen, with stone countertops, white cabinetry on the perimeter and black cabinetry on the island. Between the kitchen and great room is an area for dining, with sliding doors leading to the expansive back patio. Built-in storage is commonplace throughout the home; the great room includes shelving at either side of the hearth as well as in drawers below the fireplace. A desk extends the white kitchen cabinetry as a place for doing paperwork. Past the kitchen is a powder room with hexagon tile flooring, a laundry room and a mudroom leading to the basement.

Beside the front entrance is a room to be used for an office, a piano or an additional bedroom. In total, the home features eight carpeted rooms that could be bedrooms. All have walk-in closets with some larger than others. Directly behind the great room fireplace is a smaller one in the master bedroom. Also included in the suite is a door to the patio, where a portion is closed off for a private third – but outdoor – fireplace. The adjoining master bathroom features tile that looks like white marble. His and her sinks, a free-standing tub and walk-in shower round out the room. Beyond it is a walk-in closet whose transom windows allow for ample natural light. Oak stairs, which match most of the main level’s flooring, define a corner of the great room. They lead to the second level, where a loft overlooks the main living area. Another built-in desk rests on the loft as a homework station. His and her bathrooms and bedrooms are at opposite sides of the study. To the north are two bedrooms with walk-in closets; a small, secondary laundry room; and full bathroom. The boys’ facilities feature two sinks resting atop a wood table with storage below. To the south are two more bedrooms; one is considered a bonus room, and has a ceiling that slants with the roof. Each have a recessed wall with a storage bench and window, ideal for reading

while seeing the neighborhood from a bird’s perspective. One of the boys’ bedrooms also has this feature, but instead with views of the Rimrocks. The girls’ bathroom is less rustic and more chic than the boys’, with goldframed round mirrors, white subway tile around the shower tub and crosshatch tile flooring. From the great room is also access to the basement. At 2,666 square feet, its spaciousness is felt immediately in the downstairs family room. One wall is dedicated to a projector screen with cabinetry and shelving surrounding it. Technology for the home theater is stored just behind the screen in a bedroom closet. With eight zones, audio is linked to not only the family room, but the great room, master bedroom and bathroom, garage, back patio, kitchen and front entry room on the main level. A second basement-level bedroom is nearby with a full bathroom between the two. The basement family room has a similar open floor concept to the main level, spanning the same square-foot-

age sans a vaulted ceiling. Opposite the projector screen is a kitchenette and dining space. One portion of a wall is deeper to fit a life-size Scrabble board. The fun and games continue past the kitchenette with a playhouse under the stairs as well as an exercise room with a closet and another closet close by. Storage space is plentiful in the basement; unfinished cold storage is located beyond a finished storage room by the downstairs bedrooms. If there wasn’t enough room to house belongings, the garage has two storage rooms: one accessed from the inside and another from the outside for pool equipment. Yes—a 20x40 in-ground pool sits centered with the house in the backyard. The full-width entry and diving board make it fitting for all ages. To its east is a fire pit and basketball court, furthering the outdoor fun. And just inside the garage from the backyard is a bathroom for changing clothes. The eight-bedroom, six-bathroom monstrosity may feel like a maze, but getting lost is a welcome experience.

104 MOONSTONE LANE • BLACK ROCK ESTATES

Brown Builders

Backyard Bliss By Tara Cady • tcady@billingsgazette.com‌

To Brown Builders owner Todd Brown, homes in his Black Rock Estates development are known for their views. “You get a bit of everything here,” Brown said. “Beartooths, Pryors, Rims.” What sets the Parade home at 104 Moonstone Ln. apart from the rest in the neighborhood off Central Avenue is the “bridge-way” seen upon entry into the partial two-story residence. Up the LED-lit cement steps and through the front door is a metal chandelier surrounded by partial and complete walls in the foyer, one of which connects the top of stairs to the rest of the second floor. The bridge-way is

like an actual bridge that overlooks the main level’s great room. From this immediate focal point is an office and powder room nearest the front door; a great room whose open floor plan covers a living room, kitchen and dining room; and steps which lead upstairs and downstairs. The street-facing office features custom-built alder wood cabinetry as part of the desk area. Nearby, the powder room includes a glass, raised bowl sink with metal top. In the great room is a gas fireplace encased in tan-colored, floor-to-ceiling tiles that showcase the vaulted ceiling. A TV niche rests above the heat

