There’s something for everyone at the Rosebud-Treasure County Fair! Here’s a rundown of what you will find at the fair. Grandstand entertainment! On Friday, July 18, plan to be here for our 4th annual Ranch Rodeo! Come and watch local talent compete against contestants from around the region in events such as wild cow milking, team doctoring, bronc riding and much more. The action can be unpredictable, competitive and often hilarious. It all begins at 7 p.m. on Friday in the grandstand. General admission tickets are available now at the fair office or online at rosebudcountyfair.com. Saturday night, July 19, country music returns to the fair stage at 8 p.m. with a great concert. This year we’re featuring a true music legend Charlie Daniels and The Charlie Daniels Band. Charlie will play all his hits like “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” “Fire On The Mountain” and many, many more. Tickets for various areas of the grandstand, bleachers and floor seats range from $27 down to $20. Prices are higher on the day of the show so get your tickets early! Tickets are available at the fair office or online at rosebudcountyfair.com.

Fun for free! Grandstand entertainment kicks off on Thursday night with a first time event—The Rosebud County Team Roping. Come and see area ropers do their thing at 7 p.m. on Thursday night, July 17. Entry begins at 6 p.m. with the roping beginning at 7 p.m. Grandstand admission for this event is FREE, so come and go as you please. We’re also working on a Kids’ Stick Horse Rodeo to take place at the same time. More details to come. Check rosebudcountyfair.com for updates. Our Free Stage offers a great lineup of entertainment as always. Thanks to generous donations, a group of sponsored picnic tables will be placed in the tent so you can grab a meal, head over to the tent and enjoy your food while watching the show in the shade. The Free Stage area also makes a great meeting place due to its central location near the carnival and grandstand. For country music lovers, and for the first time at our fair, Montana’s own Dakota Country will be performing several shows a day and will also do late evening shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so the party should last well into the night. For magic fans, The Magic of Keith Raymond will return to the fair this year. Keith will bring his ever-growing collection of illusions to our Free Stage. Keith will also do some strolling magic so be ready for him to pop up anywhere, anytime. He’ll also open the show on Saturday for Charlie Daniels. New to the fair this year, hypnotist Chris Mabrey brings his edgy, clean, high energy and best of all, fun show to our stage. Chris will do two shows each day of the fair, so get your friends together and get hypnotized. The smaller kids will love Curly’s Funtastic Kid Zone, a free supervised play area just for them. Over a dozen different games and activities will keep the kids busy while the adults tour the exhibition hall, visit with friends, or wander over to the concession area for food and refreshments. The Kid Zone will be open noon until 8 p.m. each day of the fair. Uncle Curly the clown will also stroll the grounds every day, and will feature the “Balloon-a-Palooza” area where kids can create their own balloon animals. The Kid Zone will be located just inside the front gate across from the Exhibition Hall.

Everything else Visit the air conditioned Exhibition Hall to view 4-H and open class entries and plenty of commercial exhibits. Most judging will be completed by Friday so stop in and see how your favorites did. The Exhibition Hall is open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. each day of the fair. On Saturday, take in the 4-H Market Stock Sale, and stock your freezer while you help a 4-H’er plan for the future. The Young Men’s Club Beer Booth will be open all four days. And be sure to visit the pavilion just east of the Exhibition Hall where you will find souvenirs, political information and, maybe best of all, some welcome shade for relaxing. The Mighty Thomas Carnival makes another return to our midway with classic and modern rides to keep the kids busy all weekend, and games galore, too. Rides featured this year may include the Zipper, Gravitron, SuperShot, Barrelo-Fun, Tornado, Century Wheel and of course an array of kiddie rides too. You can play Knights of Columbus Bingo next to the concession stand on Friday and Sunday afternoons during the fair. Bingo will be played from 2 to 6 p.m. on Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Sunday morning, Gospel music will return to the fair in a free performance courtesy of the Johnson Brothers band. Relax under the big tent and be inspired. Music begins at 9 a.m. Of course the best part of the fair is socializing and meeting old and new friends. To make the good times roll, all you need is “fair food.” It’s not fair time without 4-H concessions featuring those famous fair-burgers, and there will be an array of other food vendors including Thomas Carnival’s Midway Grill featuring burgers, fries, corndogs and funnel cakes, and the Cola Corner in the Exhibition Hall sponsored by Forsyth FFA featuring homemade goodies. There will be other food vendors on the grounds too, so come and see what you can find. For those needing ready cash, there will be two ATMs located near the fair office and 4-H concession area. There may be other attractions and events not listed here, so make plans now to spend a day or two (or three) at the fairgrounds and see what you can discover. It all adds up to one of the best county fairs around, and it all comes with free gate admission and no parking fees! We hope to see you at the fair this July!

The schedule of events is continually being updated. Check www.rosebudcountyfair.com for updates. Find us on Facebook where we will post more updates before and during the fair. www.facebook.com/rosebudcountyfair

Bob Watts Murals

A casual walk down Main Street will lead you to downtown Forsyth, home of a growing collection of giant murals by local artist Bob Watts. Murals such as “The Phantom” and “Big Mack” will amaze you with their size and artistry. The Phantom Forsyth’s first gigantic art mural by artist Bob Watts relates to a time when the town took roots encouraged by the railroad. It portrays one of the first steam locomotive trains to come through the area on its way to the west coast. At last the connection was made from the east coast to the west. The locomotive was built in Tounton, Mass. in 1857 by the Wm. Mason & Co. builders. The railroad was the biggest thing in the county at that time and a highly competitive business. They advertised their locomotives by elaborate coloring and brass work which allowed the artist to capture the true beauty of the iron giants. The entire summer of 2006 was spent on this creation. It was painted on the outside of the 100 year old Royal Oaks Inn, the housing for railroad workers. The surrounding landscape depicts the western plains and includes two buffalo in the detailed foreground. They would rather be anywhere else than where such a smoking noisy creature rattled along on their prairie land.

Big Mack The fourth mural in Forsyth depicts the lumber industry in Montana. Three large windows needed to remain functional in the wall and had to be incorporated into the design of the picture plan. One window became the grill of a logging truck and another portrays a stack of tie posts, while still another is the open doorway of the lumber shed. The painted open doorway next to that shows the first fire truck used by the local fire department. The north wall of the fire station is adjacent to the Forsyth lumber yard. The mural, sponsored by the Forsyth Hardware & Home Center, relates well with the lumber items in the yard. The painting includes a forklift in action, and the mill in the background is the Yellowstone Pine Sawmill, long since dismantled, where the artist worked while attending college. The mountains and timbered area suggest the western part of the great state of Montana.
