Broncs look to play fast and furious in 2013 By MIKE ZIMMER mzimmer@billingsgazette.com Chris Murdock feels good about the progress of his Billings Senior team since the end of last season. And he’s not alone. “Chris and those young guys over there are doing a great job,” said longtime Billings Skyview coach Ron Lebsock. “They’ve got so much energy and you can really see it in the kids. They really turned some heads at our AA camp this summer.” Murdock is optimistic that the Broncs will turn more heads in his second year as the head coach. Senior finished 3-7 a year ago in a season that was hampered by a late-season injury to star running back Nolan Saraceni. Saraceni has taken his talents to Montana Tech, and the focal point of the Broncs’ offense this season will shift from running back to quarterback, where senior Joe Zimmer will take over fulltime after splitting time a year ago with Luke Paine. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Zimmer played mostly receiver last season, but he provided an instant spark whenever he lined up at quarterback. He completed 20 of 30 passes for 546 yards — a 27.3yard average per completion — and four touchdowns in addition to his 177 yards and two touchdowns receiving. “Joe is a great player and a great leader, plain and simple,” said Murdock. “He managed to come in and work hard with us a lot this summer even though he was busy with baseball (as the second baseman and leadoff hitter for the Billings Royals). “Joe is an excellent passer and he has the ability to take off and run when he needs to. He knows our offense from multiple positions and he knows what every guy is supposed to do on every play. I’m excited about what Joe will do for us and how he will lead us.”

Senior’s Joe Zimmer rushes past Jackson King of Sentinel during a game last year at Wendy’s Field at Daylis Stadium.
Wade Cicierski, a 5-10, 220-pound senior, and junior Kaelen Shay will be the primary running backs. Cicierski rushed for 237 yards and one touchdown last year as the backup to Saraceni. Levi Beck is a returning starter at wide receiver and fellow senior Scottie Crigler is a returning starter at tight end. Other receivers will include seniors Cody Connolly and Damien White and junior Eli Tostengard, who is also a backup quarterback. Junior Connor Gaughan will also see time at tight end.
The offensive line, which features no returning starters, will include seniors Denzel Maua, Kael Giebink, Emmitt Putman and Miguel Marquez. Juniors Tobin O’Brien, Kenny Blankenship and Jake Clark, a Helena Capital transfer, will also be in the rotation. Senior Nick Preston will be the Broncs’ kicker and Zimmer will be the punter. “I like our potential on offense,” said Murdock. “We’re all new on the offensive line, but those guys put in a lot of hard work over the summer and made up a lot of ground.
“We’ve got good speed at receiver and tight end, and Wade (Cicierski) has looked really good running the ball in the preseason.” The defensive line will feature Cicierski and Crigler along with seniors Tyller Cortez and Daniel Richardson and sophomore Sean Jones. Junior Ryan Dick is a returning starter at linebacker, where he’ll be joined by Clarke and sophomore Devin Maua. Junior Nolan Timmons is a returning starter at safety and he’ll lead a secondary that will also include seniors Austin Schiesser,

