FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT SHOW 2020

The show must go on By CHARITY DEWING cdewing@billingsgazette.com The 27th annual Fall Home Improvement Show is Sept. 11-13 at Metra Park’s Expo Center with the newest developments in home improvement merchandise and technology. With as many as 400 exhibitions both inside and out, the Home Improvement Show is going strong amid COVID-19 restrictions and health concerns – the event owners and organizers Beau and Devon Hedin are not taking it lightly. “This year is unique. And when we hear unique, we hear opportunity,” said Beau. Team Hedin had to reinvent the show while maintaining what has been known and loved by loyal patrons. With Riverstone Health guiding them through the process, the Hedins have a thorough mitigation plan. The safety of both vendors and patrons is the most important concern for the show. Changes include increased aisleways to better follow CDC guidelines and encourage social distancing. Vendors were also asked to update their displays to provide room and maintain social distancing. The team has also implemented an HVAC system (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) to keep airflow circulating and as fresh as possible. “We have increased sanitation staffing and protocols by trained sanitation specialists using only EPA certified cleaners to over 200 bottles of available hand sanitizer at the event itself,” said Beau. The fall show will maintain all the charm, fun and modern home improvement tools, gadgets, indoor and outdoor applications it has always offered. “We like to say the show will encompass everything that has to do with the interior, exterior, buying or selling of the home. It is literally onestop shopping for your entire home,” said Beau. Another benefit to the show, and another important aspect to the Hedins, is supporting local businesses and by extension, supporting the economic well-being of the community. “We have also been proud to say that the show focuses and benefits primarily local companies. This year that is even more so. With most out of state

companies staying home the show will have a true Montana feel. Billings is the perfect balance of small town and big city. We have all the innovation of any metropolitan area but with the loyalty of small-town communities,” said Beau. Attendees can meet local professionals in the field as they test cuttingedge products. The Home Improvement Show allows companies to see the public’s reaction, firsthand, and assess interest and viability of a new product. As always, the popular As-SeenOn-TV displays for indoor, outdoor,

kitchen and bathroom will offer a little something for everyone. The show will also feature hands-on interactive displays, custom water features, a synthetic grass putting green, delicious food trucks onsite and free Pepsi products for all. With as much as $25,000 in prizes – and free to enter – the show promises to be all it ever has been and more. “We are committed to keeping our economy strong, but most importantly, our community safe,” said Beau. Parking and admission are free. For information go to billingshomeimprovementshow.com.

Tips to help you find a

GREAT LOCAL PLUMBER Green SHOOT MEDIA hen it comes to plumbing, there are a lot of working parts and planning that needs to go well for the project to be a success. A good plumber can save you a lot of stress and money, while an underqualified plumber can be a headache. So how do you find a quality local plumber to trust with your project needs? The answer is in how much homework you’re willing to do to make sure the job goes right. Here are three tips to finding a great local plumber:

W

Trust word of mouth

As with most home services contractors, word of mouth is the most trustworthy way to find a reputable plumber. Ask your neighbors, family and friends who they have used in the past. Make sure your project is comparable to the ones they have contracted out to make sure the plumber in question has direct experience with what you’re seeking. For example, a local handyman who specializes in fixing leaks may not be the best option for re-plumbing an entire bathroom as part of an extensive remodeling project.

Check online reviews and ratings Check out the review and rating sites like Angie’s List or Yelp. These organizations are focused on helping consumers make wise choices with the contractors they are using in their homes. Pay attention to ratings and read as many customer comments or posts as possible. If there are no red flags — such as customer stories ripping the plumber for leaving a job half done or overcharging for their services — then you can add that plumber to your list of contractors to call about getting a quote.

8

Be sure to get details from those who are referring plumbers to you. Here are some questions to ask:

ADOBE STOCK VIA GREEN SHOOT MEDIA

Did the plumber routinely show up on time? Did the plumber respect your home and clean up any messes? Was the plumber’s proposed cost close to what they ended up charging? Would you recommend the plumber for my specific project? Did they offer a free quote? Were they responsive with any issues that came up after their work was done? Were they licensed in our area? If you are confident in your friends’ and family members’ answers, then it’s time to dig a little deeper.

FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT SHOW 2020

Make a decision

Once you have a list of three to five reputable plumbing companies, it’s time to get the project started. Call each plumber and ask if they are available to give you a quote for your project. Some plumbers are now offering video consultations where you can show them digitally what problems you are experiencing, and they can come up with a quote over the internet for you. Other companies will send a technician out to check on your specific project. Make sure to ask if there is a charge for the estimate or if they offer free quotes. Once you have a plan put forward that meets your budget and timeline needs, sign the contract and let your plumber get to work.

ENHANCE YOUR YARD

WITH A WATER FEATURE Y

Green SHOOT MEDIA ou can put in a gorgeous, eyecatching water feature in just the span of a weekend. Consider these tips to turn your backyard into an oasis.

Look at your space

Decide what kind of feature that your space, your budget and your lifestyle can handle. Is it a giant koi pond or a simple fountain trickling over rocks? Generally, the larger your feature is, the more electric or plumbing work you may have to have done. You also need to consider what’s under the ground, and that includes tree roots and utilities.

