Literary festival is one for
THE BOOKS
T
By TARA CADY tcady@billingsgazette.com
he High Plains BookFest covers the literary works of authors whose creative influences include seven regional states and three Canadian provinces. The only comparable event in the Big Sky state is Missoula’s Montana Book Festival, which doesn’t embrace as large a region, said BookFest founder and director Corby Skinner. Happening Oct. 18-20, in conjunction with the
High Plains Book Awards, BookFest centers on literature with a High Plains tie. Literary works are presented and discussed across three days at various venues, including the Western Heritage Center, Babcock Theatre, Billings Public Library, MoAV Coffee House, Yellowstone Art Museum and This House of Books. Featured authors are finalists in several categories for literary awards; some writers are more well-known than others, like Montana residents Jamie Ford and Jamie Harrison. Skinner says the event is more for the writers themselves, whose works are inspired by Montana, the Dakotas, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado,
Kansas and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The “ground” covered is more than 2 million square miles, he said. “The Canadian writers have a terrible time getting their books into the US,” said Skinner. “They’re books that we never see in the bookstore.” BookFest attempts to change that. The top three novels in each award category will be available for purchase throughout the festival. But don’t expect tables with publishers pushing sales; it’s Please see Books, 10

Books Continued from 9 not an event driven by commerce. “It’s very much about the writers and the writers to meet the audience,” Skinner said. In its 17th year, and 12th year distributing awards, BookFest follows tradition with showcasing plethora categories of literature, including: art and photography; children’s; creative nonfiction; fiction; first book; indigenous writer; medicine and science; poetry; short stories; woman writer; and young adult. Following a Montana State University Billings Library sponsorship in late 2016, last year’s event’s theme focused on indigenous writers. This year’s unofficial theme revealed itself through submissions; many submitted works were concentrated on Butte. The once-booming mining town is celebrated in detail through readings and discussion at the Babcock Theatre, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Included is commentary from Aaron Parrett and Mark Gibbons, persons who led the way toward Butte’s poet laureate Ed Lahey’s lost works being published in “Moving On: The Last Poems.” Other finalist authors with a Montana tie include Bill Jones, the late Randall Gloege, Theodore Waddell, Rick Newby, Giano Cromley and John Clayton. The awards banquet is sold out, but there’s plenty of public events to attend. A detailed schedule of events is available at highplainsbookawards.org.

Asylum Distillery is downtown’s newest distillery located at 2223 Montana Ave., Suite 101.
Asylum Distillery goes stir crazy By CHARITY DEWING cdewing@billingsgazette.com
H
ave you ever toured an old jail, touched the cell doors, studied the photos of the inmates and wondered about their story? Owners Robert Ochsner and Ted Reichert have brought a similar concept to the Asylum Distillery, located at 2223 Montana Ave, Suite 101.
Ochsner initially saw potential in renovating a former asylum for the distillery. When plans fell through, Ochsner and Reichert wanted to bring the asylum concept to a new location. When you walk into Asylum Distillery, the first thing you notice is the giant electric chair in the corner. The second is the bar scattered with authentic photos of asylum inmates. “The dead can tell some stories, too,”
said Ochsner. An asylum is defined as a retreat, refuge and shelter. Unlike the photos displayed on the bar, the unique and relaxing environment of Asylum Distillery offers a far more accurate description of the word’s definition. And just outside, a large patio space calls to the urban side of downtown Billings. Patrons can indulge in signature drinks that are handcrafted at the distillery, like The Waverly Hills, Straight Jacket Spiced
or Vanilla Rum, and moonshine with root beer, watermelon and orange flavors. “We wanted high-quality taste. People don’t expect to like moonshine and they are always pleasantly surprised,” said Reichert. Reichert specialized in moonshine, while Ochsner is a gin, rum and vodka expert who crafts simple and easy recipes. Asylum Distillery is open from 4-8 p.m., daily. To soothe your troubled mind, Asylum is sharing one of its new drinks recipes.
It’s fun. It’s stylish. ...and it’s all about making you look your best!
Between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. daily, customers can take their drinks outside on the patio.
Watermelon Moscow Mule Ingredients: 1 oz. Asylum Watermelon Moonshine 1/2 oz. fresh lime juice 3 oz. ginger beer Lime wedge and fresh ginger for garnish Directions: Fill a cocktail shaker with three-quarters ice, combine 1 ounce Asylum Watermelon Moonshine with lime juice and shake about 15 seconds. Strain into a mug, preferably copper, filled with crushed ice. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with lime and fresh mint.
259-3624 2814 2nd Ave N Billings, MT Included on the drink menu is a Watermelon Moscow Mule.

