GIVING BACK GUARANTEES HOLIDAY CHEER By CHARITY DEWING cdewing@billingsgazette.com

Imagine being a child waking on Christmas morning to a barren tree, if a tree at all. Imagine being a parent unable to give their child a holiday dinner, let alone a gift. Imagine being alone, cold and hungry at a time meant for family, warmth and food. For many Billings residents, this is their reality. For 112 years, Family Service has met the needs of individuals and families in Billings. Charam Orth, development director at Family Service, says this year the need for assistance is greater than previous years. “There is a growing epidemic of working poor and working homeless,” said Orth. “We have seniors trying to make a can of soup last for three meals.” Some of them are trying to live off of $450 a month – that’s just not possible.” While residents struggle to make ends meet, downtown nonprofits work diligently to help when and where they can. Family Service provides boxes with 100 pounds of food,

including meat, cheese, eggs, vegetables, peanut butter, milk, canned foods, breads and more. Boxes vary according to family size. In addition, Family Service also assists with rent and utilities. Monetary donations in check form are best, as the facility cannot take food donations. Orth says the cost of living mixed with low-paying jobs is much of the reason Billings’ residents suffer from poverty. “There are people trying to survive on minimum wage in a housing market they cannot afford,” said Orth. Family Service offers extra holiday meal boxes for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They also participate in Toys for Tots with nonprofit, St. Vincent de Paul. Toys can be dropped off at both downtown locations. “We make our own version of a Toys R Us,” said Vicki Massie, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul. This year, St. Vincent de Paul and Family Service will host the event from Dec. 11-15, at MetraPark.

Nonprofit Continued from 9 “Parents have an hour to walk the aisles and pick out gifts for their children,” said Massie. For the event organizers, it was important that parents could personalize gifts for their children rather than have unknown or not age-appropriate gifts delivered. “We need donations from newborn to age 18. The older kids get forgotten about,” said Massie. Family Service also offers a program called, “Adopt a Family.” Interested participants are assigned a needy family, providing their holiday meal, clothing and children’s gifts. The needs of Billings’ homeless population continue after the holidays. Downtown nonprofits operate across the full calendar year. From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday, guests can have hot coffee, continental breakfast and lunch at St. Vincent de Paul. “We encourage them to stay, play games, do puzzles, read and talk,” said Massie. Resource workers, physicians and Job Services Workforce Center representatives visit St. Vincent de Paul to assist in any way they can – volunteering their time and specialties to help those in need. St. Vincent de Paul also has a thrift store, the shelter’s largest source of income. The store and shelter employs many of its guests, providing a stepping stone to a better life. “But, it’s minimum wage. Many work full-time here, but it’s hard to make it with low-income,” said Massie. Denise Smith, director of public relations with the Montana Rescue Mission, understands the trials of homelessness and needy all too well. “We provide basic human needs: shelter, food, clothing,” said Smith. The process of staying at the shelter is far more complex since guests can become residents. Guests need to be evaluated by physicians, have background checks and undergo an interview process before entering the MRM. “Every guest’s needs are unique. Some are vets that need access to certain agencies, some are single mothers dealing with child support issues, others are disabled and we help them connect with the right re-

sources,” said Smith. Once admitted, Smith and MRM staff work with new guests to get them prepared for a new life. Responsibilities include chores and working with a caseworker to find employment. For many men, women and families residing at the MRM, the stigma they face is challenging enough. The holidays can be even harder to manage. “Volunteering during the holidays to serve a meal is what everyone wants to do around Christmas,” said Smith. “The impoverished community in Billings goes unrecognized and many people struggle silently,” said Orth. “We run out of supplies. We never turn people away but sometimes we do not have everything they need and it’s heartbreaking.” While all three facilities work to help the needy in Billings, they all

say that it goes beyond the winter season. Massie and Smith agree that giving back is more than one day of volunteering or donating. Giving back to our community is a call to humanity – to our own and to recognize it in the impoverished. “When you see someone who has nothing open a Christmas gift, you see it – they suddenly realized someone cares about them, some-

one sees them as a human being,” said Smith. A word often heard among the homeless and poverty-stricken community is “hopeless.” While many are working to better their lives, sometimes it takes an extra miracle. Giving back comes in many forms. Volunteering can include answering phones, sorting donations or directly engaging with the less

fortunate. “We welcome people to come and spend time with our guests,” said Massie. “Loneliness and hopelessness can be debilitating.” Volunteers with professional specialties are always in-demand. “We had a barber volunteer to come down and gave everyone free

haircuts,” said Smith. “It made such a difference in their quality of life.” Electricians, handymen, hairstylists and even performers are welcome to volunteer their expertise. “Sometimes we cannot afford maintenance or repairs to our fa-

cility, so if a professional would volunteer their time to help fix things, it really helps,” said Smith. Downtown nonprofits like Family Service, St. Vincent de Paul and the MRM offer hope. With help from the Billings community, everyday living for many becomes transformed.

NOW SHOWING The Babcock Theatre returns The Babcock Theatre marquee now displays first-run, box office movies.

The Art House Cinema & Pub is postponing booking new events at the Babcock Theatre for at least six months following the theater’s November reopening.

By TARA CADY tcady@billingsgazette.com Dreams of dinner and a movie downtown are coming true. What Billings residents remember as a thing of the past has returned November 2018 as the newly managed and renovated Babcock Theatre. h e T Babcock, located at 2812 2nd Ave. N., maintains its cinematic history thanks to Art House Cinema & Pub. Committed to a 15-year lease with the City, Art House takes its caretaker role seriously. Ahead of its reopening, the Babcock received modern amenities and preservation measures to ensure it ages well into the future. “It’s meant to be a movie theater, but Billings doesn’t really know it as such,” said Art

House marketing and events director, Brittany Stevens. The Babcock now rivals West End theater complexes; its production, projector and screen are second best to IMAX, Stevens said. And with 750 seats, it is the largest theater in Billings and the largest cinema in Montana, she added. Families can flock to the theater for its first-run, box office movies. Offerings are dependent on contracts, but Art House is hopeful to have “Aquaman” and “Mary Poppins Returns” listed on the marquee soon. Once selected, one or two movies will play daily for up to six weeks at the Babcock. This makes the theater more user-friendly for busy families, Stevens said.

After purchasing tickets online or at the ticket booth on Second Avenue North, popcorn, beer, wine and more await at the renovated concessions stand. Designed to replicate the theater’s gold and navy blue scaffolding, the concessions stand feels authentic. Like the Art House, the Babcock opens 30 minutes prior to the first film showing of the day. It is then when patrons can walk up to the ticket booth, as was done between the ‘30s and ‘80s, and proceed to the popcorn station inside. Made with coconut oil, popcorn comes customizable with varying butter, garlic and herb, Sriracha, cinnamon and sugar, and Parmesan cheese toppings. Volunteers handle ticketing, concessions and other theater operations. “We’re always looking for volunteers,” said Stevens, who started as a volunteer

Know the difference While both managed by the same people, the Art House Cinema & Pub and Babcock Theatre are two different downtown venues. The Art House Cinema & Pub is an independent, nonprofit theater located at 109 N. 30th St. It features two films weekly, which are usually independent films or classics worth revisiting. The all-ages venue is focused on introducing thought-provoking films that share culture and

Besides previously agreed upon arrangements, new special events or concerts won’t be held at the Babcock for at least the next six months, Stevens said. Simultaneous with the Babcock’s reopening is the Art House’s ongoing fundraiser for expansion. “The Babcock is only part of what’s to come,” said Stevens.
