Emmanuel Baptist Church is

with

Dr. Paul Jones!

Pastor Paul Jones Paul was born Don Paul Jones to Don and Gloria Jones, July 1959, in Portales, New Mexico, the first of three children. Paul’s family lived in several locations while he was growing up. His parents, Don and Gloria are gifted spiritual leaders who were very capable of moving into small, struggling churches and strengthening them, as well as overseeing the actual construction of some new church buildings. Upon completion of a project, Paul’s parents would often move and reproduce that model with another congregation. They eventually found themselves serving at Emmanuel, where Don served as Emmanuel’s fifth Lead Pastor from 1979 to 1992. Both remain active at Emmanuel, and Dr. Don Jones continues to serve as one of Emmanuel’s elders. Paul found himself highly involved in these same churches while growing up. He gave his life to the Lord at an early age in Canon City, Colorado. While serving and growing in the Lord, he had not yet been called to the ministry, but he found opportunities to serve in just about every position within church life, not knowing that God was using this willingness to lay a strong foundation for this future missionary and pastor. After his 1977 graduation from East High School, Cheyenne, Wyoming, Paul attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA where he earned a B.S. in Political Science. Paul’s ambition at that time was to attend law school. But at this juncture in his pilgrimage, he became aware of a program sponsored by the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention called Journeyman Missionary. This was a two-year commitment to the mission field available to college graduates who were willing to serve abroad. Paul was commissioned in the summer of 1981 and served for the next two years in South Africa where he participated in mass evangelism, university student work, and church-starting. He also began a Bible correspondence school. It was while Paul was serving in South Africa that he felt a strong call to full-time ministry. Since Emmanuel was his home church at that time, he made his decision public with the congregation, upon his return

to the states in 1983. Soon after, he was licensed and ordained to the Gospel Ministry. Also upon his return, Paul served as the Youth Pastor for Emmanuel from 1983 to 1985. Believing that he still needed some additional preparation, Paul left Billings to attend Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, Memphis, Tennessee in 1985, graduating with a Masters in Divinity in 1989. During those years in seminary, Paul was more than a student. He served as Associate Pastor at First Baptist Church, Millington, Tennessee. At the conclusion of his seminary work, Emmanuel called Paul back to assist his father as co-pastor. Don and Paul began to co-pastor together in 1989 and worked to restructure Emmanuel for the next three years. Those first three years included streamlining the budget and securing an interest-free loan for the remainder of the building indebtedness, which allowed the debt to be retired in five years. Probably the most note-worthy accomplishment from 2007 to 2009 was the building project that added a new worship auditorium, nursery, and education space. This expansion nearly doubled the useable space of the previous facility and has enabled Emmanuel to reach and teach even more people in the Yellowstone Valley. As Emmanuel’s sixth pastor, Paul continues to preach, teach, and oversee all of the church’s ministries. In 2010 he earned his PhD in Church History, writing his dissertation on how to restart dead and dying churches, something that Emmanuel has been actively involved with for several years. The size of the staff, as well as the church attendance, has increased substantially under Pastor Paul’s leadership.

Meet Our Elders Dr. McDonald Held grew up as the son of a Baptist Pastor in Texas who was a leader in ministry innovation. This provided Dr. Held with a rich Christian heritage that prepared him for future spiritual leadership. Dr. Dr. McDonald Held Held served many years as a college professor, spending 30 of his 45 years of higher education in Southern Baptist Institutions including Baylor, Louisiana College and Furman. He came to MSU-B in 1971 (Eastern Montana College) to be its first chairman of Speech, Communications and Theatre Arts. Dr. Held was on the search committee that brought Dr. Don Jones to Emmanuel as pastor. He served for many years as the chairman of our missions committee resulting in our strong missional approach to ministry to this very day. In fact, our annual mission offering is named after him. He was influential in establishing the Yellowstone Baptist College (now Yellowstone Christian College) and served as its president until 1981. He was ordained by Emmanuel and pastored in Hinsdale, MT returning to Emmanuel to serve as our Senior Adult Pastor until 2004. He has been married to Beverly for 74 years! They have five children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dr. Held will turn 105 years old in October.