Devin Reed and Makai Birkeland and juniors Tostengard and Beau Thomas. That same enthusiasm that impressed Skyview’s Lebsock over the summer has also caught Murdock’s eye. “We’ve got a group of seniors who are real passionate about football, and a lot of juniors are right there with them. They work hard and they care about getting better. “Based on the time these kids invested in the summer, I know they’re going to work hard all season and compete in every game.”
Experience up front makes Falcons a threat By MIKE ZIMMER mzimmer@billingsgazette.com For the past 28 seasons, it’s been all about the offensive line and the ground game for coach Ron Lebsock’s Billings Skyview teams. Make it 29. A veteran offensive line and a pair of returning starters at running back have the Falcons thinking about a deeper run in the Class AA playoffs in Lebsock’s 29th season at the helm. Skyview finished 6-5 last season, falling 40-21 to eventual state champion Butte in the first round of the Class AA playoffs. The Falcons finished hot, winning four straight to make the playoffs after a 2-4 start. “These kids are working hard to get ready for the season,” said Lebsock. “The playoffs are a long ways away right now, but I know it’s on their minds. Hopefully we’ll improve every week and have a chance to be there again at the end.” The Falcons’ Wing-T offense will be powered by an offensive line that features three senior returning starters — tackles Thomas Bear Robe and Jalen Whitley and guard Trevor Hopf. Joining Hopf in the guard rotation will be seniors Reece Quade and Jacob Bone and juniors Spenser Knutson, Trent Groscop and Justin Doty. Others in the tackle rotation will be juniors Hunter Berg, Chase Huet, Chance Housely, Levi Ewen and Kallem Maurer. Juniors Kyle Reitler and Jared Niver will play center. They’ll look to clear running room for returning starters Drake Schafer at running back and Alex Picicci at fullback. Schafer was one of the leading rushers in Class AA last season with 1,207 yards and 15 touchdowns, while Picicci added 792 and 8 TDs. Senior Nathan Borer and juniors Riley Barta, Rashawn Kroll and Aaron Mangus will back up Schafer at running back, while juniors Justin Keeling and Chandler

Hanson will back up Picicci at fullback. “We’ve got a good, healthy pack of runners, with Drake and Alex leading the way,” said Lebsock. “They have experience in our of-
fense and they know what to do with the ball.” Senior Gus Schaff will take over at quarterback, replacing twoyear starter Konner Wiechman, who opted not to play this season
so that he can focus on baseball. Lebsock said the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Schaff was contending with Wiechman for the starting job when both were sophomores before Schaff went down
with a knee injury. “Gus is a tough kid … he’s worked hard to come back from some injuries to get ready for his senior year,” said Lebsock. “He’s looked good running the offense in camp. He throws the ball well and he has the ability to pull it down and run when the opportunity is there.” Tre’von Strong is a returning starter at wide receiver, where he’ll be joined by fellow seniors Kyle Broadbent, Clayton Schmaltz and Beaux LaFontaine and juniors Taylor Trollope, Evan Atkinson and Kendal Manuel. Senior Austin Howie will start at tight end and be backed up by seniors Jared Lambrecht and Tristan Stiffarm and juniors Zane Guse and David Refsland. Quade returns as the starting kicker after making 20 of 26 PATs last season. Quade and Gabe Davis will do the punting. Many of the same names will also line up on defense. Hopf, Whitley and Bear Robe are returning starters on the D-line, where they’ll be joined by Keeling, Howie, Lambrecht, Doty, Guse, Berg and Reitler. At linebacker, Quade is a thirdyear starter and will be joined by Borer, Cody Strong, Darin Keierleber and Kyhler Thomson. Broadbent and Schmaltz are returning veterans in the secondary, which will also include junior Kam Kemmis along with Tre’von Strong, Kroll, Barta, Trollope and Mangus. “We’ve got good size and experience on the D-line, so that’s our strength,” said Falcons’ defensive coordinator Rich St. John. “We’ve got some holes to fill at linebacker, but Reece Quade is a good place to start there. He’s a two-year starter who really understands the system and knows the game. “We’ve got a chance to be a good defense if we develop some depth. We’ve got a lot of kids who are going to see playing time, I know that.” Friday, August 30, 2013

Golden Bear seniors eager for their chance By MIKE ZIMMER mzimmer@billingsgazette.com “More turns.” That’s what Billings West coach Paul Klaboe says his team needs, and he’s confident that good things will happen once the Golden Bears get those turns. West returns just four of 22 starters from last year’s team, which finished 7-4 after a heartbreaking 28-21 loss to Great Falls CMR in the first round of the Class AA football playoffs — a game that ended with an incomplete pass on fourth-and-goal in the final seconds. “That’s not a lot of returning starters,” said Klaboe, who’s beginning his 28th season as the coach of the Golden Bears. “It’s not like we’re a brand-new team, but it’s pretty close. “We have 23 seniors, but most of them just haven’t played at the varsity level. We’ve got good football players … they just need to get more turns in varsity games. Once they do, we’ve got a chance to be a real solid team.” One of the returning starters, running back Logan Laird, figures to be the focal point of the West offense early in the season. The senior speedster rushed for 262 yards in just four games last year after missing the first seven games due to injury. Laird averaged 4.5 yards per carry and also caught 11 passes for 112 yards. “Logan is a proven varsity player. He was out there getting significant carries for us as a sophomore,” said Klaboe, who owns a record of 206-86 at West. “Running back will be a strength for us. We know what Logan can do, and we feel good about our other kids that will be in the rotation.” James Oblander, Brady Baxter, Cody McCombs and Zach Wolff will also see time at running back. Senior Wilson Brott and junior Casey Klaboe, who both stand 6-foot-5, are vying to replace Ryan Gallogly as the starting quarter-