MINT Festival promotes art, fosters humanity T
By CHARITY DEWING cdewing@billingsgazette.com
he show might not go on anywhere else but the Montana International Film Festival. With up to 55 films showing across three days, international cinema finds its place at 2905 Mon-
tana Ave., The Babcock Theatre and Arthouse Cinema and Pub. Perhaps the only time to see lesser-known movies in Billings and beyond, the festival is a must-see for movie buffs. Organized by Brian Murnion, filmmaker and festival director of MINT, and Ryan Kabeary, manager at Art House Cinema
and Pub, the film festival takes place Sept. 14-16. “We received 300 submissions internationally. Our goal was 250. I am really proud of that and we are so excited,” said Murnion. In an age where people are connecting less face-to-face, we often lose empathy. The
hope is that selected movies will generate more compassion and inspiration. “We are committed to curating the best indie films from around the world by filmmakers of any background or experience. We care about films that have a strong narrative core, characters with emotional depth, and the ability to push creative, technical or social
boundaries,” said Murnion. Murnion wants to draw people in and nurture artistic growth throughout the region. “Community doesn’t stop at county lines,” Murnion said. “It ripples out and creates empathy and a level of goodness that affects people outside of Yellowstone County.” Film categories include narrative films; documentary films; short films, both narrative and documentary. The festival has eight award categories, including the MINT Spirit Award; Montana Spirit Award; Best Female Director; Best Narrative Feature; Best Documentary Feature; Best Narrative Short Film; Best Documentary Short Film; and Best Junior Filmmaker’s Short Film. The Montana Film Office will also host four panel discussions, one being women in film. “It has been a male-dominated industry but women have really broken through,” said Murnion. Murnion says that filmmakers can change the world with well-done cinema that resonates, that calls to our own altruism and motivates progression. “Art should champion humanity,” said Murnion. “Film is important that way.” Opening night kicks off Sept. 14, with a red carpet event at the Babcock Theatre including screenings and an after party. The cinematic magic continues Sept. 15 with screenings beginning at 10 a.m., and panel discussions throughout the day featuring women in cinema, Native Americans in cinema and film directors, all at the Babcock
Theatre. The festival comes to a close Sept. 16 with screenings in the morning and afternoon at Art House Cinema, Babcock Theatre and 2905 with an awards ceremony and after-party at Doc Harper’s Tavern. Tickets and passes are available online. Single program tickets are $12 and opening night film and festival ceremony tickets are $20. Three-film passes are $30; fivefilm passes are $50; student passes are $75; teacher passes are $85; full festival passes are $100; and VIP festival passes are $250. Screenings will be held at the Babcock Theatre, Art House Cinema and 2905. For more information on MINT, show times and volunteer opportunities go to mintfilmfestival.org.

If you go to TEN at the Northern, you’d better be hungry. The all-American 48-oz. bone-in ribeye is first grilled, then marked and followed by an oven-finish for a perfect sear. If you have room for dessert, pair this incredible meal with the Big Sky High apple pie and Montana craft beer.
Back on the new menu at Stella’s is the mouthwatering, crisp-on-the-outside and fluffy-in-the-middle waffle. Make it your way with choices of an apple cinnamon, chokecherry, huckleberry or strawberry topping or with tried-and-true butter and maple syrup. Pair with eggs and bacon or enjoy all by itself.
You don’t have to decide on one entrée at Guadalajara. Try a classic combination platter of beef tacos and beef, chicken or cheese enchiladas. The authentic Mexican cuisine comes with flavorsome heaps of Spanish rice, pinto beans and melted cheddar cheese.

Can’t decide between pasta or streak for dinner – why not have both? Jake’s steak caprese has tender bits of steak glazed in a delicious cream sauce with delectable fire-roasted tomatoes and mozzarella, basil and cavatappi noodles.
A sweet finish tops off a scrumptious meal. At Bin 119, you can go big or small and then go home. The house cheesecake comes in a variety of luscious flavors to indulge in, but you also can’t go wrong with crème brulee. Equally delicious is the chocolate ballerina cup filled with milk-chocolate mousse and strawberries.
Meat and potatoes take on new meaning with Commons 1882’s boneless beef short rib. Served with mashed potatoes, green beans and beef jus, this classic Montana dish is great for the gluten-sensitive. Add a glass of vino, draft beer or specialty cocktail for a refreshing finishing touch.
