Spare Change for Real Change

4 organizations receive Spare Change grants Spare Change for Real Change is pleased to announce the recipients of the Spare Change for Real Change Grant for 2011. Four organizations received grant awards this year totaling $7,500. The main recipient is the Housing Authority of Billings in the amount of $4,500 for HUD-VASH security deposit assistance that helps homeless veterans re-establish their own housing situation. We will also be awarding the Mental Health Center-Hub $1,000 to be used for new laptops for their caseworkers when they are doing outreach and home visits. Also chosen is Tumbleweed in the amount of $1,000 to be put toward outreach supplies for homeless and runaway youth. Finally, $1,000 will be given to Yellowstone County Family Drug Treatment Court which will also be used for security deposit assistance for clients when they are ready for independent housing as they successfully move through their treatment course. The Board of the Downtown Billings Business Improvement District (BID) established the fundraising and public education campaign Spare Change for Real Change in the fall of 2005 with two major goals in mind. The first was to encourage the public to reconsider their method of giving, reminding them that while change given to a panhandler is too often used to feed an addiction, there are other, better ways to give. As a Business Improvement District, it is the organization’s responsibility to consider the welfare of the local businesses, but to do so with a heart for all members of our com-

munity, which resulted in the Board’s second goal through Spare Change for Real Change; educating and caring for the community downtown and across the city of Billings. This year, Spare Change for Real Change has grown.

Last year, our goal was to be able to grant $5,000; this year we grew that goal to $7,500 and that goal was met. The second annual Purple 5K and Downtown Crit were great successes, drawing more than 300 participants to downtown, and raising unprecedented money and awareness for the program. Donations were made to local and national charities in the name of the winners of these events, including the Children’s Miracle Network, Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter, the Humane Society, Billings Food Bank, the Hub, The Women’s and Family Shelter, the Montana Rescue Mission, and the Rape and Sexual Assault Hotline. These events will continue to be held on an annual basis. As they grow, so will the effectiveness of the grant program, and so will the public awareness of the situation of the homeless citizens of Billings and the organizations that work so hard to transition them back to a safe, secure, and warm housing. Further support of the program comes through sponsorships of donation meters, currently located at the Parmly Billings Library, Downtown MET Transfer Station, Crowne Plaza Starbucks, MSU Billings’ Student Union Building, King of Glory Church, NAPA Auto (West End) and the Downtown Billings Alliance office. There is still time to make a difference. Join us June 27 in downtown Billings for the Criterium-style bike race. To learn more about Spare Change for Real Change and our events, visit www.4realchange.org.

Billings Mustangs Mustangs start 60th season June 18 Gazette Staff The Billings Mustangs will kick off their 60th season playing in Billings with a homestand against Missoula on June 18. The 2012 Mustangs will wear a special sleeve patch on home and road uniforms to acknowledge the anniversary. The commemorative logo also will be available on team merchandise and souvenirs. “We haven’t really done anything with our anniversaries up to this point, at least since I’ve been here, and felt this one was significant enough to do something with,” said Billings Mustangs general manager Gary Roller Roller. “Across the country there aren’t a lot of (minor league) teams that can say they’ve played 60 seasons. I think that’s a lot of the driving force behind this.” It hasn’t been 60 consecutive seasons for the Mustangs, who first played in 1948. There were stretches in the 1960s where the Mustangs didn’t operate a team. But the franchise, which played its first professional game on April 28, 1948, is entering its 39th consecutive season with the Cincinnati Reds, one of the longest player development relationships in professional baseball. “You have to look for certain things to keep it fresh and keep the look fresh,” Roller said of the logo, which was designed in association with Simon Studio. “The first thought wasn’t how much money we could make off of this, because, to be honest, we’re probably not going to