back. Gallogly threw for 1,926 yards and 13 touchdowns and rushed for another 345 yards and 11 TDs last year. Klaboe has liked what he’s seen from both of his quarterbacks through the summer and preseason practices. “They’ve both improved a lot since last season and they’ve both shown that they’re capable of moving the offense,” he said. “With the offense we run, our success is determined by how good the quarterback is … right now we’re waiting for one of those two guys to emerge and win the job.”
Jeremy “Bubba” Keller will anchor the West receiving corps after being moved there from quarterback. Klaboe said the 6-foot, 175-pound senior took charge at his new position over the summer and quickly became a team leader. Keller will be joined in the wide receiver rotation by Brandyn Van Zee, Tom Donahue, Parker Bernhardt, Brock Bolin and Jackson Cobb. Jayson Leinwand and Mitch Brott will split time at tight end. Returning starters Michael Quesenberry (guard) and Garrett Schuck (tackle) will anchor the West offensive line. Tyler Boehm
and Jamison Lee will also see time at tackle, and Donovan Turley and Austin Stevens will be in the guard rotation. Senior Logan Breshears and junior Justin Rock Above will both see time at center. Grant Linde returns at kicker for West. He was 31 of 35 on PATs and 5 of 7 on field goals last year. Bjorn Bornes will handle the punting duties. On the defensive line, Quesenberry has been a starter at tackle for two years and David Stubbs is a returning starter at end. They’ll be joined on the D-line by Turley,
Schuck, Wolff, Spencer Johnson, Joey Ferrucci and Jarrod Altrogge. The linebacker corps of Leinwand, Baxter, Altrogge, Elijah Sommerville and Richmond Paschall features no returning starters. Donahue is the lone returning starter in the secondary, where he’ll be joined by Bernhardt, Cobb, Sean Kautz and Cody Costello. “We’ve got good athletes on the defense. They just haven’t played much,” said Klaboe. “Michael (Quesenberry) is the key for us up front. He’s big and powerful and he’s got a lot of experience, so he’s going to be tough to handle. “We’ve got good kids on both sides of the ball. They’ve worked hard all summer and in our practices … now it’s just a matter of how they respond when their turn comes up in the game.”
Rebuilding Rams look to create own identity By MIKE ZIMMER mzimmer@billingsgazette.com Jim Stanton knows that Billings Central might never have another football season like 2012. So while the Rams’ coach is hopeful that this year’s squad will find success, his expectations are realistic. “Last year’s team was special, but that was last year’s team,” said Stanton of his dominant 2012 squad that went a perfect 12-0, won the Class A state championship and outscored its opponents by a margin of 563-65. “We’ve got a good group this year that had to wait their turn with all the seniors we had last year. “These kids got a taste of it last year, even if it was from the sideline. Now they want to go out and make their own identity as a team.” The Rams have three returning starters on offense and just one on defense. The focal point of the offense will be junior wide receiver/running back Holden Ryan. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound speedster will be joined in the running back rotation by Michale Hartman, Bain Campbell and Jonah Studer. They’ll line up in the Rams’ shotgun Wing-T offense behind junior quarterbacks Bryce Hawbaker and Sean Ward. Joining Ryan in the wide receiver rotation will be Kyle Gunderson, Jesse Byorth, Colin Holetz and Shelby Zorn. Ben D’Alton and Perry Smith are returning starters on the offensive line. They’ll be joined by Andrew Hoffman, Zach Cullen, Dayton Cogdill, Alex Fitzgerald and Weston Marsh. “We’re still a work in progress on offense, but there’s a lot of talent there,” said Stanton. “Ben and Perry are returning starters on the line, so that is a strength. “Holden will be a tough matchup for a lot of teams. We’ll get the ball to him in a variety of ways, and we’ll spread the ball around and

