COre dental Care inherits longtime West end practice TARA CADY tcady@billingsgazette.com

Dr. Chalsey Nelsen took over Dr. Ericksen’s dental practice at 2700 Grand Ave. Ste. C and renamed it CORE Dental Care.

Dr. Chalsey Nelsen is filling more than cavities at her new CORE Dental Care practice at 2700 Grand Ave. Ste. C; she’s filling the needs of Dr. Erickson’s patients. Nelsen took over Erickson’s practice Aug. 1, 2017 after the longtime dentist retired and sold the practice he’d had at the Grand Avenue Dental Centre since 1994. With a new business name and new doctor, Nelsen wanted patients to feel like they were coming into a new office, too. Interior designer Alex Faught with Collaborative Design Architects re-envisioned the outdated lobby area, replacing chairs, wallpaper and furniture to reflect a more modern feel.

Family is at the core of Dr. Chalsey Nelsen’s life. So when deciding on a new name for her practice, an acronym a friend suggested made perfect sense. CORE stands for Chalsey, Nelsen’s kids Oscar and Ruby, and husband Eric. Nelsen’s focus on family translates to one major change patients can expect from the practice; CORE provides children’s dental care. The West End business began taking patients right away with no lag in operations between ownership. A busy workload didn’t stop Nelsen’s dreams to remodel; she found a contractor who would work around business hours to transform the outdated office. Contractors like Collaborative Design Architects, Wilson Cabinetry and Carpet One came in Thursday nights and left minimal trace that there was an ongoing construction zone by Monday. They housed tools and materials in the employee bathroom throughout the project. “I don’t think we would’ve done it any other way,” Nelsen said. “It worked out really nice.” And many people involved, like Bud and Mark Miller with Arch 406, became like family. “He really took good care of us,” Nelsen said of Bud. “Same with Mark.”

Moving toward Modern

The newly-remodeled lobby area includes a small table with chairs for kids to play at while they wait to be seen. But the updates don’t stop there; all of the chairs have been replaced. “I think I was looking for something to freshen up, brighten up the office to be more modern,” Nelsen said. “I wanted the look of the office to reflect that we’re keeping up with the industry.” While she hopes the wait isn’t long, Nelsen wanted to give patients a little education before their appointment. The lobby’s television connects to the internet to show information on procedures like dentures, implants, whitening and Invisalign. Other noticeable and notable changes were the flooring, paint and countertops. Carpets went from a muted beige/green to a slightly sparkly gray. In the operatories, Nelsen added hard floors “for optimum disinfection.” And countertops were replaced to have no creases or grooves so that the design was “up to the standards” of the industry. Walls were painted white and light bulbs were replaced to emit one shade as opposed to multiple.

Alex Faught with CDA designed it all. “The office before was pretty dated, ‘80s, early ‘90s,” Faught said. “But (Nelsen) loved the space. She was really into clean lines and a contemporary, modern feel.” Faught removed wallpaper and the beige and pink color scheme. But some elements, like the wood reception desk and teal cabinetry with brushed brass hardware, fit with the intended look. “With a modern space, you want to bring in some color,” she said. “The wood really works with the color palette that we had, same with the wood beams.” Nelsen was Faught’s first client to try a new carpet by Patcraft called alloy shimmer. The flooring’s metallic

backing kept the space fun, yet sophisticated. Having an inviting environment is important in the dental industry. “They can be really sterile, and really uncomfortable,” Faught said of stereotypical dentist offices. “This is a little more hip, a younger vibe.” With the idea that “too much too soon could kind of scare people off,” Faught says the small-scale remodel was enough to make a difference without making existing clients not feel welcome. Construction coincided with CORE Dental Care’s opening, the week of Aug. 1, 2017, and completed around Thanksgiving. “I really loved how (the project) turned out,” Faught said. “(Nelsen) was just a joy to work with.”

Countertops changed, but the teal cabinet faces and brushed brass hardware remain for a much-needed pop-of-color.

Floors were updated in the operatories for “optimum disinfection.” Carpeting was changed to a gray, with hints of metallic shimmer.

Chung Brothers Automotive: Driven to serviCe vehiCles in the heights TARA CADY tcady@billingsgazette.com

Chung Brothers Automotive opened Jan. 29 at 2100 Main St. in the Heights.

Having just opened Jan. 29, Chung Brothers Automotive is already setting high expectations. The auto repair business located at 2100 Main St. may be the first of many locations in the area, as owner Quang Chung and his brothers Hoi and John Chung vie for enough success to open another shop in the future. The lobby area will include a kids’ play station and black leather furniture.

It’s not easy living states away from your siblings, so when Billings resident Quang Chung convinced his mechanic brothers in Louisiana and South Dakota to relocate to Montana and operate an auto repair shop, it brought the family back together. While Chung didn’t have the ASE certification his brother Hoi had, Chung had business acumen. He owns Sensation Nails and Spa on the West End and holds a degree in business. “We decided to come together as one,” Chung explained of the brothers’ complementary skills. In 2016, Chung and his brothers began looking for an area with the most traffic. Main Street in the Heights made sense, so they settled on the 2100 Main St. location and chose KE Construction to help them realize their dream.

BUILT TO LAST

Erin and Bryce Kirschenmann, a

husband and wife contractor team and owners of KE Construction, transformed the abandoned property into a vast auto mechanic shop with eight bays and lots of overhead storage space. Erin said the property used to have a gas station, but has been vacant since 1985. Now, a 6,050-square-foot preengineering shell building with stainless steel fasteners and bolts affixed to a six-inch concrete slab sits in its place. The Kirschenmanns say the concrete is thicker than usual to prevent cracking. And the R-17 garage doors have the highest insulation possible. With Montana’s brutal winters, accommodating for the weather was a must. “The gutters are piped into the end of the boulder pit instead of dumping ice onto the asphalt,” Bryce said. Erin focused on the interior design aspect of the construction. The blue bays

were based off of the company’s logo and metal was incorporated indoors to match the building’s exterior. Existing furniture in the lobby area is temporary. Black leather will replace the brown and green to match the room’s monochrome scheme. And kids will have a play area, plus popcorn machine. Staff have their own break room, ADA-compliant bathroom with shower and hookups for a washer and dryer. An upstairs storage mezzanine overlooks shop activities. With only 80 percent of the property designated for use, additional parking or outside storage is available on the one-acre lot. “They did fabulous job. By far, outstanding job,” Chung said. “I think it’s a good design.”

ACCELERATED SERVICE

While Chung Brothers Automotive

won’t service commercial trucks, there’s enough space for large busses and every car variety. Services include standard maintenance services like fluid inspections and check engine light diagnostics; engine services; electrical services; exhaust services; tire services; transmission repair and heating and cooling system diagnostics. Tires, windshield wipers and batteries are also available for purchase. The shop is equipped with lifts on all eight bays as well as a tire balancer. While staff has so far remained in the family, Chung hopes to hire more local mechanics as the business grows. “We’re looking to expand to the West End in the future,” he said. The shop began servicing automobiles after opening Jan. 29, including Bryce’s own vehicle. Erin says projects turn out better “when you can make a friendship.”

Services include tires, transmission, engine and electrical maintenance. Hoi Chung is one of three mechanics employed by the family business.

BREAKING NEW GROUND

The shop space has eight bays to service any type of vehicle aside from commercial trucks.