G8

make any. It’s a celebration of our history, and we’re proud of that.” Pat Kelly, who managed the Billings Mustangs to a 44-32 record in 2011, will return for the 2012 season. In 2011, Kelly’s first with the Mustangs, the team finished with the best overall record in the North Division but did not make the playoffs due to the split-season format. Kelly has spent 20 seasons managing in the minor leagues. The Mustangs begin the 2012 season on June 18 with a fourgame homestand at Dehler Park against the Missoula Opsrey. The season wraps up with a four-day road trip to Helena and Missoula Sept. 3-6. Sunday home games, Roller said, will start at 2:05 p.m. rather than 4:05, which has been the traditional first pitch since the move

to Dehler Park four seasons ago. Roller said the Mustangs have long wanted the earlier time, but league by-laws prevent earlyafternoon starts in the first game of a series to allow the traveling team or teams more rest before a game. All of this year’s Sunday games either fall in the middle of a series or at the end. “We’ve always felt (2:05 p.m.) is a good time to play,” Roller said. “I think the 4:05 slot is the hottest part of the day, especially here with so much concrete where it’s had all day to bake. At 4:05 here, it is smoking.” The Mustangs make their first trip to Grand Junction, Colo., on July 23. Grand Junction joined the league when new owners purchased the Casper (Wyo.) Ghosts and moved the franchise to Colorado. For a full schedule and ticket information, go to www.milb. com/index.jsp?sid=t513 or call 406-252-1241.

Downtown Night at the Mustangs Downtown Night at the Mustangs is Downtown Billings’ longest-running event. This year, join us on Monday, July 30, at 7:05 p.m. as the Billings Mustangs play Great Falls. Giveaways and promotions will be featured during the game donated by Downtown merchants and businesses. Dehler Park has picnic areas for families and large groups, a cool merchandise shop, concessions that include brats, burgers, soft drinks, beer and mojito coolers. You can walk the entire field thanks to an outfield terrace which is home to those who buy a standing room only ticket. Get your tickets at Dehler Park ticket office, or by going to www.billingsmustangs.com and clicking on tickets. Parking is behind and to the east of Dehler Park. You can also park at metered parking in Downtown or in Park I or Park II (garages) which are all free in the evening. Dehler Park (and before at Cobb Field) is renowned in the Pioneer League for the “Beer Batter.” Every game, the Mustangs Beer Boosters designate one player as the “Beer Batter.” If that player gets a hit, attendees can buy four beers for $10. Many eager buyers stand at the stairs anticipating a hit and the oncoming rush of people. Come celebrate the season with us at Downtown Night at the Mustangs.

Downtown Resource Officers

Keeping downtown safe 2 resource officers help city’s center run smoothly

LARRY MAYER\Gazette Staff

Downtown Billings bicycle officers Harley Cagle, left, and Shane Winden patrol the downtown area.

Downtown Billings is committed to a dynamic, safe urban center, and to that end, now has two downtown resource officers assigned to the district. In January 2011, Billings Police Department Officer Harley Cagle came on board as the second downtown resource officer, joining Officer Shane Winden. Officers Winden and Cagle provide additional presence, visibility, and assistance in Downtown Billings over and above that which is already provided by the Billings Police Department. Our

Downtown Center Beat Officers, stationed at the Downtown Billings Alliance office, patrol on foot and they are bike cops, too. You’ll see them patrolling the district, deterring crime, giving a helping hand, and generally making sure our downtown is running smoothly. Through their leadership, the Business Improvement District (BID) has launched a Business Watch program that functions much like a Neighborhood Watch program. Neighbors keep an eye on each other to help keep their, in this case, business community safe. Downtown Billings is very proud of its downtown cops! Officers Winden and Cagle can be reached at 406-690-4227.

Loan-A-Bike program: Bicycles welcome in Downtown Billings The Loan-A-Bike program makes a bicycle available for use, free of charge, during business hours in downtown Billings. This program encourages people to think of bicycles as efficient, practical transportation, as well as recreation or exercise equipment. Grab a bicycle, lock and

helmet free of charge for midday downtown errands or simply a breath of fresh air. All you need to do is stop by the Downtown Billings offices at 2815 Second Ave. N. with a photo ID, a credit or debit card, and a few calories to burn. It’s just another step taken

by Downtown Billings to celebrate the friendly, lively nature of downtown, connect to our nearby trails, and increase awareness of walking and cycling as efficient, effective forms of alternate transportation. With escalating energy costs, walkability and connectivity are

increasingly important issues, and Downtown Billings is committed to building an effective downtown infrastructure. Look for secure bike parking, more bike racks and bicycle specific lanes and paths that work well with existing roadways and parking facilities in Downtown Billings.

