BSSG Opening Ceremonies State Games Ignites With Opening Celebration The Big Sky State Games Opening Ceremonies will set the 33rd Annual Games in motion on Friday, July 20th at Wendy’s Field at Daylis Stadium. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. to the PreGames Festival featuring interactive booths, climbing wall, food trucks, music, interactive booths and souvenirs. At 6:00 p.m., the 5th Annual Soaked fun run/walk first wave begins in and around Pioneer Park. On typically one of the hottest days of the summer, the Soaked fun run includes Billings Fire Department fire hoses, sprinklers, foam machine, two slip n slides, and loads of water. The run wraps up with a lap around the track inside Daylis Stadium. Pre-Parade entertainment includes performances by Big Sky State Games Dance Sports Gold Medalists and Overall High Point Winners and a Pound demonstration. At 7:30 p.m. the Parade of Athletes will begin with all 36 sports of the Games represented and recognized. The Parade Marshalls are the State Games Character Counts Scholar-
ship winners Hannah Hirschi from Skyview High School, Devin Amtmann from Butte High School, Loran Murphy from Huntley High School, Shea Dolan and Karter Bernhardt both from Billings West High School. The evening’s program includes State Games Hot Money Give Away of 20 $100 bills, TNT Dunk Squad Performance, Torch Lighting by World Record Holder Long Jump Mike Powell and the Montana Mile, (Montana’s fastest male and female milers), supported by Montana Pipeline Presents. Other highlights Opening Ceremonies are State Games National Anthem Contest Winner Savannah Williams, Billings Mayor Bill Cole, Marine Corps Color Guard, Billings Senior High Drum Corps and the 2017 Athletes of the Year. Admission is $5 and free to children 6 and under. Athletes are admitted with their Opening Ceremonies ticket. SOAKED Run begins at 6:00 p.m. DRIVERS: No parking on the West side of Third Street West from Grand Avenue to Parkhill. Please be cautious, runners and walkers will be on Third Street West, Parkhill, and Virginia Lane surrounding Pioneer Park. PARKING: Park in the YMCA and Transwestern Building lots (Grand and North 32nd St.) and ride the shuttle vans to and from Opening Ceremonies. ROAD RACE: 5K, 10K & ½ Marathon (Saturday Morning): ½ Marathon begins at 7:00 a.m.; 10k race begins at 7:30 a.m.; and the 5K race begins at 7:40 a.m. ROUTE: The 5K, 10K and ½ Marathon course will begin and end on East Lauralee Lane off Thiel Road/ (River Road) ½ mile south of Laurel. Utah Jazz Dunk Team Performs at Opening Ceremonies Utah Jazz Dunk Team will perform at the Big Sky State Games Opening Ceremonies, Friday, July 20th at Wendy’s Field at Daylis Stadium. They have been thrilling audiences around the world with their electrifying slam dunk entertainment for 15 years. The event includes high flying trampoline aerial stunts, spectacular slam dunks and unmatched showmanship. Great entertainment for the whole family. Mike Powell to light torch
Soaked Race Kicks off BSSG
Long Jump World Record holder Mike Powell is the special guest athlete of the 33rd Annual Big Sky State Games Friday, July 20. He will speak and light the torch during Opening Ceremonies at Wendy’s Field at Daylis Stadium in Billings. Powell is a two-time Olympic Silver Medalist in long jump winning silver at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. He set the World Record at the 1991 Track and Field World Championships in Tokyo; leaping 8.95 meters (29ft. 4 ¼ in.) to break Bob Beaman’s almost 23 year old record. Powell’s record still stands nearly 27 years later. Powell was one of the most consistent long jumpers during his era winning 34 competitions in a row. He is the fourth person since 1900 to hold the long jump world record for over 20 years. His victory over Carl Lewis to set the world record helped him earn the James E. Sullivan Award and BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year Award in 1991. Powell was the 1990 World Indoor Long Jump Champion and the 1991 and 1993 World Outdoor Long Jump Champion. During the Big Sky State Games Powell will also coach long jump at the World Record Track & Field Camp on Friday, July 20, 9:00 am – 3:00 p.m. at Billings West High School Track. In addition to Powell, the Track & Field Camp features Willie Banks - three-time Olympian and World Record Triple Jumper, Dick Fosbury- Olympic Gold Medalist (High Jump), Tom Pukstys- American Record Holder and two-time Olympian (Javelin), Byron Robinson 400m Olympic hurdler at the Rio Games, Gregg Simmons- speed and performance specialist for elite, pro, collegiate, and youth, and Dave Nielsen – Eastern Washington Jumps Coach and former Idaho State University Head Coach (coached Olympic Pole Vault Champion Stacy Dragila).