source and alder shelving with recessed lighting is situated at either side of the hearth. Natural light comes in from the west, where windows and patio doors show open fields. No additional development is planned to the west of the cul-de-sac, where part of the neighborhood park’s 10 ½ acres borders the home’s property. Across from the fireplace are glassenclosed, Edison bulb light fixtures hanging over an 11 ½-foot-long kitchen island. Built inside the island is a dishwasher, sink and considerable storage space. Everything about the home is light, white and warm. From the white cabinetry and countertops to the near-white gray walls and light gray subway tile, the only darkness found in the kitchen is the hickory hardwood flooring. The floor panels’ differing widths trick the eye and contrast painted white trim throughout the main level. A double oven, built-in hood and beverage center conclude the bright kitchen. But there’s two other places to make meals: outside on the built-in gas patio grill and downstairs at the wet bar. Also on the first floor is the master suite, which has an exterior door opening to the patio where a built-in hot tub rests in concrete nearby a linear gas fireplace. Equally relaxing is the en suite with soaking tub and large, walkin shower. Alder cabinetry balances the flooring’s white, marble-style hexagon tile. A separate toilet room and walk-in closet sum up the master suite. Connected to the three-car garage is a mudroom with laundry close by; each F

has ample storage space. Flooring switches from hardwood to carpeting with the stairs and the rest of the second level. Metal railings add an industrial touch to an otherwise sleeklooking great room. Mountain views increase in each west-facing bedroom upstairs. One of those is a bonus room, where a Murphy-style bed rolls out from inside the trusses, as opposed to folding down from a recessed wall. Custom cabinetry and desk space keep the room ideal for hobbyists or guests. A full bath and third bedroom make up the rest of the second floor. Livable space continues to find a place in the finished basement, but more defined than the main level’s open floor plan. At first glance, the home’s lowest level seems to abruptly end in a large family room, which features an extensive wet bar equipped with a dishwasher, minifridge and kegerator. But the basement continues through an opening that conceals a long hallway leading to two bedrooms with walk-in closets and a full bathroom. Curb appeal is achieved with 8x8 fir posts, stonemasonry and dormers above the garage and covered front porch. But in the backyard, that’s where things heat up quite literally with the linear gas fireplace, hot tub and grill on the patio plus a gas fireplace further out in the yard. With six bedrooms and 3 ½ baths, the 4,499-square-foot home is worth the time it takes to explore – and enjoy – every nook and cranny.

gray concrete with a charcoal release; the hard surface is cut intentionally to make a circle in its design, akin to a sun and its rays of light. Shapes continue making a statement as arched windows and a rounded fountain. White pillars designate the grand entryway, which begins before stepping foot inside. The oceanlike feel it brings continues inside. Chandeliers centered in ceilings with

Constructed mostly by Customary Designs owner Luke Kuhr himself, this labor of love at 9314 Sanctuary Estates Dr. is 3,981-square-feet with two bedrooms and three full baths. rope lighting in their crown are found in the foyer, great room and formal dining room. Such luxuriousness is expanded with curved corners at 45 degrees, wallpapered wall niches, recessed lighting and differing shades of gray paint. The foyer’s porcelain tile flooring, which mimics marble, switches to a maple engineered hardwood in the great room, formal dining room and kitchen. Taiwanese silk curtains keep the formal dining room looking chic and the homeowner’s many photographs from vacations to exotic places decorate every room. French doors add natural light into the main living area while also accessing the back patio. A white mantle on the gray-tiled gas fireplace in the great room brings out other touches of white—like the painted trim, crown molding and columns outlining where the great room ends and the kitchen begins. An arched opening which squares off at the side invites those in the living area into a kitchen designed for entertaining. A barrel ceiling is but one of the room’s many unique features. The white shaker-style, soft-close cabinetry with charcoal glaze includes a custom crown with LED lighting in the crown and above the metallic backsplash and quartz countertops. The custom lighting’s 44 color options ensure a lively time cooking and serving food to guests who may sit at the 11x4 ½ foot kitchen island. Beyond the kitchen, seating areas abound with a nook intended for gathering dividing it and a solarium. The solarium spans majority of the home’s southern edge with several windows, a door to the patio, and two separate spots to sit, chat or read while viewing the spacious backyard. The property borders the subdivision’s 7 ½ acres of wetlands and park area. Sand hill cranes, turtles, ducks, muskrats, deer, skunk and geese are several species to be seen. Modernized barn doors connect the solarium to a studio. A mural is painted on the doors; when open, they display two seemingly different paintings. A wood-looking porcelain tile with a rustic touch define the floors in both the solarium and studio. Nearby is a nook