try to develop that depth at running back that we’ve had in the past.” Junior Benton Greshke will take over the kicking and punting duties from three-year starter Luke Daly, who now kicks for Montana State. Cogdill is the Rams’ lone returning starter on defense, though his season was cut short last year by an arm injury. He’ll be joined in the linebacker rotation by Holetz,
Cullen and Ryan. The defensive line will feature Ward, Marsh, D’Alton, Smith and Zorn. Gunderson, Studer, Hartman, Byorth, Hawbaker and Campbell will fill the secondary positions. “Those kids (on defense) will all play on offense, so we need to establish some depth early so we can keep fresh kids on the field,” said Stanton. “We’re not going to be big up front, but I think our speed
on defense will cause problems for some teams.” Stanton knows his players are aware that Central has won 30 consecutive regular-season Eastern A games and played in a remarkable six straight Class A championship games. “I know these kids have high expectations for themselves,” said Stanton, who has guided the Rams to a pair of state titles (2007 and 2012) in addition to the Class B
championship he won at Huntley Project in 1999. “Every new group that comes through here has high expectations. They want to compete and continue the success of the group before them. “This group will work hard, I know that. They put in a lot of time in the summer and they’re working hard in practice.” The Rams open the season at Belgrade on Sept. 7, then host Butte Central on Saturday, Sept. 14. Friday, August 30, 2013

We have a very small senior class this year and even though there are some terrific players in this senior class, there are not very many of them so we will play a lot of juniors on both sides of the ball. We also have a very, very tough early schedule and with our youth and inexperience, we’ll see how we get out of the gate. I do like our overall team speed and athleticism, though, and if our juniors can step up, much like our last senior class did as juniors when many of them played and helped us get to the semifinals and a 9-3 season in 2011, we’ll be OK.”

Noteworthy: Stenseth was named all-state last season, while Blyth and Derheim were both picked as All-Central A players. The Rangers rushed for 3,396 yards last year, an average of nearly 340 yards per game. Coach Beitel says: “We have some good momentum as a program after winning the Central A and being a state semifinalist. We lost some talented seniors but the young guys we have now are motivated to have another good season.”

Noteworthy: Richtmyer was named all-conference at both tight end and linebacker last season, while Violette was an all-state pick at cornerback. Coach Oliver says: “Our junior and senior class received a ton of playing time last year and experienced the natural growing pains of competing at the varsity level. Senior should have plenty of talent to contend again By MIKE SCHERTING mscherting@billingsgazette.com Billings Senior finished 32-0 last season, winning its first State AA volleyball championship since 2008. While the Broncs graduated four key cogs, coach Jeff Carroll thinks this year’s team can do something better than last year’s championship team: Practice. “I think the biggest thing is I want them to come to practice every day ready to be better,” said Carroll, who has won 10 state titles at Senior. “We were so talented last year that sometimes practices were nowhere near what they could have or should have been. They were more in maintenance mode than improvement mode. “So with this particular team there is so much out there that we can and need to get better at, that we’ve got to understand right now that we’ve only got so many opportunities to come to practice and get better.” That said, the Broncs again have a lot of talent. Four starters return: Seniors Jace Henderson, Andrea Bowers and Bobbi Bjordahl; and junior Taylor Mims. Five other players from last year’s varsity roster are back as well, including seniors Catherine Sloan (5-5, defensive specialist), Cierra Powell (5-10, outside hitter), junior Emily Orvis (5-2, defensive specialist), and sophomores Brianna Bromgard (5-5, setter) and Aubrie Steiner (6-1, middle). Newcomers include defensive specialists Briley Rowe (5-2, sophomore) and Lizzy King (5-6, junior) and outside hitter Naomi Bad Bear (5-9, sophomore outside hitter). Henderson, the team’s

