BILLINGS MAY 2017 | 1
WELCOME TO DOWNTOWN BILLINGS “This is Downtown Billings.” We use that phrase frequently, and with a lot of pride. But what does it really mean? For us, it is not a casual statement, it’s an invitation to enjoy the best Downtown Billings has to offer. It’s art. It’s culture. It’s exceptional retail and dining. It’s a summer concert series, the largest ArtWalk in the state, 12 weeks and 5 blocks of Farmers Market, home-spun festivals and feasts; it’s Montana Fair. It’s indie theater, innovative coffee shops, home-made ice cream, boutique, antique and vintage shops, and
award-winning tap houses and distilleries. It’s baseball, an award-winning, a state-of-theart library; it’s farm-to-table, a children’s museum and so much more. And every bit of it is filled with good people, from the people that run the businesses to the people that frequent them. They might just be the best part of this city, and they are the Downtown Billings Association. They invite you into their establishments; you’ll love the personalized service you receive in downtown Billings. In this downtown edition of
the All Around Billings Directory, you’ll find our member businesses listed and all the information you need to enjoy your experience in Downtown Billings! So, join us for a day, for an extended visit, or for a lifetime. We’re so glad you’re here.

PUBLIC ART
Brightening up downtown Visual art creates a local identity, adds dimension, depth and character to a community. In an effort to add to the beauty and character of Downtown Billings, the Downtown Billings Alliance is consistently looking for opportunities to expand the number of public art displays. The DBA’s Public Art Committee launched the Traffic Signal Box Wrap Program back in 2013. This program is primarily funded by the City of Billings and has completed more than 12 traffic signal boxes wraps so far, each featuring images of original works of art. The art is selected from chosen local and regional artists’ and is digitally transferred to a vinyl overlay and professionally wrapped around each signal box. The vinyl wrap is sustainable in the elements and has anti-graffiti qualities that allow it to be cleaned very easily. The Public Art Committee has collaborated on other initiatives downtown, including a summer piano installation under Skypoint for public use, the sidewalk mural event Chalk on the Walk, the mural on 29th street next to Limber Tree Yoga studio, and “Art Alley” next to Good Earth Market.

ARTWALK
Downtown Billings art event showcases local, regional artists ArtWalk Downtown Billings opened its 23rd Season with a Spring ArtWalk on Friday, May 5, 2017. Multiple art galleries, studios, museums, non-profit organizations and other “art-friendly” venues welcomed visitors to chat with artists, view and purchase their work and celebrate the creative spirit that thrives in downtown Billings. Events for the remainder of the 23rd Season include the Summer ArtWalk on August 4, Autumn ArtWalk on October 6, Holiday ArtWalk on December 1, 2017 and Winter ArtWalk on February 2, 2018. Refreshments and music are offered at many locations. In 1994, a small, visionary group of artists and gallery owners on Montana Avenue began ArtWalk when they opened their doors on selected Friday evenings to welcome art patrons, share a beverage, talk about and purchase art. Over the years, ArtWalk has captured the imagination of Billings residents and visitors. Some locations are standing room only, including the Toucan Gallery, affectionately known as the “birthplace of the Billings ArtWalk.” Mother Nature usually looks kindly on ArtWalk and sends us balmy weather, no matter the season. Even so, ArtWalk winter temperatures sometimes dip below zero. Not to worry! ArtWalk is weather resistant; its artists and patrons are hearty folks. Challenging the weather becomes part of the fun! In 2014, ArtWalk formalized a working agreement with the Downtown Billings Alliance to strengthen and add structure to the event, although it remains a member-led organization.

Caleb Johnson plays the violin at the Farmers’ Market in downtown Billings. The market runs from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, July 22 through October 7.
Saturday morning Farmers’ Market returns July 22 The area under Skypoint will again be buzzing with vendors and customers alike between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon each Saturday this summer. The Yellowstone Valley Farmers’ Market returns to downtown Billings on Saturday, July 22 and continues through October 7.
The Farmers’ Market was originally founded in 1985 by a group of local residents who wanted a place for local farmers and growers to display and sell their produce. Thirty-two years later, the Farmers’ Market is a mix of outdoor shopping with unique one-
of-a-kind goods. Local vendors and area farmers offer baked goods, prepared foods and fresh fruits and vegetables. Not solely limited to large farmers, a neighborhood table is available for people with garden goods to sell.
Those interested in obtaining booth space at either event may call the Yellowstone Valley Farmers’ Market at 406-855-1299 or 406-697-5295. Visit their website at www.yvfm.org, or find them on Facebook by searching “Yellowstone Valley Farmers Market.”

