Courtesy of Red Lodge Chamber If a man named J.C.F. “Doc” Siegfriedt had listened to what anybody was telling him in the 1920s –anybody at all—the Beartooth Highway, that unforgettable 68-mile stretch of winding, cliff-hugging, cloud-skimming road from Red Lodge, Mont. to the entrance of Yellowstone National Park, simply would not exist. But by all accounts, Doc was a force of nature, and from the time he arrived in Montana, he had his heart set on building a road that would connect the Red Lodge area with the wonderland of Yellowstone. On June 14, 1936, after 17 years of planning and hard work, Doc led a honking caravan of cars from Red Lodge up the Beartooth Highway to formally declare the road
open for travel. This summer, the public is invited to once again enjoy the splendor of the scenic route. The Beartooth Scenic Byway Yellowstone’s Highway to the Sky Dubbed “the most beautiful roadway in America” by On the Road correspondent Charles Kuralt, the Beartooth Highway climbs to an astounding 10,947 feet above sea level. Since its completion in 1936, the Highway has awed millions of visitors with its astonishing views of one of the most rugged and wild areas in the lower 48 states. The Montana Department of Transportation anticipates opening the Beartooth Highway to Vista Point on Friday, May 24, but the entire route will not be open until
June 14. It’s a day trip that’s well worth the wait. As it winds its way between the northeastern entrance of Yellowstone National Park and Red Lodge, Mont., the highway traverses an impressive range of ecosystems– from lush lodge pole pine forests to alpine tundra. At the highway’s summit, travelers find themselves in a sky-high world of glacial cirques, clear alpine lakes and snow that lingers through the summer months. The extreme climate at this elevation deters the growth of trees and shrubs, and the plants that do grow here have adapted in remarkable ways. Some convert sunlight to please see page 2

heat, and many conserve water the way desert plants do. In late June and July, the fragile tundra blossoms in a lavish display of wildflowers—shooting stars, columbine and Indian paintbrush, to name a few. With 20 peaks more than 12,000 feet in elevation (including Granite Peak, Montana’s highest at 12,799 feet), the Beartooth Mountains lie within the 943,377-acre Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. Grizzly and black bears make their home here, as do elk, deer, moose, Bighorn sheep, Rocky Mountain goats, mountain lions and bobcats. With more than 950 alpine lakes and hundreds of miles of trails, these mountains offer ample opportunities for recreation–much of it accessible from the Beartooth Highway. Plan on at least two hours driving time to make the trip between Yellowstone and Red Lodge—more if you really want to experience the beauty of the Beartooths. Whether or not you plan to stop and explore a while on your way, be sure to pack your windbreaker and woolens for the trip: it can be a bit nippy at the summit of Yellowstone’s own Highway to the Sky. Annual fundraiser promises to be a jazzy good time Courtesy of Beartooth Billings Clinic The year’s Beartooth Ball is primed for a rip-roaring good time. In the theme of the Roaring Twenties, the event is scheduled June 22 from 5 to 11 p.m. at Rock Creek Resort. The Beartooth Ball, an annual fundraiser for Beartooth Billings Clinic Foundation, is the Foundation’s signature gala event. This event is an important annual milestone in helping the Red Lodge-based medical center support community health care all across Carbon County. “People in Red Lodge love a reason to go all-out and dress up,” said Maggie Karas, community relations coordinator for Beartooth Billings Clinic. “This year’s event will not disappoint.” Funds raised through the Ball help to support a range of needs at Beartooth Billings Clinic—care for the uninsured, technology updates, patient education, staff development, endowment funding and more. Each year, Ball guests experience an entertaining evening based on a special theme. Some attendees, although not required, go all out with lavish theme-fitting costumes. Past themes have included MASH, Woodstock, and Grease – The Movie. The ball traditionally kicks off with a VIP wine-tasting reception held prior to the main event. General admission to the main event, including heavy hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions and live music by Jawbone Railroad and Downtime, follows at 6:30 pm. So speak easy, but get your tickets quickly…because they’re going fast. For tickets ($50 or $100) or sponsorship information, please call 406-446-0611 or 406-446-0612. Log on to www.beartoothbillingsclinic.org for more information.

Carol was born in Nebraska and moved with her family to Montana when she was seven. Carol has called Montana her home ever since. She is a self-taught artist who found her voice and passion for painting after the birth of her son. Spending much of her life in Montana has allowed Carol to nurture a deep love of the West—its fascinating history, stunning landscapes and the people and animals that live here…all subjects that find their way into her artwork. Her work is a contemporary expression of her subject matter, both through her choices of vibrant color and texture. Over time, her use of color and techniques in layering color in more complex ways has evolved and her work is unmistakable.