ever, they understand your system, they understand me and what I want in different situations … they’re not just studs, but they’re also winners and they’re stabilizers. They’re just a perfect combination of all three of those characteristics.” Mims, a junior who has already given a verbal to Washington State, showed her potential in last year’s championship win over Kalispell Flathead. The 6-3 middle had a near-perfect match in getting 12 kills on a .780 hitting percentage to go along with six blocks. Last year she was fourth in attack efficiency, fifth in blocks and 12th in kills per set. “At the end of the day, Taylor Mims is potentially one of the most dominant front-row players to ever play the game in the state of Montana,” Carroll said.
“Not a question.” One question that will trail the Broncs this season is how will the back row play? Senior relied heavily on some of its graduated seniors for a lot of its passing and defensive play, so players like Sloan, Orvis, King and Rowe will have to step in to that void. Carroll said it’s encouraging to him to think of the offensive potential his team can put on the floor. “We’ve got four kids who give definitely can make an impact for us offensively,” Carroll said. “Gosh, most of the time if you’ve got two pretty good hitters at the high school level, you’ve got a smile on your face. With three, you’ve really got a smile on your face. But when you have four or more who can put the ball away, then obviously you’re just going to be difficult to beat.”

Solid team should mean solid season for Falcons By MIKE SCHERTING mscherting@billingsgazette.com Savvy is a word that implies experience, and for a coach, it is a word of luxury. Skyview’s Vicki Carle gets to use the word often in describing the latest incarnation of the Falcons. In actuality, this year’s team will be a whole lot like last year’s, only with a lot more of that valuable experience. Just two seniors graduated from the squad that went 19-9 and won a playoff match before bowing out after two matches at the state tournament. “We kind of have a veteran team this year, which is nice,” said Carle, who has chalked up 363 wins at Skyview in 22 seasons. “Just losing two seniors, we don’t have a whole lot of spots to fill. We’ve got some athleticism, some size, and some speed and quickness. A lot of pieces of the puzzle.” The Mason twins – seniors Breeanna, a 5-foot-9 setter, and 5-9 outside hitter Aubree – along with middle blocker Hailey Copinga, are among the big pieces of Skyview’s puzzle. All three received postseason accolades last season: Aubree Mason was second-team all-state, Breeanna Mason was honorable mention all-state and Copinga was honorablemention all-Eastern AA. All three also showed versatility in playing all rotations. In particular, Aubree Mason led Class AA with a 2.21 serve-receive accuracy and ranked 12th in with 3.41 digs per set, a big number for a hitter, and Breeanna Mason showed her aggressiveness as a setter with a .399 attack efficiency and averaged 1.3 kills per set. “Breeanna’s just one of those savvy kids that can

just find a way to score, whether she does it herself or sets someone else up for the kill,” Carle said. “Aubree’s just a complete player. She can just really do a lot of good things for your team.” Copinga, a 5-9 junior, has made her mark at Skyview in all seasons, adding basketball and track and field to her resume. She ranked ninth last season in blocks, averaging 0.98 per set, and though Copinga is listed as a middle blocker on the roster, Carle said Copinga won’t be limited to that role. “There’s nothing she can’t do,” Carle said. “She’s just a year stronger and a year smarter and a very good leader. She’s got the whole package.”
Bekah Ellis, a 5-8 senior outside hitter, brings her competitiveness and enthusiasm back to the starting lineup. Also returning is 5-8 junior Taylor Burris, who will be anchoring the back row once again. “There’s just kind of some grittiness with our kids in the back row, and you need to include Bekah and Hailey in that mix,” Carle said. “The ball just doesn’t hit the floor without a couple bodies going after it. We just have some really hustle type of kids in the back row.” Defensive specialist Deja Fuson (5-4, senior), outside hitter Shea Wacaser (5-9, senior) and middle blocker Mallory Arbizzani (6-3, senior) will be among players
who will see increased time this season. The Falcons have to be encouraged about the makeup of the team this season, but Carle has never been one to look ahead. She’s still approaching this season with cautious optimism. “I think we’re real excited about the possibilities here,” she said. “But we just have to win the day … get better today. When you have as many returning kids back you kind of get excited about what’s ahead, but we’ve got a long ways to go. We just need to win every day, and when you do those sorts of things, then the things down the road become a lot clearer.”

