Walkin’ on sunshine Walkers’ ingredients for the season By TARA CADY tcady@billingsgazette.com With heavy snow came heartier meals at Walkers Grill. But now with early-evening sun shining in on the dinner-only restaurant at 2700 1st Ave. N., lighter options grace the plates. Head chef Nick Steen awaits local farmers’ calls to determine menu offerings, which change daily. By late May, morel mushrooms will be eaten up, but those still hungry can have softer greens, like Hakurei turnips in June, as well as apples and peaches in August. Steen says a peach and fish combination is wonderful; the menu features a fresh (fish) catch of the day, plus meat and pasta daily specials. Whatever’s in-season not only can be ate, but drank, as many ingredients are incorporated into cocktails. If Steen takes a 40-pound batch of purple asparagus, for example, expect some to garnish a Bloody Mary. But what makes Walkers a destination in summertime is that it’s in the heart of downtown, where it’s been for the last 25 years. While dining on local produce, guests can watch the action outside through
the restaurant’s gaping windows, or witness Walkers come alive inside with music on Sundays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Local band John Roberts y Pan Blanco makes regular appearances. Seattle-based duo, Sundae + Mr. Goessl, returns Sunday, June 24, to Walkers with a taste of what won them the Best Jazz Act of 2017 award from Seattle Weekly. Also on the summer events lineup is Alive After 5; Walkers plays host to a free Thursday night concert on the street outside the restaurant, July 12. As to why Walkers remains a dinner-only venue, Steen says it’s because you go out for the experience of dinner, but not for lunch. “If you want to come out for something special, you come here,” he said. Walkers is open 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 4 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday; 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday; and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. As an added treat, Walkers has shared one of its upcoming summer drink recipes with readers.

30 years of SpringFest at Moss Mansion
By TARA CADY tcady@billingsgazette.com In 1989, the Moss Mansion introduced to downtown Billings the Moss Mansion Country Fair. Volunteer Stacey Jacobs was a mansion tour guide then. When she was approached to head the mansion’s fair in 2006, it was a natural fit. The longtime volunteer transformed the fair into a juried art show to improve the overall quality and balance of purchasable crafts. What was intended to be a two-year stint turned into more than a decade of chairing one of the mansion’s largest annual fundraisers. In 2009, the fair changed its name to SpringFest, acknowledging that it wasn’t so country anymore. Since then, entertainment and vendors have only improved. On Saturday, June 2, the Moss Mansion will celebrate 30 years of its arts and crafts fair. While admission is free to the event, proceeds from artist booth fees and food and drink sales go toward the nonprofit’s preservation of the historical grounds and programming. There is also a donation jar at the entrance. The day begins with a pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Then from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 45 selected artists from Montana and Wyoming feature homemade crafts like jewelry, leather, metal sculpture, pottery, painting and soap. Some artists even hold demonstrations. Food booths include tacos, barbecue, homemade baked goods, drinks, kettle corn and Brockel’s Chocolates. But SpringFest isn’t just for shopping and eating, it’s also for enjoying entertainment on historical grounds

2905 hosts various art exhibits during ArtWalk. MSUB art students recently took up space with an interactive display that encouraged spectators to participate.
Photos courtesy of 2905
Behind the art scene at 2905 By CHARITY DEWING cdewing@billingsgazette.com Before the wine is poured and hors d’oeuvres are neatly displayed, Billings ArtWalk galleries prepare months in advance for the event that showcases local artists. 2905 has risen in popularity as one of the premier art galleries on Montana Avenue.
Two years ago, Grace Kim and husband, Bryan Stafford, purchased 2905 Montana Ave. Although the gallery has been a part of ArtWalk intermittently since, this is its first year as official fulltime members of the event. “We originally operated Billings Open Studio and had people approach us about using that as an event venue, something
that didn’t work in that space. So when we first saw the building that became 2905, we thought that would be perfect to function as a venue for smaller events and so set about remodeling the space for that purpose,” said Kim. Commonly, Kim and Stafford seek out established artists for 2905 but they also provide open-call opportunities for all art-
ists, novice to expert, to display their work. Having open invitations allows first-timers the big break they have been working towards. “We have put out an open call on Facebook for people interested in exhibiting and we took the first eight people that answered. That was just an open opportunity for anyone that wanted to exhibit,” said Kim.

“2905 is a non-traditional gallery space,” said 2905 artist coordinator Jodi Lightner. An interactive display created by MSUB students using water guns is one example of the venue’s unique atmosphere.
Although the gallery offers exhibits year-round, Kim and Stafford are frequently contacted directly by artists to be featured for ArtWalk. That is where much of the process begins. “2905 is a non-traditional gallery space,” said Jodi Lightner, artist coordinator. “Contrary to a typical commercial gallery, artists frequently contact us directly to request the use of Art 2905 for ArtWalk or other pop-up exhibitions during the month. The initiative in many times is on the part of an artist who wants to show their work.” With only six ArtWalks a year, submissions are plentiful. The first thing an artist wants to do is submit a proposal for the gallery space, including their vision of how the space would be used. “My goal is to schedule a variety of contemporary art exhibitions featuring local artists as well as groups of artists,” said Lightner.
“MSUB art students have exhibited in the space several times in the past.” Lightner wants to showcase a large variety of what the Billings art community has to offer. Selecting the work is all about presenting fascinating and original art that causes viewers to pause and question. Displaying the art is another delicate method in itself. What many spectators do not know is the amount of logistical considerations the artists apply with site installation. Installation and presentation is where art and observer form a relationship. “I highly encourage artists to consider an exhibition that provides the viewer with a variety of ways to see and makes it a unique experience. It is gratifying to find creative solutions for exhibiting nontraditional or 3D art and we ask our artists to make the space their own so that they have control over how
their work is viewed,” said Lightner. When the moment finally arrives and the gallery opens, the vulnerability of the artist is on display as much as the artwork. The trifecta of artist, craft and observer finally merge to form a powerful exchange. “There is always something magical about having a new exhibition. I think that it is important for artists to have the opportunity to see their work exhibited and to present their ideas visually,” said Lightner. Lightner, who is an artist and art educator, has a natural inclination to foster art and culture in Billings. 2905 allows new artists a place and opportunity to share their work. For aspiring artists, Lightner offers a piece of advice: “Find a space and plan a show. Search until you find the space that suits your work the best, ask for critiques so you can continually improve your work, and never give up.”

In 2018, monies raised at the longstanding Billings Clinic Classic will help the Billings Clinic Foundation with its $4 million Pediatric Specialty Care Initiative. According to the Billings Clinic’s website, the initiative includes a plan to expand the Billings Clinic’s pediatric specialty medicine clinic, upgrade its neonatal intensive care unit and advance its pediatric telehealth program. The Billings Clinic Classic commences Friday, Aug. 17, with a women’s golf tournament in scramble format at Laurel Golf Club. The shotgun start begins at 8:30 a.m. An open golf tournament follows Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Powder Horn Country Club in Sheridan, Wyo.