Yellowstone Valley Farmers’ Market

Saturday morning market returns July 21 The area under Skypoint will again be buzzing with vendors and customers alike between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon each Saturday this summer. The Farmers’ Market returns to downtown Billings on Saturday, July 21, and continues through Oct. 6. The Farmers’ Market is a successful mix of outdoor shopping with unique, one-of-a-kind goods. Local vendors and area farmers offer baked goods, prepared foods and fresh fruits and vegetables — everything from honey to huckleberries. Not solely limited to large farmers, a neighborhood table is available for people with garden goods to sell. In August, a Wednesday evening Farmers’ Market also will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. A smaller version of the Saturday event, the evening market offers patrons the same quality wares. The fi rst evening market is Aug. 1 and runs through Aug. 29. Those interested in obtaining booth space at either event may call the Yellowstone Valley Farmers Market’s market master at 406-855-1299.

Moss Mansion Historic House Museum 914 Division St. 406-256-5100 www.mossmansion.com Explore a historic local treasure in Downtown Billings! Designed by New York architect, Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, designer of the original Waldorf Astoria, the Moss Mansion was home to Preston Boyd (P.B.) Moss and wife, Mattie. Since 1903 the house has stood witness to the growth and development of Billings. A successful entrepreneur and politician, P.B. was one of Billings’ wealthiest citizens. Together with his wife Mattie, they built the beautiful red sandstone structure and traveled the world to hand pick the many furnishings that would make their house a home. Today, visitors will find many of these objects in the same rooms for which they were purchased. The Moss Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a source of inspiration and education for all those who visit. Take a guided tour, stroll through the beautiful grounds, and shop at Mattie’s Gift Shop. Join us on June 2nd for SpringFest, our annual arts and crafts festival or stop by to view our new exhibit featuring never before seen Moss family items and vintage clothing.

tive of Shakespeare’s genius as a playwright,” said Joel Jahnke, MSIP’s artistic director and a professor of theater at Montana State University. Jahnke directs “Hamlet,” which he said is almost universally hailed as the greatest play ever written in the English language. Associate artistic director William Brown directs “Twelfth Night,” Shakespeare’s comedy of wild infatuation and mistaken identities. All performances of Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, with the exception of those at Bozeman’s Sweet Pea Festival, are free and tickets are not needed for admission. For more information on the plays and a complete tour schedule, visit the company’s website http://www.shakespeareintheparks.org. from organizations that promote healthy living. Last year’s festival drew more than 3,000 to Dehler Park. The YMCA will provide plenty of things for kids to do, including Zumba sessions and games. Admission is free and anyone may attend. Last year, organizers of the run donated $20,000 to the YMCA Strong Community Campaign and BikeNet. Organizers are hoping to draw 4,000 runners and become a signature event for Billings. “We are pleased to expand the reach of the event and partner with others in promoting health and fitness as a way of life not only in our community but regionally,” said Michael Gulledge, publisher of the Gazette.

The Wild West Soiree Street Fair in downtown Billings begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 16, and includes a battle of the bands dubbed the Soiree Stars Musical Shootout. A street dance at 7 p.m. will wrap the weekend. Registration for the 2012 Heart