It will be important for Wing to help develop the hitters for a team needing to find out where from where the offense will come. “She’s got a new motivation this year, and I’m hoping that will carry over into a leadership-type quality,” Deming said. “For her, she knows she’s got a lot on her shoulders. It’s up to her to start everything for us. She’s shouldering a lot, but that’s what our setters are supposed to do.” Meyer will provide some fire, Deming said, which will be important for a team learning on the fly.
“She is a very driven young lady,” Deming said. “She doesn’t like losing, so she is pumped, ready to go and ready to be a force in the back row for us.” Lehenbauer was used in a split role last year, serving as the second setter in an attempt at running a 6-2 offense. Deming said that idea has been scrapped, so Lehenbauer can concentrate on her hitting. “She was more successful hitting and we want to bring that strength out,” Deming said. She’s a great server, too, so we want to try and capitalize on that.” Joining the varsity from the JV ranks are juniors Meg

Also earning a varsity spot were seniors Taylor Ostwald (5-6, outside hitter/defensive specialist) and Mychal Zarzoza (5-9, middle/right-side hitter) and junior Jessi Zuroff, a 5-10 middle hitter who is
making the jump from the sophomore team. “What is it going to take for us to be successful? Well, it’s going to take a lot of little things done right,” Deming said. “So, we’re working on a lot of little things, and hopefully those little things that are a little rusty, a little awkward at the beginning of the year, we’ll be doing them a lot better at the end.” That’s the big picture.

State tourney experience could give Central the edge By JOE KUSEK jkusek@billingsgazette.com Don’t ask the coaches. They refuse to discuss it. The senior leaders, only when pushed a little, might allow some quiet discussion. The Billings Central volleyball program lets the results do all of its talking. The Rams have earned a trophy at the Class A state volleyball tournament in Bozeman four straight seasons, starting with the 2009 state championship. Central has since finished third, second and third. Playing on Saturday remains the expectation. And it should when a team has dominated the Eastern A, winning four consecutive regular-season titles and five of the last seven. The Rams are 38-2 over the last four years in league play. “If they work hard and play together,’’ said eighthyear head coach Liz Hanser of her team playing for hardware in 2013. Central has been to the state tournament seven of the eight years during her tenure. The Rams return five
starters from last year’s team that finished 31-8. All five are seniors. “They have that on-court experience,’’ Hanser said. “They know each other so well. And they’re good friends off the court.” Heading up the list of returnees is four-year starter and all-state selection Justyn Juhl. The 5-11 senior, one of the premier players in Class A, averaged almost four kills and five digs a set last season. “She’s a team player,’’ Hanser said of Juhl. “She works hard for herself and works hard for the team.” Directing the offense is senior and second-team Eastern A selection Baylee Hadley. Hadley, will be entering her second season as the Rams’ quarterback. She averaged 9.8 assists a set. “Baylee’s really taken control this year,’’ said her coach. “She knows her hitters.” The other senior starters back are middle hitter Jenny Garber, outside hitter Erika Kuehn and right side hitter Casey Tehle. Garber, who averaged 1.9 kills and a halfblock a set, earned honorable
mention Eastern A honors last year along with the hardhitting Kuehn, who averaged 2.25 kills and 4.15 digs a set. The sharp-serving Tehle had a team-high 70 aces. “It’s fast and it floats,’’
Hanser said of Tehle’s difficult serves. Junior Mirrada Clarin will step into the starting libero spot this fall. She averaged 2.4 digs a set in 2012. Junior Carlee Schaff and
sophomore Hope Welhaven are defensive specialists on the varsity, while sophomore Ellie Hanser will see plenty of playing time at middle hitter. “They key for us, is com-