The Big Sky State Games is hosting the 5th Annual SOAKED run at Pioneer Park on Friday, July 20 in Billings. The nontimed two mile fun run includes water features, foam machine, slip and slide and more. The first wave starts at 6:00 p.m. in Pioneer Park and ends in Daylis Stadium. The run is open to everyone; runners, walkers, fast or slow. Just be prepared to get soaked! Online registration will be accepted until July 18th. After that, register onsite at packet pick-up Thursday, July 19th at 490 N. 30th, Tranwestern Building #2 and Friday July 20 at the south east corner of Pioneer Park from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Soaked finishes in Daylis Stadium, kicking off the Big Sky State Games Opening Ceremonies. The evening includes music, food, kids events, Parade of Athletes, entertainment, torch lighting ceremony, and the Montana Mile. The 9th Annual Big Sky State Games National Anthem Contest winner is Savannah Williams of Billings. The fifteen year old recently completed her freshman year at Billings Christian School. She will sing the National Anthem at the 33rd Annual Big Sky State Games Opening Ceremonies on Friday, July 20 in Billings. Since then she has performed in numerous school Christmas programs and spring concerts with her school choir. Williams is also extremely involved in school musicals Her true passion in life is singing, other hobbies include playing the piano, volleyball and participation in Billings All-Star Cheer. Williams said, “I am beyond excited to sing the National Anthem for Opening Ceremonies.” Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the Parade of Athletes begins at 7:30 p.m. at Wendy’s Field at Daylis Stadium.

Come join us in a non-timed two mile crazy fun water walk/run around and through Pioneer Park. All ages, slow or fast are encouraged to participate. Be prepared to run through foam stations, slip and slide down the hill, jump through sprinklers and dodge water guns in this fun filled race. All proceeds will benefit the Billings Tennis Association (BTA). The BTA uses proceeds to refurbish tennis courts. BSSG Character Counts! Scholarship Winners
T
he Big Sky State Games has selected Hannah Hirschi of Skyview High School, Devin Amtmann of Butte High School, Shea Dolan of Billings West High School, Loran Murphy of Huntley Project High School, and Karter Bernhardt of Billings West High School as the recipients of the 2018 Big Sky State Games Character Counts! Scholarship. The $500 scholarship winners will be recognized at the 33rd Annual Big Sky State Games Opening Ceremonies event Friday, July 20. This year a fifth scholarship was added to be awarded in memory of BSSG Board Member Emeritus, Olympian and Montana’s First Female Governor- Judy Martz who passed away. The winners were selected based on their character, community involvement, and participation in sports. High school juniors during the 2017-2018 school year were eligible to apply for the scholarship. Selecting students who are finishing their junior year ensures the winners may be observed as role mod-
els during their senior year. Hannah Hirschi has competed in the Big Sky State Games for six years in Triathlon and four Swimming. She has earned Academic All-State in cross country, swimming and track and field. Hannah’s volunteer work has included volunteering at HIRSCHI the Billings Clinic since the eighth grade where she works in the cardiac rehab center. She also volunteers for Run For Heaven’s Sake. Devin Amtmann has participated in Big Sky State Games Swimming for nine years, Judo for nine years, and Triathlon for one year. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Science National Honor Society. AMTMANN Devin participates
in high school volleyball, swimming, tennis and softball. She has earned Academic All-State in tennis for one year, swimming for three years, and volleyball for one year. Devin volunteers for the Special Olympics, the Butte Judo Club, the local Food Bank and as a tutor in her high school. Shea Dolan is a three year Big Sky State Games participant in both Basketball and Track and Field. She also has been a volunteer for the Opening Ceremonies for three years helping the DOLAN Billings Clinic. Shea is involved in a variety of service projects and student clubs including: Key Club, Spanish Club, and National Honor Society. Some of her most notable accomplishments have been earning the YMCA Principal’s Youth Leadership Award twice, receiving the Principal’s Award at West High School, and was selected for the
Winning with Integrity Program (WIP). She was also invited to the National Student Leadership Conference in 2017 & 2018. Shea has earned Academic All State in both varsity basketball and softball every year since her freshman year. Loran Murphy has participated in Big Sky State Games Volleyball for four years and Basketball for two years. She is involved in volleyball, basketball and track and field at Huntley Project MURPHY High School. Loran is a representative for 4-H where she was Historian for two years, Vice President for two years and President for one year. She was awarded the Willingness to Help Award for three years. Loran has earned Academic All-State in volleyball for three years, basketball for three years and track and field for two years. She helped lead her volleyball team to State Championship in 2017.
Karter Bernhardt has participated in Big Sky State Games Dance Sport State for nine years, almost as long as his ten years of clogging. He has earned multiple State Games medals and Overall High Point honors. In high school he participated in football for one year and track and field for two years. BERNHARDT Karter has a 4.60 GPA and is in the West High School Platinum Program. In 2010, he was named the Billings Studio Theatre Debut Actor of the Year. He participates in Student Council as Secretary, Academic Bowl, Science Bowl as a captain, Symphonic Band, and Environmental Club. Karter’s volunteer experience includes: Billings Youth Leadership Council, local dance performances including Relay For Life, MT Fair, and Springfest. The Character Counts!