for an antique desk, a bathroom and a guest bedroom with an en suite bathroom and walk-in closet. The bathrooms mirror each other, with mocha cabinetry, vessel sinks, stonework, porcelain tile and a deep bath with shower. The silver two-tone carpeting in the guest bedroom matches that of the master. Adjacent the foyer and great room are two doors: one is to a small coat closet and the other to an expansive master suite. A ceiling similar to that of the formal dining area, foyer and great room continues the home’s elegant design in the master bedroom. The morning’s sunrise will bounce light off the chandelier through a transom window above the bed. Natural light is maintained through a glass patio door with windows at either side. A hallway, specific to the suite, expands private space and accesses two closets. The walk-in closet is large enough to house a second laundry, chandelier and built-in cubbies for easy organization. A linen closet is closest to the master bathroom. Truly a restroom, a soaker tub with porcelain subway tile is front-and-center as the bathroom’s centerpiece. It features views of the front yard fountain; the on/off switch is within reach of the double vanity. Mocha cabinetry and a quartz countertop match the home’s other bathrooms. A private toilet room includes a urinal and floors are heated by a nearby touch screen or via smart phone. Two entrances provide a seamless walkthrough shower. Additional shower features include an infinity drain, mosaic waterfall-style tile arrangement, and transom window. A main laundry room is located nearest the kitchen, with a mudroom dividing it and the four-car garage. Both garage doors are facing, allowing cars to drive in one entrance and out the other. Gray vinyl fencing borders the oneacre property and its elaborate landscaping, further establishing it as a private refuge. One back patio will soon turn into two and three as building continues after the Parade.

4712 AUDUBON WAY • RIM POINT

Classic Design Homes

Kids’ Paradise By Charity Dewing • cdewing@billingsgazette.com‌

Classic Design Homes maintains contemporary appeal with a homey vibe. With five bedrooms and four full baths at 4712 Audubon Way, it’s a place to create unforgettable memories. The dark gray James Hardie siding contrasts with the white panel exterior. But, it’s the timber and stone accents that make the colors pop, delivering the look of a modern Montana home. Inside, a 10-foot-high ceiling is vaulted in the middle, extending the room upward. Numerous large windows and an open-concept floor plan ensure relaxation. Above the gray stone fireplace rests two small barn doors that slide apart, revealing a built-in entertainment center. Storage for devices and movies is at both sides of the hearth. The home is bathed in natural light. The kitchen welcomes warm rays of sun against the crisp white cabinetry. A coal-colored composite sink pairs well with the dark bronze cabinet hardware. The quartz countertop and island are highlighted by the cool gray-slate back-

splash throughout the space. Storage is abundant in the massive walk-in pantry. Just push open the large, white doors and reveal room to stock shelves for years. The kitchen is topped off with black stainless steel Samsung appliances. Between the kitchen and dining room is a larger set of barn doors that open up to what Classic Design Homes owner Doug Wild calls “the homework room.” With separate desks, computer access and plenty of storage above, children can focus on their homework while parents prepare dinner – making it easier to be on-hand and keep an eye on kiddos. Off of the dining room is the first floor patio. The concrete walkout is ideal for outdoor dining. Family and friends can spend evenings against the backdrop of the open fields and Rimrocks while enjoying a meal and company. The main floor also offers a bathroom and two bedrooms, one of which is the master. The deluxe room is fully loaded

with a sauna/shower en suite with dual granite vanities and a massive walk-in closet with built-in shelving – and direct access to the laundry room. Downstairs, the basement transforms into a child’s paradise. This will be the place all of the neighborhood kids want to be. The sizeable space, otherwise known as “The Romp Room,” reveals a large rock wall leading to a fort and secret passage to explore and play for hours. Swings hang from steel beams in the center. A 24-compartment, multicolored cubby is built around a larger cubicle with pillow seat for kids to curl up and read. Huge barn doors open

to expose vast windows that illuminate the colorful wonderland. Another small hideout built under the stairs lets imaginations run wild. Off the playroom is a classroom area for children who are homeschooled or who need a little extra attention with a tutor. After a day of play, everyone can hang out in the family room complete with an entertainment system and surround sound. Just outside is a lower deck that provides shade on hot days. No one is forgotten in this home’s design. The basement also features a second laundry with a built-in doggy bedroom.