Downtown events

Seasonal events draw thousands downtown By SUSAN OLP solp@billingsgazette.com People looking for anything from music, food and festivals can get their fill Downtown this summer. Year after year, the number of downtown activities continues to grow, says Lisa Harmon, executive director of the Downtown Billings Association. “We’ve become kind of a destination,” Harmon said. “In fact, we’re the largest city for a couple of states.” The events draw an increasing number of people, as well, Harmon said. Last year alone, about 12,000 visitors attended the Strawberry Festival, and the Wild West Soiree drew more than 9,000. One factor that brings people downtown is its renaissance, thanks to years of renovation. Colorful foliage, daily cleaning and the presence of police on bicycle patrols also make downtown a pleasant and safe place for the different events. “We’ve made downtown a better stage for it,” said Harmon. Here are some details about events coming up in downtown Billings: First Friday: June 1, July 6, Aug. 3. Downtown businesses extend their shopping hours until 8 p.m. Alive After 5: The outdoor concert series runs Thursday night from 5 to 8 p.m., from June 7 to Aug. 30. The free concerts, which feature local bands, take place at different downtown venues and offer dancing, food and beverages. This year’s lineup includes: June 7: Ten foot tall & 80 proof at Don Luis

Battle of the Little Bighorn

Custer rides again June 22-24 at Little Bighorn By LORNA THACKERAY lthackeray@billingsgazette.com The Battle of the Little Bighorn will be fought again and again for the edification of thousands of tourists over the weekend of June 22-24. Two separate re-enactments, one near Hardin and another near Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The script for the re-enactment near Hardin, sponsored by the Hardin Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, is based on notes from Crow historian Joe Medicine Crow. Crow warriors acted as scouts for Custer. Performances are at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Cost is $20 for adults and $8 for children. Children 5 and younger get in free. The Real Bird family reenactment near the battlefield takes place on the banks of the Little Bighorn River at Medicine Tail Coulee, where some say Custer tried unsuccessfully to cross with his five companies. The site, like the battlefield itself, is within the boundaries of

the Crow Reservation. Performances are at 1 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Cost is $20 for adults and $15 for youth. Young children are admitted free. Both events feature seasoned Indian and cavalry re-enactors. The entire weekend, starting Thursday, is filled with events in Hardin for Little Bighorn Days and in Crow Agency for Crow Native Days. Since the towns are 15 minutes apart on Interstate

90, and Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument is just a few minutes from Crow Agency, visitors can take in a lot. One of the highlights in Hardin is the annual 1876 Grand Ball. Participants in period costume dance the night away Thursday, June 21, to the same music the 7th Cavalry would have heard at frontier posts across the West. For those who want to learn dances of the era, a group lesson is set that

afternoon from 1 to 2:15 at the Big Horn County Fairgrounds. Tickets are $30 each and include a light supper. Tickets must be purchased in advance. None will be sold at the door. The dance lesson will cost $5. Period dresses can be rented by calling 406-6392219. The Hardin celebration also includes parades on Friday and Saturday mornings, a demolition derby at the fairgrounds on Saturday and a street dance beginning at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Crow Native Days includes parades, powwows, traditional games, horse races, rodeo, relays, trail rides and the Ultimate Warrior Challenge. Tribes from around the country are invited and everyone is welcome. The battle anniversary falls on a Monday this year. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument usually waives admission fees on the anniversary and schedules speakers from tribes that participated in the battle, as well as organizations associated with preserving the battlefield and its history. Hotels in nearby Hardin fill quickly. Reservations are a good idea. Billings is 45 miles to the west on Interstate 90.

About the battle In the last days of June in the sweltering summer of 1876, one of the largest forces of Northern Plains Indians ever assembled set up camp circles on the edge of the Little Bighorn River. On the dusty afternoon of June 25, while young men bathed in the river and women went about their chores, three companies of the U.S. 7th Cavalry came crashing across the water into Sitting Bull’s camp.

Five more companies under the direct command of Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer rode the ridges above, apparently planning to cross and attack further along the river. Two more companies and the pack train were coming up a few miles away. But Cheyenne, Lakota and a smattering of warriors from other tribes swarmed out their camps and crossed the river. They pushed

Custer’s five companies back and wiped out the entire command, including Custer as he fought to his end on Last Stand Hill. A few miles away, warriors laid siege to Custer’s six remaining companies, inflicting heavy casualties for two more days. Then, at the approach of more soldiers, the tribes packed up their camps and moved toward the Bighorn Mountains.