Use underlayment

No matter which project you choose, you’ll likely need underlayment to protect your water feature. Look for it at your local home and garden center. Get enough so that it extends over and around your water feature.

Get physical

Also common to almost all water feature projects: holes. You’re likely going to have to dig and it’s probably going to be more than you think. Consider getting help if you’re not sure you might be up to the task.

Rock ‘n’ roll

Almost all features also have rocks, from gravel to help filter your water to boulders to set it off. Most home and garden centers sell a variety (though they can be surprisingly expensive) and you’ll also need help placing them when you get home. Look for finishes and textures that complement your surrounding landscape, any patio stone or masonry on your home, and that will wear well in the weather. Depending on the design of your feature, you may also have to drill through the stone. You may be able to rent the equipment from the home and garden store or a local tool rental.

Consider plantings

Set off your new water feature with plants, but not those so big they might disrupt your pond or fountain with roots or branches. Also make sure you choose perennials at this time of year and tend to them carefully over the winter until they are well established.

Fountain care

If you live in a colder climate, take your water pump inside for the winter and store it in a pail of water to keep the seals wet. Otherwise, your feature should weather freezes nicely and be ready for you in the spring.

FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT SHOW 2020

Green SHOOT MEDIA aking on DIY home improvement projects can be a rewarding experience. It can also help save you big bucks compared to hiring a contractor for every single project around your home. But as you tackle that electrical update or new tiled shower, understand that dealing with home improvement projects requires safety and precautions. Check out the following findings regarding the most common homeowner injuries from Porch.com, a home services company connecting homeowners with high-quality home improvement professionals:  Ladder accidents result in nearly 200,000 emergency room visits every year. Ladders also kill about 300 people annually.  All in all, using a ladder means a 1 in 1,680 chance of an ER visit, according to the report.  Hardware like nails and screws cause 124,000 ER visits annually and a 1 in 2,615 chance at injury.  Lawn mowers cause nearly 90,000 trips to the ER.  Homeowners’ fingers, arms,

eyes, face, feet and the upper torso are most at risk.  About 70 percent of all home repair-related ER visits happen to males, with men 50 to 59 most at risk.  Home repair injuries occur most often on Saturdays and Mondays and in the summer months of June, July and September.

Research is key

When it comes to preventing injuries on your home improvement projects, making sure you’re prepared is key. Each project requires unique skills and knowledge, so experts recommend spending some time doing a little research before you start. You can find helpful videos online or even pick the brain of some of your handier friends before getting started. Visit your local hardware store to chat with associates about your project. The more time you put into researching your project, the less risk you put yourself at during the actual execution of the job.

Safety gear

Depending on the tasks involved, it’s likely you’ll need some safety gear to protect yourself from flying objects,

dust or debris. Even for homeowners experienced in working on their own projects, safety gear is key to preventing injuries. Here are a few pieces of gear no DIYer should be without: protective gloves with reinforced palms, safety glasses, ear protection, a hard hat, a dust mask, non-slip and closed-toe shoes, flame-resistant coveralls, and a harness and safety rope. Also, make sure your home is equipped with a full first aid kit as well as fire extinguishers or blankets. Have a list of emergency numbers ready just in case things do get out of hand. This list should include professional tradespeople, your local fire department and the poison help line.

Know when to call for help

Even the handiest of DIYers need help from time to time. Plumbing and especially electrical are two areas where it’s advised to depend on an expert. Even on relatively smaller projects, the help of a licensed local expert can make all the difference. You may be out some cash in the long run, but you’ll have confidence that the job will be completed according to current health and safety codes.

ADD A FRESH COAT OF PAINT

Green SHOOT MEDIA The cooler weather of fall can be a great time to update the exterior of your home with a fresh coat of paint. Here are some tips from HGTV on how to get your home looking great in no time.

Step 1: Clean it up

You can’t put paint over dirt. Get the best coverage by removing dirt and debris from your house using a pressure washer. Work from the top to bottom, overlapping each stroke.

Step 2: Repair

While you’re washing, make note of any damage to wood, brick, stucco or siding. Use epoxy filler to cover cracks or holes. Once the filler is dry, lightly sand it using mediumgrit sandpaper.

Step 3: Remove loose paint Scrape or sand loose paint off

the surfaces around your home before painting.

Fill any gaps between the house and trim around your doors and windows using caulk made for exterior finishes. Caulk wherever different materials meet.

look). Work your way from top to bottom, moving smoothly and overlapping your strokes, just like you did when you power washed. If your color is very different from what’s already on the house, you may need a coat of primer, too. Talk to the professionals at your local paint store for advice.

Step 5: Cover stains

Step 8: Paint the trim

Step 4: Caulk the trim

Put a coat of stain-blocking primer over any stains to help your paint cover it.

Step 6: Protect

Keep those doors, windows and lights clean. Cover anything you don’t want painted with plastic sheeting and tape.

Step 7: Paint!

Here’s the fun part. Load a paint sprayer with your chosen exterior paint (pick a flat or eggshell finish for the best

Remove the plastic sheeting and get to your windows and doors using an exterior semigloss paint and a paintbrush. Use drop cloths to make clean up easier.

Step 9: Touch up

After you get everything cleaned up, walk around your house and touch up any surfaces that may have gotten missed or scratched during the process. Then, sit back and enjoy your fresh curb appeal.