SERVICE & OUTREACH
Making a difference in downtown Billings Community Innovations
In 2014, a Community Innovations Summit was hosted by the Downtown Billings Alliance (DBA) and the City of Billings to address the issues of chronic inebriation, an increase in street disorder, and transiency affecting the city, and in particular, downtown Billings. The two day summit, which showcased national best practices, was data-driven and solution-oriented. The Community Innovations Team, drawing on leadership from the business community, the social service sector, city government and officials, law enforcement, tribal leaders, and the faith community, continues to drive change through creation of 5 working task forces, implementation of comprehensive, downtown community policing program, and a continuum of care where the cornerstone is cultural awareness and sensitivity in counseling and treatment, while intersecting vulnerable populations with

The most visible element of the Clean and Safe programs of the Business Improvement District (BID) is the men and women in purple uniforms known as the Purple People. The BID has had a measurable impact on the 18 block district as evidenced in not only a cleaner and safer district but in a friendlier downtown. It is not uncommon to see a BID ambassador handing out parking tokens and directories, giving directions or a personal escort, or helping a homeless individual to a resource agency. The Purple People are daily committed to achieving a higher standard in the delivery of services offered in the BID work plan.

SPARE CHANGE FOR REAL CHANGE
Program continues to bridge gap between city, public efforts Spare Change for Real Change was created by Downtown Billings to bridge the gap between the city’s concerted efforts to impact homelessness, and alleviate poverty and addiction, and the public’s participation in those efforts. Through education campaigns and providing an alternative to giving money, Spare Change for Real Change has become an effective program in the fight!

1. Encourage the public to reconsider their method of giving by reminding them that change given in the streets is too often used to feed an addiction. There are other and better ways to give. 2. Empower the Business Improvement District in considering the welfare of the local businesses, and empowering businesses to positively impact the social issues we face as a community. BATTLE OF THE PLANS
Have you heard of Battle of the Plans? Downtown launched a business plan competition last year and the response was unbelievable. Forty proposals were submitted to start a business in downtown Billings! Classes on marketing, planning, human resources and finances were offered to competitors throughout the summer, all in preparation for the final round, a Shark Tank-styled presentation of the best plans. In the end, three winners were picked to represent three categories - a new business, an expanding business and a college-level business plan. We’d like to congratulate the Pub Station for winning the expanding business competition; they were awarded a cash prize to assist with their ballroom. We’d also like to congratulate Get Juiced for winning the new business (to downtown) category! The college business plan prize went to Audrey Henderson of Rocky Mountain College. If you get the chance, see a show at the Pub Station’s new ballroom (tickets are available at 1111presents.com) and stop in and try Get Juiced at their current location on 24th and Broadwater. Don’t forget to congratulate the winners! ALIVE AFTER 5
Alive After 5: 14 years of fun TARA CADY
tcady@billingsgazette.com
Summertime rush hour gets hectic Thursday nights in downtown Billings. Instead of fighting car traffic, why not join the crowd walking toward the nearest blockedoff street? Live music and food and drink vendors await. Alive After 5 has been part of d ow n tow n Billings’ summer scene since 2003, when the Downtown Billings Alliance launched the concert series. Ray Porrello, DBA executive assistant for member relations, says the events continue to fund what the alliance does for downtown, such as keeping streets clean and working to alleviate homelessness. By purchasing a Best Friend of Downtown card from the DBA, event goers receive a free wristband for alcohol. The wristbands are regularly $2, but those not wishing to drink can attend without cost. For 13 weeks starting June 1, downtown locations take turns hosting a weekday party in the street. The Pub Station is hosting the season opener featuring Pinky and the Floyd. “We just enjoy supporting downtown Billings and anything we can do to increase the amount of people that come downtown. We’re all behind it,” said Pub Station owner Sean Lynch. Last Chance Pub & Cider Mill

A.J. Miller said. “Just by being a Billings institution, you can count on people showing up.” Every Thursday from June 1 to Aug. 31 (except July 6) downtown comes alive. Expect satiating
street eats, delicious libations and plenty of elbow room to dance it all off at each concert. The party begins at 5 p.m. and ends at 8 p.m. For up-to-date information, see downtownbillings. com or visit the Alive After 5 Facebook page.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL
Strawberry Festival takes a bite out of downtown Located in the streets of downtown Billings, the Strawberry Festival is a long-time cherished community event that opens the summer season on the second Saturday in June. This year’s 26th annual Strawberry Festival is Saturday, June 10 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. The Strawberry Festival takes place under Skypoint starting with the Strawberry Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Billings Heights Lions Club. The event will feature arts & crafts booths, food trucks, live entertainment, and a 60 foot long strawberry shortcake prepared by the Chefs & Cooks of Montana. The cake serves approximately 1,500 people and is usually around $3 per slice. With an interactive children’s area including free crafts and interactive activities for all ages, this event draws people throughout the northwest region to Downtown Billings under Skypoint at 2nd Ave N. and Broadway.

DOWNTOWN PARKING
Park it here!
On-Street Parking
On the city streets, there is both metered parking and posted parking. Metered parking times range from 2 hours to 10 hours. Some of the metered parking specifications are designated by colored domes on top of the meters. For example, green-domed meters signify that 1/2 of the proceeds of this meter will be given to Downtown Billings to be used for various downtown beautification projects, including flower baskets and street decorations. Also, meters may be mounted on colored posts to signify special parking. For example, yellow-posted meters indicate
