The call of the wild permeates Red Lodge this October By Brenda Maas bmaas@billingsgazette.com Montana means wilderness to many— residents and visitors alike. But sometimes that wilderness, and its inhabitants, needs a little bit of help. The Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary (YWS) is home to more than 70 animals who have been hurt, socialized by humans or permanently disabled and cannot be returned to the wild. As the only public refuge in Montana, the Sanctuary fills a great need.Yet, the “resident” animals themselves act as ambassadors to help their own kind. These mammals, birds and reptiles are the real, live educational component of the Sanctuary. Just having a close look at Bobbie Sioux, the bobcat, for example might prompt a visitor to wonder where these cats live, what do they eat and why are they so shy? That sort of questioning helps fulfill the Sanctuary’s mission to educate the public about the protection and conservation of Yellowstone wildlife and their natural habitats. Dinner for a cause On October 5, take an opportunity to support the YWS by attending the annual “Feasts for the Beasts” at Rock Creek Resort. This year’s event will again include an invitation for optional costumes. According the Sanctuary’s executive director, Michelle Marion, the costume contest was very well received last year. “A lot of the guests really got into the costumes, and we had so many good ones that it was difficult to judge,” she said. “It was awesome.” Although there were costumes of many types, an animal theme dominated; the “guests” included a raccoon, a jellyfish and a hand-made pink flamingo. The YWS Board will again serve as judges and award prizes in a variety of categories.

A VIP pre-event starts at 4 p.m. and includes wine tasting, some one-on-one with YWS residents and a guest speaker. The VIP event offers a more intimate look at what is going at the Sanctuary, Marion noted, and is very popular. “Last year we invited a cinematographer from National Geographic, and the presentation was spectacular,” she said. The event commences at 6 p.m. and will include dinner, a silent auction, a live auction, a raffle and, of course, dancing. Tickets are $100 for VIPs or $50 for just dinner and dancing. Raffle ticket sales will continue into December, with the grand prize being a 7-night stay at a five-star resort in California, including a $500 meal stipend and $300 spa stipend. Tickets are $10 each or six tickets for $50. All proceeds from the raffle will be returned to the Sanctuary. Current projects include improving the safety of walkways for visitors and also replacing an aged barn and renovating a second barn. In addition, improved signage will help direct visitors and further promote the educational component of the Sanctuary. These improvements are important and will enhance both the safety and visual appearance of the Sanctuary, said Marion. In addition, funds raised at Feasts for the Beasts will ensure that the YWS continues to provide the nurturing environment for its furry and feathered residents while educating visitors about the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem right here. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call (406) 446-1133 or visit the Sanctuary at 615 2nd St. E. in Red Lodge.

Feasts for the Beasts

Opening weekend at RLM is as sure as the Thanksgiving turkey By Brenda Maas bmaas@billingsgazette.com The dog days of summer may be a very recent memory but….wait for it…Opening Day at Red Lodge Mountain (RLM) will soon be here. Can we get a “ya-hoo!”? Or, maybe, two? Paul Otsu, marketing coordinator for Red Lodge Mountain, confirmed that Opening Day is set for Friday, November 29. So, don’t let that Thanksgiving turkey settle too much—plan to head up the trail because the lifts will lurch to life at 9 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. During your first glorious weekend of slushing down the slopes, be sure to stop in for some eats and drinks at one of the four RLM dining options. The Main Lodge has room for 300 and is a great spot to set up your “camp” if you are with a larger group. The Midway Chalet is located mid-mountain atop the Willow Creek chairlift and offers burgers, sandwiches, beverages and snacks with a killer view of five mountain ranges. The newest dining option, Willow Creek Yurt, proved incredibly popular last year. Located at the bottom of Triple Chair, the Yurt offers quick burritos, salads, nachos and the like. And, don’t forget about the Bierstube—RML’s iconic gathering place. With 10 beers on tap, pub fare and a burger bar on the deck, the “Stube” is the place to be when you are not on the hill. After you take off your boots, be sure

Not sure about conditions? Call the Snow Phone at (406) 2556973 or get a live shot of both the base and downtown Red Lodge with the RLM web cam at www.redlodgemountain.com to wind-down and enjoy live music from 3 to 6 p.m. every Saturday throughout the season. Conquer the mountain You truly can conquer the mountain at RLM—day after day. That is, if you have the 2013-2014 Season Pass. Adult (ages 19-69) pay only $499; juniors (13-18) pay $319; children (age 6-12) pay $179; and seniors (age 70+) pay $159 if the pass is purchased by Oct. 10. If you break it down by each run, it is likely less money and more fun than a latte. Season ticket holders also receive a 10 percent discount on food, retail items, rentals and lessons; a discounted midweek Buddy Pass lift ticket; half-day lift rates at all Montana Ski Area Association ski resorts; five days of free skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort; and free skiing at Homewood Mountain Resort in California. See www.redlodgemountain. com for specific details and restrictions.

Yellowstone Alpine Klimb Second-annual bike trek attracts participants from across the country GAZETTE STAFF By Brittany Cremer bcremer@billingsgazette.com Freedom. Open air, the sound of sage hens rustling through nearby underbrush—and the freshest air you’ve ever tasted. Cyclists know this feeling. It’s kept Troy Charbonneau,Yellowstone Alpine Klimb’s executive director, coming back day in and day out for more than 15 years. “There’s a freedom attached to getting outside to cycle and escaping the mundane,” he said. “It gives you time to think, enjoy your surroundings, and Red Lodge has some of the best scenery around.” As part of the Montana Cycling & Ski Race Series, the Yellowstone Alpine Klimb will be held in Red Lodge September 7 and offers prizes to the top five finishers. The race has attracted participants from all across the country who want to come to Montana to

enjoy the splendor of our natural surroundings and challenging trail altitude. Charbonneau expects participants from Idaho, Minnesota, Wyoming, Montana and California, to name a few. This race is an ultra-century event that features 141 miles of epic road riding from Red Lodge through the Beartooth Pass, the Top of the World, into Wyoming, through Sunlight Basin, Chief Joseph Pass, on to Bear Creek and back to Red Lodge—all in one day. “The course is as beautiful and as challenging as any place in the world,” Charbonneau said. Montana Cycling & Ski Race Series presenters will provide world class support as you ride through the course—pick-ups and race pit stops will be provided. “The quickest time last year was right at eight hours,” Charbonneau said, “but participants finished anywhere between then and 12 hours.” New this year is the option to

ride the course with a teammate and conquer the route relay-style. Two-person teams are separated into “climbers” and “descenders,” Charbonneau said. The climbers will start the race, peddle to the Top of the World Store, then swap with the descenders to the base of Chief Joseph Pass, at which point they will alternate. This swap happens twice more throughout the course. “It’s a great way to break up the ride,” Charbonneau said. Entry fees for the race are based on a sliding scale: $160 for individuals and $300 for a team of two. Riders will be provided with a gear bag at packet pick up. A gear bag is not mandatory, but it may be very useful during your ride. For additional information or to register for the race, log on to montanacyclingraceseries.com/races/ yellowstone-alpine-klimb.You may also call race organizers directly at (406) 646-6043.