Dr. Don Jones served as Emmanuel’s fifth pastor, beginning in 1979. In 1989 Paul Jones was called to join his father to serve as co-pastor. After three years of serving together, Pastor Don resigned to go into full time evangeDr. Don Jones lism in July 1992. He was granted a Doctorate of Eschatology degree from International Seminary, Plymouth, Florida in June 1997. In 1998, Dr. Jones published his first book, Layman’s Commentary on Revelation. He followed with a 2nd edition and Study Guide to accompany it in June 2013. He continues to bless Emmanuel with his faithful teaching of God’s word and mentoring our present staff of pastors by serving as an Elder. Don has been married to Gloria for 58 years. They have three children, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

in a number of Southern Baptist churches with age groups ranging from 4th graders through Senior Adults. When Bill’s company transferred him to Billings in 1991, he and his family moved their membership to Emmanuel. In 1998, Bill began to teach the Senior Adult Sunday School class. After his retirement from his job in 2002, Pastor Paul asked Bill to pray about joining the Pastoral Staff as Shepherding Pastor. Initially, he struggled with not having a seminary degree and assuming the role of Pastor; however, through much prayer, Bill resolved his “layman’s background thinking” by remembering how God moved the Apostle Paul to call Barnabus and Timothy to assist him in building churches and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In agreement to his personal commitment in 1991 to help Pastor Paul, and in obedience to God’s calling, Bill completed his tenth anniversary as Shepherding Pastor on May 23, 2014. Bill has been married to Vivien for 47 years. Together they have two children and three grandchildren.

SALT Emmanuel genuinely values senior adults and recognizes the depth of wisdom and experience each one brings to the congregation. While many churches are decreasing and even eliminating ministries geared for senior adults, Emmanuel is consistently increasing this ministry and has seen tremendous growth in the last few years under the leadership of Pastor Bill Swant and his wife, Vivien. The Senior Adult group enjoys worship, fellowship and Bible Study every Sunday.

Here is what Pastor Bill had to say about the Senior Adult Ministry: “In American culture today, youth is held in highest esteem; however, the Bible is clear that we are to nourish and restore Senior Adults because the Lord expects them to bring forth much fruit in their old age. Our ministry is dedicated to honor and encourage our Senior Adults to age gracefully and be all that they can be in service to the Lord.”

MEET THE HALOS Halos Baseball is a ministry of Emmanuel Baptist Church and has been so for the last 14 years. The program has evolved over the years but the program Mission “To Honor Christ Thru the Vessel of Baseball” is and has remained the foundation of the program. The Halos program field two competitive teams that compete against the best teams available in this region. Both teams have had success both on and off the field winning several Legion Tournaments, seeing 45 players over the last 14 years receive scholarships to play baseball in college. The program also has a focus to teach players excellent baseball techniques and values taught in Biblical studies. The program place high value on morals and ethics which has attracted many players who have consistent belief systems. Our Mission is to Honor Christ through the Vessel of Baseball but the objective is to win every time we step between the lines. This is a very competitive team similar to the local Legion teams versus other alternatives locally of being a team focusing on participation. As a result, the selection process is competitive and objective with consideration for those interested in spiritual development. 2014 is seeing the Halos and the Angels with a serious willing record as we mold teams that will carry the values and morals they learn beyond the program.

Missions Ministry When core values are listed, Missions would be high on Emmanuel’s list! The church is highly committed to mission efforts in our city, region, North America, and around the globe. Lead Pastor Paul Jones spent two years as a missionary in South Africa with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through the SBC’s Cooperative Program, Emmanuel along with sister churches from around the country support thousands of missionaries worldwide. In addition, Emmanuel directly supports 15 missionaries & organizations that have ties to the church. Of the seven continents, Emmanuel has a direct influence on four of them. Over the years, Emmanuel has partnered to plant churches across Montana. Most recently, they have sponsored Elevation here in Billings Heights and Crossroads in Bozeman. Work groups also travel to assist smaller churches that need some extra hands. Locally, various small groups and individuals do commu-

nity service and outreach projects. Financial gifts given at Christmas programs over the years have been given to the local Montana Rescue Mission. Mission teams have traveled in recent years to Brazil and Toronto. New partnerships have begun with church planters and missionaries in Vancouver, British Columbia. Emmanuel plans several mission trips there in 2015. One such partner in Vancouver is a Chinese church planter who has planted 4 churches over the past 12 years. Adopting an Unreached People Group in one part of the world is a desire of Emmanuel in the coming years.

Worship Ministry What Eddie Frank brings to Emmanuel is an extensive musical and technical expertise, along with an undeniable passion for worship. Eddie oversees all of the elements of worship including sound, light, video and our Creative Team. He works directly with our Lead Pastor to integrate these elements thematically into each sermon series and special emphasis.
